In Australia we have a rental bond system, but the rental market is so expensive and competitive that even having enough for the upfront costs and a good rental history is not enough to guarantee you will be approved as a tenant.

  • @CB-sx8xh

Once homeless, daily living expenses are higher and it becomes more difficult to build enough savings for the entry costs for a rental

Excellent vid! Nice, clean 70’s - early ‘80s house. My sweet spot would be from $400 - $650 per month, older properties like this with tatamis. Most owners would probably replace old tatamis for new ones. The only thing I’d want is something with unit baths instead of this old style, tile bath. The tile bath is freezing in the winter. Definitely planning my retirement move to somewhere in Kyushu.

It's surprising to me that bathrooms are often off the genkan like this. Why would such a private space be connected to a conceptually "public" area?

Thanks for the video. I grew up in Vancouver, just two hours from Seattle. I am looking at vacation homes in Japan, and airbnb it when I am not there. I am curious as to why the landlords would not consider short term rental since the long term rental value is not that high. A quick search on airbnb shows an average cost of $200/day in Fukuoka. One week of airbnb is the same as one month rental. Merci

Very insightful, thank you. I feel like Japan at least has a cohesive plan and programs in place rather than the fragmented patchwork of here in the US. While every country faces these challenges with the social safety net, some countries put forth far more robust efforts to assist and Japan appears to be relatively high on the scale when it comes to this. I greatly enjoy the style of your videos and am looking forward to more tours in the Fukuoka area. I hadn't considered it as an area to live in Japan until I saw some of your content. Thanks again.

It was pretty interesting when you were talking about the homeless topic. Just goes to show you how similar things are, no matter what part of the world you are in. Is there a possibility that you can go a little more in depth? I'm pretty curious about it, especially now that things here in the US have gotten so much worse. Like, WHY is the Japanese government so adverse to doing more for certain groups? The runaway kids and the single mothers, specifically. Thanks.

Although I always try to stay level-headed, these kinds of prices radicalize me into loving Japan! The fact that it’s not impossible to find places for 200-300 USD (or even lower sometimes) while still looking decent- is truly commendable! It feels bittersweet to know this exists and is, in fact, real! After having lived in cities where you’re lucky to find anything below 800-1,000 USD, with salaries considered "good" if they exceed 10 USD/hour (which they usually don’t-and I’m not joking), the contrast I feel is immense. Like, yes, that’s how much it’s supposed to cost. All the power to Japan in that department! 200-400 USD for a decent place in a city that isn’t car-dependent, feels relaxed, and isn’t overcrowded (Fukuoka has a population of 1.5 million people, if I remember correctly)-does it get better than that? And I’ve seen the same prices for apartments in Japan in stunningly beautiful cities surrounded by nature, mountains, water, and so on. It almost feels like a slap in the face sometimes, tbh Now, of course, there are plenty of problems with these cities too-I’m pretty sure. But oh lord, in most other places, you have the same, if not worse, problems while being stuck with abysmal salaries and having to feel "grateful" for paying 1,000 USDー What a joke! And I’m not even bringing out the big guns, like places that charge 5,000 USD/month for something that’s just "okay. Sorry for the rent (hehe ;) ), we are strong, and we will succeed !!!

That’d be $1600/month+ in NYC, plus fees in a no laundry building. I wouldn’t rent that in NYC for what they pay there but for $195/month in Japan…maybe. Wish my company allowed remote work outside the US. If it did… I’d already be living there.
