Interview with Carol Redford from Astrotourism WA on Lightpollution
I caught up with Carol from Astrotourism WA (Western Australia) to chat about light pollution. I've learnt a lot about light pollution from knowing her over the years and I'm looking forward to doing more to highlight the issues involved with it. It has far reaching effects on many things including flora and fauna.
I actually travel around with a light pollution meter and have previously been recording light pollution at areas that I visit. I need to get back to this. It's changing and the light pollution maps are often out of date.

A quick list of 11 things that have helped my astrophotography over the past 12-14 years of photographing the stars. This is focused on landscape astrophotography. In retrospect when uploading - I could also have added - working for someone else - it's when you have to capture the stars for someone elses requirements, makes you think more. Also timelapsing which has occupied a lot of my astroph...

Astrophotography timelapse including day to night and moon rise. High cloud was forecast, so I took advantage of these conditions together. Timelapse of setting crescent moon and Milky Way rise at Bluff Knoll in the Stirling Ranges in Western Australia. Moon luminosity on night 1 was about 20% and night 2 was about 30%. Moon brightness was needed to light the side of the cliff of Bluff Knoll since it's a fairly dark surface and would only silhouette with f2.8 30s iso 6400 exposures. Used the timelapse view with LR timelapse for the...

I appreciate the time and effort put into the time lapse image but I'm afraid it looks utterly fake, the Milky Way has been photoshopped and slapped on the background. Here's a thought, how about showing what it really looks like when you look up at the wonders of the sky from amazing locations - you know, milky and not like a fireworks display cut from a calendar?
Thank you kindly for sharing this information
Thanks Michael. Appreciate the information. Do you run courses ?
Love your work and the information you bring to us Mr Goh thank you. 😎🤙🏻
Some years ago I remember seeing some of your work and was amazed but I can’t recall where, not to matter, I accidentally found your channel flicking through photography videos and now I can put a face to those incredible images. Subscribed and eager to learn.
Thanks Michael for this - I’ve just bought a tracker and didn’t really understand the science of polar alignment. I’ll compare your method with the using an app. Greetings from Queenstown, NZ
Just discovered your channel after recognising the Pinnacles. Gorgeous images! I’m new to Astro and just bought a MSM Nomad. This video has so many helpful tips - thank you!
Thanks for the video Michael. Food for thought as I start to do Astro
Love your videos…would love to see one on taking panoramas of the night sky.
I think I've done one before but that was many years ago - will add it to the rather large list of things to do :P
Thanks a lot for the excellent video. Keep up the good work!
It was not clear to me on which setting the shutter sound was louder on the R6ii compared to the R6.
actually I think they are both completely when on silent shutter and with a wide open aperture. I think I'd only just noticed since I often shoot 1/3 stop down on the aperture
Hi Michael, how this R6ii compare to Canon 5D Mark IV use for astrophotography in 2024 when budget is limited?
Is there any mobile phone app that can stitch panorama?
Hi Michael, thank you for sharing this video! I learned a few things I was unaware of. I do have a question on the R6 Mk ll that I can't find an answer for, so I was hoping that you could help. For astrophotography I use a Venus Optics Laowa RF 15mm F/2 lens (all manual). I was taking night sky photos a couple days ago, and out of roughly 100 images, I am seeing a bit of rotating blur on about half of them - each one has the same amount of motion, and it was real sporadic which shots were good vs. bad. This happened a few weeks ago with a Rokinon EF 14mm F.2.8 lens (manual lens) so I've concluded this isn't a lens issue. The tripod is rock solid, so I know it isn't that. I am thinking it had something to do with the IBIS. This is what I can't find answers on, even in the Canon manual for this camera. The manual is very limited about enabling IS and nothing about disabling IS. So unlike my other cameras that do not have IBIS, I am a bit unfamiliar with this part of the menu system. When I go to the IS (Image Stabilization) Mode in the menu settings, it opens up a sub menu. IS Mode.... on Digital IS ...on Still Photo IS... Always Focal length... 50mm (Im assuming I don't need to worry about that one) So my question is, do I turn all three of these off for astrophotography? Or just one? Thank you!
I'd just turn all of them off. I know when IBIS was on it did occassionally show up with the problem. Turning off IS mode and digital IS will automatically turn off still photo IS
Great video. I am an astrophotography novice, but was very pleased with my first astro panorama taken with my inexpensive 14mm 2.8 and full frame camera mounted on a travel tripod whilst on holiday. I wasn't expecting it to work, but it stitched without a problem in Lightroom. My first selfie wasn't too bad either. Without Photopils I would have been in the dark 🤪. And at last someone who mentions the importance of monitor calibration! I can see how people get into this genre.
Just found you and appreciated this video. Your work is beautiful. Would love to do a selfie using the light you hold. Thanks.
Another form of light pollution I'm noticing more and more is in super high intensity lights/spotlights on vehicles. I've often had to wait several minutes for a vehicle to approach and pass before being able to capture an image... only for another vehicle to then appear on the horizon. I understand this is considered a safety issue but I do wonder if it's necessary to turn night into day.
Great video Michael, a very important topic. Carol is spot on that we need to reinvent ourselves in how we get people to engage and start travelling and spending money in these smaller towns. It is possible, you only have to look at the success of things like the silo art trail in north western Victoria or the sculpture trail of outback Queensland. Connecting our senses to the landscape and the night sky could be very successful if done right. Ultimately so glad the issue of light pollution seems to be getting some traction now.
I agree with Carol. Losing sight of the stars would be, well I just can't imagjne that. To be in a dark sky area with no light polutiion is something beautiful
Magnificent video mate. Thanks for sharing.👌🏼
Beautiful. Thanks for sharing. Would love to see the Milky Way and Aurora. Michael, do you or can you organise some kind of tour for that?
Amazingly beautiful! Thanks Michael for doing this video showing us the beauty of our southern sky! You're a legend!
Caught me off guard hearing my name! Lake Leschenaultia was hectic busy, particularly trying to leave 😂 worth it though! Such spectacular footage you caught. Absolutely mind blowing and the intro was interesting as well.
Great video, thank you Michael!
Have you tried Planit Pro? I think you would like it for planning.
Yes! Find it so much easier and efficient that PhotoPills. Doesn’t require you to be onsite to plan with AR capabilities
great stuff ..ty
What is the 'very substantial amount of work' in the PP that you need to do? I want to do something similar but I hate PP :E What equipment are you using btw?
currently it's 4 cameras with fish eye lenses setup in an array to cover up and and triangle of 3. It uses a synchronised intervelometer. With battery packs, dew heaters and ... more. The PP is .... the main part - there is a lot that really the serious astrophotog is probably more accustomed to - having to do with denoising and de-vignetting and then stitching the whole thing into a panorama that is then batched. Also there maybe some conversions for changing of light situation. Then it's putting it together as a movie timelapse. There's a lot more to it than that - and the next few innovations are ... substantially more involved. The thing is that you need to also check each stage just in case to identify faults that might not be readily noticeable in first runs. Even with a serious editing computer - this is at least a few days and more likely a few weeks to process each of these.
@@michaelgoh2884 Have you thought of investing in an insta360 PRO2?
So good to be able to relive this in VR (even if just scrolling around). The SAR arc was intense. We missed much of the second burst around 10:30pm due to fog and cloud cover in Harvey but what a night 😍. I also put a video up on my channel (@growphotography) if you are interested.
Thanks Michael. That is dead set the best Astro video I have seen. It is brilliant being able to watch you speak and then pan around like I was standing beside you but checking out the sunset. You’re a genius, well done.
I'm hoping to do an astro VR with the normal VR maybe once a month. There is a very substantial amount of work with the astro VR while it's just the one night - the post processing takes a very long time to "get right". While I can't do an aurora all the time ;) - the VR plans coming up are very substantial. There is a lot of theoretical stuff that I'm thinking if this works ...
Thank you for such a wonderful experience. Like I’m there with you. Great clear view of all the events that night. Isn’t nature so spectacular! I was climbing out of a van onto grass and between gumtrees when the 10pm AWST peak hit. Lovely to see the full impact. Thanks again Michael!
was an absolutely stellar night - was interesting to see the residual effects throughout the night as the situation changed
Absolutely
Impressive video and wonderful Time Lapse. I have really enjoyed watching it. I send you greetings from the Canary Islands-Spain.
thanks muchly - greetings from my own little universe :P
Thanks for sharing these tips and tricks Michael. I was fortunate enough to have won a Skywatcher Star Adventurer 2i from the last time this competition was run. While there is a bit of a learning curve to using trackers, there is little doubt in my mind if you persist they will help raise the quality of your images to the next level.
haha I had mine for about 6 months before working it out
Excellent video from an amazing night Michael
just back in signal range now :P - was a fantastic night
Beautiful ! Who would have thought, nature loves RGB.
haha the night sky is full of colour
A joy to watch 🤩
thanks Grant - looks best in a VR headset ;)
Awesome Michael very nicely done. 🖖
thanks Gavin - takes a long time to edit :P - I think it ended up being 3Tb with all the temp files
Phenomenal mate!!!!
thanks Joel - I know that sort of event doesn't happen all the time - but ... watch this space ;)
Great video, welcome back, here's to seeing more.
thanks - hoping to be more regular. I've already scheduled the next one and shot the one after. I actually have a list of topics that goes on for more than a year based on 1 per week.
Excellent video, Michael! Good to see you back.
thanks muchly - hoping to be more regular
Great video Michael, practical honest advice which we all appreciate.
thought it was important to say it's from my point of view - there are so many people saying THIS is how it must be done - and if I'd listened to all those people, I wouldn't be where I am ;)
Great work there Michael, do really enjoy your images as well as Richard Tatty. I did purchase a used star adventurer and will take it down to the South Island in July. I love your comment, getting a bit cooler ! been bloody freezing over here in NZ windy and wet then clear but cool. Cheers
yeah cold sometimes makes you think - why am I out here :P but as long as we take precautions and don't die of hypothermia
Great Video Michael, I've done a few single or stacked shots before but you have inspired me to have a go at some astro panorama shots.
speaking of which - I've been meaning to do stacked panoramas :P - I've done a little bit, but I have a particular visualisation that will take a long time. I think I've got the gear to automate most of it now.
Worth making the change from the R to R6II? My R is getting up there in shutter count. I use RF 15-35 F2.8 ISO 6400 13 seconds as my typical formula
Don't know if the shutter count really is too much of an issue - I think (not yet checked) some of my 6Ds have done more than 200K currently. The R does have the (dis)advantage of a higher MP count - which provides slightly more detail. I personally think the R6ii is a little less noisy. If you do other photography as well (I'm a full time photog) - the R6ii - is absolutely fantastic, the very fast AF, the video is better, 2 card slots, more ergonomic with the 3 dials (shutter ISO and aperture) and I really like the photo to video switch location making some event photography to be materially easier. As with all tech though - more cameras keep coming out - I'm tempted to buy another R6ii (or an R8 or an R5ii and/or a sony camera body or two) as additional cameras.
Shutter count ratings are not concrete. Just because the shutter count is high, doesn't mean it will die. Ratings are there from the manufacturer to say it will be guaranteed for that point to operate with a certain margin of error. Often after you get past that point, it will continue to work just fine, but may have increased error in the actual performance of the shutter, like the shutter speed itself. This matters if you're shooting sports, but with astrophotography and landscape, who cares about a 250 millisecond deviation in the shutter speed when you're shooting for 10 seconds? (10000 milliseconds) I think the money would be better spent on a star tracker or a new lens you've been wanting. I'm looking to upgrade TO the EOS R, using a 6D astro modded now. I love the 6D though, all the cameras here in question render the milky way detail and color wonderfully. I have the Sony A7 IV for video and daytime use, but I hate how it renders stars and nebulosity.
I will try this 4 astro imaging, with my Seestar S50! If it works, I'll feel like I've won the lottery; thanks to your video! Keep up the great, clear, and precise vids!! Thank you!
Thanks for showing me the easy way to polar align the star tracker💥✨⚡️
Great video! I am in a bortle class 4 region and it's extremely difficult to find Sigma Octanis. I use my camera to point exactly to the same direction as my polar scope and then take pictures until sigma octanis is in the middle. That way i can find it more easily. But still, is barely visible.
What lens(es) do you recommend for astrophotography? RF lenses? EF lenses with adapter?
Salutations - I use the EF to R mount adapter so any "normal" lens will work. The adapter has the filter slot so you can also add light pollution filters that way. I use trackers as well so the focal length isn't so much of an issue. I personally like the fast primes (easier for focusing and generally sharper) - so my preference tends to be like the sigma 35, sigma 85, normally things like the tamron 15-30 but when I'm timelapsing - light lenses are preferable
I don't have a tracker...I would have a concern about the focal length as a result. I am new to the R6 MKii and only have a 16mm. I am thinking of getting a 5d or 6d so i can use a 14mm.@@michaelgoh2884
What lens would you recommend for R6 Mark II if I want both astrophotography and landscape photography? Thank you in advance.

Greetings, This is awesome, your video is helpful. I've been planning on doing astrophotography and investing a startracker, and your explanation on polar aligment ( especially for southern hemesphere ) is the easiest and most simple I've found.👍🏻👍🏻 by the way I have question, after you did a pointing and angle it to south, how do you fine tuning it through the polar scope if we can not see any bright star? Thank you.
