For the first time in 2.5 years… we have running water!🚰😱
Просмотров 1933 месяца назад
Newest upgrade to the yurt life: running water!!! 😱😱😱🤩😭✨🚰 Y’all, I never thought I would be close to tears over seeing water coming out of my tap… but after two and a half years of hauling all of our water by hand from the neighbor’s house, it’s seriously such an amazing luxury. I washed up the breakfast dishes in under 5 minutes - no having to heat water ahead of time, I washed up the sink aft...

Stay tuned for more family homestead content!
Building a Raised Garden Bed -- Hugelkultur Method and Charing Boards
Просмотров 2439 месяцев назад
In this video I built me a garden bed that will be closer to the yurt. Now Jo will hopefully be able to do a little more gardening this summer, even with little kids in tow! I used a slight variation of the hugelkultur method (flat instead of mounded) to create a strong healthy base for the soil, and I charred the surrounding boards of the bed to create rot resistance. Should turn out to be a s...

    I have that machine with 55 hrs on it. Great machine. I installed hydraulic thumb, cement counter weight (cast right on existing counter weight), cushion valve on turn table, latches on rear hatch (I leave rear hatch off all the time so it never over heats. The bolts on turn table NEED to be loctite to prevent damage. Nice video

    Yup much better than a shovel good for lifting up heavy pieces of wood that you wouldn’t be able to lift up and put in a splitter at least for a 68 year old guy with spinal stenosis

    Rotational grazing for pastured poultry is such a smart and sustainable practice! 🐓🌱 Moving the pens weekly not only keeps the birds healthy but also enriches the soil naturally. 🌾✨ It’s a win-win for the animals and the land-great work! 💖👏

    This is the kind of off grid / tiny house living I’ve envisioned for myself but with just a little more modernization as I am a senior citizen and somewhat disabled. But that’s not a problem because whatever I would build would go on my son and his family’s 7 acre hobby farm - which somewhere years down the road the home would be there’s anyhow upon my death. This seems so refreshing to me! I grew up country and mostly off grid anyhow so that part would not be a surprise or shock in any way. I just needed to let you all know how you’ve inspired me to continue that dream♥️

    Hello where did you purchase your dome light in your yurt?

    • @Jo-Leaton
      @Jo-Leaton 3 месяца назад

      Hi there! There actually isn't a light up there, it's just a clear dome with a sheet stretched across a circular frame (Cody built it!). You can buy something similar from yurt manufacturing companies (I know Pacific Yurts sells one). We call it a light defuser, and it makes a HUGE difference in how the light plays in our yurt!

      Wow, what a rude thing to say to a stranger! I hope you wouldn’t speak to someone like that if they invited you into their home in person. Is your house always spotless? I specifically didn’t tidy up before filming because I wanted to show the reality of living off-grid in a tiny house with toddlers. We don’t wash dishes after every meal because that requires boiling water and a 20 minutes process to wash everything without running water. The kids play with toys, and as anyone with kids can tell you, sometimes they want to leave a toy out to come back to later. I don’t have an office or a sewing room, and it’s not always practical to put projects away when I’m planning to come back to it later in the day. We don’t have closets to hide things in. Our entryway doubles as our bathroom for heavens sake. We’ve been working to build shelves and storage solutions for a year and a half now, but that takes money and time - both of which often have to be spent on other things. Please be more thoughtful before you leave a rude comment next time.

    Hello, I enjoyed your video. My question is what company did you use and what is the insulation? do you find your yurt stays warm with in insulation?

    • @Jo-Leaton
      @Jo-Leaton 9 месяцев назад

      Our yurt is from the company Pacific Yurts (based out of Cottage Grove in Oregon), but we bought ours used and set it up ourselves. Here's a link to a blog post I wrote about setting it up: feelslikehomestead.com/2023/04/26/raising-the-yurt/ We've been very happy with it, and Pacific Yurts' costumer service is absolutely fantastic! In regards to the insulation, Pacific Yurt’s insulations is a 5/16” thick, seven layer, reflective insulation. It basically looks like a really fancy bubble wrap covered in aluminum foil. We've found that it stays warm inside as long as the fire is going, but if the fire dies on a cold night, it gets pretty chilly. In all fairness, we do have several large windows that aren't insulated, and our back door is in pretty rough shape and lets quite a bit of air through a couple big gaps.
