This "technique" would burn the exhaust valves, I would think, due to the lack of a complete exhaust system; either manifold or hedders; to aid in the evacuation of heat and exhaust gasses.

Something's are missing. Valve crystalization is your perceived future. Nuts on the head studs aren't necessary either.

But it's a model of a diesel engine, why does it have a spark plug? Most COX model engines are actually diesel two strokes so it is not that difficult.
