I will never accept the 3rd movie. A crappy, generic, disappointing villain. A completely out of nowhere "Oh, we have to make the dragons leave" plot point that still has no valid reason to exist. And Toothless just didn't feel like Toothless as much as the previous movies.

After putting off this video since it was long and now finally listening to it. I agree with just about everything said here, httyd is my favorite movie, and I almost never pick favorites. What they decided to do in this one I am not concidering canon. The 1st movie changed my artstyle fundamentally forever, and the music is awesome as well. I could go on tangents until the cows come home, but this was a good video for me to reitorate and realize many things, thank you. (Trailer is now out for the live action, so there's that...)

i saw it in theaters in 2019 on release and ever since i saw it ive always thought it felt rushed and idk why. maybe its because the light fury got introduced so quickly and toothless immediately took a liking to her which contradicts his personality that we've seen in the past. it would have made more sense to make the light fury a female night fury since for years in the show hiccup and toothless have been looking for more night furys. if they would have found a family of them then hiccup would have a better reason to release toothless even if he didn't want to because its something they have been longing for.

on the pacing of hiccup and astrids romantic pacing- teens are weird like that sometimes, im still one myself and O.M.G. i could see that really happen.

Coming back to this video a year later because I gotta throw in my own rant about the light fury’s design. With what you said about how she wasn’t intended to be a cave dragon, it’s true, but also really sad because her being a full on subterranean dragon could have been so cool. They could have given her more cavelike traits, with longer claws, lack of skin pigment, clouded/pupil-less eyes (or maybe no eyes at all), and larger nostrils/frills to emphasize her reliance on senses besides sight. This could’ve also fixed the issue of her stealing toothless’ catlike mannerisms, since he could have kept those, and she could have had her movement based off moles, bats, and other sound/smell reliant animals. But noooo, they couldn’t have done any of that because she needed to look delicate and pretty. TLDR we could’ve had a cool mole-fury dragon and instead we got the dragon equivalent of a bratz doll. Really disappointing when you think about it.

The whole movie is oddly conservative. It's about an activist giving up his childhood friendship and ideals to go settle down, get married, and have kids because the activism was met with pushback more than twice and was thus too hard to continue doing.

Also, I remember walking out the theatre after watching that movie and feeling kinda "meh, I'm not sure what I saw, but I'm not sure I liked it...", a feeling I kept onmy second watch. Now I get it, I always watch it very far from the other two because it always sour things a lot and I don't want to associate those feelings to the second and the first, now I know why.

1:09:49 I agree with everything and maybe I will make a more extended comment but I need to say this: at some point we as viewers need to stop with the "let's say" like, suspension of disbelief only goes so far, if you put too many "just bear with me" no, I won't bear with you, you either give me a good reason why I should bear with you or I'm going to break the immersion and the movie is going to be sh*t.

So for the alpha thing the red death (not green death) the red death was there queen whereas the one in the 2nd film was considered the king, so the red death was the alpha of that flock of dragons and also the bewilderbeast has a stronger mind control power which is why its able to gain control over so many dragons and also alpha toothless is badass and I love the glowing on him but I guess it’s not for everyone

•For me if I don’t emotionally connect to who and what is on screen I won’t cry at when sad things happen. Also I have to be in the crying because something sad happens mind set. Spoiler Like that scene from Inuyasha where the child who made a big mistake causing the death of her brother is being taken to hell. I cried because I was emotionally connected and in the crying mindset. An out of wack sleep schedule also helps. •I recommend reading the How to Train Your Dragon Books. I have only read the first book. At the time I thought that the first book did not have any sequels. •To be fair. To go from a leader like Hiccups dad to Hiccup being leader is a marathon that cannot be run in one day. I bet Hiccups dad had to work hard to be the leader. Plus Hiccups dad died it takes time to accept that fact and move on. Hiccups dad will always be the leader even in death. Plus Hiccup did not probably do much to prevent his dad’s death. Hiccup probably prioritized a relationship with Toothless more than he prioritized a relationship with his dad.

1:06:22 actually, as a book fan, toothless is actually a Seadragonus Giganticus Maximus, the largest and most powerful dragon types. He's just a very young one. The series claims to be Hiccup's autobiography and Cressida Cowell just a translator. I don't remember much about it, but it's probably one of my favourite kid's book series. Probably my favourite thing about it is that it had no romance involved with the main characters, and Camicazi (the main girl character who Astrid seems to be loosely based off of) is just Hiccup and Fishlegs' friend. And the dragon's speak their own language, dragonese. Hiccup is the only character who bothered to learn it, and it's a big plot point in the book "How to Train Your Dragon: How to Speak Dragonese"

The 2nd and 3rd movie shouldn't have been made. It's sadly the case with many franchises

I agree with everything you said. Movies became just too confusing. I love 2nd one, probably just like the 1st one, but the 2nd one already had a lot of WTF moments, like those powerups. Hence I like the original more. And 3rd one? Well, no need to talk about that. It's a mess with bad and boring story, bad designs and terrible ending!

I couldn't agree with you more. It's like third film completely neglects every single message that previous 2 films set. It's like it ended that way JUST for the sake of ending the franchise! At 53:25, I literally screamed "THANK YOU"! That's exactly what I hate about 3rd movie - it just doesn't make ANY sense. The bond, frienship and "family" ideas are completely missing in the film. - the bond and frienship suddently mean diddly nothing - unnecessary separation at the end that doesn't make sense - suddently remembering the "hidden world" in the beginning. And I'm not talking about how 2nd movie's ending (we have dragons, they will all protect us) was completely turned around in the beginning of 3rd by saying how they're visible, vulnerably and actually need to leave their homes... ...bummer! And overall, 3rd movie is really boring too. There were some enjoyable parts, but it PALES in comparison to first 2 movies. They were awsome! I have more to say to it, but you pretty much summed it up perfectly! Franchise deserved better (especially given that they are live action remaking 1st movie)!

Another point: light fury's tail is heart shaped as well, which just adds to the fact that they made her to be just a female love interest and be all dainty

I never considered how Toothless discovering/gaining new powers, particularly in this movie, made the Light Fury and her abilities kinda redundant. It actually also does that with the Skrill, my favorite dragon species in the HTTYD universe

One thing I noticed is that you haven't watched any of the TV/Netflix shows have you? I say this mainly because you don't know the names of characters and say that side characters don't get any development, which happened in the side shows. For example, the twins were shown to not be just dumb characters, but instead that they act like that because it's fun for them. Ruffnut not only gave Astrid a valid argumentation why she was treating her and the others badly, she was the only one to come up with a decent plan to escape captivity when Astrid, Fishlegs and Tuffnut couldn't(Hiccup and Snotlout were separated from them). Tuffnut also has some feats, like training a Typhoomerang named Torch, and trapping a Changewing when the rest couldn't. These character developments aren't present in HTTYD2 because the film was released before the Netflix series. Meanwhile in HTTYD3 Tuffnut gives REALLY bad advice to Hiccup, which he wouldn't do after everything in RTTE, and Ruffnut is the dumbest character in the whole movie, not checking if she was followed because "She never looks back~", and doing really dumb stuff for no reason, when she was clearly shown to know when to joke around and when to get serious.

the conclusion is: Open world dinosaur games sounds better in concept than in reality. dinosaurs can't do any of the interesting things humans do. the only option i truly think could be viable is humans and dinosaur playables interacting in a harsh environment where PVE mainly consists of complex survival mechanics - where you constantly need to do something to better your survival and its about seeing how long you can stay alive.

I’m firmly of the mindset that this film should’ve opened with Hiccup and Astrid’s wedding. There was no reason to leave that to the very end as if that’s all Hiccup’s arc had been building towards this whole time and I genuinely hate the implication that he needs to let go of Toothless in order to be ready for that as if Toothless has only ever been a symbol of his youth like…where the fuck did that come from? It’s like they took the idea that Hiccup was shrinking away from his responsibilities in the second film and instead turned his relationship with Toothless into some sort of metaphor for immaturity for this one. Opening with their wedding would’ve given the film a reason to open on Berk just like the other two and frankly, having the iconic “This is Berk” voiceover while it’s slowly revealed it’s their wedding day would’ve been amazing in my opinion. It also wouldn’t have been that surprising to the audience at all. If you’re just going by the films, these two have been courting for about six years at this point and marriage was mentioned in passing in the second film, it was going to happen in this franchise at some point, which is why I also don’t understand why it feels like such a new and awkward topic for them when Hiccup would literally be expected to take a wife and father children, especially now that he’s chief, and there’s no way they haven’t been aware of that little detail. They had two films to give this relationship any sort of real development but instead just had it simply be and I think that worked out quite well, it was nice that there wasn’t any real relationship drama in the second film. They just were and they should’ve kept it that way instead of trying to give them an arc this film really did not need. Not to mention, getting their wedding out of the way earlier on would’ve also given some extra time that their relationship as a topic takes up to other plot points that so desperately needed more time and development.

you put just about every thought i had about the 3rd movie into words PERFECTLY. so many things have bugged me about it for so long, and now i know why, because there were so many little nitpicks that actually came together into thoughts of a video like this. it was just never a satisfying ending to me, and to have two movies full of "we HAVE to work together" only to turn around and say "so they're banished for all eternity until humans can be good" is SOOOOO endlessly frustrating. thank you for this wonderful video :]c

Good vid, nice art (such content, wow! xD) Covered pretty much everything there, but I gotta say, as a Hypsi player who wants to actually play the game, not just troll without having to AFK grow, I actually wish I had the chance to experience the growth stages, rather than hitting full maturity before I've even smelt anything I can eat or drink.. Like everyone else is saying, yeah, it'd be nice if there was more going on than just semi-afk grazing, and existing, but lets be honest, eating, reproducing, and being eaten are pretty much the highlight of most creatures lives, so short of adding something dumb like collecting sticks, there's only a few accurate mechanics to add that could add much, like symbiotic relationships/grooming, to add more pack/heard mechanics. MAYBE it'd reduce the KoS for fun mentality, just as likely it'd kill off a lot more peoples interest because now there's even more annoying things you've gotta do to progress/exist. Nearly all games force the players to play as the devs intended, it's just that the better ones do so in clever/insidious ways that make you think you're doing it for fun, or just doing your own thing. Side note: in my experience (which is a bit out of date at this point, tbf), the best game design course is anecdotal - just watching TED talks and GDC, and listening to the lessons of people who've been through the shit to varying degrees of success for decades - otherwise you're most likely just going to pay for a course in project management with a programming theme, because the curriculum is dictated by old people with no clue what the industry actually entails.

I really hated the light furry because she was an honest gold digger. Like she put toothless in a love charm and took him away from his homies. Like WHAT

I felt like Hidden world and ending it with Hidden world felt rushed, It’s obvious that Dragos alliance was vastly larger than Berk no mention the Allienace had canon, they should’ve crushed Berk easily There should’ve been a sequel trilogy where Berk is in a war against with Aillaince with Berk being Helped by Outcats, wing Maiden, Wing defender, and beserks Tribe. I think they could’ve made at least another good trilogy

I've loved HTTYD since it first came out, but a part of me cringed whenever people would refer to it as a perfect franchise but I couldn't put my finger on why, but you basically took this feeling and put words to it. I also agree with the Kung Fu Panda suggestion (although I haven't seen 4), and I'd argue that even Shrek is better as a franchise because of how weirdly easily you can write out 3. I will always love HTTYD but man, its ending sure is awful.

Just crazy how most of the fanbase seems to get all soft when it comes to this movie, as if it’s not a disgrace to it’s predecessors.

‼️ long ramble warning ‼️ what i hate is how *unthreatening* grimmel was. it was a bad case of ignoring the ‘show don’t tell’ rule; sure, several characters (including hiccup himself) frame him as an omnipotent, incredibly skilled and frankly unmatched force of unbridled evil, but when this scrawny long-faced old man appears and is shown to only have maybe six dragons whole in his possession, each only obeying him through forced drug use, it was very underwhelming. even as a… **checks notes** TEN YEAR OLD, watching this in cinema, i didn’t retain a single memory of grimmel. in fact, when my httyd phase kicked back up in summer ‘23, i had to rewatch the third film because i realised i had not a single clue what the plot was and i can confirm, this film just barely clings to its good ratings from surface-level visuals, soundtrack, and voice acting, which thinly cover the underbaked plot and canon-ruining events beneath. john powell was probably the only wholly-good factor as the voice actors were forced to read out stilted conversations and wildly OOC lines (from astrid’s ‘you gave him his freedom, hiccup’, to tuffnut’s ‘lose the limp. no one’s gonna marry that’), and the visuals were already pretty iffy - blurry, smudged, oversaturated in a lot of areas and lacking a diverse and effective colour palette in most frames. back to grimmel; he had a LOT of potential as a villain. i feel he could’ve worked a lot better if dean deblois had full freedom over the third film and incorporated his character into the second film as this sinister and unruly war general beneath drago and above eret who’s ideas are skilled and strategic over brutal mental destruction, the pathway drago preferred to take. he could’ve taken only a couple minutes of screen time, enough to be classified as interesting foreshadowing. i am fully aware that dean’s intention with the third film was to bring back drago and expand his character and lore, which is why he seems so 2-dimensional in the film, but things got in the way and dean was forced to ruin his life’s work with this piece of shit movie, and if he wanted to add grimmel from the start then this is what probably could be more effective. grimmel then could’ve had more of a role in things instead of being brushed aside for the clumsy and embarrassing romance plot with toothless and toothpaste- lean into the idea of him being a villainised hiccup, owning and befriending a female night fury but instead of it being out of love and genuine friendship, it’s out of savagery and greed and a sense of wild revenge. contrast him against drago - where drago is a sickened madman very willing to take the most aggressive and violent option under the flat thought process of it ‘working best’, grimmel would be collected, cool-faced, but ultimately extremely more mentally-unrestrained and chaotic. as someone writing a fanfic of a second AND third movie rewrite, i plan on having grimmel literally wearing a skinned night fury cloak, the type with the upper jaw as a hood and the arms as sleeves, and a second cape from night fury wings. i feel this could work, as hiccup is shown as an honest and grounded leader, someone humble and caring and smart. grimmel being so detached from human emotion would be even more effective in this regard. this is a mess of a comment lmfao. i’ll probably edit it at some point to streamline it and clean it up a bit, but for now enjoy this THICK section of text following a thready train of autistic thought lol (ﾒ﹏ﾒ)

I never did a thorough thinkthrough of the third movie, but there were a few things that I didn't really understand, despite the move to another island for no reason. Why was Hiccup all of a sudden so afraid of marrying Astrid? He was obsessed with her in the first movie, why such a mind change? Why the story with Snoutloud going after Valka and even more, she some sort of giving in in the end? Gobber is gay, ok fine. But why did he all of a sudden have to behave so super stereotypically gay even though he hadn't done that in the first two movies? I guess I now know the reasons why I was never drawn so much towards rewatching the third movie... I read the books and with your explanation it really doesn't make sense to put the ending of the books into the movies. In the books there is an epic fight between the dragons and the humans. There are villains, but they are not on the dragons' side. It's more like the villains fighting the dragons and Hiccup trying to end the war. So the dragons become invisible (maybe they used this feature from the books when they gave Toothless this ability) to end the war. There was a white powerful female dragon in the books (Luna), so probably that was the background for the lightfury. Also Luna and Toothless being the same species (book-Toothless is only thought to be a garden dragon, but isn't for real), but at such different stages in their lives that a love story was just not ever going to happen. If I remember correctly, Luna keeps being the dragons' leader. In the books Hiccup has another dragon, Windwalker, a black dragon. The movie-Toothless is a bit more like Windwalker and the book-Toothless is not only literally toothless but also super naughty. There is no Astrid in the books, instead a girl named Kamikazi, who is from a different tribe and island, super independent, very good at stealing stuff and really tough. There are some hints that Hiccup has a crush on her, but it never gets to the point. Hiccup is only about 15 years old when the story ends. Also Stoik doesn't die in the books, Snoutloud does.

I've still never seen the 3rd film bc back in the day the light fury's design...idk call me good at pattern recognition bc somehow I just Knew this would happen, but holy shit the bullying hiccup montage made me feel icky. It's like the universe of the film itself is just so...mean, but not self aware about it. Like the writers, alongside their weird determination to make everything about toxic het romance, have a fundamental attitude problem that seeps into the script they created. WHAT is going on with this movie, I am SO GLAD I never saw it, what a disgrace to the franchise. I feel bad for the people who worked on it :(

Super ironic that the Light Fury, a character which the director even states is supposed to represent a "call of the wild" for Toothless, actually has the least wild and least dragonlike design of all dragons. Instead it's like they tried to convert a stereotypical pretty girl into a dragon. If I could hypothetically change the movie, I'd do this: just make a regular female Night Fury. A super wild, super untamed one who's proud and strong. Make it be that she's on the run from Grimmel, who's tracking her down in his quest to end all Night Furies. Grimmel follows her to Berk, and that's how Hiccup and gang meet him. Also, I refuse to believe that one man brought down the entire species and like no one seems to know about it? So make it like it's an ongoing quest of his. He's not achieved it yet. Maybe use it to explain why at least near Berk and surrounding areas, there were no other Night Furies. Anyway, it'd be more fun if Toothless is at first a bit intimidated by this wild Night Fury. He's basically domesticated by this point, and the only other member of his species he met is completely his opposite. Make it so that he gradually comes to respect her strength, while she gradually comes to respect how he's integrated an entire flock of dragons with humans. Mutual understanding. Then have them go to the Hidden World, where you find more Night Furies. I mean, the Hidden World is essentially a hidden sanctuary. Why wouldn't there be more rare dragons there? Makes sense for at least one colony of Night Furies to exist there. Idk how to write the rest, but maybe make it so that the female Night Fury is actually a native of the Hidden World, and Grimmel is trying to use her to track down her nest in hopes of finding more Night Furies. It'd be absolutely hilarious for Grimmel to reach the Hidden World only to see that there's just a ton of alive and healthy Night Furies that he never knew about and he gets mad and vows to kill them all. Idk that could be a natural evolution to his character I guess.
