Paranoia in Valve Games
Valve's games often invoke a paranoid reaction in me, and in this video I set out to find why.
Happy 20th anniversary Half-Life 2!

this guy needs more subs hes so underrated
cool
Do you ever feel like you’re being watched?
Left 4 dead was never a scary game to me until I played Last Man On Earth's mutation. It genuinely becomes a horror game without the bots with the sounds of Chargers screaming in the distance
Gamre
awesome vid
yo you're super underrated i hope you get the attention you deserve, this was a great watch as someone who grew up on these games and i agree with pretty much everything, keep it up :)
May the algorithm bless this man 🙏
The source of the paranoia for me has always been the "liminal space" nature of your environment. During an extended section in Portal 2 there isn't so much of a feeling of being watched, along with the quiet sections of Half Life. For me, the Paranoia comes from the feeling that I'm in a place where I am not supposed to be.
Keep up the good work man this was amazing
you like being watched, don't you?
Wonderful Video, I love to see more like that!
Lore of Paranoia in Valve Games momentum 100
Garry's Mod ain't a Valve game tho, other than that the video's neat!
Gary's mod was built by the one of the Valve developers
Portal's Rattmann dens left such a profund impact me as a child I wrote about it for a school assignment. No other game has given the feeling of dread Portal did all those years ago.
in these valves games youre being watched by -half life 1 & 2 : the gman -half life alyx : russell -portal 1 & 2 : glados, ratman and wheatley -team fortress 2 : the administrator -left 4 dead 1 & 2 : the special infected
i think youre just slightly schizo bro im not gonna lie
This video is so fire, it is a sin you have only 550 subs
L4D has the AI director watching you. Even when you think you're alone and locked inside the safe rooms.
Metro games too, you're always being watched xD
Especially for your third video, you smashed this! Congrats and looking forward to what’s next!
You tapped into the music with ghost of rattmann, but i feel a bit part of the "paranoid" feeling is for sure the music. Paired with the slow, dark and lonely moments, the music really gets you to think; and thinking, a lot of the time, is plain uncomfortable. One scene in half life 2 that does this really well is the bridge scene. The bridge is just so lonely and isolated, and there's a sort of despair; yet you know that the combine is monitoring you, after all, they send many soldiers and even a gunship after you onto the bridge. It's just so well done.
19k views and 500 subs, let me fix that 👨🏻🔧
Great video, glad RUclips suggested this to me. Keep up the great work!
Love this video
Ravenholm is by far my least favorite chapter so far lol
This was so great to watch! Seriously thank you for this great documentary of paranoia it really shifts ones perspective. See ya around!
Keep doing this, this is truly amazing to watch
Thank you so much!
you feel like your being watch because you always are in valve games tf2 the administrator half life gman portal glados for an example

Loved the Video and also subscribed. Great Video and a very interesting theme. I cant wait for what you work on in the future.
I am literally being watched yet I don't feel any sort of feeling in association with it
Yeah, gread video!
Is it paranoia if it’s true
12:30 Sounds a bit like Korn
Nice
gmod isn’t really by valve
It was built by the one of the Valve developers
great video, thanks for posting.
Thanks for watching!
And in L4D we are being watched by "The Director".
im cryin 😭😭
I never could play L4D, could anyone explain this to me?
In game ai that dynamically reacts to how well your playing @@madsting6486
@@madsting6486 the director is an ai that spawns infected and items depending on how you're playing and your current situation. I think it can change the map too
thank you
Thank you!
Why does it feel that way? Because the internet said so and now we internalized it. It's nothing more than a trend, people didn't used to think that way about valve maps before. Same with mario 64. It wasn't percieved as a disturbing game at all at the time but now it is because of the "every copy is personailsed" meme Valve is indeed a master of creating a very eerie, empty and melancholy atmosphere. But the precise feeling of being watched (and I'm not talking about being spied on by gman, ratman or glados) has never been present before at least 2022 where thoses sort of video began to appear with the gm-construct haunted and all that
Nah dude, its definitely a thing. Walk around a tf2 map by yourself.
@@mr.shplorb662 I did just that. Like a TON when I was a kid lol. But yeah, never had the feeling though. I still believe people only feel like that because a youtube video told them to.
never thought of this feeling... but your right, so right lol
In TF2 you will definitely get paranoia from a French with a filipino knife
It’s the engine and games, nostalgia and what not all combined in that amalgam of “source engine paranoia”. All 3 of them engines have these iconic looks and feel and we got so used to and Valve games feel alive and cozy due to how meticulously detailed their game design is. Then you stop that “live world” feeling and it becomes incredibly liminal. You feel like this place should be brim with life (which Valve manages to add even to dead empty enrichment center), but it’s all fake, everything is off. Other games rarely can provide the same feel because most games are built on same engines while being vastly different experiences. We don’t unconsciously associate Unreal engine with that cozy “lived in” feeling.
It is the ambient sounds which consisting mix of vibrations that can make ppl feel "erry" and un-easy. The chosen colour tones is wise and have a brush of loniless in every scene. Psycho warfare techniques have been applied into an AAA game which is pretty rare IMHO. Nice video btw. 😉
A lot of this stems from a concept called "Liminal". The term means "The time or space in between". I'll give an example of what this is. One time, my family and I went to an amusement park called "Indiana Beach". When it came time for the park to close, we were at the opposite end of the park. The exit we needed was at the other end. There was no one behind us. As we began to make out way out, we could see the rides and shops closing down before us, even the employees were leaving in front of us. As we got close to our exit, the park was very spooky. It was one of the creepiest feelings I had ever felt; no one behind us, yet it felt like we were being watched. Partly because we were, by the parks security cameras. But it had also become a liminal space; it was between closing for the day, and opening the next day. Source Engine does liminal space very well.
Loved this video!!
Great video holy cow!
Certainly not the first time I’ve heard people say they felt they were being watched/paranoia in GMod, but I never felt that way… probably a good thing because I don’t even want to know how many hours I have in it (numbers got reset many years ago)
