Barbel fishing the river ribble, and I fell in the river twice #barbel #riverfishing #hinders #dogs
We go barbel and chub fishing on Lancashire's beautiful river ribble.
It's a misty, moody October morning, and the river has had 2 extra metres of water flowing through it and subsiding, which is perfect conditions for barbel and chub to respond to feed in the daytime.
I take just one rod and some meat, and some hinders elipse pellets, and some hinders hemp and hemp and halibut ground bait.
My tactics are simple , frequent dating and drennan grip mesh feeders, which will slowly release the meat and pellets, creating a steady scent and feed column.
We catch lots of quality barbel and chub, but unfortunately, I fall I to the river not once but twice.
Mitsy had a good time. I got wet, but mana...

After our first trip, I tried hard to stick to one bait combination of casters and worm and swim stim pellet. And believe me, this combination is mustard. But, there were distinct differences in feeding patterns . This film wi...

Fished the next peg up the other week, also on a slope going down to it. Moved pegs as nearly ended in the river myself, with the bank giving way. Definitely gonna put a rope in my kit from now on 👍
It's safest . A rope in our bags takes no weight.
How long do you leave your dead bait out before you recast
It's a bit dependent on the venue and how active the pike are. Typically, if I don't get a take ile, move deads, maybe every half hour.. if ime on canal I may search out fish . Not uncommon, I will leave a bait for an hour on lakes and resevoir hope that helps.
@@garywilliamsandmitsy Many Thanks
Morning Gary, On a canal I use a float running rig for Pike, I use a ledger when it is windy or there is tow on the water. can you give any advice
@theflossingfisherman7925 don't overcomplicate your rigs. Unfortunately, braids will float and catch the wind. Either get the surface braid well out of the water if using a running rig. Small floats I use inlne weights nothing massive for the canal, maybe 2 ounce max. If drop backs on ledger get tips under the water, heavier leads with a run rig. My canal rods are only 7 feet, and I always set dead baits up downwind and braid to float kept well off the water. I spent many years fishing livebaits with mono. Unfortunately, it's frowned upon in this day and age of snowflakes. I never got snapped or lost rigs, but the so-called Pike experts would give me a lot of shit these days, but it was the very best, and we could easily take 200 double fish in a season on one length of canal
sausages, i fish the same waters as you
Thanks for watching. Yes, we are very lucky. Lots of quality waters
Hell fire Gary that was scary shit. I’m glad you managed to get out. The hypothermia is a real killer. Look what happened in St Michael’s on Wyre. I’ve had nightmares when I’ve been on an Albert’s stretch at ribchester and gone in. The thing is you can see the cracks in the bank sides where it’s previously given way. They should put up signs to warn anglers of the dangers. Anyway a great video dood, keep up the good work but please be careful. Tight lines.👍👍👍👍🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
You're very right. It's very dangerous. I am gonna get a lot of new equipment just to stay safe
Go steady Gary mate
Hi mate . Hope you are well. Hope you are catching some pike. Had a trip with Mark to the local canal Saturday having a go for the pike, but they weren't active, unfortunately, but it was nice, just alot less stressful. It was really just nice having time to relax
@ that’s why I do it mate. A fish is a bonus. Being able sit and watch the world around u is priceless
Well done mate, the barbel was mint and the chub was an absolute crackerjack of a fish. As you say, it's a must to carry extra clothing in the car. I only started doing it myself a couple of years ago when my pal went in the drink...fortunately he had extra warm clothing in his car. As for fishing on top of an undercut, we dont even know we are doing it, but we are. Hope you didnt lose too much gear...be a damn shame to lose one of those Guru rods, as you havent had them for long. Hope you had a bloody big whisky when you got home and warm. Stay safe buddy.👍
I just lost my .eat punch,s and discorger. I won't be taking any chances in the future
@@garywilliamsandmitsy , for me the chub was fish of the day, but a 10lb barbel is always more than welcome.
@mikewilliams68 hopefully be back. Mark did a nice film on that peg catching chub.
Glad to see you’re ok Gary, proper shock to the system that. At the very least you’re taking positive steps for future trips 🎣. Great content this was pal and keep safe 🤞🏻
Thanks. Yes, I won't be back on until I have a new neoprene suit. Got a whistle thanks to marks, sister
Thank goodness your safe so close then mate .... l fish the ribble all the time , lm mid 70s family nag to get a safety jacket Its a trip to the shops for one now
I think we all rake safety for granted. I won't be going back till I'm sure I have everything I need to stay safe
Possibly the best you tube I've seen in a long time! drama with those stonking barbel, sound fishing tips and a very serious lesson learned. I've had a few duckings over the years in the Ribble but usually stepping off ledges when wading, and in summer when the waters warmer. For me now its a rope tied around a tree trunk, down to the waters edge, and neoprene chest waders, which keep out the most bitter winter winds too. Studded sole waders too! hope you're feeling better 👍👍👍
Thanks mate. Had a few bad nights sleep. Or random flashbacks.
Stay safe Gary, Please
Will do. We got some whistles now
Do you fish the Southport Angling run side or the public side.
I've fished both sides over the years
@@garywilliamsandmitsy I am a member of Southport Angling but never fished the Ribble. Always wanted to have a go.
@theflossingfisherman7925 yer fish it. Think there are a few films I've made on the southport lengths. They are full of good quality fish
Some great fishing there but the falls looked pretty scary and you were definitely shook up! It’s easy to forget how dangerous the banking can be and especially on your own! Great filming but has made me reconsider what I should wear and do if out and about on the bank 👍 Take care, Gary🎣🙏
Your very right. I am getting a life jacket rope and whistle. I feel I've taken far to many risks
It was a shock to see you worried and shocked like that pal, and I’m really glad you are alright now. Maybe itxx as a good idea to buddy up on the pegs especially after a flood so there is always help when needed but stay well away from the waters edge until your landing the fish. But give the waters edge a good poking with a bank stick to try any undercut or loose bankings. Take care pal.
Yes we are making a few changes. Taking safety for granted is very easily done
Well done Gary, great sesh! unusual approach - its worth trying something different now and again! what happened to Mr Crabtree style stealth??😂I'm just hoping for some dry rain for the weekend......👍👍
Very old film that. Had to try something different
Gaz,was talking to a lady who fishes the Trent and a lot of the use crampons that fits to your boots
The crampons are a very, very good idea. That would definitely stop me slipping
Huge lesson learned. I’m gutted that I didn’t hear you from my peg. Good advice at the end of the video. Relieved that you are ok. Great fishing apart from that! 🎣
Learnt lots mark. If anything alot more wise.
Ooof close call there lad, glad to see you survived! Love your videos btw - real fishing. Great stuff.
Thanks so much. Glad you enjoy the films .
Bloody hell Gary stay safe 😂 enjoyed the blog im heading out on the severn tomorrow you've just reminded me to put some rope in my rucksack 👍🏻
I've fished a few dodgy swims on the severn. Just be careful. Don't take it for granted. Ime as strong an ox, yet I couldn't get a grip on the bank.
Bloody hell Gary take that as a warning dude dog spike and rope on any dodgy looking pegs also a big sturdy bank stick to grab drag yourself out with you've been lucky there
Hi Carl hope your well. Marks give me a good telling off. Gona get it sorted
Yes gary hope your well mate. Can be deadly them banks on ribble very slippy when the tides gone out
Yer it had been up for a few days. Scared me shitless
Is this the free stretch?
No it's wigan stretch
@@garywilliamsandmitsy was fishing on the ribble yesterday (only catching roach/dace/chub on the feeder but almost came a cropper a couple of times just like you did…. I was with someone though so would’ve been better for me if I had actually slipped into the water…
@nigelbennett316 it's dangerous. Ime getting on a bit. Been in a few times and swam out but there was no option to swim out this time. Very dodgy
Hi these reels have come down in price, would this be good on a 10ft scope 2.25lb for floater fishing thanks Steve
Gods honest truth, I don't think they come down much in price. I personally prefer the shimano x aero 4000 for anything speci related. They just work perfectly. Spools are generous. And you get two metal cnc turned spools for roughly 150 quid. And there are miles more versatile. That's just my opinion
As a married couple we used to go there regularly a couple of years ago untill we arrived to fish one Sunday. There was a bloke with a couple of teen lads set up with a bivvy who promtly started to tell us that we could only fish from the opposite side of the water to where they were fishing, which is a wooded area, as they were on that side of the water first. Being full of athritis accessing the wooded side is very difficult, so basically we were bullied off site, we conplained to the lease holder about the abuse were brushed off by them and haven't been back since.
That is terrible I would definitely go back. You should never be bullied ever
Yes gary it was good to meet you that day mate
Top man. Hooe you have been catching lots of fish 🐟
Perfect place and cracking fish 👍👏👏
Hopefully, we will be out searching for a chub next week. Big baits.on an easy access area. We have a very good rig to show that actually catch,s alot if big fish. Ile show how to set it up and use it
@@garywilliamsandmitsyNice one, Gary👍
Always enjoy your films Gary. Weather is really changing now, and time to get the warmer clothing out. Cracking chub at the end there from Whalley.
Thank you. I am thinking of fishing there more this winter with big baits. I really enjoy fishing there.
Just to help you along a bit with your presentation, that will be "Ribble's", Calder, Hyndburn and Whalley.
Thanks for the advice. Did you enjoy the film ?
Proper fishing , nice one Gary .
Thank you so much. 😎
Lovely location, Gary👍 What do you think of the Prince Albert ticket?
I gave up my Prince albert ticket last year. It wasn't my cup of tea, more cheifs than Indians. This stretch on the calder is alot better than the albert stretch in my opinion
Great vid as always Gary.
Thank you so much 😊
Some good sessions there,Gary and like your advice about baits and places and they don’t always work. Bread might be an all rounder though , bread punch can throw up some surprises! Favourite bit for me is the grand Chub at Whalley. One of my favourite films also was the seven or eight Chub you caught on the river that is now a club water. Thanks for sharing and take care👍🎣👏
Thanks David. It was six at Houghton bottoms. It's a shame that club took it. Like I said it's a world of what haves. People have to posses everything 🙄

Morning Gary Enjoyed your videos of this gem of a water, we’ve had some unbelievable sessions on there this summer, have you heard what’s happening with the fishing now that it’s gone back to the estate, the silence is deafening, do you know if we can fish the lake
No, I haven't heard. It could get a bit chaotic in winter. There Alot of pike anglers and feeder boys fighting for pegs. To be honest, I have spoken to a few locals who never paid and just had a few hours fishing in the evening . I'm just gonna keep fishing till I'm told I can't. Otherwise, windermere is only 20 mins away Grasmere Coniston. All have fish in them
Great video Gary 👌 Going again this Saturday myself, hopefully see the Osprey again
Brilliant mat3. Enjoy the day. Weather forcast looks good. Choppy wind and overcast. Smash it up mate. Big hooks double worm . Me n mark our going hunting for sturgeon. Mark had a 34 lb fish Monday. Lol we are fishing for them on picker rods 😄😄😄
Belting video Gary love it
Thank you so very much 😊😊😊
Another excellent video Gary, very informative and interesting, keep up the good work and your channel will continue to grow mate
You're so very kind. I'm glad you enjoyed the film. I enjoyed making it a lot. 😊
Wow! What a place to fish...it's enormous. How long is the drive for you to get there? I agree with David regards the underwater footage...helps to have that clear water too. Loved the video and Mitsy learning well. The rods have a nice action and look to be perfect for the job. Keep up the filming, Bream King❤
Thanks, Mike. It is 1 n half hours from my house. The rods are surprisingly perfect. I thought they may have been a little overgunned, but there have a nice forgiving action. Mitsy has been doing well, although once we sit down, she goes into protective mode.
1.75lb be good for barbel as well👍
@mikewilliams68 ime positive they will be. I have covid at the moment. I hope it clears by Saturday as I fancy fishing big baits with the new rods on the new swim
