I know, this is a year old. Went Dwarf Pal -2 /Sword Bard 10 so far, campaign going to lvl 20. You forgot to mention that Sword Bard gets extra attack at 5th level. Makes a BIG difference. If anyone reads this, my question is....With this setup, I am thinking Far Step and Spirit Guardians. Spirit Guardians will give me a control spell (slows) and extra damage. Far Step takes care of mobility issues. This build has very different needs than a usual Bard. His Mele is his real strength. For my next magical secrets, it's Greater Steed and Tensors Transformation. The plan is 18 lvls of Bard for any 2 - 9th lvl spells. Any comments/suggestions?

Id like to offer oath of devotion with it's channel divinity, sacred weapon. Being able to add your charisma to hit will really help nullify the -5 sharpshooter ability while giving your weapon a really nice glowing effect. Getting Sanctuary from this oath also a nice way to protect an ally in a tight pinch. I also think you should consider divine favor for extra radiant damage or bless(if you dont already have a cleric) for extra accuracy. By the time you get extra attack you can switch wither for magic weapon for a small boost in accuracy and damage. Sure most of those are concentration spells but if you're in the backline you'll probably be getting hit less anwyays.

The theory looks interesting, but I've played around with the concept enough to drop it, the cost of optimizing for return to 1 HP doesn't pay really well if you can't come back with enough HP to endure the rest of the combat. Of course at the levels showed probably the party's Cleric would have Heal spell on hold, but still... 15th level Long Death Monk could potentially pull this trick 15 times per short rest, could be a Half-orc with three Life well Tattoos attuned for some really annoying cockroach vibe... But a 15th level Wizard could do even better, send a Simulacrum to the fight, supervising thing with arcane eye, enter in combat later and have a clone as a backup plan

Spirits Bard from Ravenloft book feels greatly thematic, and also grants bonus healing and damage. and many of the "tales" effects can grant you even further defense or offense. while cutting words can reduce their attack-rolls or damage with your reactions, but your sorcerer spells could already be absorb elements and shield, so I went with something different. (I also took this and used the orc from monsters-multiverse, which also gets relentless endurance)

I would suggest a few alternatives if one wishes to have better tanking or combat control. But you said it well in the time it took As an abjuration wizard you get a magic ward plus temp hp from spells and bind with rage you are seemingless the endless because if your rage ever goes down you can cast a spell and then go back into action and get all of that back I personally was planning on making a nerd rage out of a half elf and taking artificer as an artillerist. Having the same spells and to do same as wizard if not as much with the whole recovery. But thorn whip to close distance and then close combat. Turrets are bonus action economy and are great for tanking or dealing with cleave aoe for smaller targets. They sit on you. And eventually at high levels you could spell cast through an item instead of your casting as long as its not concentration. Due to enchating an item and using the use item action instead of attacking for an easy cure wounds or such

Yes, become a Zealot Barbarian Hill Dwarf. Hill dwarf gives you bonus HP. Get the Dwarven resilience feat. "Alright, who ordered the extra large anti-magic field with a side of cheese fries?" Jokes aside, as DM I wouldn't really mind this since it takes prepwork and resources from the player, and it isn't a 100% guarantee death immunity considering they can still keep getting knocked unconscious (which breaks concentration anyways), which reduces their mobility and contributions in fights. No team = getting focused till overkill/failed DST happen, after all. I will say that 5e's RAW "bounce-back" way of handling dropping to 0 and getting healed makes this a bit gamey. It's nothing terrible that I can't play around to make the player feel rewarded for investing all that time and effort, but also not entirely remove the challenge or stakes for them, though.

Ability scores are 14, 10, 14, 8, 12, 14. Use an ability score increase to bump Cha again (or twice by 10th level - I took the mobile feat instead). By tenth level the ability scores are 15, 11, 14, 8, 12, 18 (or 20). Use the 15 strength to get splint armor. Negative Int means you need to be careful how you plan your spells. Anything damage dealing with a hit or dc needs to be a warlock spell, any utility or mobility can be from the fighter spells. Obviously, you can swap the Int score for Dex or Wis if you prefer but I'm trying to make a tough and intimidating gunslinger.

But to get the third Extra Attack, level 11 fighter is paramount. So, for the others(3 in every other one) I would go Beast Barbarian for the Tail that instantly whips people who make a successful hit. Then, maybe Astral self monk, which makes basically a 10ft sphere around you of damage that the astral arms do. Then, Idk, maybe soul knife or phantom rogue for...flavor.

Surprisingly, the 30' telepathy has been more useful than I had expected (ie interrogating a doppelganger that doesn't speak my language, coordinating party actions in a silence field, communicating to one NPC while interacting with another NPC we don't trust, etc.) Yes the blasting and armor are glorious. I use a shield so once I get warcaster and war magic I'll be able to action surge x4 blasts, throw a javelin and use a shield for extra AC. Shield/Absorb elements from EK give good reaction defenses, and eventually I'll pick up Mirror Image and Misty Step. Great offense, defense, and movement.
