3 Things NOT to do as a WORSHIP DRUMMER
There's 3 things that you can do as a worship drummer that drive worship leaders crazy.
Who am I???
My name is Kirk Wynn and I've played drums (mainly worship/christian music) for over 25 years. That's cool and all but there's something else that gives me an added advantage when it comes to understanding the nuances of playing worship music. Aside from being a music producer & songwriter, I've spend the last 15+ years at the front of the stage leading worship. I've hired/fired, scheduled/unscheduled many drummers and I can tell you first hand what a worship leader is looking for in a drummer. And it's NOT amazing chops! It's more psychological than anything (as odd as that sounds). I, as a...

Well… Praise Jesus and all, but if I have all that responsibility on me, know everything front and back, direct everything, I’m putting in a lot of work. I’d need to get compensation for all that PT.
@@markunderwood7839 I, personally, am not opposed to paying high level players. But a lot of churches don’t do that or have it in their budget so I don’t think those churches should just be out of luck and have to settle for average. And some musicians actually LIKE a lot responsibility on their shoulders and will gladly take on the role at a volunteer level. If it’s too much stress then yeah, I’d stay away from it or hold out for a paying position. But to some people it’s fun and they consider an honor. Everybody’s different.
I wouldn't say you got carried away. You did say bring the energy, we are worship leaders up there and to me that looks like you were really into the song, really into the worship aspect of it, and best of all, having fun! I also agree with you that technicals aren't everything. They are important but an important thing to remember is something my Grandma told me long ago she said "If you mess up, so what. Not everyone out there is a musician and they probably won't even notice" She even went on to say "If you make a mistake, I just make the same mistake again in the same spot to make it look like I meant to do it." She is definitely right. Matter of fact a good majority of the time when I come down from the platform so many people tell me what they love most about how I play and make me feel really good and I can't help but say think you but also think to myself "Did you not hear all of my mistakes?" Lol. I love playing the drums, I love being a part of the praise team. It is one of the things I look forward to all week with my favorite thing just being in church, surrounded by my church family and the holy spirit!
@@vulcan8807 Amen! Agree with all of that!
Sound like that guy was a metal drummer
@@Millsap_dme Not far off! He was an older guy whose background was in southern/classic rock.
bruh thats hilarious
hahahahaha
Well said brother. Love your content. God blessed.
Appreciate that! 🙏🏼
haha nice
Nice Keep Up the Good Work ❤
@@RadleyRoe Appreciate it!
thats true. but we also need to learn materiel yk. especially for drummers since we are the ones carrying the groove of the band. but yes, we can learn a lot from the band, singers, and MD. so thats true
Agreed. I just see way too many drummers and musicians handicapping their own growth and ability by relying fully on a chart or a tutorial and never progressing to the next stage of their development which is 1) Learning to play live w/o music/charts 2) Learning to HEAR the parts. I understand tutorials are helpful but the goal needs to be to get to the point to where you can just listen and know what’s being played. It’s 100% okay to be in the tutorial/chart stage…but I want to encourage folks to not stay there too long or they’ll end up ONLY ever being able to play that way.
couldnt agree more brother! ur smart wit it!
❤
you did more than nailed it! rhythm is great, you completely blocked out the world and gave God the praise I got to watch this again! 10 stars
I think you killing the drums
So clean!🔥
Not gonna lie… Played this one pretty safe/chill. Sometimes it’s alright to hang back and let the guitars and vocals bring the power while you just support them instead of trying to do all the heavy lifting yourself.
YOU DID THAT BROTHER!!!🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾❤️❤️❤️🔥🔥🔥
Thanks @@keshibartie3521 ! 🙏🏼
what a way to get fired 💀💀💀
Nice chops!!
Appreciate it!
Love it!! PERFECTION!
Thanks!
sounds great, improvised portion included 😅
Appreciate it!
instead of using that bell on the ride just crash ride it for this song since thats what it is on the song :) otherwise great drumming!!
I hear ya. “That’s what it is on the song” is my least favorite reason to do anything tho 😂
well it doesnt sound good when u hit the bell tho on open grooves thats just common knowledge but oh well
@ Agree to disagree. Depends on the setting. If it’s at the end of a big choirful kind of song it can help open the sound up to a more gospel, brighter feeling/vibe. There’s different emotions involved regarding how you use the cymbals. Don’t get stuck in a black and white box. It ain’t that clear cut.
ah i respect that
i also dont mean anything in a mean way in any shape or form. im just saying what i prefer doing and if thats not how u wanna play thats totally okay. we all have preferences and views and we should all respect ppl and their opinions. u play great dude keep it up 🤘🔥
Wow 😮😍
Awesome
Please could you do His Endless Praise by Beyond Music. I was told that when you listen to it once, you can’t stop listen to it 😏
Do you use two different types of sticks?
@@JuicyJuicyJJ-j6e Not on purpose. 😆 I just use whatever I’ve got that’s not broken. Usually I buy 5A. Somehow I ended up with some that have the rubber grip which is nice. But I’m fine without those too.
RUclips drummers, you better what out because Favourite Worship Drummer is on the rise
Lesgooo! Appreciate you.
😂cool drum
Best advice I've ever heard a worship leader give. Be somewhere in the middle. That's my philosophy as well and how I attempt to praise with excellence and honesty.
Right on!
Show
I am thankful I found this! About 2 years ago, Holy Spirit began teaching me about the cadences of the drums. When I watch and listen to your videos, I hear and see the angels ( worship, warrior, and praise) coming to attention to the cadence of the drums. You tap into the frequency of heaven that forges the way for walls to come down and the presence of God and glory (Kabod) opening gates and portals to heaven! Literally, you lead others and set the atmosphere for God's presence...leading others into the worship and frequency of heaven. Thank you
@@lisavan6927 Thanks for the kind words! And amen.
great work man. keep it up.
@@OCNorton Thanks! 🙏🏻
Play the music not the instrument. That makes worship more uplifting..🥁🎤
@@vtwindrums Absolutely 💯
Love these so much man! Could you possibly do "I Thank God" by Maverick City Music?
@@dunkthe3_609 Absolutely! That’s actually on my list to do. I’ll do it next 👍🏻

@@vtwindrums Thanks brother!

nice version in two tom!
You are so good at drums. I’m trying to learn rn. It’s not going that well 😅
@@Reels_and_Rhythms Well thanks! Keep at it…you can do it! Just takes a little time. Once you get rolling you won’t be able to stop!
do you do your own drum beats to the songs
@@CGamesCM6577 Depends. Most of the time I play pretty close to the same parts but I don’t stress about nailing it exactly. I’d rather play loose and something I’m comfortable with than be thinking hard the whole time. I approach things from a leading worship standpoint (nailing the energy) rather than worrying about technical stuff.
Ok because I play the song differently
Great job!!! Nice and clean!! 🥁🥁
@@vtwindrums Thanks! 😊
