Books From My Bookshelf
Великобритания
Добавлен 25 окт 2011
For lovers of books, old and new!
My name is Rosamunde Bott. I'm a writer, and like all writers I love books!
In this channel, I want to share some of the books from my bookshelf - sharing my memories of when I read them - or just reviewing the books I read, and discussing authors, whether it’s fiction, poetry or non-fiction. I’m also going to be giving you some themed book lists, selected from my book shelf.
So - if you love books and would like to share my - and your own memories of my book selections - then do subscribe and feel free to comment on my videos. I’ll always be happy to reply.
I will occasionally update you with information about my own works, past, present and upcoming. I write historical and multi-timeline historical novels, with themes of family history, and sometimes with a touch of the paranormal - and even time travel.

It certainly feels like winter already here in the UK, so I've created a list of Winter Novels to choose from over the coming season. My Top Ten historical fiction books

As a writer of historical fiction books myself, I thought it was about time I presented a list of my favourite historical novels and writers. Towards the end of this video, I add a few more writers, and I go on a bit of a ramble about why I like historical fiction (and what I don't like). Tilly also gets a look in, as usual. Here is a list of the top ten books listed: Poldark (series) by Winsto...
Is Stephen King 's "Revival" the Scariest Book Ever? My Review.

You might be more able to answer this, as it's really my first Stephen King novel, apart from "The Dark Tower". But let's just say - it has its moments. Particularly at the end. You have been warned. King certainly knows how to drive a narrative and keep you guessing... Here's my full review. Dickens' Chilling Ghost Story: The Signal-Man - Reading for Halloween
Просмотров 610Месяц назад
The Signal-Man - Reading. For Halloween, I'm giving you my reading of Charles Dickens' short story, 'The Signal-Man' written in 1866. It was based on the Clayton Tunnel Crash of 1861, but also it was a year after Dickens was himself involved in the fatal Staplehurst rail crash in Kent. The story was originally published as one of his Christmas stories, but is definitely suitable for this time o...

Ten Books that Made Me... Me
Просмотров 6 тыс.Месяц назад
This seems to be a theme on Booktube at present, so here is my take on 'Ten books that made me' - focusing on how the books I read before the age of 20 made me into the reader, writer and person I became. This was a really interesting exercise which gave me a deeper understanding of why I like the books I like, and the kind of books I like to write. I would encourage anyone to do the same! Get ...
Nick Hornby Book Review: "About a Boy"

Is "About a Boy" by Nick Hornby (1993) actually about a boy? I'm reviewing Hornby's novel, comparing it with the film, and discussing the themes and the writing: Why is Hornby so funny? So relatable? And who is 'the boy' really? What is science fiction? And, to answer a recent question, what books classify as science fiction? Here, I'm taking a look at the definitions, history, sub-genres, books and authors of this popular genre - including the differences between science fiction and fantasy. Being 'Star Trek Day' on 8th September, it's also slightly topical... and logical. Get my FREE book here: www.rosamundebott.com/...
The Old Curiosity Shop: A Tale of Innocence and Corruption

Book Review alert! I've just finished reading Dickens' The Old Curiosity Shop for the second time, and I think it was worth the effort! Here's what I thought of it. Spoiler alert - there is a section where I talk about the ending (because it's one of those endings that are much discussed) - but I've given you a warning in the video and a place where you can skip to if you don't want to hear it....

i tuned in today and am delighted to find you have picked TheSource by Michener and Katherine by Anya Seton. I have read and re-read both of them. They do stay with you. i read The Source in the early 1970’s. I was almost 30 yrs old, and i just loved it and “lived it” as I read.. It informed me about the true history of the modern day Nation of israel and how it came. into being.
Hello, New subscriber from Michigan. Really enjoy your videos. I know I will be reading a lot more in the next few years and I have been taking notes on your book suggestions. Not sure if you have ever suggested it but I just finished reading No Holly for Miss Quinn by Miss Read and really enjoyed it. I have read a few other books by Miss Read and also loved them. Would love to hear you read the Christmas Mouse by Miss Read but can’t remember if it would be too long. Reading Winter Solstice again, it’s a Christmas tradition.
Just in the midst of a Rosamunde Pilcher reread :) Winter Solstice being one on my list…. 💗 Thank you 🙏
So funny…I did not like Wildacre! I had read a lot of Philipa Gregory and expected to love it! I read it in my late fifties, or early sixties, so your ‘age’ comments would apply! And, I could not put down Khalid Hosseini’ A Thousand Splendid Suns’. I was listening to it on CD, I think…anyway, I had to go out and buy the hardback because the audio was just too slow!! Thank you 🙏
Fabulous! Thank you 🙏
Lovely broad range of favorites. I can see their influence on a young person. Congratulations.
I have just finished Winter Solstice per your suggestion. I finished in one day. I enjoyed it immensely. Thank you.
I loved Kate Morton’s books, all of them… ❤
TY❤.
Thank you for the Agatha Christie episode. I have read her books and watched the adaptations since my teens. This was a reminder of some titles I had forgotten and am now tempted to reread. A Christmas reading would be fabulous.
I have read many of the books recommended but I really don't think any of them, apart from Hilary Mantels body of work, can compare with the work of Dorothy Dunnett. The Lymond Chronicles and The House of Nicole are two series I return to time and time again. King Hereafter as an amazing stand alone novel about Macbeth/ Thorfin.
Ros, you read that story so well - thank you so much for going to the trouble
Two more really good books by Michener - Centennial and Chesapeake. I loved The Source too.
You are lovely! Thank you for all the recommendations. I love the fact that you do backlist!
I loved Rebecca and liked Wuthering Heights to a lesser degree. The others in the video sound interesting. I read a Joanna Harris book before & I didn't like her deception in hiding who the person was, but I figured it out before the end of the story. (I don't want spoil it for others and I''m not sure of the title--something involving chess and a boarding school is all I remember).
You are delightful. I feel as if a good friend is suggesting books
I was inspired to visit Melk Abbey in Austria based on the character Adso in The Name of the Rose. The church there is breathtaking, I gasped when we stepped into the church at the end of the tour, I wasn't expecting it to look like that!
Rosamunde, I was thinking about books or, rather, saga-length stories I like and came up with two I read a long time ago--To Serve Them All My Days by R. F. Delderfield and The Citadel by A.J. Cronin, both of which were excellent. I also quite enjoyed Goodbye Mr. Chips.
My favorite historical fiction book/series is The Jewel in the Crown (1966) by Paul Scott, which is the first novel of The Raj Quartet. Set in India during the final days of the British Raj and the Second World War, the novel initially focuses on a romance and thereafter the wider consequences leading up to Partition. The TV adaptation was also well-done, I'd put it up there with Brideshead Revisited (the 1980s series, not the movie) in terms of scope and casting. I also loved Bernard Cornwell's Richard Sharpe series, especially the Sean Bean adaptations; and his Saxon Stories - that's where my local library came in handy, as there are something like 13 books! I can't buy all those books, but I can borrow those from my local library.
My husband was working at a job site in Yemen and had taken our paperback copy of Michener's novel Texas. He would leave it on a table in the rest container and after a few days, there were multiple page markers from other colleagues in the book. Also loved Pillars of the Earth, by Ken Follet, and the books of before and after the original novel. My favorite history novel has to be Desiree, by A. Selinko. I have read it multiple times in the years since 1969.

Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel 22:41 Bring up the bodies 25:52 8. The taming of the queen by Philippa Gregory
Hello Rosamunde, I really enjoyed hearing about your list of historical fiction favorites. One of my top five is Wolf Hall. I felt Ms Mantel wrote it especially for me! Another of my favorites is A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth. While it was so engaging that I could hardly put it down, I did not want my time with these characters to end. And Paul Scott’s Raj Quartet absolutely drew me in to the lives of these people. The most recent to join my list is published in 2024 by Paul Theroux called Burma Sahib. It is a fictionalized version of Eric Blair’s time as a British Raj policeman in Colonial Burma. From this experience we can see Blair questioning and examining the empire and his own beliefs and developing some of the views that lead him to become the great writer George Orwell. Incredible. Looking forward to spending more time with you and your pup! Thank you.
Hi Rosamund, I discovered your channel a couple of days ago and have watched a few of your recent videos. Just wanted to let you know I am buried deep in the SECOND book of the Cazalet series you recommended in your historical fiction video, having devoured the FIRST book yesterday! (It's a holiday weekend here in the States.) I am just swimming in their huge family world and loving it so much. I can't wait to see what other wonderful reads you recommend in your other videos. Thank you so much for the Cazalets, really.
I read The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry!! It was a sweet story.. that I remember.. I read it a while ago.. ❤ hugs from Eileen in the USA..
I don't have a lot to go on, having read, from your list, only The Source. But I wonder that no one in the comments (unless toward the very very end) mentioned Rafael Sabatini. Having read almost all his books, it would astound me to encounter historical novel writing that I would consider on a par with his. Is he unknown, I wonder?
Loved your list! Thank you
By the way Sittaford Mystery takes place in winter too, there was heavy snowfall for sure.
I absolutely love Agatha Christie's books. I plan to read her biography soon. Also the window cleaner reminded me Cards on the table by Agatha Christie that I enjoyed re-reading recently
Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer. I’m a teacher and we had a snow day so I read that book in one day looking out at the winter storm thankful to be in my warm apartment.
Thank you so much for your channel...need a reprieve from reading about dictatorships.
Hallo Rose, I am enjoying your lovely videos and bought some of the books you recommended (few days ago I received Winter solstice). Could you make a video in which you recommend us some novels that are moving and or heartwarming? That would be great!
Diana Gabaldon is my absolute favorite. I've read Mitchner and Jakes too, but I need more to but on my list. Thank you.
Agatha Christie and Shakespeare are the two best selling authors of all time. Astonishingly the third best selling author ever is Danielle Steel!
Starring Olivia Williams the 2004 tv movie "Agatha: A Life In Pictures" does a great job exploring the possible reasons for the author's mysterious disappearance in 1926.
I love your little friend and companion Tilly, as well as listening to you in your videos. I love Agatha Christie and I've loved reading your books through the years. You are a well known author here in the U.S. Thank you for using and sharing your talents. ❤
I Thank You very much. I need a good read right now.
To me, David Suchet is Poirot like Jeremy Brett is Sherlock Holmes. I do enjoy the movies from the 70s and 80s, but Kenneth Branaugh, with that ridiculous mustache, is distracting. I haven't watched all of his. I wish Hollywood would put more of AC's books into a movie instead of re-doing the ones that have already been done. Love your channel. ❤❤❤
In the 1970's a friend took some of Agatha Christie's books and eveybody was reading one and waiting the next someone else finished and read it.
Hope oye Day you'll do one about Charles Dickens. My favourite author ever
Welcome back Rosa mande. Great video. Agatha Christie is amazing
Hello. Your channel just popped up on my feed. New subscriber here. What a treat. I read Jamaica Inn many years ago, having lived in the village of Altarnun which is mentioned in the book. Winter Solstice one of my all time favourites. 😊
Very enjoyable. Especially hearing some snippets of your life and connections. Yes please to the readings 😊
I don't agree with the way the plot was spoiled! I read the book and was glad i could just find out myself.
Hello Tilly 👋🐾 And thank you for these wonderful videos.
I am born on Sept 15 so very glad to hear that i share same birthday month/day as the infamous Agatha Christie.❤
Hello, I'm Christina, I'm from Romania and I'm happy to follow you. I also have a 10-year-old big yorkshire Maya who likes to be the center of attention and I like it when Tilly appears on the camera. I like the Marple and Poirot and I prefer Joan Hickson and David Suchet. I like The sadness of the cypress tree and Poirot's Christmas, but I also like Why didn't I propose to Evans. I also read the biography written by Agatha and also the book by David Sushet Poirot and Me.I adore Agatha Christie!
Please keep doing videos about books. Research made our magazine realise that a certain Angel Of Death (by Jack Higgins) readers’ group offers prizes for reading to schools in Asia and Africa. The author of Bleeding Stubs (by Donald Besong) also donates a lot. Encourage more authors to make the world a better place. Read these and other books, and do fun videos recommending them.
