Joanne Harris's "Gentlemen and Players"  Book Review: A clever tale of obsession and revenge.
Of all Joanne Harris's books, this is one of my favourites. "Gentlemen and Players" is a story of obsession and revenge set in a wealthy boy's grammar school. If you like twists - you'll love this! Joanne Harris at her dark best.

Ten Books that Made Me... Me

This seems to be a theme on Booktube at present, so here is my take on 'Ten books that made me' - focusing on how the books I read before the age of 20 made me into the reader, writer and person I became. This was a really interesting exercise which gave me a deeper understanding of why I like the books I like, and the kind of books I like to write. I would encourage anyone to do the same! Get ...
Nick Hornby Book Review: "About a Boy"

Is "About a Boy" by Nick Hornby (1993) actually about a boy? I'm reviewing Hornby's novel, comparing it with the film, and discussing the themes and the writing: Why is Hornby so funny? So relatable? Another really interesting video, Ros. Thanks again. I have to admit I'm a bit squeamish about reading 'Dracula' (yes, really!), but hearing you appreciate it for Stoker's quality of writing makes me think I need to look again. Otherwise, another spooky recommendation would be 'The Signalman' (Charles Dickens). This one just doesn't get old for me!

    Hello! Thank you for the recommendations! I am excited to put some on my TBR list. My personal recommendation would be "The Monkey's Paw" (1902) by W.W. Jacobs . Very short but quite terrifying. It's probably not that much disturbing nowadays when we have all movies with outrageous quality of scary scenes, but still, it's worth reading. The moral of the story is Beware of what you wish. Wisecrack of yours about the difference of perception nowadays and before. I wonder if I would have been left mentally ok if I was a Victorian reading Dracula 😅.

      @booksfrommybookshelf 7 дней назад

      Yes, I thought about The Monkey's Paw - I think I read it as a teenager, but I couldn't remember what I felt about it at the time, so I left it out - but thanks for mentioning that. Yes, I think Dracula would have been a very disturbing read at the time!

    • @Moonflower-v3o
      @Moonflower-v3o 2 дня назад

      I agree with you about 'The Monkey's Paw'! Its power relies so much on the imagination of the reader, a subtlety which isn't always present in some modern work, where everything is shown to us. I remember reading it way back, as a youngster, and being properly spooked!

    The Vampyre by John Polidori was written almost 80 years before Bram Stoker's Dracula and - along with Sheridan Le Fanu's extraordinary "sapphic vampire" tale "Carmilla" of 1872 - was hugely influential on Stoker's story of erotic bloodsucking!

    The 1968 television adaptation of M.R. James' "Whistle And I'll Come To You" starring Michael Horden and directed by Jonathan Miller is a truly creepy version that haunted me when I first saw it and still does! It was remade in 2010 with John Hurt which - while well worth a look - isn't nearly as effective as the original.

    Strange that Tenniel should portray the raven apparently about to take flight when the narrator describes it as "....perched upon a bust of Pallas just above my chamber door..." and later still - "...and the raven never flitting still is sitting still is sitting..." For a summer read, I want to suggest A Month in the Country by J.L. Carr. I hope I'm remembering it correctly and not conflating it with some other book, but I recall it exuding summer atmosphere. It had a bit of an E.M. Forster vibe about it. It's a very short book. The main character is away on a summer project which puts you right in that timeless, out-of-the-world idyll of a wonderful summer book. This is a very vague recommendation but it's a short read and worth is for the atmospheric immersion. Clearly, I need to read it again! I love this summer book list and have added some more titles to my list to read.
