this video was very entertaining and educating as someone who does not know music theory, new subscriber!
Thank you, welcome to the family ✌🏻
this song has one of my favorite key changes ever. it's crazy how they shift it into a new key and then shift it back for the 2nd chorus
Really amazing 🤩

Loving the pop breakdowns!! I’d love to see you do some Taylor Swift songs from Folklore and Evermore. Champagne Problems or Betty would be a good place to start, as a songwriter I think the storytelling in them is fascinating.
Thank you!!! I‘ll look into this!
Lyrics- she’s tryna F. Haha
Soo you won’t break down not like us cause you ain’t like em even if you like em? If you listen to kendrick at 1.5 speed he sounds like Tech 9 or Busta Rhymes . I enjoy… speed rap? Not mumble but clearly pronounced articulate lyrics so fast its hard for some to catch everything. But now im off topic. Dijon mcfarlane , mark spears and Sean Momberger worked with Lamar on the track but im not sure who did what or at what stage of production? Should A diss track be a song of the year, even if its a top tier tune? I’ll leave the morality to humanity ( for whatever thats worth ) . Todays tune doesn’t move me so ill hold any commentary on please please please. Have a wonderful 2025 may it be peaceful and prosperous
✌🏻
Ahhh thank you so much. You have great ear and this is so helpful 🙏
Thank you 🤩🤩🤩
I saw them do this live at SNL it was awesome
Aw man I always thought the line was “your wife BROUGHT us flowers”. Waters kinda ruins it for me it doesn’t work for me now. I mean I still get what she’s saying but her ex’s wife coming over to bring flowers was a better story in my head
😂👍
“‘Sposed to be” is pretty typical of how we talk in certain parts of the US. otherwise I agree, her choice to always put accents in the wrong place bugs me
I love your passion, knowledge and honesty! 💛
Thank you 🤩
Her stage name is a pun on "Chaperone", meaning "Anstandsdame" in German, which is funny given the fact that she is pretty much the opposite of that on stage. It's also meant as an hommage to her grandfather whose last name was Chappell, and his favourite song had the word Roan in it. You're not fully pronouncing her right, "Chappell" is pronounced /tʃæpəl/ with an emphasis on the first syllable.
Thanks 🤩
Listen to the f**king song and then, in a secont listening, break it down. Stopping the song every 2 seconds in the first listenning is dumb and annoying. I couldnt watch the hole video
You had my attention when my eyes caught the Jamie Cullum album in the back lmao, I've loved his stuff for 20 years now. Love your analysis, looking forward to perusing your prior videos as I try to learn how to write music! By the way, Chappell did a cover of 'Last Christmas' with Sabrina Carpenter for a Christmas special, I wonder if that was inspired by the similarities with 'Good Luck, Babe'.
Ha, finally someone appreciating the background decoration!!! Jamie Cullum is one of my all-time favourite artists, a true inspiration and amazing musician. Welcome to the family, I hope you enjoy the other videos as well!!! That "Last Christmas" info is quite interesting!
0:16 btw Kayleigh Rose Amstutz is Chappell Roan, (Chappell is her stage name) so she wrote some of this amazing song herself!
Good to know
Wonderful analysis!
Thank you 🤩🤩🤩
Fortnight isn't even Taylor Swift song of the year, but I don't think any of the potential contenders from TTPD would have been any more deserving of song of the year at the Grammy's. Twice as many songs but half as interesting. The 'penmanship', usually the most cornerstone of her art, is not very good. Melodically and harmonically, its very boring. The album is just variations on some rather dully familiar themes - and yet so many of them! I think quite a lot of Swifties would be peeved if she won. Did the Grammys voters nominate her out of habit? Had they actually listened to this song? Perhaps they decided to reward raw volume of output. She's been pumping stuff out since Midnights: the new albums, the multiple deluxe editions, the Taylor's versions, the previously unreleased songs from the vaults, not to mention the biggest stadium tour the world has ever winessed and a movie that broke box-office records. That's a conspicuous work rate. But to what end - proving she needs an editor?
I have to agree. Die with a smile is objectively a great song. I'm not sure why fortnight is nominated honestly. I'm a massive Taylor fan, but Fortnight is so far from the best song on TTPD. I think it makes sense as an opener as it is meant to set up the theme of her album - leaving a long term unhappy relationship to try again with an old flame. The first lines also connect it to one of the last songs she released (his different) with this line about being sent away. I think the uncertainty and sort of stuck feeling of the chords monotony is a bit intentional given the feeling she's trying to evoke. It's an okay song with an ok feature, but no one can understand why Taylor has a habit of picking the worst singles to release from her albums. This double album was written on tour and i believe was released with very little editing or concern about critical reception because it was more of a therapeutic exercise. The album contains some half cooked songs in my opinion that could benefit from a change in production or a bit of editing, but even her worst is pretty great. Anthology is a bit better from a songwriting and structure standpoint while the first half of TTPD is all about the story.
You're a songwriting teacher that has no knowledge of Nigro or Chappell? What?
I honestly thought I was going to lose interest in a technical breakdown, but your enthusiasm and pacing pulled me in! And it's very rare to watch a technical analysis also pick up on the message, that won my heart ❤️
Thank you 🤩🤩🤩
this was fantastic, thank you for your commentary :)) - hope you react to more chappell, she’s a fresh of breath air in this industry.
Thank you 🤩🤩🤩

I've tossed and turned about my petulant remark and regret it.Unremarkably for a queer person, I'm on the spectrum and sometimes have trouble with "Theory of Mind", the ability to understand that other peoples thoughts and emotions are valid too.
No hard feelings, I appreciate your getting back to me and welcome you to the family. ✌🏼
this channel is so cool! exactly what i needed <3
Thank you and welcome 🤩🤩🤩
I don't know much about music theory, but your enthusiasm made this a very enjoyable watch and easy to follow along with.
Thank you 🤩🤩🤩
I’d have to agree. I, also, heard this song on the radio, and by the second Chorus, found myself humming the melody! It is such a catchy, brilliantly written song. Chappell Roan (Chapel- like a church -Roan- Rone. - is the pronunciation) is a stage name, thought if by Kayleigh Rose Amstutz in honor of her late grandfather. Some part of his name was Chappell, I don’t remember, but his favorite song was the strawberry roan, so whenever she began to become a well known singer she began going by Chappell Roan. I truly believe that she deserves to win the Grammy for the song of the year, being that she was not signed to a record label, but opening for Olivia Rodrigo. Writing songs, and creating music with Olivia’s producer Dan Nigro, between 2020 & 2023, Dan Nigro had Chappell signed to a record label, so that she could release her debut album they had been working on in 2023. It released sometime in 2023, & Hot To Go, one of her songs, tried to launch but never really took off. So, Chappell started to write ideas for hooks, & give them to Dan, they’d go into the studio and create different versions of the song, but it didn’t feel like it was right. Dan brought another producer named Justin in, for an extra set of ears and a fresh take on what the song may be missing & in April of 2024 Chappell Roan released “Good Luck, Babe” as a single. It immediately shot her into the stratosphere, & her album that was released one year earlier finally gained the credit and the audience that she’d hoped it would when it was first released. Out of every song nominated for song of the year, Good Luck, Babe was by far the best written, the most catchy, the longest lasting and overall the best song of 2024 out of every other song nominated, in my opinion. Chappell Roan, Dan Nigro & Justin whatever deserve this Grammy. I cannot believe Sabrina Carpenter is even nominated 😂she’s cute & all but she’s an industry plant. She came from the Disney factory. That poor child doesn’t know what hard work is. Swift has so many Grammys she could fill a house with them, so she doesn’t need any more. Shaboozey or whatever, is like… not even a song because I’ve never left heard it once. And I know everything. Beyoncé isn’t a country singer & she hasn’t won a Grammy yet, then she damn sure don’t deserve one for anything from this album. Crazy in love ain’t get no Grammy, then nothing will. Apt? Idk how to even say the name of that song, but ummm no. Never heard of it or the artist. And no to Birds of a Feather. It’s one note the entire chorus. And Billie Eilish needs to do something with her entire look, because the baggy clothes and black hair just doesn’t seem like HER. NO to everyone but Chappell. But I’m sure Sabrina will get it, she probably slept with the men of the Academy for the awards. If she’s blowing microphones, no telling what she’s doing to old men. She is gross. I love your song breakdowns! They’re amazing. ❤️
Thank you for your kind words toward me. I appreciate your in-depth comment. The sleeping with old men thing is not very appropriate though, let‘s be nice.
F# fan; oh yeah youre cool, subscribing for sure
🤩😂👍
Dave Chappelle Roan. 😄
😂
I think this ranks among the best breakdowns you've delivered so far- perhaps helped by there seeming to be quite a lot of meat within the song to chew on! I especially loved hearing you talk about how Chappell (and her writers) amend the melody in the verse depending on the chord that's being played underneath. I do find it fascinating the pre-chorus having just the one chord, but her hammering in that F# is also intriguing- if I remember correctly didn't Coldplay's ridiculously titled feelslikeimfallininlove have a similar thing with it's chorus? That song I didn't rate overall, but the chorus specifically I found to be a tremendous earworm, and this idea of singing a second over a chord is something I would really like to experiment with in my own writing Quick other notes, I love that you are doubling down on 'A Bar Song' being rubbish- not only do I agree, but I also really hate what's going on with the pitch correction/ autotune in the vocals, nothing to do with the specific writing I know, but still not pleasant sound to me at all! I remember early when I discovered your channel, I mentioned finding you occasionally overly critical, and I'll take a moment to clarify- the first video I saw of yours was the Kings of Leon- Mustang one. Though thinking it over everything you say in that video is accurate, I find that particular song still manages to work despite it's strange aversion to proper songwriting techniques (I heard an interview where the band said they wanted the song to have a live, jammed feel to it, so perhaps that information helped me make sense of the song). I agree with your previous sentiment Die With A Smile is probably the best of these nominations, but I personally wouldn't mind seeing Birds of a Feather win too. I find the melodies in that one really grab me. Keep it up!
Thank you!!! Wow, thanks for bringing up the similarity with the coldplay song, I had totally forgotten, but you‘re 100% correct. Yeah, KoL was a tough one for me, still a great song 🤩
This is an amazing song that has become a queer anthem ever since it was introduced, and thank you for the lesson and analysis. If you wanna get the chills, try searching RUclips for: "Good Luck, Babe! Gaia Music Collective (One-Day Choir)", mind-blowing performance!!!
Thank you 🤩
