Running The Grand Canyon Rim to Rim to Rim | R2R2R | Double Crossing | 48+ miles 11k+ feet in a day!
On Monday October 24 2022 three semi-fit guys started their 18 hour Rim to Rim to Rim run / hike / jog of The Grand Canyon. Starting at Bright Angel Trail Head on the South Rim, going all the way down crossing the Colorado River up to the North Rim via North Kaibab trail and retracing our steps all the way back, it was one crazy day!
The Canyon has some of the most beautiful scenery any of us had ever seen. We were humbled to see everything the canyon had to offer. We had plenty of highs and of course some lows and although extremely difficult, enjoyed our time spent there.

    Once a Month I devoted for Century ride and @ the overall tips agree. The one thing that hit me most of the times is Head on winds sometimes the force is monstrous 20 to 25 miles especially out of trails = local highways That's why pedaling technics are necessary keeping going otherwise depends can be very tiring & frustrating.

    Hey Ryan, thanks for this very nice review. I have a quesiton, maybe you can helpt me :) The hight of the Salsa Framebag (Size 8) seem to be 3cm to tall, do you think it is possible to squeeze it a little bit? My triangle is Top Tube 52cm, Height 32 cm and down tube 63 cm. Thank you so much :)

    • @RyanSarka
      @RyanSarka 19 дней назад

      Hey there! Thanks! I can’t comment on that exact size spec but will say I ran into a similar situation. I most run this bag on a XL frame but my fatbike is a L with a slightly curved top tube. I stuffed the bag into the triangle and it worked surprisingly well! The biggest thing to watch out for is make sure the bag doesn’t bulge out too far and your legs or crank arms hit the bag on each pedal stroke. The large Q factor on the fat bike helped this but I would think with only 3cm you’ll be ok, just make sure all of the straps are as tight as possible. Good luck!

    Be careful with how extensively you use those. Swept back positions put your wrists in a very un-natural position. Probably ok for a 5 minute ride on a beach cruiser, but definitely not longer. Ouch!

    • @RyanSarka
      @RyanSarka 5 месяцев назад

      I thought that at first too but I’ve been very happy with them on 10-300+ miles rides. Generally on easier terrain, I still prefer a normal mtb bar on single track.

      @RyanSarka I was fortunate enough to spend a day with a professional bike fitter in San Tropez, France. He taught me more than I could've ever imagined, including the physiological aspects of choosing the right (and avoiding the wrong) aspects of a bike. One thing I clearly remember him saying was to avoid back-sweeping handle bars as they are ergonomically opposite to your wrist's natural positioning and cause damage to your radiocarpal joints. To explain: He had me hold out my arms directory in front of me in a relaxed position. As a result, I had a slight bend to my elbow and my hands were angled inward (280° left hand & 80° on the right). He said "This is the arms' central point." i took this advice (and much more) back to London and immediately purchased a 460mm flat-bar with a subtle slope. I then fitted it to my bike with the bar sloped forward (opposite to the normal inward) and slightly down. This man is an absolute genius! Not only did my steering, control and overall performance improve exponentially... My entire body felt like it was integrated with my bike regardless of the terrain. I gained 10 watts in output and about 10km in endurance on road and 6km on trails. What's more, I now feel so much better after long rides. Stronger too. For the abovementioned reasons, I will never use a wide (over 500mm) and/or back-swept bar again. Things I wish I'd known a long time ago...but we don't get the chance to spend the day with a world renowned bike fitter every day now do we...?

    You think a gravel bike would do if I plan to do this over the course of a week instead of through riding it?

    • @RyanSarka
      @RyanSarka Год назад

      Yes, there is a fair amount of road, gravel road and rail trail that a gravel bike would actually be better for. There are sections the the mtb was critical for, I think you might have a bit more hike-a-bike via a gravel bike vs a mountain bike but youll be faster and expend less energy on those flatter sections. When I rode it the majority of people (including myself) rode on hard tail mtbs, next in line would be the Salsa cutthroat gravel bike if memory serves. Enjoy! It does take some getting used to. This season I have been using it for all of my trail riding (most being 10-20 mile rides). Originally I didnt like them on more technical trails but at this point I do feel they are pretty comfortable. It does bend the wrists a little more than regular bars but I have been good with them!

  • @oot-n-aboot
    @oot-n-aboot Год назад

    Glad you’re diggin’ them for longer rides. Question: did you need to use a longer stem with the Jones bar than your regular flat bars? I currently run a 40mm stem with 10° backsweep flat bars on my bikepacking rig. But it seems that with the massive increase in backsweep would require a much linger stem so as not to feel cramped when pedaling in the “normal” position. If you used a longer stem, just curious the difference. Thanks!

    • @RyanSarka
      @RyanSarka Год назад

      Hey! Im still enjoying them, Ive actually been using them more and more on my "typical rides" (15-30 miles) mostly out of laziness not wanting to swap them out but Im always getting more used to them. I cant answer your question with certainty because my bike is actually a little big on me. I normally ride a L but during the pandemic I could only get an XL; because of this I ride with a short stem and the large back sweep actually puts me in a slightly more upright position that I like. Assuming your bike fits right out of the gate you may want to lengthen the stem. I do think that would depend on where you normally hold on. For instance if your holding on close to the cross bar you'll be more aero then at the end of the bars. Unfortunately I think the best thing to do would be to give them a try and see whats comfortable for you and your riding style. Sorry this not a concise answer!

    Thanks for your video with tips & encouragement. You did a great job recording while on the bike & editing after… I didn’t expect that when I saw a typo in the title: “Ride you’re first…” vs “YOUR”. 😊 I liked it & subscribed.

      It’s a Garmin Forerunner watch, it works well for me since I use it in other things then just riding.
