I love your channel Ceramic and this is a wonderful video but you make many mistakes I feel obligated to show you. Your research is deep and within the context of the video, all is fine. But when you go onto tangents and out of topic definitions you start to mistakenly describe terms and realities. Firstly: you use Maoism incorrectly throughout the video. I think you mean "whatever Mao did" as your definition of Maoism. Which isn't what it is. China nor Mao Zedong was ever Maoist. That is a Peruvian ideology. Mao Zedong was Marxist-Leninist and his contributions to this ideology is called Mao Zedong Thought. China is still following Mao Zedong Thought and has never strayed from it. If we talk about Maoism as if it's whatever Mao did, then that would be an incredibly foolish ideology. Times change and along with it, policies. Completely and dogmatically emulating everything Mao did is neither Marxist, nor actually Maoist, as Mao himself fiercely opposed dogmatism and what he calls "book worship". This contradiciton is vital. Second: The Great Leap Forward was not a failure. The point of the GLF was not having less deaths and birth. It was to catapult the productive forces of the country to new heights, which was successful. The fault of the policy was the tragedy of the famines and the deaths that followed. We can see the merit of the policy while acknowledging the faults. Whether it was worth it or not is subjective. Third: You call Deng Xiaoping a pragmatist capitalist. Excuse me but that is an incredible insult to both capitalism and Deng Xiaoping for you misrepresent both. Need I remind you he was the one in charge during Tiananmen Square riots? If he was a capitalist roader, why didn't he give in then? Deng Xiaoping fought all his life alongside the communist party. He fought in the Civil War and in WW2 courageously for his country and for communism. The communist party was not a monolith nor was "whatever Mao did" the only and single way communism was understood and characterised. The problem here starts from your misunderstandings about communism. I'll get to it clearly. You make another mistake about Deng Xiaoping when saying his vision was new. His vision was anything but new. Instead he was actually a conservative in his economic policy. As he says: "Perhaps Lenin had a good idea when he adopted the New Economic Policy" -Reform Is the Only Way For China to Developed Its Productive Forces, 1985 Communism has never been "no market". Within the Principles of Communism by Engels, Principle 17, private property, thus, markets were always supposed to be a part of the early stages of communism. In fact this was supposed to be the norm in even the most developed countries. A country like China during the 1960s for Marx's sake was not in any way fit to take out private property. Lenin in his "The New Economic Policy And The Tasks Of The Political Education Departments, October 17, 1921" and "Role and Functions of the Trade Unions Under The New Economic Policy, January 12, 1922" talks about the concept of private property, capitalists, bourgeois elements and communism working together. He talks about this briefly in the State and Revolution as well. Moreover, Mao himslef has said in his "ON STATE CAPITALISM, July 9, 1953": "The present-day...economy in China is a capitalist economy which...is under the control of the People's Government...is linked with the state-owned socialist economy in various forms and supervised by the workers. It is not an ordinary but a particular kind of capitalist economy...a state-capitalist economy of a new type. It exists not chiefly to make profits for the capitalists but to meet the needs of the people and the state. ...this state-capitalist economy of a new type takes on a socialist character to a very great extent and benefits the workers and the state." Fourth, your video implies the party was engaging in a weird political battle when in fact you yourself make it clear the country was in turmoil of a legal kind. The communist party, stated by it's constitution, a Marxist-Leninist party, first by the Gang-of-Four, engaged in absolutely non-Marxist practices of spiritual idealism, by the way of governing through "vibes" instead of dialectical analysis, and then by the way of the Two Whatevers, dogmatism. Not even mentioning how by law they were comitting crimes due to unlawful conduct. Deng Xiaoping, an incredibly respected comrade, so respected, was personaly reinstated to the party by Mao several times, persuaded the party using theory. I recommend you check his archive. As he says: "Comrade Mao Zedong himself said repeatedly that some of his own statements were wrong". I'm sure you cannot surely call someone a pragmatist capitalist just because they dared to question communist theory and developed it. Communist theory has been revised by even Marx and Engels himself. In your other videos you also imply China is no longer communist. I recommend you read "Socialism with Chinese Characteristics: A Guide for Foreigners" along with "Principles of Communism" by Frederich Engels and the Communist Manifesto. You can see that China is absolutely in line with the fundementals of communism. Lastly, you imply Deng's contributed to a free-er press and information era. This is absolutely incorrect as Deng himself wanted to crush these events which he called counter-revolutionary. He just didn't want to do it by arresting people. "Beyond all doubt, schools should always attach first importance to a firm and correct political orientation." in "Speech At the National Conference On Education, 1978" and "a person in charge of the preparatory group for the formation of the local federation of writers and artists talked a lot of nonsense...To put it in a nutshell, these people want to abandon the road of socialism, break away from Party leadership and promote bourgeois liberalization." in "Concerning Problems On the Ideological Front, 1981". But that can't be true, because the article says the fiber was synthesized at Kyoto university, that Ri-Sung-gi was on the team that synthesized it and did bring it to Korea (it wouldn't have been North Korea at the time), but it does not say that he made vinylon himself. I have no idea which version of events is true. I'm just pointing the discrepancy out.

Amazing video, there isn't nearly enough information out there on Chairman Hua's stint in power. He essentially gets boiled down to a footnote or as having been a lackey of Deng, which isn't at all accurate. He was quite the complex figure and it's great to have learned a bit more about him here.

One correction, Deng was not a capitalist at all. His goal was always socialism, he just believed in allowing limited capitalism in some areas of China to modernize the economy in preparation for socialism.
