very nice! we have concrete steps that arent level anymore. i wonder could i build a wooden structure over it that is level?
Very nice but even better if the steps were wider, like 3 boards vs. two.
Love you're content. TY for shearing. I need a very small office doom, like 3.5 m(9 ft) I'm tall so I want to dig it down or build up cob. I live in 35-75+% humid and about 45 in rain fall yearly. Any thoughts ? I want it small for low ac requirements.
Your welcome, I am not clear about your QS , do you want me to build it for you or you want my thought
@@bramsafari6974 I was just asking what you thought.
you can build it on top of a concrete footing or any high footing to protect it from the rain fall so that it would not touch the dirt
@@bramsafari6974 TY for replying. I need to make a 1/2 basement or a 2 ft riser. Will that mess with the strength of the dome's/structure to much ?
@@frankenstein3163 No it wouldn't
No comment except, all of his tools seem to be brand new. That can say a lot.

He doesnt have crap tools like you got....😅😂
Shoes are brand new too, just saying
Hi very well presentation. Would you please give me the name of the material. I highly appreciate.
What about the sides (especially the visible left side) -- why not cover up the stringers and pre-existing concrete steps with the same material and color as the planks? It looks unfinished from the treads past the stringers and over the pre-existing concrete.
Can you hang from it or stand on top?
Very nice!!!
Hello, you should have done the testing with both doors closed with and without insulation. i think garage door closed without insulation would have been way less Than 78 to start with just my opinion.
Just like a cloudburst dome.
Amazing work! It looks like the plans for tis are based on a 2V tuncated icosahedron, not a dodecahedron. Most geodesic domes and dome calculators are based on the latter where the frequency is easy to tell by counting the struts on a line between the centers of the pentagons. The centers of your pentagons don't have struts on the same strut extension but your pentagons are surrounded by hexagons soccer ball style. This would be easy to insulate with foam triangles that had notches in them where your hubs are that could be cut with a hot wire. Securing a center plate over each hub to get it the same height as the strut, combined with the foam, would give you a very secure base for a thin plywood covering. However, that will leak like crazy so you could use commercial grade elastomeric roofing strips that ran along the great circles of the domes, making it easier to cover large sections quickly. Lap them so you start low and move up so the water sheds properly. That coating can be installed with adhesive and then a heat gun would melt the overlap to each other. This would give you a fairly inexpensive water-tight shell. On the inside, add another hub extender and then use thin gypsum strips and also follow the great circles so you don't have to cut all those little triangles. I get that A-frames are easier, but you've got a very cool dome!
This is a great video and deserves more views and comments. Don't stop making them. Support will come.
Thank you
So the slotted joints slip in a lot easier to the hexagon shapes, put a slight bevel on the ends. I saw that it was a problem as it was being assembled.
Good idea!
very nice. Where did you get the plys?
a place called Exotic woods in Burlington , ON . exotic-woods.com/
Very nice build! I really like that geometry over the typical 3 frquency domes.
It’s absolutely amazing and inspiring. Merci ostaad🙏🏼

What a thoroughly Beeeauuuutiful structure ! One recalls Japanese wood charing techniques to rot proof ( one wonders if this could be applied to positive effect ) ❤ .
Thank you , I don't know how to rot proof it , the aim was to have it covered and use it as a temporary shelter but since I couldn't get it covered I moved away from building them ,
@@chiselwoodworking Another idea to look into may be E.T.F.E ( Ethylene Tetra Fluro Ethylene ) from Dupont . It's an ultimate film one might consider for stapling over the outside in triangles . It takes sixty pounds pressure to enlarge a knife hole in it ! ( available in various weights ) . It's Non biodegradable and can be recycled . All worth considering on an installment plan given it's value . Oh yes it's slick and self cleaning just like the non stick coating in frying pans . E.T.F.E is non combustible though it will melt . * * " Bucky Works " by J.Baldwin To keep moisture out the seams an iron might help for sealing since can be melted. One could experiment with foil between iron and E.T.F.E. though Dupont may have advice on this and any other matters .
@@chiselwoodworking One has noticed site videos showing how the Japanese wood charing technique is done . Seems pretty straight forward with a hand held constantly moving torch . The Japanese have used this method to rot proof their architecture for centuries . And it looks cutting edge natural just add some landscaping boulders and moss ( lol ! )
@@brentdobson5264 Hey Brent , Thank you so much for all the info .I will look into it
Wht is the angle of the slot in the wood struts?
they are 10 degree
@@chiselwoodworking Thank You! 😁
I have the plans to that dome and was wondering if there were any issues with the dimensions on the struts and hubs? I’d like to build one in a similar size as a test build for a larger one. Did you cut everything by hand or use a CNC router?
the plan I got had issue with it so it took me a while to remediate it, I cut them with hand
@@chiselwoodworking Were there issues with the plan dimensions or….
yes there are mistakes in the plan sorry I cant help where they are since I am not building the dome any more
I also have the plans and found a few small dimension errors that took a little time to workthrough, nothing that was too difficult. Check and double-check.

Does the plastic come in a bag to hold the rock wool or did it come as a simple sheet? can you provide a product link for the plastic? thanks!

loved the music you chose for this video. Are you going to give up the plans for this? 👍✌🖖🥃
I think the strength of the structure will be weak!
On this one I think you are right since it was a model, but in general geodesics are immensely strong structures due to their geometry

as I stated it is a 9 meter , diameter dome . its height was 4.5 meter tall i dont remember its strut sizes since it was prefabricated build from china

Olhe as rosas, não os espinhos
beautiful, functional. The connector octagonal circles make the dome more solid and easier to assemble as well
Interesting.
any plans?
Yes there is a plan from the original creator of this type of the dome unfortunately he passed away and his plan was gathered by his son which we found out to be having many mistakes

There is a phone number on the banner. If you can make it out. Also a website. I can't tell what it says.
I am sorry but I moved away from making these domes
@@chiselwoodworking - have you moved away from making these domes due to complications with Darwin Dome's design/engineering? I am interested in whether you have found another solution for timber geodesic domes?
@@realclt I did move away from these dome s because 1. i wasnt getting enough orders to build 2. I found them to be very expensive to cover and insulate so I decided to suggest an A frame homes instead
That didn't sound like the garage door....
what do you mean ?
This is the best alternative i have seen so far. Just need to figure out the angles on the joints.
Did you find the angles of the joints?
I think it's 10 degrees
I believe it is 17
I think there are just a few different lengths of the struts, that get more when the frequency of the dome increases. You have to know where they go, but not really so much the angles, if you know the lengths the angles take care of themselves.

The insultation is fine for thermal reasons but in fact has negligible impact on soundproofing. You could surround yourself in an entire room filled with Roxul at 120db music and through the walls, dampen the sound only 6db to the outside. I would be concerned whether the plastic wrap is flammable. If so, use a flame resistant plastic wrap or fabric. Sorry. The idea is super to soundproof but Roxul insulation does not work for this purpose. But for thermal insulation properties, great idea.
Awesome, I'm gonna convert my new garage Into a woodworking shop and need to make sure I cut the noise down.
After eight months Being in the shop I can attest it Does work
That sounded much quieter. Would you say it was worth the cost/effort?
I do, and now that we are in winter time it actually serves the Insulation purpose as well .
