Mucking About With...

Sharing things I like about music gear, this started as a channel for the Headrush Pedalboard, but they released a new model which didn't appeal to me and I stopped making Headrush specific videos.
I have since sold the Headrush and bought a Fractal FM9T.. which I also sold, (because I hated it) now I use a Quad Cortex, but there are enough videos explaining how that works so I thought I'd just make my channel Generic.
If I want to make a video about music gear I like and that I feel is under exposed or misrepresented on RUclips I'll make a video, if not I'll just get on with life.. nobody needs another RUclips gear channel :)

What is an IR?
A lot of people are coming to modellers who are used to amps and cabs, but they are not used to IRs and all the other terminology found in these devices, so here's a down & dirty quick starter guide to IR's..

Headrush controlling Midi pedals in the FX Loop

Headrush controlling Midi pedals in the FX Loop
I have an MX 5 and the FX send/return method works great except I can't get the looper to play through the amp if its hooked up like this. None of my recorded loops play and I recorded a new loop that doesn't play through either, but if I plug into the front of the amp instead of the FX return then my loops play through normally. I have the global setting for the FX return set to Stomp and I have an FX loop last in the signal chain. Any thoughts why the looper doesn't work hooked up like this?
My bet is you have the looper set to post not pre in the looper settings..
That's a great instructional video on MIDI controlling the Headrush (HR) unit from a MIDI pedal as a external MIDI controller. But what if you want to do it manually, say through a ART X-15 Ultrafoot bi-directional MIDI controller ? You see, I have this problem...I Just returned my new Headrush (HR) Prime under warranty as it can't process or produce MIDI signals in & out; I got another new replacement under warranty and it fails equally so. Firmware is at 4.0.0 for it Everything works well on it except for MIDI. Through testing with DIN-5 plugs with cables or using only a USB 'B' connection to a Mac or Windows computer, or only using using a 'Bluetooth WIDI Jack' to a Mac, no MIDI signals goes in or out of the Headrush Prime. This is very sad. I was hoping that this digital signal processor could do MIDI. Just so frustrated. Perhaps I am wrong. Please enlighten me and show me how to do it. Thank you.
Sadly I have only bad news.. the midi implementation in the Headrush is garbage, I've sold my Headrush as I got bored waiting for them to address the flaws, (why can't it send a PC message from a scene??) I now use a Quad Cortex, and while the midi is a lot better some folks still want more, however for my use it does all I want (And would work with your controller, even though it's older than god!))..
Using an amp block into the front end of a nice sounding clean amp sounds just fine. No ir no speaker emulation. Headrush output set to amp instead of line. For example I have a Fender 100 watt Super Six and I am using the stock Headrush 100 watt Plexi amp model. It sounds exactly like it should .
I agree, into a nice clean amp that will sound great. My only reserve is when you try to use that method loud, and I don't mean bedroom loud I mean fighting a loud drummer and a bass player with a real SVT in a rehearsal room loud, it will feedback un-naturally, maybe even out of control, but if you can get it to work for you then that's perfect! There are no wrong answers :)
@@BastardBluesBand Haha! Look who I'm teaching to suck eggs..
This video helps a lot thank you
OMG! You just made my dreams come true. I have been mixing my guitar rigs like this for decades (yes, I began recording in the early 80's). I had no idea the Headrush was capable of this. (I only ordered one a few days ago, and it hasn't arrived yet).
I have an old valvestate amp. I'm wanting to purchase one of these or the Core. Would I plug this in to the effects loop?
Yes, Don't use Cabs or IRs in the Modeller because the Valvestate has a cab and a virtual cab through a real cab sounds like ass. (at volume, it would work at low volume) but it's the way to go to keep the feel real.
@MuckingAboutWithMyHeadrush Thank you for your reply, I very much appreciate the advice. I will get an frfr at some point, but I have a nice collection of headphones (Sennheiser, Hifiman, Beyer Dynamic, etc) with which to explore further. It looks like I will have plenty to do for a while as this will be my first modeler.
@@isadorealire5722 It's a rabbit hole my friend.. there are so many ways to effectively use a modeller, none are "right" just find what works for you and enjoy.. just in headphones you'll have a blast making rigs. Good luck!
Very good and usefull !!!
Thank you for this bit of insight!! I was ready to return my Headrush MX-5 for refund.because I couldn't get a decent sound from the unit going into the front of my VOX Cambridge 50..Wow,I am excited to get busy with this unit now..
I hope it works out for you! :)

But was settings should I have on my amp while following this method of turning off amp and speaker on the board ? Where should be master, gain, channel on the amp ? Could you reply please ?
@@serhiiderkach8126 If you have the amp and cab off in the board then the real amp settings should be where you think it sounds best.. do you want it clean? Dirty? Edge of breakup? If you're only using the Headrush for FX then the amp is for you to choose.. If you want to use the amps/cabs in the Headrush then the amp should be as flat as possible.
@@MuckingAboutWith Thank you for your reply! I do want to use headrush for effects such as delay and distortion etc... But won't the actual amp still distort the sound of the headrush delay for example ?
@@serhiiderkach8126 Yes, but so would a modelled amp.. I spent 30 years putting delay into the front of a Marshall Plexi, sounded great :)
Hi. Could you pick apart "where were you?" Thank you so much.
@@DFTaudioVisual Who's it by? :)
Jeff Beck. Thank you.
@@DFTaudioVisual That's weird I searched Beck yesterday and nothing showed up, today, top result. To me that sounds like a strat into a gainy marshall with a ton of reverb, all the magic is coming from his control of the volume control and tremolo arm, I don't think I could come close with my complete lack of tremolo skill! (Not to mention I haven't got a strat) :)
Nah! being distractive and pedantic will get you nowhere, any ir is merely a simulation of a speaker cabinet in operation in conjunction with whatever guitar happens to be being used through it is all, -it's better termed as a more direct depiction as a 'cab sim' instead.
Run your high gain amp blocks into the front of a fender tone master twin....then run the same high gain amp blocks into a FR headrush 800 w.You will be surprised which sounds better...even the clean blocks
This really helped me; before this I just thought "impulse response" was kind of a cool term, but not one that helped me understand much. Now I feel like I have at least a rudimentary understanding of what they are. Thanks a million!
awesome explanation <3
I have an MX5. So, I REALLY don't need to go out and buy a Headrush FRFR, Line 6 Powercab, or Fender FR-12. I'm happy with the sounds of my Blackstar HT40 and HT60
@@IamTheScottD Same here, I still lug a 4x12 and tube amp around so I can plug my Headrush into the FX return and make some noise.. I had FRFR speakers and they brought me no joy.
@@MuckingAboutWith Just saying "4x12" makes my back hurt! LOL
@@IamTheScottD I had cancer a while back and the surgery left me unable to lift anything heavy (I'm ok now, no worries) but to keep the band going the rest of them said they'd carry all the gear.. I'm contemplating getting a 2nd 4x12.. ;)
@@MuckingAboutWith Well I'm glad to hear you're ok!! Oh, definitely go for the 2nd 4x12!! LOL
If you put the FX loop block do you have to change the Mix level so it still passes the signal through to IR block? Normally wouldn't the signal be send out fx send of Headrush and since it's not returning , it would just be no sound going to IR block/FOH?
@@AtTheSourceStudios yes you have to use the mix control to send the signal out, but it doesn't look for a return, so it works like a Y splitter.
fantastic. tnx!
Hello, great video/s thank you so much. So a little about my setup, I currently have the Headrush Pedal Board, and 2 FRFR Headrush 108's and for the life of me the last 3 years owning this setup, I cannot stand the muddy, bassy sounds of the unit, I now know pretty sure its the FRFR 108's.... The FRFR 108's are great for vocals and E-Kit through a mixer, they they work great..... So I decided to look back into regular guitar amps.... I believe I am going to go for the PRS MT-15 Amp (which I here is killer loud for a 15w and very metal and great clean sound, I just haven't chosen the cab yet, if I'm getting 4x12 or 2x12..... Anyways if I just wanted basically stomp pedals I can do with your first method in this video correct? This would save me a lot of money and I can have a ton of effects, my other question is (since I don't have other amps to base off of) I'm assuming the Headrush Pedal Board is great to use like the way I wanting to use or the way you demonstrate in this video?...… as far as the 2nd part of the video, I cannot see me using that, unless I only wanted to utilize different amp/cab sounds, correct or if I'm running live in a small club?? Sorry for all the basic questions but since your already a Headrush Pedal owner I'm sure you have a ton of experience dealing with FRFR and non-FRFR.... because every video I see on the Headrush Pedal board everyone's sounds are amazing except my muddy, bassy less then life sound, its frustrating trying to play, and constant tweaking almost always... I miss the 80's/90's when it was easier and better sounding lol.... Thank you so much for any info and your videos and rigs as well, so much help... Edit: another question, when I see the 4 cable method, many people say they like that method because they put the wet sounds (aka as reverb, delay, chorus, etc.) after the amp/preamp and all the distortions and overdrives, noise gates, wah, volume, before the amp/preamp, like your method 1...… my question is, is it that much of a different compared to just having everything run before the amp (your method 1) .... ?? does it make it sound better, what's the pros/cons??
I've never bothered with the 4 cable method, it seems like hard work :) The best results I get are by taking the signal after the headrush amp and before the IR/Cab, sending that to a power amp and 4x12, it feels like an old school setup that way. I currently either use a Soldano SLO100 or a Blackstar Amped1 as the power amp, the soldano sounds better, the amped1 is easier to carry.. :)
@MuckingAboutWithMyHeadrush thank you brother for your input... what cabinet would you go after for metal/hard rock/ with a nice clean tone? Thanks for the 2 options, I think for now I would have to settle with the Amped1 because of the nice price, lol
@@FPVMgunit13 Look at Jet City HDM 100's they are designed by Soldano and sound great! Much cheaper too.. I like Celestian Vintage 30's, I have 2 cabs, one with four G12H's, and one with two V30's and two Creambacks.. There's not a huge amount of difference, can't go wrong with V30's though!
@MuckingAboutWithMyHeadrush thanks brother... love your insight... I definitely will...ty
I take my hat off good sir, fantastic job !
Thank you! it was a fun one..
AWESOME
Won’t this double the power amp?
@@xyloftalexander4369 Double the modelled power amp? Yes it will but until Headrush let us separate the pre and power amps what can you do..? Same problem on the Quad Cortex, you can bypass the power amp on the Fractal, but who wants to deal with that operating system ;) (joke!)
@@MuckingAboutWith I was hoping you knew some sort of black magic, thanks for the time bud
@@xyloftalexander4369 If you want to get adventurous you can mimic an amp with a drive and an EQ.. listen to the amps without an IR, they're horrible sounding things..
@@MuckingAboutWith Yeah i've been messing around with gain staging drive pedals. I am super new at it, will let you know how it goes.
Was thinking of getting a tonex one and running this into it so this is intriguing
I just got my headrush prime today. I am going into a black star Toby Lee 6L6 50 watt head with 2x12 cab. It has 3 channels one spanky clean, the next is similar to Marshall plexi and the third channel adds over the top thump and distortion. My question is what channel do I feed the head rush into and at what volume level when I’m setting it up? I intend to go through the send and return of the amp head and into a 2x12 cab. They are really lightweight and I don’t mind carrying them at all. I want the ability to switch heads and effects but I don’t know where to start volume wise and what channel.
The question is do you want to use the 3 channels of your amp? or use the Headrush for all the preamp changes? If you want to use your amp look up "4 cable method" in the manual. If you're using the Headrush amps plug into the FX return, and take a send either from an FX block in your rig, or use the alternate output, I would do this.. look in global settings, set the alternate output source to IR in, set its output to headphones.. (You now have a volume control on the main panel.. the headphone vol control) now plug the headphone out into the FX return of your amp.. this will take the signal just before the IR and send it to your amp.. the signa will then carry on through the IR to the main outs for the front of house DI. To do this you must have the IR last in your chain.
Will it work the same way with modelling amp? I know idea may sound pontless
If I set the master knob on the headrush to 11, my Marshall amp volume knob would need to be turned to just a hair above 0. And if my dog accidentally brushes by it, it would blow my house down. Or am I missing something?
This is correct! :) But the best position for the main volume knob on the Headrush is about 7.
I got a boss katana mk 2 100 and I got a power amp in of my amp would I be able to use the amps
Yes, plug the main out of the Headrush into the Katana power amp in, don't use an IR or cab block in the Headrush, should sound great!
Thanks for the advice
Thank u. I think it's the hotone maybe I upgrade again thk
How u plug into a normal mixer. I put a hotone mp100n threw mixer sounds terrible. But great threw the valve amp. Should i get therush
Your problem sounds like you don't have an IR in the chain going into the mixer, if you do.. choose another one!
Good explanation but I would have started by explaining Ir stands for Impulse Response.
I missed loads out, but I just record off the top of my head so things get a bit random. What I really wanted to say was (in a very loud voice) "they aren't f980ing amplifiers!!." To help the poor souls who get sold IR packs of amps not in the Headrush.
That helped me understand the para metric
Hope you make videos discussing these kinds of things for the Core. Example: before I experience hours of frustration - would the same approach in this vid work for the Core?
It should be the exact same thing.. I asked Headrush if I could have one at cost to make videos with but they weren't interested, so I haven't got one.. I will make more videos but they will still be on the OG pedalboard.. they should translate though.
Oh this is excellent I do a similar thing on my Roland gr55 guitar synthesizer pedal where I can change up to 8 parameters like this with the Wah and also with the foot switches.❤
I have found no problem with running high-gain amp blocks, properly adjusted, into the front of tube or solid-state amps. I do not care for the clean amp blocks so I bypass the gigboard for cleans. I avoid speaker/IR blocks (but occasionally use one). i find there is tone suck with just effects blocks but in a live performance it is not very noticeable.
I haven't made a video for over year but think I should make a new one because I've started not using IRs or Cabs at all in the core sound.. I like the clean amp blocks though, the MS30 and Vox are great, but I do edge them into breakup quite a lot for live use.
@@MuckingAboutWith I agree with both of you. I am using the Amps as needed(but not ccabs) , using my ears. I considers them as a black box/smart equalizer thing they do the job.
why have i not got this already in my headrush
Hi, is it the same principle with a Boss IR2? And can use the IR2 as an Amp/Cab Block in the MX5? THX
Hiya, yes same principles apply.. oddly I just ordered a Friedman IR-X which is the same thing in a different box and I intend to use it in the fx loop of the Headrush, I might turn off the IR in the Friedman and use one in the Headrush so I can put time based effects between the amp and IR.. you could also get sneaky and put the Headrush in the fx loop of the IR2, just use fx in the Headrush.. or go stir crazy and run a parallel path in the Headrush and have a Headrush amp on one side and the IR2 on the other.. just don't double up on anything on the same oath, so an IR in the IR2 and an IR in the Headrush will probably sound bad at volume..
thnx for tip ! very helpful
How do you not use a preset and are able to have 2 different amp settings in a scene? When I try this without scenes, it doesn't work, and there's still a gap. Don't you have to save any setting as something? This amp gap thing is a killer for live performance. Thanks!
As I show in the video you have to avoid presets on the amp and gain blocks completely if you want seamless transitions, even if the presets change nothing they will introduce a gap. They are fine on modulation or dtime based effects. The only way to have no gap is to have 2 amps or distortions and flip between them using scenes.
@@MuckingAboutWith Hmmm, but in a scene, if you take a stock amp and save the settings, (not as a preset), for a dirty sound, when you use the same amp and change the settings for a clean amp sound, it also changes the dirty amp settings, no? This has been my experience. Also in my clean scene I want the first pedal to be a compressor, but in the dirty scene, I want the compressor to change to an overdrive pedal. Is that possible? Thanks!
@@sbrave Okay, I see what you want.. put 2 amp blocks in your chain, set one crunchy and one clean, then in scene one have amp 1 (and the distortion) on and amp 2 off, in scene 2 have amp 1 (and the distortion) off and amp 2 (and the compressor) on and they will swap with no audible gap.. If it still doesn't work let me know and I'll make you a rig.
@@MuckingAboutWith Thanks! I should've said even with 2 of the same amps in a scene, it seems when you change settings on the clean amp, it changes the settings on the dirty amp as well? Maybe I'm still missing something. Ok, so no way to have the compressor change to an overdrive pedal between scenes? I'll have to get rid of one more block and have the overdrive and the compressor in the same scene. I may take you up on making a rig : )
@@sbrave I'm at the in laws at the moment, I'll make you a rig when I get home, what flavour Headrush have you got?
good info! I run my Prime into a Blackstar Amped 1 on the Flat channel.
Ha! My Amped1 arrives tomorrow.. I'm fed up carrying around a huge tube amp to amplify the box I got to replace the huge tube amp :)
If you plug the headrush into the front of your amp and use the effects only, can you use the actual amp volume for control? Or because you’re using the headrush it takes that out of play?
You can use the amp volume, just use the headrush like a normal effects pedalboard. I'd turn the amp up though and put a volume block in my chain so I control the volume with the treadle.
"I pose like an arthritic rocker.." love it!
I have a question about a set up rig like this but........ If I wanted to play directly into the front of my Fender Twin Reverb Tone Master, could I do that with a preset like this (or any other song) and how would I do that.....? I just watched your other video about plugging into the front of the amp but it wasn't a particular song rig..... HELP ME !
Hiya, if you want to go into the front of your tonemaster you really only have 2 options.. 1. Use the rig I made but leave out the Amp and Cab/IR (Why? because your Tonemaster already has an amp and an Speaker(Cab/IR).. but as a lot of the tone of this song comes from the amp you''ll then be trying to get that tone with your tonemasters amp controls.. I've never used a Tonemaster so I have no idea how easy or hard this would be.. the second option is use this rig but only remove the Cab/IR and set your Tone master up as clean as humanly possible and hope that it just amplifies the Rig's amp nicely.. Putting a modeller into the front of a real amp is really a home playing solution only, as you're introducing many many gain stages that will not translate to playing loud.. aka live.. if you want to hear the rig as made you're best of with an FRFR Speaker solution, the Laney 2x12 for example, or in=ears. Hope this helps!
Thank you so much !!!!!
You nailed that tone, you have a great ear 🤘

Thank you so much! You make me feel guilty for not having made a video for a year :)
Love your videos on this unit, just bought one and would have been lost without your video on how to plug into a standard amp!! Thank you brother!
Great processor, and great amp🎉
i only have an mx5, a combo app and various cables. i want to use my combo app only as a speaker since i don't have any frfr or any cabs. want to use amp and cab from my mx5. how should be my chain and settings then? i'm trying to connect from amp's line in but bass sounds buzzing even on low volume. thanks!
How is the hybrid method possible with the mx5 ? I know you mentioned it at the end of another Video, but I dont understand the method you describe their, yet. ❤ hope you can help
There are 3 Elements that make the sound from a real guitar amp. 1. The Preamp - This is where tone originates 2. The Poweramp this just makes that tone louder 3. The Cabinet/Speaker this imparts a resonance and the characteristic of whatever cab/speaker is being used. All Modellers emulate these 3 items in software, in the Headrush the Amp blocks are the PreAmps, the IR is the Cab/Speaker, the Poweramp doesn't add character, just volume so it isn't modelled separately (Massive oversimplification there! Fractal users have control over the preamp too) So to use your MX5 with a real guitar amp the only part you're really interested in is the effects and Pre-amp, the amp block in the MX5.. because the real amp has a power amp and a cab/speaker so there's no need to replicate them in the MX5 ..they exist.. So what you need to do is get the signal out of the MX5 before the IR (which is going to emulate the Speaker,) so insert an FX block after the amp and before the IR, this will take the preamp signal, send it out of an FX send socket .. plug that into the FX return socket of your real amp.. this socket in real a amp intercepts the signal after the Preamp, so what you're doing is using the preamp tone from the headrush and the power amp/speaker of the real amp.. this way you can flip between different amp tones in the headrush while taking advantage of the power amp/speaker in your real amp. I would organise my blocks like this: Wah - Pitch - Overdrives - Modulation - AMP - Reverbs - Delays - FX-SEND - IR That way your effects are going to the real amp too.. the signal will pass thru the FX block and IR appearing at your main outs with whatever IR you chose intact, the other signal has no IR and is off to yoru real amp via the FX block.
@MuckingAboutWithMyHeadrush wow, thanks for the detailed answer. I think you mentioned the info I need. I will read it again later with more focus ! To sum it up: I want an IR signal for the FOH/PA, and a signal for my amp/cab for live monitoring and rehearsals. so I got the fx loop block placed like u said in front of the IR and connected the fxsend from mx5 with the fxreturn from amp. As a result, the output goes off. I wonder, if I have to go back from fx send(amp) to return from the mx5 to solve this problem. I tried it with a patch cable, just to close the fx loop from the mx5 and it worked. Sorry for my cryptic English.
@@danbag0815 There's a mix control in the FX block, try it opposite to how you have it...
@@MuckingAboutWith ok, I will check this till evening. I just started with HR two days ago and my head is smoking every now and then. I really appreciate all your help and will let u know if i was capable to apply your instructions. 😄
@@MuckingAboutWith it works ! 🙂 output goes into my interface, fx send into the return from the amp. Actually you had to change the parameters in the fx block where you mentioned... mix to 0% and with the send I can control the volume on the power amplifier. Next time I will Figure out if the four cable method could be useful for me. Not important for now. Im glad the mx5 does what I want and I don't need to buy the bigger pedalboard Thanks for your help , really! You rock
Cool video. I have a Gigboard with the Headrush pedal. My biggest use thus far has been getting rolled off volume tones in a higher gain rig while still having the noise gate active.
