How Greg Wright MMR made his garden railway fun to operate!
this is an awesome layout
We agree!
This is great! Thank you for the presentation
You're welcome!
My layout has a very short logging line on it as part of the whole layout. The logging line is by no means as complex as your layout. You have mentioned and listed things that will help my logging line at least look better considering its simplicity.
Glad it can help!
Fantastic model. I too am modelling the CPR and this is a great inspiration for me. Well done.
Glad you enjoyed it!
What a presentation. A few things to note. Although the latest owner of St. Maries River RR stopped running logs from Clarkia by rail to the St. Maries mill in 2009, the track is still intact and most still exists all the way to Bovill, ID. The water tower in Eastern Washington is at Ewan. My parents went to a farm auction there in 1984. Although the track was gone, the bridge over the highway was still there and so was the water tower. And last, what a treat to see the reconstruction of the Nisqually River Bridge at McKenna. I was 6 years old at the time. We lived a couple of miles north of McKenna along this same Chehalis line near Roy. What started the entire scenario goes back to July 4 of that summer. Kids were lighting fireworks on the bridge and, of course, ignited the creosote on the deck. Roy fire dept. put the bridge fire out fairly quickly. In true Milwaukee Road fashion, the inspector said the bridge was good for continued operation. If memory serves me, the bridge survived until August when it collapsed under the copper concentrate cars. The ore poisoned the river all the way to Puget Sound and killed all the fish. The railroad bought the Roy landfill, lined it with the proper materials to avoid ground leeching, dredged the ore out of the river, and dumped it in the landfill. Then they got to pay some nice environmental penalties. I honestly don't recall the track laying dormant for 6 months, but it was definitely out of service for 2 or 3 months. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the historical details, it's always great to hear from people with personal connections to these railroads!
@4DPNRMovies the Milwaukee Road is my favorite. I was so glad to see these images of the Nisqually River Bridge collapse. I wanted to be able to see that again. I only got to see the initial wreck from the Hwy 507 bridge around the bend in the river just before the school year started. After that, I saw one little bit of the reconstruction. I know the story made the Tacoma News Tribune. I'd be interested to see images of that bridge before the collapse because it was originally all timber with no steel girder at all but I was too young at the time to have a good image in my mind the way it once was.
This is a very interesting presentation, it's fascination to see the imagination of model railroaders!
Thanks! That's definitely why we have this channel!
I had my entire layout in a closet. 🥰👍👍
LOL!
Lotsa work and Detail evident. Stillll ...The Stereotypical "Toy Train' signature artifact: FAR too small radius curves, are Always included. Clearly NO Toy Train Builder is willing to NOT use every square inch of Layout space.. Even if it means Silly tight radius curves . Ones rarely if Ever found in Real life.. for obvious reason. Up Your Game Kids !
Definitely a lot of compromises in every model railroad, that's for sure!
🤠👋🚂🗯
I’m working on building a historic narrow gauge logging railroad layout located in the deep north woods. Your logging pond video is great reference on design, assembly, and result. Thanks for this great posting.
Glad you found it useful!
So far I’ve made about 5 turnouts in HO scale, but I haven’t placed any of them yet. It’s got me unsure as I don’t think I’ll be spiking at all and I’m not sure about pliobond. I have two of the quick sticks but I’m thinking about gluing the ties to the roadbed and then laying the turnout down on that. I’m not sure if this will work well or not. Then I’ll have to figure out how to wire the frog. I’ve used prefab turnouts with a wire already added for this frog, but we’ll see how this goes. The things that I wish more people would mention is how to actually get it added to the layout and finish it, like painting, wiring, and then adding ties where they need to go so it looks seamless.
I agree. I've used the method you are thinking about, and it works fine as long as you keep your track gauge handy and use it often. But I would spike the rail to the ties every inch or two anyway, even with the Pliobond.
Awesome work, gotta love fellow 50s Norcal modelers, I’m very impressed by the correct rolling stock and buildings!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for posting that. It was interesting.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Not that great of a similar to fake and window views out of perportions
Nice, what’s the radius Kato track used on the helix? Any thoughts on helix vs nolix?
I asked Kevin your question, and he said this: "I use the Kato super-elevated double track (Kato product numbers 20-185 and 20-186). The radius of the two tracks are 18 7/8" and 17 5/8" respectively." He said that he didn't have room to do a nolix, or he would have preferred it.
I grew up in the Davis / Sacramento area but I don't recognize this crossing of the Sierra Nevada. Is the a protolance layout location. I have been an SP fan since those years in the 70's and 80's and by the mid-late 80's got hooked on the D&RGW but still a fan of the SP.
I don't believe so. I think this is a fictional crossing location.
Seeing a controlpoint named "Raymond" maked me click on the "thumbs up" button straight away!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow! The N Scale Layout probably costs as much as a nice Ferrari. Beautiful, beautiful!!! Operating Sessions must be fantastic.
All perhaps true. Thanks for your comment.
Next level work. Awesome job!
Thanks!
Glad you liked it!
Is it possible to get the part number of the Kato track used in the helix?
Kato 20-185 and Kato 20-186.
@@kschannel3752 Thanks!
Anyone know how to contact Michael? I've been modeling CFNR and NWP in N scale for years. My grandparents were in Petaluma, and would love a model of the depot. Great layout!
I wish the Puget Sound Model Railroad Engineers could go all steam and go in the 1930-40 time frame.
A good thought. But of course, as you know, the higher amount of maintenance work involved in keeping steam engines running is a challenge...
Another decoder that can work with dead rail, but communicates through wifi instead of Bluetooth, unlike blunomi, is called LocoFi.
Good to know. Thanks for your comment!
012 Buckridge Stream
I like the thinking of reversing colors to weather cars. Very cool colors of my native Calif. Thank you.
I've seen Petes layout, great. And Pete is a great guy.
Agreed!
I really enjoy seeing all the steam locomotives. Especially the rare 4-8-0 12 wheeler types.
Grounds for Divorce !
Thanks for clinic. In the boxcar demo outside, I wasn't clear how Mark was handling the situation of painting a boxcar that had a door that opens. Anyone that was there can give a hint what Mark was doing? I saw that there was someone videoing from over Mark's right shoulder, anyway to get a stream of that?
Always great watching your videos and your impressive layout
shapeways went out of business . I use the one printering co that starts with J L c I made mistakes to learn them but I think O K ! I can comment again later ?I do not have room to have own printer . There are local printers also ! 8001 resin and translucent finish is good .
Thanks for your comments, John. Good to know!
Great video and tips!
Glad you liked it!
Really interesting presentation. Thankyou, it explains a lot. I have a ton of TT from Triang, it really is a great setup. 3mm is the perfect scale if you are pressed for space. Steven.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Intetesting exchange of know how with gorgeous examples. Any wheel runs fine on code 100. How to know which one will pass on 40, 55, 70 ? It can be costly to replace a lot cause we like tiny old branchline rail size. Not to mention steamers... Thanks for the show.
Great point!
Very informative!
Glad you liked it!
Yeah! A great concept for keeping the Great Northern alive . Keeping the Jim Hill dream alive well done gentlemen.! All the best for you. bj n scaler and gn fan. 😊
Yes, indeed! Thanks for your comment.
Interesting about the car with a rotary coupler at both ends. I always assumed that they would cut off the caboose / helper engines before the dumper which would pull the train through.
Glad you found it helpful!
As someone who is in the process of rebuilding my layout so that I can do operations on it this is a fantastic video! Thanks for sharing.
Very welcome! We were hoping it would do just that!
Does Chuck make the Eagle files for the CTC panel available? Thanks
Too bad I can’t be there for the spring meet. I’ll be out of town that day
This was a great session to get an introduction to what JMRI can do. Most people are overwhelmed when they first see what JMRI can do. What needs to be remembered is that only a few people in the operations group do most of the setup and the majority of the people just use the output of JMRI, primarily the manifests/switch lists, and run their trains according to those and do not get involved in setup. Thanks for this informative video.
Good point. Another advantage of being involved with a club.
The layout was just awesome, It drives me nuts when people in our hobby run their mouth when they don’t have all the facts. I believe. there room for all this great hobby. Most people I know don’t like blowhards.
glad you enjoyed it!
Enjoying the series on operations. Love hearing the different ways that people develop their layouts and the different types of operations. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you're enjoying them. Check out the latest one we just published today:ruclips.net/video/lpIlRcaV1JI/видео.html
Wonderful stuff. Jim Y is a wizard… one of the all time greats!
Thanks for watching!
O.M.G thats the finest layout I have ever seen Love the locos
I try to add a fiddle yard or like described "outside word to my RR. after seeing video , even though mine is a podunk style shortilne . This plan sure is much alike to what I plan ! For train running flexiability , I only need one engine with radio control or" dead rail which is more simple than DCC wireing hassles for my own situation . I was impressed with this layout thanks !
Thanks for your comments.
AMAZING! The story.. the history.. I doubt the "history" element of the experience was given a whole lot of consideration, but seeing the videos and photos was fantastic.
Man-O-Man, What a story! What an adventure this was for you and your 2 friends, and good friends by the way for being so keen to keep doing this over and over so many times with you and of course supportive parents to humor your passion. I love the ingenuity you guys all showed in development and overcoming obstacles during all of these outings and that you recorded all of this in pictures and movies. I loved the scenes of your friend with the black cowboy hat riding shotgun on the front of your #3 speeder. The fact that you 3 teenagers survived out in the woods alone for 2-weeks on the last trip is a testament to your fortitude in those days. Young kids today cry when they get a flat tire or run out of gas in town on a paved surface Ha ha. This is definitely a Top %1 You Tube video about adventure and a Top %.0001 For railroad historians, modelers and enthusiasts alike. Glad you saved some of the artifacts and I hope you have it in your will to donate them to a museum for everyone else to see them. @39:26 were you guys eating old K-Rations from WW2? They looked like miniature boxed Army rations for sure. Also, on the last trip you made that lasted 2-weeks, did your father meet you all at some point for a resupply of foods? ❤💯👍👍
Are these tracks still there ?
Just the part from Tuolumne-River Bridge #8 I believe, but all heavily overgrown.
Very interesting but not for me
Jerry, awesome presentation.
Glad you liked it!
