Debunking Urban Myth While Opening the Belly of the Beast - aka Laws' SP #9 -CCRY's SP #18's sister
Ok, Belly of the beast is a little sarcastic, I do admit. SP #9 deserves all the love we can give her despite where she is living. Why do we cover her? Well, Owens Valley spans many miles, Owens Valley do houses only so many train enthused volunteers. And some of you asked about her...
Many , me included, who love #18 and love to see her steam soon again, also love #9. After all, both were sisters on the Carson Colorado line.
Check out this video for the first serious step undertaken to arrest the decay of poor older sister SP #9. While she was built earlier and retired later than #18, she has not gotten the love she needed, yet.
Urban myth - yup there are many - check out this video.

Chasing Leaks, Calcium is for Bones not for Historic Steam Locomotives, Calcium Scale from Bad Water
Просмотров 10121 час назад
Little calcium is water can be good for our bone but be more than a nuisance for operating any steam -based equipment. Historic steam locomotives like the CCRY SP #18 are no different. See what our volunteers found when chasing a leak. Sand on top of a Steam Locomotive- -or- How friction controls a locomotive's ability to pull & move
Просмотров 9021 день назад
See when friction of metal on metal is lost and nothing moves. Locomotives traveling on tracks rely on the friction between drive wheels and tracks. This friction can be smashed to nothing if either the track is wet or slippery due to rain, snow, ice, or leaked oils - or if the load the engine is pulling is too heavy. All those points, an engineer has to consider and he has tools at his hand to...
How to find a leak of a valve on a 1911 Baldwin Steam Locomotive

      Especially when they put the wrench on the bolt head backwards. You should never apply pressure to the movable jaw of the wrench by pushing on the handle. Pull the handle so all of the pressure is on the fixed jaw.

    I believe that the order indicated the locomotive and rolling stock was to be moved by the diesel. Possibly someone stuck some oily rags in the firebox. That happened on occasion. With those two tubes out on the bottom, the chances of the belly of the beast being extremely pitted are very high. What does the mudring look like?

    • @CarsonColoradoRailway
      @CarsonColoradoRailway День назад

      Yes, it now can be positively be confirmed that the diesel engine #1 was pulling her to Laws. There is no way she could have steamed into Laws. You are likely correct that someone may have burned something in the smoke box to make it appear as such. Just like as they did in 1966 for the filming of "Nevada Smith". We found remains of unburned 1960's animal cracker boxes and pieces of wood in the residue on the bottom of the smoke box. Mudring? I'll have to check with the powers who know more than I - possible a volunteer who knows and was there can add here to the comments. I will ask also and will share later what I find out.

    • @CarsonColoradoRailway
      @CarsonColoradoRailway 18 часов назад

      After speaking with #9's lead engineer, the story is, we have not had the chance to look at the "mud ring". The other tubes are still in place. After going systematic about arresting the decay, a boiler test may be done to assess if at all life is left. That will tell us about the pitting issue on the boiler "floor".

    • @DavidSellars-b8l
      @DavidSellars-b8l 17 часов назад

      @@CarsonColoradoRailway Unfortunately, I think the "floor" is going to be very pitted. If the plugs in the firebox legs have been in, and I don't recall them being out, there will be much carnage. I hope that I am wrong. It would be great to see #18, 9, and 8 all steaming together but I don't think I will ever see it. What does the bottom of the smokebox look like? Did the Espee just cut the tubes loose in the front and leave them in place? Really wish that I could get down there and put my eyes to it.

      Currently, the goal is to arrest the decay and do not harm. The Laws volunteers' plan is: raise fund for a task first then execute the task, on to the next. So all depends on the fundraising successes and volunteer commitment. So if both are present and pushing for her - the sky is the limit. No she will not fly but who knows what the next generations are up for. Laws' lead volunteer refers to her as the space shuttle of the 19th century....

      @@CarsonColoradoRailway I’m torn on seeing #9 returned to operation. While it would be cool to see a second SPNG locomotive return to steam, I feel #9 already serves a good role at Laws as a display locomotive, letting kids climb up in the cab and imagine they’re driving a train as they pull on the levers and ring the bell. Plus there’s the huge expenses to operate and maintain a steam locomotive, and it would almost certainly run on a limited schedule. Ultimately, I don’t think it’s necessarily necessary for #9 to return to steam, again as cool as it would be to see. It comes down to if the pros to do so outweigh the cons, or vice versa. That’ll be up to Laws and if they do in fact want to inherent the costs to maintain and operate a steam locomotive, in addition to all the other expenses they already have to maintain and run their museum, for the benefit of having a working steam locomotive to use for demonstrations and potential train rides. Their other current large project is extending their tracks south about a mile or so, so #9 would have some room to run. Though they do already have their Brill Car for rides, plus special visits from #18 to have steam.

    • @CarsonColoradoRailway
      @CarsonColoradoRailway 18 часов назад

      Well - historic artifacts really shouldn't be treated like playground equipment. It's simply not safe for kids to climb on a rotting locomotive. And sorry to say that but that is what she was before she was pulled into the engine house. I can't tell you how often I, myself, hit my heat on the entry to #9's cab when supervising my granddaughters play on it. Quite honestly, while they loved it, I was always worried the would fall out the window when leaning out. I totally understand the desire, but she simply was not safe play equipment especially when parent let their kids run wild and unsupervised. (yes, I know what I am speaking off, am a Laws volunteer, too, and have stopped kids from climbing all over) A museum is not a playground. I know Laws was special in that aspect and lucky, very lucky. Have you visited #9 lately? Seen the crack in the smoke stack base? Waiting to fall off? just to point out one actual hazard. So while we understand the natural desire - we also want to make sure #9 will be around for another 100+ years. If she ever will steam again, we are not even close to touch that topic. Preservation is the goal right now.

    • @ChrisJones-gx7fc
      @ChrisJones-gx7fc 17 часов назад

      @@CarsonColoradoRailway yeah they shouldn’t be climbing on the engine itself, only inside the cab. I thought Laws had put measures in place to keep kids off the engine (outside of just putting a fence around it). In Monterey, CA they had a display steam engine that kids really were allowed to climb all over like a playground (this was the 2000s), but it’s since been fenced off due to the liability hazard. So if just cosmetically restored, would #9 be put back where she was before with the display train, or is Laws thinking of something else?

    I get the part about calcium building up because it was in the water, but if they had explained a little more about what they were doing (looks like they were flushing the fireman’s side injector so there’s no sitting water while the engine is idle?) would make the video a lot more interesting and informative. Another question I have: what was he brushing onto the injector before screwing the final piece on? My first thought was lock-tite, but I’m not mechanically inclined enough to know for sure.

      Scale had settled on the seat of the check valve and flushing and draining was being performed. The crew was applying generous amount of copper anti seize on all threaded components to make disassembly and prevent galling when tightening. Anti seize is used on all components subject to the heating and cooling cycle of a steam locomotive.

    first suggestion is to get an idea of what is going to happen. the workers probably have a 'meeting' to discuss the work, be sure you're in on it. that way you can better anticipate where to get your shots. next, when possible, increase your angle of shots, go more to the left or right, don't be shy about lowering your camera or zooming in to get past people, so as not to get those great be-hind shots. think about or try to get shots from the other sides as there is alot of clearance. and if this is for public consumption related to the restoration of the train and its' parts you could discuss staging a few shots to show what is going on. but all in all nice work.

I guess the coal has to be moved out somehow. Question to all out there and those outside of the US, are those signals also used in your countries?

    Two things the 20th century loved: asbestos insulation and Pyranol! Best transformer cooling liquid ever made, and probably one of the most toxic--PCBs out the wazoo, but it worked. MAN, did that stuff cool--we still don't have anything quite as effective, otherwise the PRR GG1 might stand a chance at running again... if somebody built a whole new chassis for the body to ride on, but that's another matter entirely. More relevantly, it's great to see the asbestos get the boot--it did and continues to do far more damage than Pyranol likely ever could (unless you worked on the GG1s in the shop, then RIP). We have the Victorians and their infinite paranoia of burning to death to blame for that one. :) Nice work on the repair, she'll be burning dinosaurs in no time!

      Thanks for this note. I have to check with my brother he is in HVAC, I have not heart of Pyrano but as a chemist, this does make me curious. The Victorians did a number on us in many aspects, some good some not so good. They also used radioactive Radium water to cure may ailments. I am glad we so such only in a very controlled fashion today (nuclear medicine). In my lab at college (I am dating myself), we still used without hesitation asbestos heat wrap and heating pads ... time's a changing. To the better for all of us - let's keep the good ole time alive but with the substitutions that keep us healthier for longer ;)

    Wow, very cool! My grandpa was the curator of the museum there in independence in the 70’s. He was the one that acquired all the buildings out in the back for the ghost town. He would have loved to have the locomotive there at the museum, he was a huge train fan I havnt been back in years and I was surprised to see the railroad shop there at the museum, They lived in a single wide Mobile home behind the museum by the creek,

    It is a good thing that SP #18 is a smaller narrow gauge steam locomotive that can be transported to different locations on a specialized tractor trailer rig. That way this steam locomotive can be taken to other narrow gauge lines such as the Durango-Silverton line.

      Yup, that is correct. I am just back from visiting some other steam engine trains and those standard gauge engines can be rather intimidating - stay tuned, I'll share some footage soon.

    I was on vacation in April 2024 staying at a hotel in Bishop California. On April 9, 2024 I drove to Independence and visited the Eastern California Museum. On that day Slim Princess 18 was inside a shop building and could not be seen. However I took a number of photographs and I recognize the streets in Independence California.

      @@gregorich-lauefamilyvideos5746 Standard Gauge. The primary reason why they are not shipped on their own wheels is incompatible buffer strength with common carrier railroads and the higher cost of arranging special movements on their own wheels. In the pasted some transit rolling stock was shipped loaded aboard railroad flatcars. Because of special handling costs from the railroads it is cheaper to ship using lowboy trucks..

    WHAT IS THE FULL HISTORY OF THE LOCOMOTIVE I KNOW THAT THE DURANGO AND SILVERTON HAD TO GO TO USING LARGER LOCOMOTIVES BECAUSE OF ALL THE TOURIST BUSINESS THEY WERE HAVING HAVING ALL MORE CARS BUT ONCE UPON A TIME BOULDER COLORADO HAD A RAILROAD KNOWN AS THE SWITZERLAND TRAIL OF AMERICA DAVID ADAM GRENIS MAPLETON AVENUE BOULDER COLORADO

      Thanks for the comment/question. Yes, as I heard, #18 was not quite able to pull the full load while being in Colorado at the Durango-Silverton Line. But she steamed well and did help while being there. Stay tuned for more historical details about this Southern Pacific Engine #18. She was built in 1911, originally for the Nevada-California-Oregon Railroad. Southern Pacific Lines acquired her in 1928. At that time #18 started working on the Mina, NV branch before being moved to work out of Keeler, CA - on the last segment of the Carson Colorado Railroad in operation after World War II. Check out a couple other videos which have some of the details - see below - and stay tuned. I am working to catch up on producing videos about the engine's and the railroad's history. ruclips.net/video/HeYt6zCBi7E/видео.html ruclips.net/video/vQvH_1MxXqg/видео.html ruclips.net/video/0K7Jj_cKZ2g/видео.html ruclips.net/video/spgzL-0ePEk/видео.html

      Yes - Owens Valley is still beautiful - open, sunny, and clean air (except on windy days...) Southern Pacific's Engine 18 is at home in Independence, CA at the Eastern California Museum (155 N Grant St, Independence, CA 93526). the museum website is www.inyocounty.us/residents/things-to-do/eastern-california-museum The organization behind the rehabilitation, maintenance and operation is the Carson Colorado Railway Inc (an all volunteer non-profit) - our website is carsoncolorado.com/ - we are planning on a couple of public events in 2024 after the 5-year FRA staybolt inspection has been completed - check out this video for more info ruclips.net/video/HeYt6zCBi7E/видео.html - stay tuned and visit the website for more details. If on a visit in Independence, check with the museum staff, they may have time and show you the engine which is housed there in its dedicated engine house. Laws, where the engine was giving public rides in 2023, is just north of Bishop, CA.

    It's too bad they can't rebuild the track from Laws to Independence Just my personal opinion, but I think it belongs in Laws since that is where it ran in regular service. At independence it just a stone-cold monument

    • @CarsonColoradoRailway

      Oh, all of us steam train enthusiasts would agree, it would be nice to have some more extensive track to run the engine and train. Check out this video ruclips.net/video/HeYt6zCBi7E/видео.html - it gives a couple more details. SP's #18 ran up and down the line bewteen Keeler and Laws, and was actually allocated to Keeler during its operation - not Laws. SP's engine 18 has always belonged to Independence. After all, it was Anna Kelly (Kearsage's Station Agent Grace's daughter) who wrote SP and made the donation & transfer of the engine happen - yes - to Independence in 1955 before the line was shut down in 1960 and ... Anna also pushed folks in Laws to follow suit - SP donated #9 to Laws and it has been there since 1960, a stone-cold monument ever since. SP's #18 was also first sitting behind a fence as fading display of railroad history. But then the imagination of Independence citizens was triggered and they rehabilitated the engine to made it run - SP's Engine 18 definitely belongs to Independence. FYI - Engine 18 couldn't be further away from a stone-cold monument. SP's Engine 18 is a true living, breathing, educating monument - she is alive and well, and will be steaming this year again - watch the above video and stay tuned for upcoming events. Oh, you are not alone. It is a challenge, a big and costly challenge but then very likely in the late 1990s when the idea of making 18 steam again was born, the very same perception did exist. It is a challenge and as long as we have enthusiastic folk who want to make that happen, take the lead etc ... anything can happen
