Stewmac 335 kit - a different take

My personal build of the Stewmac ES 335 kit. Although I am an artist, a woodworker, and I've created some cigar box guitars, I am by no means a professional nor a guitarist. In my quest to make more elegant cigar box guitars, and to also electrify my guitars beyond a basic piezo, I decided to build this kit and use it as a learning tool. Did you skip sanding like they suggested in the Texas toast video? I saw another RUclipsr who used an orbital on theirs. While the stewmac video with the driftwood guitar guys mentioned that maple and other hard woods typically don't need sanding. So just wanted your take as a woodworker and having done the kit - sand or no sand prior to finishing?

  • @NathanSink
    @NathanSink 7 месяцев назад

    Regarding your Bigsby, the B7 should work on a 335 style guitar. However the Vibramate that is needed to go with it is the V7-335 Mounting Kit. It looks like the one you used is a V7-LP. I know it can be very confusing. But you made it work & did a great job!

  • @NathanSink
    @NathanSink 8 месяцев назад

    Hi Kymberly. I was wondering if you could confirm the fretboard radius on this guitar. The StewMac instructions say to use a 16" radius block to sand the frets down. However, the typical Gibson 335 fretboard radius is 12". Hoping you can help answer my question. Thanks!

    • @kymberlybyers6218
      @kymberlybyers6218 8 месяцев назад

      Although I have this particular guitar here at home right this minute, I'll have to take it into the shop tomorrow and check the radius with the tools I have there. Off the top of my head I don't recall which radius block I used

    • @kymberlybyers6218
      @kymberlybyers6218 8 месяцев назад

      As side note if you have a fret rocker, you can check how well the Frets are seated, and if you don't have high spots then you don't need to sand the frets to level them because the Frets will be level. It's at least worth checking and maybe tapping on the frets to seat them better before you do the extra step of sanding and then recrowning the frets

      Nathan, I checked the radius, and it is definitely 16 inches. Also the guitar weighs 7 lbs 11oz. I did add the Bigsby, which according to a Google search weighs 12.5 Oz. Good luck with your kit. Hopefully you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine.

    What was the point of buying the kit if you were just going to swap out half the parts anyways? You Shou have just done it from nothing. You have all these tools and all that wood and did what someone else did. It just doesn't make sense to order a kit then swap out all the parts.

    • @kymberlybyers6218

      You are correct the goal is to do it from nothing. The point of the kit was to learn electric guitars. I'm not a guitarist, and I needed a benchmark. I'm already working on one from scratch, but I needed something to learn from.

    The B7 will fit the 335, but not with the Vibramate mounting unit. You can use a B6, (tailpiece mounted) but it has no tension bar.

    • @kymberlybyers6218
      @kymberlybyers6218 8 месяцев назад

    Nice work! I'd have liked a little more color in the finish but that's a personal preference. As for using the wrong Bigsby for that type of guitar....live and learn. You made it work which is cool even if it sets off the Asperger/OCD part of my brain.

    Great, inspiring video - thank you Kymberly! I am considering a Cutthroat, although most of my riding is single day, on an unloaded or lightly loaded bike. I am wondering if there is any merit in a 2x drive train instead of 1x. Any thoughts?

    • @kymberlybyers6218
      @kymberlybyers6218 2 года назад

      Personally I find the 1x system enough for me. I can not see myself ever converting back to 2x because I just don't see the advantage since the 1x systems have plenty of range.

    • @paule4
      @paule4 2 года назад

      @@kymberlybyers6218 I initially thought a 2x would give more versatility for when I'm doing more paved road sections. However, it's surprising how much effect the large tyre size has on increasing the gear inches. For example, a 46/11 top gear (in a 2x system) with a 29x2" tyre gives about 120 gear inches which is way over-geared for this bike in my opinion. So I may instead do as you have and look at 1x. As you show in this video, the low gears are more important for such a bike.

    • @garrettsmith8286
      @garrettsmith8286 2 года назад

      Paul. As for me, owning a couple bikes of each I will say that the gear range on a 1x12 is no issue but the difference I find and can be a blessing on certain trails is the fact that the jump to each gear is less aggressive. This keeps my cadence smoother and I find myself getting less fatigued over a longer distance.

      @@kymberlybyers6218 it’s funny because I’ve been looking to modify my 2020 Salsa for some lower gears. I even asked my bike-shop guy who told me I would have to replace the brakes, shifters and derailer in order to get a 50 sprocket in the rear. I googled your recommendation, however, and several articles also came up that confirmed for me that it was a reliable and practical way to remedy the problem. It’s also far less expensive than the alternative. I rode 1/2 the Great Divide this summer and the climbs with a loaded bike would have been more manageable with some lower gears. The videos on the site you provided were also quite helpful. Prior to your video above, I simply did not find this product or references to it, on any of my google searches. It just didn’t come up. Thank you! Can you give me a link to the rear sprocket you used? That would also be much appreciated. Thanks, Bret
