Destination Earth (1956) - Designed by Tom Oreb for John Sutherland Productions
Просмотров 58 тыс.11 лет назад
Wonderful, stylized, mid-century modern film produced for the American Petroleum Institute depicting the benefits of oil and capitalism. Beautifully designed by both Tom Oreb and Victor Haboush. I believe Tom did the designs for Earth, and Victor for Mars. I'm not interested in hearing anybody's political views about this, just enjoy the cartoon for what it is. Walt Disney 1955 Nash Commercials With Mickey Mouse Designed By Tom Oreb

Commercials for the American Motors 1955 Nash automobiles designed by the late, great Tom Oreb in the Walt Disney TV commercial unit. Quoting from the wonderful book 'Cartoon Modern' by Amid Amidi, "There was a little kid that used to write to Walt telling him to stay away from modern art because it's Communistic. So when the commercial came on, he got a letter from this kid, a little malconten...

American Look presented by Chevrolet (1958) - The Definitive Mid-Century Modern Populuxe Film

The definitive populuxe film. This Jam Handy produced, Chevrolet sponsored technicolor movie, was designed to get the American public ready for the 1959 Chevy Impala. Just a decade earlier, car companies were producing one model, and you kept it as long as you could. Now, there were options, and colors, and fins, and you wanted the new model every year. Some may call this propaganda. Hell, it w...
Hold on Mickey’s cookin rn🤔
Salt whiskey hated these commercials
Don´t be grumpy Pluto! You are the only one not "off model"!
Obviously done by communists who want to over throw America by having them buying a car from a small company based in Wisconsin (a communistic state full of liberals) rather than a car built in loyal, all-American Detroit. You can sure fight commies by buying a Ford. Especially if you bought a station wagon with fake wood on the sides. That'll show Kruschev!
Man, I knew Walt had a temper but to flip because some kid called this style 'communistic,' dang!
Hanna-barbera looking cartoon
Oreb and the Hurrells (who produced this commercial and founded the unit) had free reign to do whatever they want with their classic characters. You can guess what happens next.
Who voiced Mickey here? Anyone know?
Jim MacDonald
According to Disney animator Eric Goldberg, one fan wrote a letter to Walt Disney saying, “Dear Walt, what have you done to Mickey?”. And upon reading this, Walt told the animators of these commercials to stop. By the way, who else came from the 2022 Mickey Mouse documentary?
Others came from Steamboat Silly
@@TwilightLink77 I just saw it among my RUclips recommendations.
Tattle tail snitch, Mickey can't have nothing back than, not even ads.
I love the style and the car. But mickey and minnie have kids in the back seat which means…
That’s Mickey’s nephews Morty and Ferdie
this wasnt supposed to be about mickey mouse
0:36 minnie siniestra incredible remaster
Anyone came here from Steamboat Silly?
I'm still surprised Disney allowed them to use this version for that short!
@@TVC_StudiosMe too!
Old 🗝️😂
mini Mouse looks pretty
This film is a classic
This is how on Documentary the tales of a mouse some person said dear Walt what have you done to mickey? That commercial thought Mick and Minnie got Married! Ohhh my days
They are married. Uncle Walt said so in 1933.
If Hannah Barbara invented Mickey Mouse
Ed Benedict, the designer of many early Hanna Barbera characters, worked at The Walt Disney Company in the 1940’s.
With how much Disney is sucking up to the left wing nowadays, it's safe to say that the "kid" was right. I mean, Paul Rudish's Mickey Mouse could also be seen as "left-wing pandering".
the kid in 1953: "modern is communist" businesses today: "ok, i guess we'll just try to be communist then"
Michael mouse 💀
🗿
Why did Walt agree to this?
Starring mickey mouse. Who was he voice by?
That's the same design that was also used at the end of the wonderful world of Mickey Mouse cartoon, Steamboat Silly.
@andrewscungio3200 Jimmy MacDonald, the Disney studio's sound effects expert. He took over as the voice of Mickey in 1947. (Though Walt Disney did Mickey's voice in the Mickey Mouse Club.) Jimmy MacDonald also voiced the mice in Cinderella, and I think he voiced Chip & Dale.
0:10 I sometimes do that. Clack my heals.
I love the trivia questions on Ruth's blackboard on the Netflix stoner comedy Disjointed. This answers the one on S1E9. Either this or the Raid commercial, which were both made in 1956. Stuff my parents watched on TV when they were like, late 20s.
Do you suppose Paul Rudish looked to these commercials for inspiration when he did the newer Mickey Mouse cartoons? In addition to Mickey, Minnie and Pluto advertising Nash, there were also ads for the Hudson featuring Donald Duck and his nephews.
Very possible. The Paul Rudish shorts have also made little references to this Mickey design so the creators are definitely aware of them!
It seems this particular zipper technology had three variants - eight, ten and twelve rows. This was the latter - and doubled up to 24. A big difference from over a decade later when, first, Trans-Lux' Flashcast and Adcast systems, and Naxon Telesign, with their teleprinter-style perforators, came on the scene.
Is this the only time Disney authorized an off-model Mickey?
No Walt Disney was unaware until he found out and stopped them
Better than Tesla (just kidding😂)
Somehow It's a complete mystery of why they stop making rambler cars in America decades ago. But you can still find a treasure trove of rambler cars nationwide, but at a very high price. I recommend that you type in the word google and you'll see what I'm talking about. Also I like the UPA retro style version of the walt Disney commercial for the rambler car.
Wonder what Nash looks like now
This is a car commercial from Disney from the early 50’s
Mickey and minnie has children in the comercial why doesn’t nobody talk about it?
I think those are his nephews Morty and Ferdy.
Who voiced Mickey in this one
Disney sound effects wizard James MacDonald, who was the regular voice for Mickey at this time.
@@diannekelley1508 He also voiced the mice in Cinderella. And I think he voiced Chip & Dale.
Nothing wrong with hating communism, but the art is great and unless the artists were spouting hammer/sickle with pin attached nonsense.
Literally every animated commercial from this decade had this exact same angular style.
0:43 shut up minnie and mickey fan children
0:37 WAIT MICKY HAS CHILDREN
Yup
No those are his nephews
@@sonicfanboy3375Actually, according to a channel, Mickey had children twice. 1932: Mickey’s Nightmare 1955: Nash Commercial
@@CBFFan1Mickey's Nightmare was well...a nightmare. It wasn't real, just dream Mickey had because he's apparently horrified at the idea of children. He's never had kids before, so the young mice here have to Morty and Ferdie, his nephews.
His Nephews, Morty and Ferdie
This art style looks more like UPA than Disney.
It's funny you should mention that. Disney did some UPA inspired cartoons in the 1950s. Notably the shorts with Professor owl
@@ryanhoward3383Still disappointed that they didn’t include Professor Owl in Once Upon a Studio

The "Communist Art Style Letter" is a bit of urban legend. There were other reasons
It's because early tv animation had a very low budget and was very limited
Tom Oreb, genius.
HAHAHA in the part where they say it's easy to park they show a LADY parking it! OMG the 50's had NO CHILL
Nice propaganda movie.
Love this art style so much...
Sounds a lot like parental brainwashing. I mean, how exactly is using intellectual property to promote a product an act of communism? Mickey, an American icon, helping to sell an American car. If anything, it’s an example of Mickey being a sell out, by giving into capitalism. Clearly this was an opinion based on ignorance. Why couldn’t he be more like today’s fans and claim that the new design is destroying his childhood?
I’m dissapointed Walt. I’d never thought you’d succumb. What happened to you? Lucasfilm, Marvel, now fucking FOX?
"More for americans! ". These days that statement would be taken as racist!
I think the word you're looking for is xenophobic
