Hello and welcome! I'm Jon, a guitar player and music producer/engineer working professionally in the UK for 15 years. I create in-depth videos on guitar and studio equipment and recording techniques, mixing tips and overall music production ideas, including getting the best out of what you have available. I'm also a qualified and practicing counsellor/therapist and from time to time we get into aspects of the mental approach to working in music, making music and being creative in general. I love making videos that look and sound great, and I hope you enjoy my channel!
The Big Problem With Using Two Profilers (or modellers). It's Not A Tonex Thing.
Addressing the exciting (to me) topics of phase and biamping, how profiles themselves affect phase as much if not more than any latency, and responding to some outlandish claims of superhuman perception in the comments sections of previous videos...

Getting PAID for ONLINE GUITAR RECORDING SESSIONS - OR: 'How to be vaguely professional'
Recently, I’ve been thinking about getting a new microphone, so I’ve been wandering aimlessly around RUclips. It’s been, what, at least a decade since I last dabbled in recording. Your video instantly transported me back to two very vivid memories: one, the good old days, about twenty years ago, when I thought I was unstoppable with an SM58 and SM57 in my hands; and two, the quarantine days, stuck at home during the pandemic. Honestly, I have to say, the feelings are oddly similar. Like, when your thumb hesitated for a split second between the 3rd fret and the 2nd fret on the 6th string, I thought, “Oh my God, I’ve been there too-I’ve made that exact choice.” So, no matter what other mic I might end up buying, one thing’s for sure: the SM58 is making its way back into my hands. Thanks, man. You’re a master of creating moments.
This song is dope!!! Everyone involved makes it what it is!! Love this!!
great video, thank you for going into detail on it. torn right now as there are some good deals to be had. The Axe I/O One (including Amplitube 5 SE and Tonex SE) for $80usd, or the older Axe I/O (including Amplitube 5 MAX and Tonex MAX) for $350... AT 5 Max and Tonex Max are on sale fo $99 each. Just trying to decide if I would benefit from the older unit or not for $350 all in, or spend a little less and get the ONE + AT5 Max and Tonex Max for $280. What are you thoughts?
BREXIT - the gift that keeps giving.
I've watched several reviews because I'm looking at one of these to offset my tuning circus. I play all over the place, from E standard on my 6 string to Drop F# on my 7 string. But I don't have 10 guitars for all the various tunings. Often I end up playing things in the wrong tuning just for practice because I dont want to do a setup just to learn a couple songs. Also, I want to put my 7 string back in standard (it's set up in F#) so I can switch to a lower gauge string to increase comfort - tendonitis has impacted my playing over the years. I don't record or play live, so the little bit of latency some people mention shouldnt be an issue. I appreciate the no-nonsense review.
Going to need to use two of the same captures in both ToneX One pedals to avoid phasing blunders
I own one. Love it! It’s already smaller than most pedals they could make it a bit bigger and add an xlr.
Different profiles take different times to process, makes perfect sense to me.
My problem is ...when I play.on stage and my singer says that to play the song 2 step.up or.down ...in that time many songs I cant play for.the scale issue ...I want to know is it helpful to.change a.song scale ..like a.keyboard
Super helpful post Jon! Thank you. My Kemper has a bad stomp switch and now I'm thinking about just fucking moving on to some other brand. What happens after I pay $300-$500 for a single stomp switch repair, and then one of the other switches goes bad? I don't even gig with mine, so it's not getting a real workout. Thank you man,
Thanks, Abo.
Good guy. Good advice.
Not even close to what a Kemper can do, or Helix, or Fractal. Love the video, and song.
Your comment about no one in the caring about different tones from the high dollar pedals was accurate. Been telling my friends that for years. Enjoyed the demo!
Man there's not a lot of difference between the 2 sounds. I must be deaf lol
Wow, in ten minutes concise & completely clear for as good as newbie, thx! I wonder if one can pull this off with a directional mike and an omni instead of an 8 pattern (a very round eight as it were ;). I guess it might work since the duplicate / polarity makes it stereo, but maybe the bigger overlap with the cardioid... But I might be completely mistaken since I have the recording knowledge and ezperience of a maggot. What do you think? PS I got Line Audio CM4 (cardioid) and Line Audio OM1 (omni), btw insanely great mikes for acoustic at 10-15%% of the price of a Schoeps, made by a Swedish one man company, recommended by an friend (pro audio engineer), you might be interested. (I also do have a Behringer B-1 that can do 8 but lend it to someone).
The mono mic on it's own sounds better, imo.
Hi Jon, I was thinking about recording stereo AC guitar with two SM57s. Any experience on this? Cheers mate!
Similar to this, I've just picked up a cheap sm57 and looking to stereo mic with my nt1a. Would also be interested in hearing your thoughts on stereo mic combinations.
@@jonnyb6575I tried the SM57 - NT1a combination. Pretty good result for the price mate.
Good jam.
Well, for me the 609 and N1a popped out on a simple Sony headphone
You could technically run the tonex with no cab, and then through wet effects and into a tonex one with no amp (just the cab sim) no?
I’m considering using 2 tonex one pedals to achieve this. Or maybe I’ll use the IR2 for the cab, the IR2 has a useless effects loop as the cab sim and reverb comes before the loop… so dumb.
Quick question bud... how did you have your DXR10 set up with line out to your interface? I have the same setup however I'm getting the hissing noise in the background of my track more noticeable when I stop playing. How did you stop this? it doesn't seem to be coming from the tonex pedal as I put the noise gate on full and it literally did nothing so I'm thinking I've got something setup wrong. My signal chain is Tonex > DXR10 via jack cable > DXR10 into interface via XLR from the "link out" on the back of the DXR10. Great video by the way I think I've watched it about 10x in the past week lol
Nice. Sounds brilliant. How does this (pardon the pun) pan out in mono? Is there some, or all, cancellation of the 2 side panned tracks?
7:55 About not being perfect, since they now announced the update with modulation, reverbs and delays, and being able to actually have them in the FX loop in front of the speaker/microphone instead of after it, that basically makes it perfect right?
The blackbird is like vinyl. It has crackles and warm fuzzy details. The tonex sounds digital. In a perfect world I'd use a blackbird for dirt and the tonex as an amp simulator. Thank you for the video.
Sounded cool man ! reminded me of Leslie west kinda tune he would play ! I did a compare as well with my warm wa-14, and my 4th gen rode nt1 which is more flat than the original, but i found the quality of WA-14 was so much better in terms of sound and in the lows, highs, and mid, big difference but also price is as well !
So to enjoy Tonex you need a lot of other pedals?
There are a bunch of videos on RUclips demonstrating mid side recording of an acoustic guitar but almost NOBODY SAYS ABOUT THE SIGNAL LEANING TO ONE SIDE AS ON THIS VIDEO OF COURSE. WE ARE TALKING ABOUT A HUGE DIFFERENCE OF 5 DB OR EVEN MORE!! SO WHY??? why don't you mention that?? Why don't you say that you have put the mics on the wrong position and the signal wont be balanced.. solution is that you have to put the mics below the sound hole almost in the middle of the guitar body. PLEASE nexr time be more descriptive it is a pity such a great video to contribute to obscurity. Cheers
@@DrDTsoukas why don’t you go and make the video you want?
It needs an FX loop. It also needs a better noise gate/suppressor. It's a great pedal, but hopefully they'll be building an even better version within the next few years
Awesome as always...Big applause to this video from Korea. BTW, would you do comparison Blackbird and UA Enigmatic 82 recently released on the market with regards to Dumble tones?..
03:51, 06:50 Is that some sort of Tourette ? :/ no offense, but it's triggering me so damn hard i can't resist to type this :D

I just bought another tonex and it took awhile to find a dual iso line DI box with phase inverter w/o spending another $350 for a radial box! I found a ART dualZ stereo iso line box w/phase inverter switch from Sweetwater for $55! TG 🙏 ive got to much in this thing already with a HX stomp for midi and fx routing, plus a expression pedal and poly tuner & Choks PS, patch cable kit and building my own pedalboard and case. Its just$$$$!!!!😳 Yea I'm going all in bro, Im moving in stereo! Great video I'm going to build a dual Tonex board to gig with.thanks for the heads up on the phase issues.
Thankyou. You answered my question early on about where to put it in the chain 👍. Great vid by the way. Thanks
I’m running this to replace the amp block in my multi effect, as long as you run the TONEX as a DI capture you can put delays and effects after it with a cab ir box and it’s perfect :)
I just bought a big ToneX and was thinking to get a small one exactly for this but I'm not sure how the wiring would go.
Bypass possible or more like possible on and off in a chain?
Great channel. Very well presented and love your whole presentation style. A breath of fresh air from clickbait titles and people screaming into the mic. Nice job!
Great video!🎉
Great way of working. I just wonder about flipping the pans for the plectrum noise. The tracks are exact copies, so that shouldn’t change anything. Correct me if I’m wrong.
If they were exactly the same, there would be no phase different to hear, and no stereo field!
@@JonWrightMusicTV But if you copy a mono track, which the figure of 8 is, everything is in the middle. So swapping it keeps it in the middle. Only the cardioid track panning slightly to the left, might put the plectrum noise in the right place. Or does the figure of 8 track turns into a stereo track by copying it and reverse the phase on one channel?
@@jeroenjanssen5162 The latter, more or less. If you're in doubt, try it and see!
@@JonWrightMusicTV I intend to. Have to buy another mic first. But thanks! Great video!
What are the advantages of stereo if it's going to be a pain in the neck? The greatest guitar players were recorded in mono.
Advantages: massive improvement in feel is possible when using IEMS, exciting FOH sound potential, opens up big creative opportunities in recordings, headphone practice in stereo is SO much more enjoyable. How much of a pain it is depends on the rig and what you're trying to do. A hundred multi fx units are stereo for a reason, and the fact that many famous guitar tracks were recorded in mono has nothing to do with any of it.
@@JonWrightMusicTV I think a mono mix sits better in a track for guitar. The kick, snare, and overheads are mostly mono, bass guitar is mono. Most FOH are mono, in 50 plus years I've yet to have a FOH full stereo on the stage. I think that would open you up to last-minute problems on the stage. The fact that you have the option to do it at home, doesn't necessarily transfer to optimal live applications.
I got one yesterday, still getting to know it, but it sounds great. It's actually the first affordable piece of modeling gear that I think is going to stay, rather than sold after a couple of weeks of trying to make it sound at least decent.
IRs are absolutely gamechanging moment..maybe they iron-out the xmode output level with a new firmware or something..very cool vid
Thanks for making this video amigo! You’ve got a really nice conversation style… I like microphone shootouts anyways…. Yesterday I purchased a Rode NT1 … should be arriving today… Can’t wait to give that a listen… spent the extra quid because on a few Mic shootouts It sounds better than the NT1A to me… cheers
FX loops only exist in your real amps because you can't place a delay after your speaker cab.
what pre amp your using? for the pics
Great video! The newer sE 8 small diaphragm condensers are fantastic!
hi. its direct captures profile or not? I have 3w power amp and real cabinet. where I can find Engl Savage mk1 and mk2 direct profiles for Tonex? thanks
It only has mono in but stereo out What a damn joke. Hillarious. Dealbreaket
Hi! Great video! the only thing I would clarify is that the brain in general, recognices a sound from another from 20ms on... So 20ms would be the longest of latency you could have without it being noticeable. Im sure that it might exceed 20ms in some cases without causing trouble, I just wanted to clarify that in case. Im thinking on getting the Tonex one to capture tone made in the box and really the more I found out about this pedal the more compelled I am to buy one. Thanks again!
