This video is very helpful for those including myself who needs to change out the worn out gear with a fresh new one from Northwest Short Line. I just ordered mine. And the socket screwdrivers. And even though the plastic gear on mine hasn’t worn out yet, I don’t trust it. Replacing that garbage plastic gear with this one will ensure it to remain keyed to the drive gears. And it won’t wear out.
Good idea! Do you have, or can you get, the NWSL part number for the metal gear? If so, please post it here. Thanks.
I purchased the same gear you had.
I work for Amtrak now. This is just beautiful footage. Well done. Wish it was easier for buffs and family and friends to ride in the head end these days; but it’s not allowed anymore :/
Good video, like!!!!!
JUST BRILLIANT WORK !!---MUCH APPRECIATED !!
👍
In the RC hobby we often use battery eliminator circuits (BECs) to increase the voltage from the radio receiver. For example a typical RC receiver outputs 4.8v. A high speed servo may require 6v or more so in this case we could use a BEC to increase the receiver’s 4.8v to 6v or more. It’s more convenient than using a separate battery with a higher voltage for certain accessories.
Hey Steve. Are yo still a member of SDSONS? I would like to join again but don't have any other contact info
Hi Vernon, Sorry have had no contact with the SDSONS for several years. I think they have a FaceBook presence.
@@Steve2223 thanks. I was there a couple weekends ago and didn't see anyone around but a train was running. So you still have operating sessions at your house?
Yes, third Saturday of the month. Send me your email address and I will put you on the invitation list. My email is sseiden@att.net
Looking Great Steve
Any idea what was wrong with the old motor?
It was probably an open winding, but don't remember doing much testing on the old motor before I through it away. Anyway, it was dead when voltage was applied directly to it.
@@Steve2223 gotcha! Thanks for a great video! It was very informative! Have a great day sir!
Helped enormously replacing the gear on my 4 4 0. Used a Bachmann gear which came as a D to fit an O, sorted with an angle grinder!!! Thank you for taking the time to video the process, though I did wonder whether I got the valve timing right...
Glad to hear that the video was useful. I think that the valve timing linkage only goes together one way.
Where were you hooking up test power when the loco was on it's back?
Since I had installed a battery and decoder into the tender motor power was routed through the umbilical between the tender and the loco. I just inserted power from a variable bench power supply to the motor connections in the umbilical connector.
Привет! Отлично 👍🤝
I hove a noisy motor in my piko blue commet... may need to do this
Very nice info video on the climax. Could you tell what model climax arr dcc ready? Thanks
I am not aware of any Bachmann Climaxes that are just "DCC ready." That is, where the motor is already isolated from the electrical pickup. As far as I know Bachmann went from the bare bones model, with little internal wiring, to the DCC installed model. I bought the loco in the video on eBay 2-3 years ago where the seller specified that it was new and had factory installed DCC. To my knowledge there were no markings on the loco indicating that DCC was installed or that it was "DCC ready."
Love the Mogul as usual too!
Awesome installation video indeed!
This is beyond very cool!
Cool show lots of interesting things there those steam waggons look neat cheers
Another awesome video Steve!!!
Steve. You always make it look so simple!!!
It's all in the editing of the video!
I can't tell you how many of these gears I've replaced with both either the North Western Shortline Gears or the Metal Foster Bronze Gears from the new generation Mogul. LOL!!! But I agree, it's tedious, and you go through a great deal of yelling and cursing. LOL!!!!
Do you know if it's the same gear for the old big haulers? I've got 2 Emmet Kelly Jr sets and both have split gears, I glued one of them and it worked for awhile but not eventually broke again
wow Bachmann really makes it easy to convert to battery power. Unlike with the vintage trains by New Bright, Echo, Eztec/ Scientific Toys. (since they use 4 or 6 C cells, that's 9 volts and 6 volts).
I wonder how over engineered New Brights engines are. since I'm going to be heavily upgrading the engine for the Gold Rush express train set.
Big WooooW Steve!!!,... Simply Amazing''..... Masterful work like all the others done by you '',.... thank you very much!!!,...
How did you get the wires to hook the blue rail trains borde to the train from the inside?
I am not sure I understand your question. At 7:24 you will see the two BlueRailDCC board DCC out wires connected to the Bachmann BATT terminals. That connection remains. The BRDCC board remains in the fuel bunker. There is no need to add any other wires.
As a veteran lgb service tech. You where real close on disassembling the boiler. Once the headlamp screw is removed. The railing and headlamp can be slid out and the boiler separates from the cab with no trouble. Also, every mogul had 5 volt headlamps incandescent. Good tip though with using a meter to troubleshoot if an led is present. Lastly, if you are having intermittent problems with the tender tether (umbilical as you described) the wires break off in the 6 pin connector. Very easy to cut the wires, pry apart the connector and redo the connection. Common problem after years of abuse. Nice job
Thanks for the comment and tips. Will use them on the next Mogul install coming up.
Did a similar thing in Summer 2020. Took all old circuit boards out. Engine is originally from about 1991. Specs Soundtraxx Tsunami2 TSU-4400 (4 amps) AirWire Convertr C60 (6 amps) 16.8V NiMH battery, drop-in LED headlights
Thinking alike. Why NiMH vs. Li-on?
@@Steve2223 kinda long story there but we are already setup with NiMH
Oh wow. The railroad looks great!!! Nice job on the viaduct and kitbashed diesel!
Glad you enjoyed it
I should have mentioned in the video that the batteries are Tenergy 2600mAh li-on.
Another excellent video!!!!
Wow! Just learned there is an alternative to a normal speaker.
Awesome video. Very informative and you make the process look so easy!!!
All you have to do is edit out the hard parts!
Nice you tube thank you for Sharing
Isnt the metal gear going to chew up the plastic gear?
No, actually plastic/nylon gears and metal/brass mesh well are very compatible and are used extensively in models. The many problem with with the Bachmann plastic gears is that they get brittle and crack or split and no longer have a tight gripe on the shaft on which they are mounted. Sometimes they are they are not mounted correctly during assembly and crack/split prematurely.
Thank you so much for this. I never could find the forum discussion about this, and this is a tremendous help! One tip: if you need to replace any of the gears in the box, they are available in the section for 2-8-0’s. I don’t know why they are not listed anywhere else (perhaps do that they can sell more motor/gearbox assemblies), but that’s where they are, and nowhere else.
👍
Wow that was a nice Ceremony
Steve I shared your RR with a Steve who lives in Virginia outside of DC Who I met when I bought some Semaphores on eBay from him..

Very interesting video! That is a great looking locomotive. Could you provide more specific information on the cooling fans?
They are 25mm x 7mm 12V 2Pin DC Ventilation Exhaust Cooling Fan bought on Amazon. Two for $10. I debated as to whether they are actually needed. Bachmann only included a cooling fan on the locos with built-in DCC. I doubt that fan cooling is actually needed, but included it to be on the safe side.
I’m on the AirWire system. I use the Convertr which wires directly into decoders. Many who have gotten the B’mann locos with DCC have removed all original electronics as things can be a tight squeeze. It’s definitely interesting how many electronics come with this locomotive.
Thanks for the great install demonstration. I don’t use MTH currently but I think your install is very useful for any deadrail conversion. I guess I don’t understand the ‘large capacitors’, does MTH DCS have a built in anti stall device for dirty track issues? Here from the BlueRail group.
I am not sure but I believe the capacitors are primarily there to power the sound system when running on DC power and track voltage is lower than that needed for the sound. They may also help run on dirty track.

You mentioned locos are setup as master-slave. What exactly does that mean? How are they wired together or are they DCC master-slave? Are both locos redone the same way? Where did you put the speaker?
Only one unit contains the decoder. MTH calls it Proto-Sound 3.0. The command protocol for this is proprietary but it can also operate in DCC mode. It also has the sound file, amplifier, and speaker (in the fuel tank). All this makes it the master unit. It sends info and commands via an umbilical to the other unit to control its motors, lights, smoke unit, etc. This makes it the slave unit. It does not have a sound system. It cannot operate independently. Of course, with the addition of battery and the Tam Valley receiver, the master cannot operate without the slave.
Thanks for sharing. Great video of an awesome trip!
Great Pics of a Great Tour...Thanks for posting Steve. Doug Obert
I liked the debugging part....good poop.
Glad you liked the video!
Thanks....quite informative.
Really a great line!! Where did you get those layered rocks. They are fantastic!
They are called Canyon Rock, supposedly from the Sonoma AZ area. We bought them in 1992 from KRC Rock, a landscaping rock company in San Diego
Are you running a blue rail Bluetooth board?
Yes, it's a great product. Works well. Have also installed it on other engines.
Steve Seidensticker Do you know if they'll work in a sd70
Sorry this replay is late. Just saw your question. Yes, the board will work in an SD70, but it has a current limiter that shuts down the loco if the current draws more than 1.2 amps for more than a few seconds. I get by with it on 4-axle locos pulling up to 15 cars or so. The SD70 is 6-axle and I suspect draws more current.
Very nice!
