Island Crossing Expedition, Inishmore, Kayak Fishing Sailing, Ireland (Hobie Adventure Island 2015)
My first Expedition with the Kayak. (43km total distance)
Been a dream for a long time to embark on a journey and cook some freshly caught fish on an Island.
Well I finally did it and I LIKED it.
Journey from Lettermore, Trabane to
Aran islands, Inishmore, Portmurvy Beach
Everything went well including most of the weather, wind direction was almost perfect for the trip.
Definitely more of this to come. The reach of this fantastic Kayak makes it so versatile.
I am thinking Skellig Islands next?

    curious if a 6 foot rockpool community with 5 bearded rockling, longspined sea scorpion, corkwing wrasse, sand goby, rock goby, shannies, montagues blenny, some juvenile mullet and others would work

    • @mariusaquaticus3102
      @mariusaquaticus3102 2 года назад

      That would be very interesting but to be honest it sounds more like a gladiator fighting pit 😅 Especially sea scorpion, shannies and blennies are voracious predators. Also seen a Gobie pull out a hermit crab from its shell. They will certainly devastate anything smaller than them but I would assume they are okay with each other if similar size. It would be a very different ecosystem like mine. I tried to keep a balance and very minimal predators (they usually went back after a few weeks) I like when small things show up as hitchhikers etc and thrive. That obviously wont work in such a predator tank. I actually had a predator tank at some stage in another tank with Velvet crab, sea scorpion and Montagues Blenny. But like I said its very different you cannot have a "cleanup crew" or at least not for more than one night 😅 So it becomes hard to manage and you need a very beefy filter, its cool as those predators are also very interesting to watch but its more a species tank for the predators rather than an idyllic rockpool ecosystem if that makes sense. Of course it depends highly on the size of the tank and amount of hiding spaces etc. 6 foot sounds big but all depends on depth and height and structures inside. Sorry for the long non-answer 😅 hope it helps make a decision. If your goal is to have those predators then I would say go with either a full ecosystem with cleanup crew etc and then add predators slowly once its established a bit and see how it goes. Or go with a predator fighting pit from the beginning and know you wont be able to sustain much else than the predators, but its very fun to watch them feed 😅 Also some others i didnt mention from your question. - 5 beared rockling is cool but might not be very active during the day/light, will get fairly big, might be hard to feed, unless you feed at night - Corkwing is super cool to watch, should be safe enough from the other pedators, i had one most of the time in my tank you should see it in some of the videos. Very active and very interesting to watch them. (I think this is be species I would advise the most to keep) - Mullet should be alright as they are swimming in the water column, will probably get eaten by the sea scorpion though unless they are larger than its mouth or stomach rather

    I feel like the Marine side of the hobby is lagging behind the Freshwater side. People are constantly pushing the envelope in Freshwater, with blackwater, Biotopes, coldwater, new aquascaping styles, new materials, no filter, hell even self-sustaining tanks which you don't have to feed. But when it comes to saltwater, all I see is mostly same-looking reefs, all built the same, with the same color lighting, and almost none of it is remotely natural looking. All in all, saltwater has so much potential, but it never seems to get utilized.

    Seeing what you can pick up in the sea with just some rocks from the beach makes the whole fuss about nano shrimps really pointless. And this is real nature... Thanks for the great video! Unfortunately in the common saltwater tanks these fragile organisms don't survive in transported life rock or even if, they would become food for 'the real stars' of reef tanks... What a pity! I hope nano tanks will become more common in the saltwater hobby, too...

    Can you sail upwind

    • @mariusaquaticus3102
      @mariusaquaticus3102 5 лет назад

      Yes you can. Thats why its so far superior to 99% of other kayak sail out there. It actually tacks upwind even better than my Hobie Adventure Island. Especially with the Genoa Jib in the front. If you are getting a kayaksailor make sure you spend the extra on the Genoa Jib it is critical for upwinding. Happy Sailing

    I guess that answered my question as to how well corkwings live in a tank, great video

    Great choice of music, reminds me a bit of whale songs. It's brilliant for aquatic editing. Great tank, if you ever struggle with algues do consider shadow simulators, only thing the UK gets is a fair bit of rain and naturally coulda come with it and all of our aquatic plants are accustomed to these constantly varying light levels which is why a lot of plant life dies off in tanks it's due to unbroken sunlight burning the cells that photosynthsise. Your tank is gorgeous, I can't wait to move into my new place next week so I can get a tank and start to build it up, I was wondering if you'd had any small wrasse like corkwings and if so how they behave in the tank with shellfish because I'll have the opportunity to keep so really pretty wrasse but it they're nothing but reef and shellfish killers I'll just stick with mullet, bass, gobies etc. I'll be setting my tank up with fish and shellfish native to Llandudno North Wales, so things like sand eels, pollock, bass, hermit crabs turbo snails, shrimps etc. Seeing amazing setups like yours really make me want my own to sit and watch in the winter when the weather is too grim to be out in. Great tank and please whenever you get the time to throw the camera on it please do more videos so I and everyone else can see how everything is developing. Cheers (Dan)

    How do you catch a fish like that?!

    • @mariusaquaticus3102
      @mariusaquaticus3102 5 лет назад

      Sorry missed your comment. We caught it while netting sandeel on the beach with a 5m Seine type net. lower part of the net attached to our feet and upper part on our hands as we drag it over the sand in about 1.3m of water. It was pure luck we got this fella on the shore but I was told its fairly common for smaller ones to be so close to shore.

      Sorry missed your comment, better late than never its a 15spined stickleback. Very hard to feed. Only fed well on live mysis shrimp.

      @@mariusaquaticus3102 Gammurus work well too, quite easy to collect on a low tide, fucus serratus over sand, lift it and they'll all be one the sand, use a net to seperate them form the sand in water.

      @@seatrust4102 yes good idea. Very easy to catch also under rocks so you dont even need to get wet ;-)

    I see you have the bigger 1.6m sail (it has three panels). The smaller 1.4 mainsail might be a better option in those winds, and the addition of the relatively inexpensive Jib might have balanced the tendency to lee helm. Nice trip and the rig looks good.

    • @mariusaquaticus3102
      @mariusaquaticus3102 6 лет назад

      Thanks, in terms of sail l find bigger is always better if you need it for low finds. If the winds are too high you can reef half the mainsail. It doesnt furl like a Hobie but you can reef the bottom square section of the mainsail. I find the extra jib (genoa) EXTREMELY helpful for tighter upwinding. I have the Hobie Adventure Island now and it cannot go as tight into the wind as the KayakSailor did due to no jib. Checkout my channel for much newer videos with the Hobie ;-)

      Hej Daniel, yes unfortunately for the hermit the eggs where released alright but not exactly "safely" ;-) But at least all the gobies had a good meal. I have never seen a single baby hermit but that was expected, you would really need to keep the larvae in a separate tank to grow them out.

    Hi Marius, I want to start something like this, can you give me information. Is this a heated tank? are these wild fish?

    • @mariusaquaticus3102
      @mariusaquaticus3102 6 лет назад

      Hi Andrew, great to hear. No this is a non heated but chilled tank mimicking the local seatemperatures here in ireland. All animals and plants sand and rocks are wild caught by myself (which is half the fun) here on our coastline in the rockpools/tidepools that are left behind when the tide is low. I would really suggest you go to my blog and have a look around as I have documented my journey there. Take note to the page called technical setup to give you an idea of how I did it. It really depends where you are based, access to the sea and what you want to keep. Feel free to ask me for advice here or through the blog, I would love to help, its a great hobby :-) www.irishrockpoolaquarium.com
