Klementi Art +Craft

Добавлен 15 окт 2011
My name is Kristjan Klementi. I live in Estonia, a small country at the shores of Baltic Sea.
I'm a self-taught potter, or perhaps as I like to say - a maker.
I started with ceramics in summer 2018 when I rented a potter's wheel for the summer holidays. Later 2019 summer I got my own wheel and own kiln by the end of the year. When Covid started I made my home studio in my garage where I've made countless of pots ever since. Making pots - this is where I store energy, and this is where I draw it from.
Opening this channel with a hope to share the background and progress videos, as well how-to's of what I have learned in making pottery.
I hope you enjoy!

Probably the biggest bowl I've made so far. Throwing a bigger bowl from 6 kg of clay.
Our dare friend asked for a bowl to prepare the bread dough and this turned to be probably the biggest bowl I have made so far. The things I commonly make are usually much smaller so I kept the camera rolling during making and got around 2 hours of video footage that I cut into this video.
I hope you enjoy watching this video and I appreciate if you leave me some comments when you have watched till the end.

Making the lidded jar from black stoneware and white sodium silicate torn texture. The whole process
Просмотров 2,7 тыс.8 месяцев назад
Its probably long and most boring pottery video that you have found over a long time. You mostly see quick making processes with lots of happy explanations how to do and what to do and so on. This video has just the noise of making, and no explanations and music. Less words - more clay. I hope it gives you some puzzling what I do, but if you are familiar with potery, then you can probably guess...
Throwing and trimming a medium size serving bowl from sandy looking stoneware.
Просмотров 26110 месяцев назад
I wanted to try something different and see how it looks from above as I throw a bowl. It's a bit of a strange perspective. Since I don't glaze the outside of my pieces, I make sure the clay is smooth and pleasant to touch. I use different tools like a spoon, a metal rib, a stone, or a stick to polish the clay surface. After firing, I rub it with a very fine sanding pad to make it silky smooth....
Throwing a tea caddy from one lump of clay
Просмотров 45310 месяцев назад
I have a unique opportunity to participate in wood firing of Tohisoo Anagama (Kohila County, Estonia) kiln once in a year. This tea caddy was one of my works that was fired there during spring 2023. It's absolutely stunning how flames and ashes decorate the ware in the kiln. I deliberately left the outside unglazed to give the flames the opportunities to paint it. The result is always unpredict...
Throwing and trimming a wider and shallow lidded jar (ASMR, no text and voiceover)
Просмотров 82811 месяцев назад
Whenever I throw something on the potter’s wheel and it does not have a lid, I feel there is something missing. Constructing the body and the lid in a way that they fit perfectly is a pleasure to make. In this video I show the process of throwing and trimming of the body and the lid. And then also fluting the edges and the lid. I'm using a black firing Spanish stoneware. It really feels like wo...
Making of a teapot - from start to finish (ASMR, with just the subtle sound of making)
Просмотров 492Год назад
Making a teapot is said to be the mother of all challenges. I admit it's tough, but it's also the most rewarding challenge of them all. When you make a teapot, you're focusing on functionality and technical skills. It's all about function and purpose first, and then aesthetics come after. It's so satisfying to take on the teapot challenge every once in a while to get your focus right and sharpe...
Making of a simple vase with snowflake glaze - my gift to my Mom
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.Год назад
Hi. When the world celebrates International Women’s Day then for our family it is a very special day. It’s my mom’s birthday and this year she turned 89. This vase I made specially for her. She has been admiring my work with ceramics since I started 5 years ago. She even has once took out a vase from my scrap bucket and said that this is the most beautiful vase I’ve made, how can I throw it awa...
Making a ceramic treasure box with snowflake crackle glaze (ASMR, no text and voiceover)
Просмотров 14 тыс.Год назад
Developing and working with a snowflake crackle glaze (or ice crackle glaze) has been my obsession for years. It was my very first glaze I mixed myself and I have run numerous glaze tests with variations in glaze recipe and with various clay bodies to find a working formula - but the result is worth it. Every time I open the kiln, it’s like ‘wow’ again. The shallow lidded treasure box is one of...
Throwing and altering a ceramic tulip vase (asmr, no text and voiceover)
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.Год назад
Tell me if the videos wihout text and voiceover are good to watch or do you expect some talking and explanations of the work as well ? Commonly I am not altering the forms very often, so I am rocky in this still. Just felt a need to make a bit different vase than a common round one. Spring is coming and soon there are lots of tulips and other flowers that need a wider vase with a wider opening....
POTTERY TIP: Brushing glaze using a spinning potter’s wheel (ASMR, no text, no voice over)
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.Год назад
Here in this video, you see a quick tip how to brush glazes on your ceramics quickly and efficiently. Video has no text and voiceover, just studio noise. I use potter’s wheel to spin the bowl, a cheap slip trailer to feed the brush with glaze and a fan brush to give an even finish. I don’t have enough space for huge buckets of glazes to dip in and I often glaze inside and outside with different...
Making a ceramic cup - from start to finish (ASMR, no text and voice over, just studio noise)
Просмотров 2,3 тыс.Год назад
There is no one way for making a ceramic stoneware cup and as much as there are makers everyone is doing it differently. Here’s a full 16-minute video of my process. No text and audio - just studio noise and occasional deep breaths. The total time spent on a cup is probably an hour or so. Starts with throwing the body, then making the handles, trimming the body, assembly of handles, glazing and...
Final tuning of a lidded jar - how to make the lid fit smoothly on fired ceramic jars.
Просмотров 939Год назад
How to make the lids fit smoothly on the jar on fired ceramic vessel? How to tune your handmade lidded pots or jars so that the lid and the body sing together? I often say that lid and the body of a ceramic jar need to sing together. Every lid as its own tone what they make. Even when making the rim as smooth as possible, after firing, the lid still makes some scratchy noise when put on the jar...

Where's the final result ! Glazed & fired ?
Great video!
How much clay was that?
It was so long ago that I don't remember. But guessing of it's size then perhaps around half a kilo or so.
whats the tool to make the shattering marks? a piece of brass? thanks
Hi. Yes, it's made from a brass rod that I got from local hardware store. I bent it and sharpened the tip. It has nice flex and easy to sharpen.
I am glad you will be adding more
Great technique.
Que maestría , perfecto, enhorabuena desde España Valencia
How do you begin i want to learn. But i want to learn from someone like you
I’m flattered. How can I teach you? I’m on the other side of the globe. But best teacher is doing, just sit behind the wheel and start doing - you’ll learn from every piece you make. Start from simple and small forms, then go bigger and more complicated when the simple ones feel comfortable. I wish you good luck and may your hands be filled with clay and your heart with imagination.
@@klementi-art then you my friend I just got a block of earthenware clay and I'm going to begin with coil bowls. I would just like to learn from an expert since it would help allot more. And everyone has their style and your pottery had a certain look that I like . Thank you for the videos. As I cannot train with you I will be looking at your videos allot . Thank you for showing me your art my friend
🙀🙈😹
I love how you use the spoon as a pottery tool!
the spoon :) it's for sure a handy small multifunctional pottery tool, especially good for burnishing.
Beautiful.
Beautiful jars. Like to see more of them.
I'm glad you like them. There are more to come soon. :)
thanks so much
Very nice bowl.
What clay are you using? it is very groggy. Nice piece
Hi, and thanks. I use Spanish black stoneware ( PRNI from SIO2). It has really nice colour and surface. And yes, 40% of grogg. They make it with different grogg size, the one I use has very fine grog that is barely noticeable.
@@klementi-art thank you 🙏
Прелестно!!!!
Nicely done! I am curious about the sheet of paper you placed on top of the jar after throwing. Is this to keep the lip from going out of round?
Thank you. You are right. Paper sticks to fresh clay and keeps the lip in form. The clay was so soft I was afraid it will distort when I lift it, even I use bats. Once starting to dry, the paper comes off easily.
Hi…thank you for this. Do you add a glazing medium such as cmc gum to the glaze you mix? If you have time, please reply
Hi. It depends of the chemistry, but commonly I don't. I do however usually add fiew drops of epsom salt (saturated solution of MgSO4), it helps to improve the viscosity of the glaze and the glazes don't settle so easily.
What a wonderful idea!
What brand of glaze did you use?
Hi. Its called Ice crackle glaze. I have mixed together myself from raw materials.
Qual esmalte?
Beautiful work!
Ficou lindo!!!💖💖💖
Beautiful
The pot you made is not what you advertised! is there a reason for thins?
Interesting how did you get into that conclusion?
@@klementi-art the picture displayed was not the pot that you made. The [picture displayed was a small lidded blue pot
Très bon et, beau travail .
excellent piece and I love your technique yes I bet you've made quite a few of these as you do it with such ease. what is clay you use? Never thought of this for tea thank you again Patricia
True, all things with a lids are my favourites to make. I like them because they always give some sort of a challenge. The small ones are good to throw closed form from one piece, but the wider it gets, the more complicated it is. The clay is red firing stoneware clay. / sorry I missed your comment earlier. All the best to you and thank for your kind words.
Beautiful.
What clay body is this? It looks like white stoneware when you are throwing it, but the finished color is that of red or chocolate clay body.
Hi Sara. It's and anthracite black stoneware that I use. I actually wedge two different clays together to have nice fit with this glaze I use.
I'm starting to throw vases and this was a beautiful, beautiful watch! Congratulations on the piece and the process <3 I hope one day i can be this skillful!
Thank you for your kind words. I remember so well the feeling when I first started to throw, It was so exciting. The skills will come with patience and persistence. Good luck to you !
Väga ilus! Lugupidamisega.
Aitäh Igor !
Waw
What is the glaze formula please
Hi. For some understandable reasons I can not discluse the exact formula of mine. However if you are interested in this glaze you can search glazy.org database for snowflake or icecrackle glazes, there are many formulas to start with.
Can I use grit instead of silicon carbide?
You sure can try. Silicon carbide is quite a strong abrasive that leaves a very smooth surface, and it's easy to work with and also easy to clean after.
Lovely! No chatter, no music, just great work. Thanks so much for sharing. I would love to see the glazed product once you reach the “finish line”. 😂
Thank you, I'm glad you like. The vase is waiting a good moment to re-fire it, as the first firing it was not evenly glazed :( but you can imagine it in pure white glaze.
What size grit of the silicon carbide do you use?
I use 220 grit
Are you selling these?
Kathly, not yet. I'm working on a better design of it, this one turned out too clumsy.
What a perfect break!!
Beautiful. It was amazing to see how skillful you are. I just got a wheel. Haven't thrown anything yet.
Thank you! its interesting to start something new, dont worry about your skills, they will come when you do, and faster than you can imagine. I must have a video somewhere of my first time behind the wheel, its funny, I had no idea what to do and how to do. I just sat behind the wheel and took a ball of clay, Then as nothing came out, I started to search how to throw ;)
Wow it's incredibly gorgeous. I'm a new Potter, a hand builder and I admire your skill..I can't imagine achieving that level of expertise. I am so new in fact, that I just glazed my first load of stoneware and haven't fired it yet. It will be a first experience for me.
Its a very interesting path you have in front of you. A lot of joy. Potters are most happy people you know - there is so much joy and happiness after every firing and the joy of making something with your hands even when you dont know eactly how it will turn out from firing. I still remember the first pots I made some 5 years ago. Skills come with every piece you make, dont worry, just do.
@Klementi Art +Craft Thank you. Yours are the first words of Potters wisdom I've received. I will remember them!
How many pounds of clay for each piece?
Hi. If I remember right then the body was 2 and lid 1,5. throwing the lids I leave the bottom quite thick so I could have enaough clay to cut out the knob when trimming.
Just perfection. I'd love to be able to do that. What kind of clay is that? I have a Black clay 266, and it's red when greenware.
Thank you Judy. The clay I mix and wedge from 2 different clay bodies. I have no experience with 266.It seems to to fire to quite interesting colour. Seems to be quite similar to one black clay I have tested, but that one did not work with several glazes. German made Goerg & Schneider 373 and 371 are quite similar to my mix but slightly lighter grey.
This glaze is beyond beautiful 😮
Ouch, sand in your teeth 😂 The final result is much better!!
I LOVE these videos!! I love ALL the videos!! I’ll take whatever you prefer at the time-just keep making them!! What a beautiful vase- the use of a teaspoon is fun to watch too 🙂
I'm so glad you like them all :) Those comments give me strenth to continu making them.
I only found your channel tonight and I have to say-I love it!! What a wonderful gift you have and I’m so glad you’re sharing it with us!! Loved seeing your smiling face at the kiln reveal. Thank you 🥰
Thank you so much! Your kind words bring a tear to the corner of my eye.
Omg this is stunning! I thoroughly enjoyed watching the whole process-how wonderful 🙂
I'm so glad!
