Very well done! And a great looking medal for sure. Glad the weather picked up a little bit for everyone. Halfway thru Hotel Avocado by Bob Mortimer
Splendid! Bob Mortimer is excellent 😁
Nice one. Well paced. We concur that Curly's Athletes races are well organised. We've done the Brigg and Woodhall Spa 10Ks this year. Books. Dawn is reading a running book 'Dandelion Growing Wild' , a true story of resilience and hope. I've got two on the go. A biography of the old Yorkshire and England cricketer of the 1930s, Bill Bowes. More highbrow is Empire of Normality, a history of neurodivergence and capitalism.
I'll certainly keep my eye out for more of their events! 10ks are relatively easy to slot in amongst my silly off road daft distance races. I'll confess I'm incredibly bad at reading non-fiction, although Empire and Normality sounds very interesting.
A very nicely executed race there 💪😎 I hadn't heard of Wool. Sounds intriguing. I'm re-reading Robin Hobb's book, "Fool's Quest" and also Brandon Sanderson's "Well of Ascension" at the moment. I tend to have one paperback and one on kindle, for when I'm out and about.
I was pretty happy with it! Silo is a really good watch so far and I found myself wanting to know more about the world. Turning to the books is usually where I end up in these scenarios! The only Brandon Sanderson works I've read so far are the last three books of The Wheel of Time, as he took over writing them after Robert Jordan died. I typically lean much more towards Sci Fi but I will probably look at some of his work when I next need a fantasy kick!
Nice one, bit of Ry Cooder from Paris Texas and one of my favourite films Nic Roegs Perfomance
you're making me come back and rewatch some of these videos because I can't remember what happened in them 😂
@@AMostlyFunctionalJess Never realized they were old videos, they pop up on my YT feeds but enjoy watching all posts around the Peak District. Carry on you!
Ramsden Clough at the start of your hike is a great route and very scenic and for some reason never many folk up there which is always a bonus!
Aye, lots of quiet routes up that way! Often have adventures up there where I either see nobody or at most a couple people off in the distance.
You can't control everything but all the preparations you do must surely help on the day. I can't get my head around the distances you talk about. I don't run much so that's part of it and my max trekking distance is around the 20 miles. Thank you again for your vlog here and I will be following along with your updates. Cheers, Warren :)
Thanks Warren! Yes the distances do often sound a bit daft, I enjoy the mental challenge of going that far, I think that's the main draw for me.
A thumbs up running past is enough. If you need help then say it, job done
Nothing will go wrong on race day! Just enjoy the lead up and overall enjoy it while you do the race. ENJOY!
Unfortunately, past experience suggests otherwise 🤣 But yes, revelling in the whole process is the goal.
Thanks for explaining those changes you're making, Jess. I think some of my thoughts were along the same lines but you explained it better than my little brain did. Looking at the training as just happening to have a race at the end should take that big pressure off race day.
I think it'll be a huge change. There's just no use in loading tons of pressure onto one race. At the end of the day it is just a race. If it doesn't play out well, I move onto the next one!
The Haworth Hobble looks great.. I signed up for 10 Res's after watching your videos but sprained my ankle a few weeks ago thanks to a broken stile 👎... Hope your training goes well and looking forward to seeing your progress 🙂
Oof, hope the recovery on the ankle is speedy!
I've had a pair of these for about 4 years now I think and they've held up great and are very comfortable. It makes me wonder how other, more expensive brands compare.
I've reviewed a couple of different brands since these, although one (sundried) upped their prices a fair bit after my review. Freet are the other brand I've used a lot. I've had 1000km out of two pairs of their shoes. I have limited experience with Vivobarefoot but the durability on their stuff seemed pretty low, so I never went back to them.
Great route. I've got 125 Trigpoints under the belt now took a long time and Back Tor is deffo in my top three! Love that area
The back tor trig point is a particularly good one!
Looks like the sort of fell race even I would try. Good featuring of the Penistone best there. That's our club.
Unlucky with the ankle twist. Thanks for sharing this one. I'd never heard of it, despite growing up in Bakewell. Not sure what the replacement for 'Are you ok? ' could be. The first thing that sprang to mind was that lad off The Simpsons, who just points and goes HAHA! 😅 Might need a bit more thought...
lmao! I think I'd probably handle that better than 50 people asking me if I'm ok 🤣
I’m not sure what’s more impressive, 100 pull ups in under an hour or actually building your own pull up bar in your garden 😅 Nice mornings work there. I could do 5 at a push, then 4,3,2 and 1 every 5 minutes. It would take forever. Plus I find an under hand grip so much easier, in fact I don’t think I can do them the way you did. What’s the most you’ve ever done in one go?
I do have many years experience under my belt! I certainly couldn't always bash out 100 pull ups on a random Tuesday haha. Chin ups are definitely easier than pull ups, as the bicep is more engaged, making the movement easier overall. I haven't tried a max reps set of pull ups for a while so I'm actually not sure what I can do right now. In the past I have managed at least ten in one go, although I can't remember if I have ever reached as far as 12. Maybe I'll find a moment this week to see what I can do at my present level of fitness!
Love that area for sure!
It's a beautiful place!
Great effort. Thanks for the video.
An hour is pretty solid , I have been doing similar but with 100 pushups diff variations as I feel and rest period I do bodyweight squats for that minute or two or leg raises and that takes me about 40min to do also. I do think maybe even though these are "for fun" to try focus on tightening your abs and you will feel a bit more power as you pull up and for me at least I find it feels simpler than the sway. Still great work to do it , I hope your recovery went well.
This is a bit of an experiment. I'm playing around with different ideas for weeks where I might not have a good idea ready for a running focused video. I'd like to periodically showcase other things and take on interesting challenges, but videos like this won't occur very often!
I actually really enjoyed this. Off the cuff challenges are fun.
Seeing how many views this has ended up with compared to my usual channel traffic, I think I will put more effort into editing the next one 🤣
I already know how long it would take me to do this challenge....1 eternity 😂😂 Great strength and technique, Jess 👍💪 I can imagine the boredom and impatience setting in towards the end... How was the DOMS?
It did get a bit repetitive 😅 however I think it'd go a lot smoother with the 2 reps per minute strategy so I'll definitely try that next time. I have no DOMs! Bouldering once or twice a week with another strength session that focuses on explosive and heavy pull movements probably helps with my body being ready to randomly do silly shit like this lol
I love how this popped up on my phone as I was sat in the waiting room of the donation centre. Too late for me to heed any advice at the time though I watched the video when I got home and listened to my body next day when it said it didn't fancy the Friday run.
A wise decision. Hope the donation went well!
Good on you for persevering with the donations, and spreading your knowledge. You're no doubt helping people in desperate need 👏👍
Thanks Mark!
Hey great details here Jess. I'm not a runner so that's not a factor, but I'm older! I have recently donated my 78th pint and have rarely had any issues. Summer time I have to really-really make sure that I have had enough water during the day as I do tend to dehydrate in the summer. Also my iron level was too low a few years ago for some reason, but that was a one off. Informative video again, cheers, Warren :)
78 donations is incredible! I've reached my fifth donation credit but just three successful donations out of the ones I've done. I'm hoping that now we've worked out which vein plays ball it should be smooth sailing from now on 🤞
wow i didn't know any of this
I wouldn't have thought to use one of these in place of a race vest. I like that you can bring it around to the front to grab stuff out of it.
I used a race vest for a long while, I just get so sweaty so having some extra breathability seemed worth trying out!
Absolutely brilliant Jess and Harriet!! I just did the one leg last year firbeck to maltby but I gave it a wide berth this year due to injury. But superb from both of you.
It's a lovely race! Did leg one as part of a relay team last year and ran the whole thing back in 2021 as well as this year, getting quite familiar with the route 🤣
We'd like to do this in the future due to the tradition. It looks like a nice countryside loop too.
I enjoyed most of the route a lot. The last 5km is a bit of a drag beccause it's mostly along a busier main road but overall a great course.
Excellent details there Jess. Regarding clothes, I had forgotten until you referenced your clothing gear that you used to use Sundried products a few years ago. I bought a top from them and it has been excellent. I contacted them earlier this year and it seems they don't do trekking tops any more and only do cycling gear. That's a shame as I want a replacement for the top I bought from them. Anyway, your video here is fascinating, especially about the food aspects. I really haven't thought about the importance of carbs and protein and such things. All very interesting. Thank you. And well done, again, for your achievement with the ultra. Cheers, Warren :)
I do still have a couple of bits of Sundried gear! I had quite high hopes for them I think because they're a UK based brand and I wanted to support them, but I did in the end find that a lot of their bags didn't really fit my needs or weren't that well designed, so I dropped my affiliate link with them. They still seem to stock a reasonable range of sweat wicking tops and active shorts outside of their main cycling range so I may revisit them if the current bits of kit I have of theirs ever wear out. It can be easy to forget about the food! It's a huge element in the success of any physical endeavour!
@@AMostlyFunctionalJess Hey yes I think Sundried are a UK firm so good to support. I like my older wicking top and would like to replace it. If you re-link with them please do let me know how you get on with them. Cheers, Warren :)
Great video, Jess. I'll try to apply some of this to the annoying pain I've developed around my left heel recently. Eating plenty and planning a hot bath as we speak! The Topo sound good. I got my first blood blister the other day, running in Hoka Clifton in the rain 😮 Don't want any more of those! Hope your recovery is still going well 👍
That sounds like it's probably some plantar fasciitis! The pain typically manifests the worst in the heel. Heat treatment will do it good and also if you can massage your foot very first thing in the morning massaging across the tissue rather than long it that will help as well. Recovery is still going smoothly. Easing the knee back into running on a nice steadily upwards trajectory!
@@AMostlyFunctionalJess awesome, thanks 👌
Nice to hear how you go about your recovery Jess. I liked your part about protein intake as I know I lack that. Both in training and recovery. I’ve been using an online shop called nutricircle to bulk by protein bars (most are half price boxes) to try and add some extra grams into my diet. I’ve also just ordered my first tub of protein rebel collagen. I want to see if it can play a part in my recovery and stop my legs feeling so heavy all the time (not training heavy, just old lady heavy) Ali Bailey has recommended collagen supplements for woman who are peri-menopausal so I want to give it a whirl. I’m also going to try a bit harder in cutting a bit, not all 😁, of the rubbish out of my diet 🍏
Diet does play a huge role! I typically aim to have all my main meals contain a minimum of 20g protein, but preferably 30g+, then on lifting days and long run days I'll use a protein shake to help boost intake by another 25-30g. Snacks are usually things like yoghurt (soy yoghurt in my case) or a giant bowl of popcorn on the evenings we play D&D haha. It's just a case of striking a balance. I have a horrendously sweet tooth so I try to feed in some sweet stuff regularly otherwise I'll snap and binge a whole pile of rubbish in one go 😬 I just aim to make sure the overall diet is balanced and I'm getting enough micronutrients in as well as the macros!
@@markg99 - sorry I hijacked your thread Mark 🤦🏻♀️ I was reading your comment then instead of starting a new one, I ended up writing mine as a reply to yours…ooops 😁
Well done, you guys smashed it! I feel your pain, after 11 days on the Pennine Way, id heard so many jokes 😂
*makes notes* never do a multiday run with Harriet
So pleased for you on this one Jess. I know some of your trail runs haven’t always gone to plan over the past couple of years but you so did it! Not only was your enjoyment clear but the distance was amazing too. Glad your friendship survived the run 😂 Was it a ‘start when you like’ run? There didn’t seem many runners at the beginning. Cool route too, lots of fun places to pass. Question is, what’s next?
Thank you Rachel ❤ I think I've maybe learned a lot of lessons the hard way since getting into fell and longer distance running. Really I'm still relatively new to it and I think I expected far too much of myself despite my fairly low levels of experience and historic training volume. Now that the training consistency is actually stacking up now it feels like I'm a lot more prepared and more in control. Yes it is effectively a wave start race. When you enter you select the time you want to start your registration, registration takes maybe five minutes and then you set off. The walkers all start really, really early and the runners start a bit later with the really fast beans typically starting from 7am onwards. We started around 7am mostly because we didn't want to get up any earlier 🤣
and to answer 'What's next?', next structured training block starts around mid November so there will be a lil video then to go over the next big goal 😉
@@AMostlyFunctionalJess there’s so much to be learned in the first few years. Every race has its own challenges but put them all together we just get better at knowing how to tackle them. From training to racing. Biggest and best advantage you have is that you live in the perfect area to get the best trails. I’m still learning all the time and even now, with a couple of days left to go, I’m still not even sure what to wear at the start. There’s been big discussions online about footwear and sock choice. It seems lots are going for a waterproof sock choice. One minute I think I’ve made up my mind, the next I’m googling next day delivery on sealskinz 😂 The start of your race sounds very much like an LDWA event. 4am was pretty cruel for those that took that option 😮 Time on Feet did a 50 mile race somewhere in the south a few weeks back. They had a 1pm start and got to run through some of the night. Something like that sounds pretty fun. Not a usual start time for an ultra.
@@AMostlyFunctionalJess - oooh, something for next year…. I wonder what that might be 🙂 I’ve my eye on a run in January, kind of in your direction but a bit further northeast.
Beginning of March is mine, so a full winter of training (again 😅)
Oh wow that's fantastic! Well done you! I just can't imagine how hard that was. Super good - I hope you are feeling really proud! Nice one :) Cheers, Warren
I think our strategy and teamwork made it relatively straightforward to get to the finish. Obviously it was hard but we paced it very sensibly, ate plenty and cued off each other effectively, which led to a very successful day out!
That's just epic. Well done, both. The lame jokes were quite a highlight for me 😅 You made 50 miles seem fairly reasonable. I'd have been crying by Roche Abbey. How was the knee afterwards?
I think being in a pair definitely helped general motivation levels! Knee was tight on Sunday but I had a hot bath after the race, hot bath Sunday, hot bath today and I've been making sure I keep it mobile. Seems to be easing off. Going for a tiny test run tomorrow to assess how everything feels.
congratulations well done. I'd love to do something like that but my sciatica is playing up & very annoying even for my usual runs but i run with it i can't not
Best of luck tomorrow Jess. You’ve got a perfect autumn day for it. Hope the combo of your pace and your friends pace give you the best results. Enjoy the race Jess and look forward to following your tracker 😊
Yes the weather looks great! Should be a good day out.
Yes! 50 miler 😅 that's amazing. I'm still looking at 50k races, with hopes of trying the 75km peak ultra something from Bakewell in a year or so 😁 Fully expecting, and looking forward to, a chaotic race video. They're the best sort! 😄👍 Have a good one. Oh yeah, the Wickerman was closed when we went. Gutted. Was regretting my life choices on the way up to the top of Oblivion... and on the way down 😂
My throat forgot how to scream part way down Oblivion and caught up again at the bottom 🤣

I’ll check your progress Jess 😁
Looked like a great few days out in the fells. I bet that decent off Kirk Fell is a killer on the knees, I’ve only ever gone up it which is bad enough 😂 thanks for sharing
I absolutely wished I'd gone round a bit further and descended via Black Sail pass instead 😅 the Kirk Fell descent is absolutely miserable, particularly on the scree section at the top!
Hi Jess It was good to meet you in langstrath valley near black moss pot. We stayed up on Sargeants crag that night, and it turned out to be another very windy and wet one which made coming down from eagles crag the following day very interesting (as you said it would be).
I did worry about you a bit that morning! Did you manage to descend before the rain got really bad?
We descended in the heavy rain which was interesting….., but more challenging was changing into dry clothes in a phone box next to where we were parked.
Oh noooo haha, I'm glad you got down safely!
Wow you had lots of days in the beautiful Lake District. Love that area, shame it is so far away for me to get to. Stunning views, even in the rain. Thank you for sharing. Cheers :)
Four full days! Not as long as I would perhaps have liked but that was what was easiest to fit in around work. It's about three hours drive for me, depending on which bit of the lakes I'm going to so it's not too bad, but just far enough away that I feel like I have to go up for at least two or three days to make it worth it.
Round Rotherham 50 miler sounds like a good one for the bucket list. Good luck with your sub 13 goal. I usually have so many video ideas that I just know I'll never get around to making half of them 😅 Looking forward to seeing what you've got planned 👍
It'll be good fun! I typically run into issues with the filming process for certain video ideas. Sometimes the faff of setting up shots for how I want the video to look ends up putting me off even starting it 😂 so keeping the upload schedule loose will hopefully means those higher effort videos will be more likely to happen because they'll happen naturally
Mark and Jess…. In the same boat here 😂 I have loads of good ideas and then knock them on the head when I realise the actual film time and organisation is more hassle than it’s worth. Jess, really good to hear the summer’s been positive on the running front. You’ve had a great season. Hope you’ve found a way to keep that enjoyment going 😊
It is a faff isn't it? This whole 'being creative' business 😂 I have definitely learned how to find enjoyment in the process. Previously I was just impatient with myself all the time and upset about not being able to perform 'well', but the consistency is beginning to pay off so I just need to keep at it and keep enjoying myself!
have you tried the freet calver for fells?
I, unfortunately, haven't been able to justify getting a pair yet. Perhaps when one of my other pairs of shoes wears out!
Would you review the freet calver for fell racing?
I definitely thought about it, didn't really have the budget to justify getting a pair yet unfortunately and the summer racing season is coming to a close. Will look at getting a pair over the winter I think.
@AMostlyFunctionalJess Great idea, the 6mm lugs and a stitched sole looks like it would hold up well to the beatings you out the shoes through.
Weldone Jess for doing nearly the whole race. I am like you. Terrible in the heat, even worse than you, I intentionally wouldn't do a long race in the heat specially if there's not much shade on the route. Your decision not to carry on was right. By the way, cool music. What was it?
I'm trying to train myself to handle the heat better and it does seem to be working, just not enough for Sunday! I always put the music I use in the video descriptions. This track is Silent Shout by The Knife.
The trend is definitely upwards. Learning from experiences like this is all going to be a big help, I'm sure. As you asked about races I've gone for a string of road races for the rest of this year. Sacrilege!?😅 5k in Chesterfield on Saturday, then a10k ,HM, and my first ever road marathon later in the year. Gulp!
Indeed, it's all experience in the bank! Road races are really useful training tools! Really good for working on a bit of speed and getting a different training stimulus. Never done a road marathon myself, it's a beast of a challenge to take on. What month is the marathon?
@@AMostlyFunctionalJess right, yes, it should be useful to get some road running in for a while. I've had enough nettles for one summer 😆 I've got my eye on a November marathon, so I've time to train and do the shorter races in the meantime. It's at a race track, I think called Oulton Park 🏎
@@markg99 aahhh yes I've seen that one pop up in race searches. Looks like a good one for a flat course.
Looks really good glad you enjoyed it! 😁
Happy birthday Jess. Looks like the perfect way to spend your weekend. Running, good food and good company 😊
It was a lovely weekend!
Happy birthday for the weekend gone 👍
Good to see you still running Jess and hey still in that water. Lovely spot old mate. All the best. Mark

@@AMostlyFunctionalJess That's good.
