    This same hitachi was our family boombox in the 80s. I was a teenager at the time and I remember I wanted to repair the tape mechanism without my dad knowing, so I had to open up the thingy at night around 11pm and got the mechanism out. unscrewed some screws in it, then it just fell off my hand on the floor.... that was a very very bad and stressful moment in my life 😅 the compensation was how proud I felt when I got it back together that same night (should be 2am or smth) with only pure common sense involved and fair enough with the same issue I had it open for: unlatching Rew or FF button. a broken hook that I wouldn't fix anyway 🤣 btw ... I love your videos 👌🙂 Looking forward to seeing its internals again in a new video!!

      Thanks for watching! I have featured one of these before, but it's always nice to make another video of a unit has different problems. I can only imagine your fright (and subsequent relief!) all those years ago - whilst these are not terribly difficult to work on, they sure are a handful for a comparative youngster at 1am 😂Please keep an eye out, as I'll be filming this one too. Best wishes.

      It's mostly a thick, very rugged plastic. The top plate and microphone /belt locks are metal, and the insides use a sturdy steel cassette mechanism - it's heavy but quite something!

      It's solid and heavier than later models, as it has 2 brass flywheels as part of the anti-rolling mechanism. But still a lot smaller and lighter than the 4440.

    I salute you! I've done a couple of walkmans myself... It's no fun. It's not always easy, and some how it's not really possible to abandon the projects either. The surfacemount ones are the worst! That's true nightmare fuel. But once they're all sorted, people go nuts and throw their money at you to relive the cassette nostalgia they offer. The most insane price I've ever seen for a restored walkman here in norway was 15.000NOK, roughly 1.500£.... That's pretty good when you consider they go for 5£ at a flee market, and parts/labour costs 50 to 100£. They do tend to test your patience though. Probably why some really jack their price a lot after restoring these little devices of pain and agony.

    Depending on how much you paid, lots like this are never a waste of money for people like yourself. At the worst you get to make a RUclips video about them. You'll also have a pile of spare parts. Someone with your expertise is bound to get a bunch of these working. Also those boxed ones should be what you concentrate on, as boxed retro equipment is quite rare and make the best museum/collector pieces.

    • @retro_restos
      @retro_restos 6 дней назад

      Yes, it's nice to share the info about the items from a historical point of view. I don't get paid for my RUclips videos but it's good fun to share the knowledge about different machines. It looks on initial inspection that the boxed ones are newer and actually pretty worthless, but I'm hoping to revive any older, complete ones if I can, as they have the best chance of being wanted/used again.

    • @retro_restos
      @retro_restos 11 дней назад

      The JVC units of this time (like other manufacturers) had a 'family resemblance' much like car companies. This one very much has the feel of the RC250, RC363 etc. I have a penchant for JVC, based off my love for some of the late 1970's models in particular. I've featured many Hitachi, Sanyo, Sharp etc too, but, as a small channel, most of my videos unfortunately disappear into the wind, so I'm currently working through what I have in. More big Sharp GFs and VZ coming though 😁

    • @RoughJustice2k18
      @RoughJustice2k18 11 дней назад

      @@retro_restos Good deal. 👍 Speaking of Sharp, I recently serviced the tape decks in a GF-565Z (rare model made in Japan) - replaced all the belts, rollers and idler tyres - but it looks like I will have to fix the electronics as well now - mainly the REC/PB pre-amp stage since TAPE 2 no longer erases or records tape and there is a "whistle" in normal tape selector mode for that deck which also affects the LED level meter. I suspect several capacitors have gone bad on the board so a possible bulk re-cap may be needed. I shall look forward to seeing future repair/appraisal videos from you. 👍👍😎😎

      Yes, the Sanyo amp chips are highly regarded. Fortunately, costs were generally cut in build quality first, but much of the actual circuitry was kept - so there are some surprisingly nice sounding 'cheap' units out there.

    The turn of the 1970s and 1980s was the time when the best and super good boomboxes were constructed. From the mid-1980s, production was moved from Japan and West Germany to the "Asian Tigers" This ended with the slow decline of this equipment. It was getting cheaper and of lower quality. I have a JVC/Victor brochure from 1980 and virtually every boombox is a dream.

    For me, the RC 838 is the quintessential boombox. It's just beautiful. I saw him with my own eyes only once in my life, in 1981 in a Pewex store. Work was not paid for in dollars, which is the currency in Poland. Such a store was something that people in normal countries had no idea about, it was as if in West Germany someone had opened a store where luxury goods would be sold for the currency of a foreign country and it would not be a generally available currency. JVC/Victor in Poland was so terribly expensive that you couldn't afford it for a year. Simply forbidden fruit.

      It sure is. Almost mint condition. Annoyingly, a more tired unit came up for sale recently (very rare machines), but it had the original box etc. I would have bought it, but I'd already sold this clean one, so no longer needed a box!

      I do have some really crazy trousers! Marvel, Batman, all kinds - my girlfriend randomly buys bonkers ones for me and I embrace the craziness 😁

    Small rubber idler tyres are easy to overlook in certain deck models if you've never serviced those before. Fortunately you didn't find any nasty surprises in your Sanyo (thankfully) just pieces of the original take-up idler tyre and some fluff.

    any chance you could make a video replacing the secondary belt on an MGP-11? 😫 I have to do that because the ffwd and rewind isn't working with a tape in. I imagine it won't be much different from this one but I'm just putting it off because this is my first cassette player and I'm nervous about taking apart the mechanism

    Nice vid as always. Makes me sad you don't have any Saisho or Matsui on here, would love to see restos of those. Thanks for your work.

      Thanks for watching. My first electronics were Matsui, and I do keep an eye out. But to be honest, as popular as they were, there's not too much about these days.

      @@retro_restos My first too! It's all I collect, although I seem to break more than I repair going inside em. Anyway nuff respect for your skills, always great to see what you do.

      Sorry if this sounds harsh but the best place for Saisho and Matsui shit is in a skip. I know I certainly don’t want to watch him devoting videos to restoring bottom-feeder garbage like that which was worse than mediocre even when it was new.

      @@retro_restos My first major electronics repair project (as well as portable stereos) was a 26" Philips TV (chassis K-9 from 1974/75) I'd purchased for a good price from a second hand shop way back in 1988. This particular set had convergence, high voltage and colour issues. It was a modular design, and once I sorted out all of the problems it worked well, producing an excellent colour picture with great sound for a few months until the A66-410X picture tube went to air (the neck had fractured due to the weight of the massive deflection yoke). Ironically it was not the only K-9 Philips set I ever repaired; I soon found myself in a workshop a couple of years or so later, fixing several of them, working alongside a senior technician.. I also got to repair other brand-name TV's including Kriesler, Rank Arena, Sanyo, AWA, National, Sharp and HMV. Replacing large, heavy picture tubes in some of the wood cabinet model sets was a challenge! 😓 * All of these items (boomboxes, walkmans, game consoles, TV's, VCR's, etc.) were popular years ago and made to be serviced whenever they broke down. Nowadays people just throw something like that away when it fails and buy a new one. If you can save one thing from going to landfill and give it a second chance to work again, I say go for it. 😇

    Thanks for the informative video! What would you say are the major differences between the 8190 and 8290? And does the 8290 FF and RW buttons press down automatically when the DRPS is used like the 8190?

    I would love to see you work on a Panasonic / Technics RX-CT980 cassette belt replacement. Great Job!!! You make it look so easy. I've have taken my fair share of radios apart, in my younger years, but (some) could never figure out how to put them back together...LOL

      Thanks for watching. Being methodical always helps with putting them back together 👍The hardest part is trying to find or fabricate spares - that's where most of the time and cost goes these days. I may come across a CT980 one day - you never know! Thanks again📻
