Synapse - Peter Bailer and Kemari Bigbie
Peter Bailer's "Synapse", reimagined by Kemari Bigbie.
Program Notes:
A “synapse” is the junction between two nerve cells where electric impulses pass via the diffusion of molecules called neurotransmitters. For a signal to be sent, a minimum threshold of electric activity needs to be reached. We attempt to capture the idea of sending electrical impulses by using small musical “impulses” in Synapse. Impulses too small must be repeated and elaborated upon before resulting in a “sent signal.” Additionally, in this electroacoustic version of the piece, we tried to symbolize fluid and crystalized intelligence by superimposing rigid rhythmic ideas over a more-fluid form. This piece was originall...

Crotales and Water Bucket Pitch Bending Technique

I made this video to explain and demonstrate one of the techniques I utilize in my composition, Cognitive Dissonance. The crotale being dipped in water should be held with the non-dominant hand of the performer. To suspend the C# crotale, you may want to use fishing line instead of dental floss; some cheaper dental floss will break under the weight of the crotale. I have all of the other crotal...

Nice job to both of you! I can hear the multiple attempts to fully send the signal. I take it that the rigid rhythmic ideas you're talking about is the edm/dubstep beat? One thing I'll say is I really like the instruments, particularly the crystal-like part at 1:55.

Yes, I would say the more rigid structures are the drum beats that come in throughout. Thank you for the nice comment! Kemari made all the instruments, and I agree - they sound great!

@@PeterBailer good on him. Designing your own instrument sounds is such a cool skill. I was gonna say you're gonna make some hip hop/edm fans mad telling them their beats are rigid even if it's true hahaha.

Yo that's crazy, didn't know you could do that. Won't the crotales be damaged by water?

As long as you aren't leaving them in the water for extended periods of time, they should be fine! Be sure to dry them with a towel or rag after rehearsing/performing this technique to ensure that they don't get damaged.
