My 1994 Hzj75 Troopy also does this, it's nothing serious, they all have that Chugging sound, my 1HZ Engine has over 650000 klms on its original Engine and Transmission, and it's still going strong. I Always add some Penrite, or nulon Ezy shift Gearbox additive to the Gearbox and diffs, and it has helped to Quiten down the noise. When I do a gearbox and transfer and diff oil change I have never found any solids on any of the Drain plugs, so I am not worried about it.

I've been doing research online trying to figure out why my 2013 Chevy Sonic is making the same noises because I can't find a single fucking mechanic that's willing to take me up on my offer of $50 for a 5 minute drive. if it is my rear differential is there a way to tell just by looking at it?

BRO MY tundra is making the EXACT SAME NOISE. Was your noise coming from in the front around the center console area ? I’ve been scouring the internet trying to find someone who has the same noise, and you do! My noise is coming right from the transfer case/transmission area, so I replaced the transfer case and it’s still there (uploaded a video on my channel of the noise), so now I think it’s the rear differential. I took the propeller shaft off and tried turning the pinion yoke, and sure enough it’s loose. (1,300 for a used rear differential), ):

Hey mate just came across this vid trying to find answers my troopy sounds identical and I dropped back tail shaft and drove in 4wd so only has drive to front wheels and noise disappeared is that 100% back diff or could it still be the transfer case just because it then doesn’t have the load of the wheels to the rear ?

Pinion nut loose or loss of preload on pinion bearing in rear differential. Re-torque the pinion nut until you get proper preload to turn your pinion yoke. By removing your rear driveshaft and noise going away confirms that. By removing the driveshaft you have removed both accel and decel forces on the pinion keeping it basically in a neutral loaded position.

It doesn't have to be high quality, it's all about the story , do it for yourself first 😉, looking back at this in 10 years you will love it, just do it mate good travels 👍, cheers from rick Perth Australia 🇦🇺

hey mate, I have a Peugeot 307 with the same noise, although the car is FWD is there any possibility that the differential is bad? I know that FWD differential is located somewhere near the gearbox but the noise could come from either of them.

So what is it? Is it my tail shaft doing that sound my 80 does the exact same thing

Thanks bro, I have the same noise and same scenario on how the noise come about. I thought it was the gearbox too because as I put the gearbox in neutral or clutch in like you did the noise disappear and when only happens in coasting as I let off the gas. The only difference is mine is rear wheel drive. So what was the problem with your diff?

I watched this video new. İf you still searching for this issue, my prediction is "differential". I think this sound is coming from pinion or it's seal that is in the differential. I am not an expert :)

My gearbox bearing fais and started to noise before 6months i made 4500km with noisy bearing it runs but tommorow im gonna change with a used gearbox and be done with this noise i hope

Does it like also slowed the vehicle when you stepped down the gas? Sometimes when I step down the gas in 1st and 2nd gear the vehicle just lags and slows down violently. When I clutch, it doesn't.

Nice review. Just done the same as you, Chose for space/ weight saving , in place of comfort.

Having same issue/noise. Without the rear propshaft in 4WD the noise is gone. Took diff apart but all looked fine. Do you know what caused the issue: e.g. wrong bearing preload, damaged bearing, wrong endfloat on the crown/pinion etc? Thanks!

Im having the same issue with my 2002 wrx, sometimes when i get on the throttle it feels like the clutch is slipping as well, but the clutch is brand new. could this issue cause the illusion of slipping?
