Uilleann Pipes: Union Pipe Gavott
Here’s a piece that has intrigued me for years. ‘Union Pipe Gavott’ from O'Farrell's Pocket Companion for the Irish or Union Pipes (1806). Not the kind of dance music you hear played on Irish pipes any more.
I have changed the key from the tune as written. I’m playing it on my c. 1760 C# set made by Egan of Dublin and restored by Sam Lawrence (who also made the wonderful chanter to compete the set).

Uilleann Pipes - Chorus Jig
Просмотров 8673 месяца назад
I got the ’Chorus Jig’ from vol II of ‘A Selection of Scotch, English, Irish and Foreign Airs’ by James Aird (1782). I know of a 7-part version of the tune in the Goodman manuscripts and a 3-part version in O’Neill’s. Although (to my ear anyway) this much earlier 5-part version is by far the nicest. Just a perfect tune for pipes. Played here on the c. 1760 C# set made by Egan of Dublin and rest...

Uilleann Pipes: Ffarwel Dic Bibidd (minuet)
Просмотров 2136 месяцев назад
A tune collected on the Isle of Anglesey in North West Wales and contained in a collection of tunes dated 1768. The tune is called ‘Ffarwel Dic Bibidd‘ or ‘Dic the Piper’s Farewell‘. I’ve taken a few liberties with the setting as written in the manuscript to make it ‘more pipey’. Played here on the c. 1760 set made by Egan of Dublin. So the pipes and the manuscript date to the same period. Love...
Uilleann Pipes: Éamonn Mhagáine and The Pantomime Jig
Просмотров 234Год назад
A couple of tunes from the Goodman Collection. The first is an air entitled Éamonn Mhagáine. The second is a cute little jig I’ve always liked called The Pantomime Jig. Played on a set of pipes made by Egan of Dublin (c 1760) set in C#.

Jig: Lady Hynes on ‘John’ Egan Union pipes (c. 1760)

One of my favourite jigs in the Goodman collection is this 4-parter named ‘Lady Hynes’. Played on a beautifully restored set of C# pipes made by ‘John’ Egan pipes in Dublin c. 1760. With a lovely new chanter by Sam Lawrence.

Piping with a Puppy! - Two Reels from the Goodman Collection

Practicing is always a challenge. Even more so with a curious puppy in the house! He just had to join in for the second tune. Two reels from the Goodman Collection. The Wet Weather/‘Roll Her on the Mountain’. Played on a c. 1810 C sharp set made by Malcolm MacGregor.

👏👏👏
Beautiful!
You know when some music just speaks to your soul, this is it.
Nine points of roguery
Beautiful tune it would go really well with “pipe on the hob”
Very nice indeed. Lovely and smooth.
I shall drink to your future success, thanks for sharing this piece.
Beautiful! 👏👏👏
Very much so.
WARNINGl: This was the very first time I ever, ever, ever-in-my-life, played the second melody. I crashed and burned a few times, so please don’t go copying this. I will record it again, properly. Until then, remember, you have been warned. If I hear anyone playing my mistakes, there’ll be wigs on the green 😱
Any name for the other tune?
Hi Brendan, they’re both variations on the returning lover’s ghost theme; two completely different melodies but the similar theme.
Very cool! Thank you so much. It's on my list to learn.
Beautifully played. Other pipers of distinction to Ronan’s left. Thank you 🎶
Was better to hear live though, great stuff🙂!
Loved it!
Da iawn, diolch
This is the best and the most thorough guide on reedmaking I’ve seen so far across RUclips! This experience and approach is applicable to any other bagpipes reeds. Thank you for sharing!
Very clever fellow and skills of tuning as well .Really enjoyed watching.
Very enjoyable! I love to see old instruments still being played, and tbh these pipes sound nicer to my ears than a lot of more modern sets. I hope they’ll be played for another 250 years, and then some.
I love the earthy sound of your pipe. It reminds me of some Willy Clancy recordings I have. Fantastic.
👏👏👏👏👏👏
Diolch!
This is fantastic! Thank you!!
Great to hear that patsy brown chanter. If you have reed specs, including staple size, please send along.
A whole Orchestra on the man's knees and under his elbow. Go h-íontach ar fad/wonderful entirely.
Diolch yn fawr!
Sounds super
Thanks. It’s a beautiful instrument
@@ricklines4120 You are welcome
You looking a copy of The Northern Fiddler? Just seen a post from you in 2020 asking for one.
Da iawn, lyfli! Great tune, great pipes, great pipers!
Diolch!
Lovely tune, Rick. I still remember the odd Tuesday night session in the back of The Ivy House and it's a shame life didn't allow me to get along there more often. I was always quite partial to your piping. The sparing use of the regulators in the repeat is a nice touch. That last part has a whiff of O'Carolan about it. I've written a jig today which I think would sound nice on pipes. Backed Into A Corner. Check it out at ruclips.net/video/-mJUSnlPD-I/видео.html I'd be interested to hear what a fellow trad musician makes of it. Aidan Crossey
Thanks for the kind words Aidan! Yes some good sessions those days. Thanks for the tune as well. I’ll give it a go and let you know. Cheers!
Lovely sounding pipes!
Thanks Patrick. Hope you’re well
Lovely sounding pipes! Is the chanter original or is it one of Sam’s creations? It sounds perfect with that set regardless
The chanter is original as are the drones and mainstock. Sam’s reed in it. Sam made the two regs patterned externally on a MacGregor set in a museum collection.
@@ricklines4120 that’s a very beautiful instrument, clearly priceless. I have never heard a MacGregor set but had heard his pipes were good in the past. How narrow is the throat? Sub-4mm? It’s reminiscent of old Kennas, Coynes, and similar
@@patrickcannady2066 I don’t know of any other MacGregor sets being played. Some I know are in museums and a couple of sets in private hands although as far as I know neither of those is playing. It took me about 10 years to get the set fully restored. I remember Sam saying the throat was wider than he would have expected. As I remember it’s a touch over 5mm. The bell is 10.5mm. (Correction: Throat is 4.44mm)
5mm? I would not have expected that either. Sounds great 👍
@@patrickcannady2066I just checked Sam’s email. I was remembering incorrectly. Throat is 4.44mm
They sound identical!
Great Sound. A step back in time.Thank you for sharing.
Lovely tune, great rhythm and timing! Thanks for sharing! See you soon I hope!
Thanks Eddie!
Great piping Rick, 5 stars for getting the puppy to hit the regs at just the right spot...team work!!!
Haha! Thanks Eddie. He even shut off one of the drones by licking the end 😂
Some serious music here. Thanks for the contributions.
Thanks, grand piping there from all of you! Have a merry Xmas!
What a wonderful concert. Thank you all & have a very merry Christmas.
Nice barks and nice playing overall! That is a heck of a mushroom cap at the bell of that chanter lol, haven't seen one quite like that before. And of course the fully collared goose neck attachment to the chanter cap is charming.
Great stuff, Rick!
Thanks Martin! Hope you are well

Hey Rick Lines, is Rhondda Piper you?
Hi Greg. Yes it’s me. Hope you’re well!
You are sounding great Rick. I've now got regs, so I enjoy videos where use of regs is plainly visible. I've never been able to crack this tune myself though. Happy New Year. @@ricklines4120
