Transparent solar cells let filtered light into areas where humans appreciate reduced glare while generating solar electricity at same time. Some new solar designs allow for harvesting water from the air or provide solar thermal applications for heating water where needed. The ultimate idea would be panels filled with natural refrigerants for low temperature phase change applications that provide passive air cooling effect when heat is converted to cold reaction of non toxic freon when used.

We have farmed in California’s Imperial Valley since the 1960s, and done so, with increasingly less water from the Colorado River. Meanwhile, LA, Phoenix, and San Diego--all huge users of Colorado River water--have ballooned into the 2nd, 4th, and 5th largest cities in the US. None of these cities is near a natural fresh water supply. LA County alone has more people than 40 individual states. I can understand wanting to live on the coast, and in Arizona, but realistically something will have to give. While the various players in this matter try and work out a water sharing compromise, a huge problem is coming down the road many have never heard of: the shrinking Salton Sea. Located just south of Palm Springs, the Salton Sea is the largest inland body of water in California. It is fed by agricultural runoff. It is shrinking rapidly. IMHO, once its levels reach a critical point, and the Santa Ana Winds blanket wealthy beach front homes in Orange County with alkaline salt the Sea currently covers, a compromise solution will finally be in the works. In other words, once the super wealthy are seriously affected by a dwindling water supply, a solution to the water woes of the Southwest US will be created immediately. Isn't this usually how things work? Thanks for reading.

@Agess, Inc. Your concept is well detailed and a very logical/simple solution. It makes so much sense that I wonder how this wasn't drawn up decades ago. My question is how come this hasn't gained full traction? My only reasoning would be 2 things. It pertains to a small quiet section of a desert community with benefits primarily to just a stagnant lake (outside perspectives) and there's red tape on the Mexicali side as this involves a ton of labor and the majority of effort for this project falls on Mexicos side of the border. Let's be honest, this project would benefit the Salton Sea more so than Mexicali. I'll speak objectively from a negative stance then get to my point for a positive solution, stay with me. What incentive would Mexicali have? A body of salt water in Laguna Salada? They already have a 600mi sea of Cortez literally next door. Blowing a 170ft hole in their mountain for this canal might not set well with the locals either. Then we want to pump even more salt water back out into their delta as a drain? This strictly benefits the US from this concept. Make it lucrative for their community to get this ball rolling by benefiting them equal to or more than the US. Two modifications to this concept would gain interest and benefit both sides of the border immensely. 1. You have 80° water in the sea of Cortez sitting in one of the hottest regions in the world. Distillate (hyper evap) right from their coast, channel an aqueduct to a scraped/deepened and banked Laguna Salada giving them a fresh water reservoir with boosted elevation they can add to their canal network and water source while making its journey north. This next part is what would gain interest on a much larger scale for funding on a federal level. On the east bank of the Salton Sea distillate again then pump it ~1700ft up the Red Canyon? Then at the bend near i10 fork it north and east. North can be used to replace the Colorado aqueduct relieving ~1b gallons per day and the east fork can can fall into the basin below the Parker dam boosting the flow of water helping the flush of the delta. As far fetched as this sounds making the engineering marvel of the Colorado River Aqueduct obsolete, it's not. Powell and Mead are already making national news. Next in line is Havasu. If it gets anywhere near its two higher tributaries it renders both the CRA and CAP obsolete anyway. Benefitting Mexico: • Full US funding boosting their economy 10fold putting hundreds of their locals to work • Long term local jobs with maintaining this new aqueduct. Paying Mexicali annually to maintain this new "aqueduct" assures the US water stays flowing and most importantly guarantees Mexico their share of water as they can tap it first. • Huge water supply boost for local agriculture. • Clensing their delta with a fresh water increase to an already depleted Colorado river. Benefiting the Southwest US: • Revitalizing the Salton Sea. Detoxing the lake tremendously with two sources. • Creates a "drain" for the lake that can be used again maximizing utilization. • Can make a big impact on water released from Mead by replacing the Colorado aqueduct and relieving releases from Parker dam. Water not needed from Havasu can be retained behind Hoover. • Can create more Ag and ultimately jobs. Create tax revenue thru employment and new harvesting lands in route down the box canyon to the Colorado River basin. • Electricity required to pump this water ~1700ft from the east bank can be aquired from 2 sources. Hydro electric from multiple places down the Salton sink and the ~1400ft drop over 80mi trek towards blythe. Also the power required for pumping of the CRA would no longer be used if replaced. Multiple energy sources here to make this happen. Hope I didn't bore you! =) Think it over and goodluck!

The restoration of the Laguna salada is a complete misnomer. The Laguna salada has always been an overflow basin for the Colorado and Gila rivers. It was never filled with only sea water, and has never been permanently full. If it is filled artificially and the Gila river floods like it did in the 90’s the water will have no place to go and it will cause massive flooding. Also there is a fair amount of agriculture around the salada and flooding with salt water could contaminate sweet water wells. As a resident of the Laguna salada I support running pipelines or a limited canal through to the salton sea to help out. But artificially flooding the whole thing could end in disaster

Joseph the time is 22:16 but you are correct. The equipment and labor I bid to clear up to this point was only about 50 million if everything went wrong. I also think your estimate of 100 million is almost precisely right. Once the last 200 ft high hill is breached it is all down gradient from there. I wanted to start with a small flow into pinto wash and then when folks saw it was possible an electric generation plant could be added and the flow could be controlled much like lake mead is controlled. Look up the salton watershed and you will be able to find pinto wash.

After completed, small annual cost to maintain canal but offset with revenue by making boating slips, marinas, housing near water, etc.. Zero cost for water to travel under Mt. Signal via Tunnel. Any progress on getting some of these installed on the Salton Sea? Seems like a no brainer.

Im curious, how high would sea levels have to rise for the gulf of california to push inland to the salton sea? It looks like on the elevation maps ~20-30 feet, but I cant be too sure. Im sure you guys have a better idea of how much exactly would cause this.

So currently high tides at the northern sea of cortez is 7 meters above sea level and pushes the systems water to the northern Laguna Salada and can push water back around to circulate water back to Sea of Cortez. This could have a canal system to let water flow downhill but we are thinking of pipeline to Salton Sea. Looking at both options. With pipeline from Laguna Salada to Salton Sea in a pipe we can generate alot of renewable hydroelectric power to get -235

@@agessinc.4141 This is not going to happen even if free. This is where the term "pipe-dream" came from. If you want to have happier days in the future then change your obsession.
