Broken Cast Iron Pan Repair / Welding, self reliance
Просмотров 178 тыс.12 лет назад
Repairing a cast iron skillet that had the handle break off during shipping. Start to finish welding and refinishing of a broken skillet.
No shit I have the exact pan dropped put a tiny cracj in it paid a welding company to fix it lasted 6 months before where the weld was cracked the bottom, guess I'll try fixing it myself now. Great video I hope it held up hands down sweetest cast iron I've ever owned.
clink, clink, clink
Did it hold up?
yes, we still use it roughly one every two weeks
Your mom will be happy!
It didn't fall off in the oven, I died laughing, you have no clue about how to repair cast iron. Oh and by the way don't ever pick that thing up with hot oil or something boiling in it cause when the handle snaps back off you're gonna burn the s*** out of yourself.
Well, that's your opinion. Kinda hostile don't you think? Oh your wrong by the way. We still use the pan frequently. I use it mainly for stir fry and Pizza. Handle is still on it and it's been through countless heat cycles. Maybe try something in life and be less of an armchair whatever you are. Not defending this as the best way to repair something but trying something out with the tools you have available can actually work. Try it sometime 😂
@@thisoldbeast513 I've been a welder for 44 years, I kind of know what I'm talking about. There's no way in hell I would ever trust that handle.
@@Welderman007 well 44 year old welder how's it feel to be wrong about something. I don't have anywhere near that much experience. I am a hobbyist but. Yeah your wrong or at least to date you are. Although I suppose it might break one day. I don't understand the trust part though. It's a pan for a kitchen not a roll cage in a race car. Worse case scenario here I have to order a pizza one day because my pan drops on the way out of the oven. I can live with that trust relationship. 😆
I have or should I say had a very nice cast iron Griswold 12 skillet. Dropped and blew out the side. Wondering if it is worth fixing. I will ship it to someone if they want to fix it. It just makes me sick to see it go to waste.
STILL GOT IT?
@@romanbernal9157 Yes
@@kcrowe8583offer still up?
Ich war bei der Konstruktion und Bau der ersten Maschinen dabei , und später auch in den USA zur Einweisung . Ich arbeitete viele Jahre in der Firma ..
Did you work on the unimog or the Schmidt portion of it?
Is it still good or return broken
No respect for the flag?....
Do you honestly believe that
I also don't understand why you are blowing the snow across the road you have already cleared?
Has to do with the wind direction and when the snow naturally builds up. I am throwing it with the wind so it's out of the way. It also puts less powder on the windshield if you go with the wind.
So does the Mog have a very slow gear? It seems like you are pushing it hard down that road when I compare it to the way the German municipal guys do it?
I try and keep the rear engine at a constant load. Normally I will sent the RPM at 2500 and load the engine down to 2300 and try and keep it there. The Mog has 20 speeds so I can gear it down. These single stage fan blowers are faster than a ribbon or drum blowers. But really dense snow can stop it if I get in too deep or move the too fast. You can feel it when the rear engine starts to bog down and usually if I just let up on the throttle it will clear the blower and the rpms will come back up.
how is now?
Still working great we use it for pizza and stir fry. No issues since the fix
that is safe to use?
Installing tire chains changes the diameter of the tire. Running a set on one axle on an all wheel drive vehicle, you run the risk of driveline wind up and/or center differential fatigue. I occasionally ran a complete set on my Oshkosh.
Surely with those low levels of grip a driveline wind up wouldn't be an issue?
IT’s September 2022, how’s it doing?
I have thousands of hours in this type of blower. I work, rebuild, repair and restore Unimogs and related equipment. I'm headed to Alaska to train operators and mechanics, will be in Anchorage on the 20th.
That's awesome, I am 400 miles north in Delta. Any good advice on maintenance I need to perform this summer
Mercedes /Puch 406 so nice and useful truck. 2003-2008 we use new Unimog with hi speed gear box in Dakar Rally. 1/18 scale Unimog 406/403 ready to run RC model , very nice body and 4wd system, it is good for play both indoor and garden or display at home or at office. I know a guy who drag races (Prostock-NHRA). He has a complete machine shop on his property. His electric heat treating "oven" is large enough to fit a big block V8. He repairs expensive racing engine blocks that have grenaded. He also repairs other vintage engines (i.e: a fqctory installed, original equipment, matching numbers, etc.). I have seen Ford "A" Blocks come out of the oven glowing red! His welding station has a "carousel" that holds 7 (I think) tig torches. Each torch is set up for a specific welding process or method. Each torch is connected to the water cooling system, inert gas supply, and the Miller Aerowave welder. That way he can change torches immediately. Because: if the block cools down too much it could crack. He can complete more welds before returning the block to the oven. After the repairs are made, the block is returned to the oven and it is cooled down just a few degrees every half hour. It may take a day or two to fully cool. That minimizes the possibility of failure.
Wow quite the setup. 10 years ago I had a garage and a 110 mig welder. If I were to do it again I would probably pre heat the pan and Tig it but it's still holding strong to this day. I would never recommend someone not fix something just because they don't have the perfect setup. Worst case you're out whatever broke.
And he was TRIUMPHANT!
I still use it to this day, we use it mostly for pizza and big stir frying.
@@thisoldbeast513 yeah, it's a beast. I'd hate to get slammed in the head with it... be like a Lincoln hitting you at 95mph... K.O. Yeah, I have a good saying for welding and welds: IF IT ISN'T ON A NUCLEAR REACTOR, AIRCRAFT, PRESSURIZED PIPE OR VESSEL, ELEVATOR, OR IN A MINE SHAFT.... WHO GIVES A RATS ASS! AS LONG AS ISN'T STUCK TOGETHER....Especially if bullets are flying..... its the last week of the month and rent is due....you're in the the race and there isn't any time for perfection, IT'S GO TIME!!!!
@@josephsteffen2378 If only more arm chair RUclipsrs had that attitude. I have gotten slammed over the years for doing this fix wrong. And I would agree there are better ways to fix it but 10 years ago I fixed it with what I had and it's still holding together. If it broke tomorrow I would fix it again maybe different but I would definitely try.
That drone footage is great. I’m looking forward to seeing some videos of any fixes you might have. Also when the weather is nice maybe a good in depth walk around that includes the transmission and transfer case controls.
Love seeing mogs doing work!
Not an easy job for dis combination. Greetings from the Netherlands.
Great video!! Thanks for sharing!! I have a unimog 416 DoKa. I’m at mile 54 of the alaska highway.
We are basically at the end mike 1413 ish
is it still good ?
Yes we use it probably every other week for pizza and stir fry
@@thisoldbeast513 that is awesome :)
Can you fix mine? It has sentimental value
Thanks for the video
The pan looks like cast steel, not cast iron. Cast iron is almost impossible to weld since when you get done and heat and cool the item, the weld breaks. Cast steel welds ok.
Hi, my cAst iron dutch oven is leaking don't know what happened, can it be repaired, I would like to share a picture please
Yeah man! Cast is obviously very hard metal that’s high carbon content... I have had pretty good success with preheating... I would have heated it up in the oven to 450 or so and welded it right there...or on the gas grill... have to remember that it’s not structural for goodness sake... I mean how much bacon can one guy eat! 😂😂😂. If it does take a hit and crack...weld it with the metal hot...it’s the rapid cooling that cast can’t handle so if you weld it in a gas grill and then slowly lower it’s temperature and tap it with a hammer to desensitize the metal structure as it’s cooling you can definitely have good welds with a mig on cast... go ahead and run around the weld area with very light and rapid little peening blows...quickly barley tapping when hot. Remember that any cast iron piece is going to be more temperamental because for it’s carbon to the rapid hot to cold cycle... I’ve used a mig on a tractor engine by using a mapgas torch to preheat it and to keep it hot and slowly bring it down...it’s the radical temperature swing that it can’t handle. You should be very proud of yourself! There’s a lot more people in this world who repeat hearsay...”you can’t do that!” Than there are with actual experience... and variables are always present... the level of carbon content varies greatly even among pans... just remember it’s the fast cooling that will cause cast to crack and you can weld pretty much any of it... welding while it’s already hot is safer... awesome job, bud!
At 13:18 you can see the cast iron cracked again due to heat stress......
YOUNG MAN NEVER USE WIRE BRUSH / GRINDER / CHEMICAL , WILL FILL UP CAST IRON PORE , IN THE LONG RUN U MIGHT HAVE HEALTH PROBLEM / BECAUSE THE CHEMICAL WILL BE GETTING IN YOUR FOOD PLUS + IF USE WIRE BRUSH OR GRINER , WIRE NEEDLE WILL BE INTO THE CAST IRON PORE ! BUT NEXT TIME U CLEANER ANY CAST IRON , USE COURSE SALT WITH1/2 POTATOE ! .
