Do we have to put the 4 lines on the left and right side also ? What is the importance of these lines ? Or is it just for good appearanice?

Yes, it is for positivity and has a spiritual connection.
Well 4 lines may represent 4 vedas but my ideology is different. Will let you know once I get a concrete base about it.
When you draw kolams in Pooja room I would advice to draw 4 lines on both sides.

No, this is a sacred muggu, so should be drawn only in pooja mandir.

You may use white kolapodi or maakolam to draw and add colours to the kolam.
Or draw kolam in colour powder.
