Pedro S: at the start of the video we were on the downwind leg which is generally flown at 1,000 feet above the airport elevation, unless published otherwise (e.g. 700 feet at Brampton Airport which is 11 NM northwest of Toronto Pearson, to avoid possible conflict with arriving Pearson Traffic). CYTZ has a field elevation of 252 feet above sea level (ASL), so I was probably at 1,300 feet ASL. The CN Tower has a height of 1,815 feet above ground level, but the elevation of the tower above sea level as 2,055 feet. After the downwind leg, I turned 90º left for the base leg and at that point you usually reduce power and add 20º flaps to descend and reduce speed to 70 knots in a Cessna 172, aiming to lose about 500 feet altitude before turning final (in this case for runway 08) which puts you at 500 feet above the runway. As I rolled out of the final turn, you can see the last addition of flaps to maximum 30º, and on short final I reduce speed to about 65 knots. Just before touchdown, you can hear a little squawk from the stall horn which warns you that your airspeed is less than 10 knots above stall (with full flaps in a C 172 stalling speed is 42 knots). jkb
The main thing that I never liked when living along the lake in downtown Toronto was that the Gardiner Expressway cut off the Harbourfront area from the rest of the downtown. Imagine what it would be like if they did a “big dig” project like they did in Boston, and buried the Gardiner expressway. It would open up Harbourfront and connect it with the rest of the downtown. Plus, it would get rid of the highway noise.
