The bit about inner monologue is so important. I was never really negative but I was also never positive. I would make some progress and just think "ok. Do it again." instead of being super excited like Louis. I also climb alone a lot so I'm my only source of feedback and after watching Louis coaching for a while I wondered what it was like to have Louis there encouraging me. I think I may be insane but now whenever I climb I just have Louis' voice in my mind constantly giving me positive energy. I think everyone needs their own Louis in some way shape or form because it makes climbing so much easier and more enjoyable. (Though I think my Louis has an Irish accent because I live in Ireland)
I think even Louis has his own down time, but as long as we can make the effort to stay positive all the time, I think it could have a massive impact on all our climbing. I spent quite a lot of time climbing alone too so I totally get you🤣
Honestly seeing that Louis has his moments of raging is super helpful for me. He always comes off as cool and collected and it's important to remember that getting to that point took intentional effort.
Yeah he's a nutter out of the climbing gym. I saw him in London pushing an old shopping trolley and when I said "Hi Louis, going climbing?" he spat and me and shouted "go away" - of course he didn't have his trademark glasses and ginger hair, he had long, grey matted hair, a raincoat and big bushy beard. When I emailed Catalyst about this they said "It obviously wasn't him at all was it?". I guess now I've written all this I can see they were probably right.
I think Louis is so brave I guess you would call it for showing him at his most frustrated moment for thousands to see which is usually a climbers most embarrassing moment to share.
I think having a positive inner monologue is really important in life and not just climbing, however, i'd be careful about not allowing yourself to feel angry because it's deemed "inappropriate". It's more about how you can feel through it, and let it go, so it doesn't completely ruin your entire climb. I think a lot of the mindfulness tips applies to climbing really well. There was one day that I'd gone to the gym, and was already having a really bad day, and normally i'd be able to release the frustration just by moving my body which constitutes the warmup of my session. However that day, I'd stewed so hard in my frustration, that I actually generated a tendon strain. Probably a scream outside the gym would have helped a lot more than "not being angry".
Just got done with a bouldering session where I was super hard on myself. This was the perfect video! I love Louis, so cool to see you do a session together!
I'm a mental coach for climbers and I love that you raise the importance of mindset! However, I have to say that it is usually not that simple to change your inner monologue. Our brains are like a popcorn machine generating thoughts all the time. Some times useful, some times unhelpful, often irrational. You cannot much impact that but you can decide which ones you believe and act upon. Once you've become more aware of your inner dialogue, it is usually helpful to work on them when you are not climbing. Writing down things that you often tell yourself on a piece of paper is a good first step. Then it is helpful to distance yourself from the thoughts, seeing them as they are: just thoughts, not necessarily something worth paying attention to. Reflecting on if the thoughts are helpful or not, can also give some perspective. There are plenty of methods used in psychology that can help. So, that's off the wall. Getting into analysis mode or arguing with your own thoughts (like Louis said he was doing in the video) is not effective when you are supposed to climb! What helps then is learning to accept the thought, but actively deciding to turn your focus into something helpful (like how your foot is positioned on the hold or on the next move). Might feel hard initially but mental skills are like physical skills - you only get better by practicing! Thanks again for raising this important topic!
Great stuff as usual Louis! I’m absolutely guilty of this! When I boulder with mates I hype them and we give great encouragement and are super supportive. When I’m alone I dang shred myself with negativity and I get so angry with myself. I’m going to make a conscious effort to “hype myself” and support myself like others would. Thankyou for bringing this to light. I really didn’t realise how hard I am on myself
@@Jonathan_sin88Did they send you a branded chalk yet? Would help with visibility. Great content, posted 6 days ago... How long are you spending in edit, none of those routes exist anymore 😉
Louis is such a good coach, I would love to have the opportunity to recieve his wisdom. And Jonathan is such a great recipiant of this coaching. Fantastic collab! I would listen a 2 hour padcast of them just talking.
Great work on the slab. It was fun watching that, especially after your awesome video with Johnny Dawes. I'm curious if you do much work on your ankle flexion. I can't tell if you were maybe at the end range of your mobility there as it seemed like your heel lifted off more compared to Louis (could also be the shoes). I always thought I had good flexibility but my PT pointed out my ankle mobility needed work lol
The "no one's looking" bit I'd put a caveat which is that if I saw you climb in a gym or at a crag, since you're somewhat recognizable, I'd be paying attention, but if you fell I'd think "damn, that thing must be hard". I've seen Mejdi Schalck climbing at my gym and failing on boulders (right after Budapest so he was in beast mode), overheard them saying it was a kilter 8b+...was just cool seeing him and other World Cup climbers climb !
I do look a lot but I either think, "wow that's hard", "how would I do that", "why did that work" or "what would make that work". In the last three cases I'm just trying to see what I could learn, in the first one I'm just impressed
Might be of interest but the book The Expectation Effect (Robson) is very good. Basically how to reframe our inner thoughts can and does have remarkable positive effects. Well worth a read
This is such a great collab, and so encouraging 😩👌 I'm visiting family in HK in 2 weeks, is there a gym that you would recommend as a must-go while I'm there??
I’ve tried rugne chalk and i swear it fricking GRIPSS compared to the chalk ball my local gym has. I waited until black Friday to get a lifetime supply
Great vid as always! Does anyone happen to know a good beastmaker routine for getting stronger fingers? Ive been climbing for almost a year now and the only physical thing holding my progress back is my noiceably weak fingers.. (I climb around V5-6)
The tantrum conversation is very interesting. Seeing strangers yell and cuss and kick their chalk bags makes me feel very uncomfortable and even unsafe in the gym! And getting that tilted can’t be good for your performance….
Hey Jonathan, I just watched your video and I must say that it was really informative and well-made. I was wondering if I could help you edit your videos and repurpose your long videos into highly engaging shorts? I can also make high CTR thumbnails for your channel

What I did was make my inner monologue French. Since I don't speak French I've no idea what I'm thinking about and ignore it.
