Nightwish, Ladies and Gentlemen!!! They have opened the Valhalla gates, and now the Valkyrie Goddess walks among us 🤘🤩🤘!!! This is one of three great openings from them ("Dark Chest of Wonders", "Shudder Before the Beautiful" and now "Music" intro followed by "Noise"). This was Floor’s coming out party at Wacken with Nightwish. First time some of the crowd had ever seen or heard her with Nightwish, as she joined this tour when they were in the US and later South America and hadn’t recorded and released any new music with her yet. Needless to say, she won them over immediately, capturing their souls from the getgo and not letting go for 15 songs. Also, this song is Jukka's (Ex Drummer) favorite! NWSU 🤘😎🤘.
Yes it’s working great reaction! Dark Chest of Wonders was the opening song for the 2013 Wacken Concert. Even though Floor had joined the band on their North America tour when Annette Olsen couldn’t continue because of complications due to her pregnancy. “ Please Learn the Setlist in 24 Hours” is a great documentary about how Floor was ask to fill in to finish the tour. Wacken 2013 was kinda Floor’s introduction to 82,000 Metal heads as Nightwish’s singer even thou she had been on the tour for about 10 months she was not officially been announced as a permanent member of the band! You’ve now saw the opening number of Wacken. Their was 15 songs in the set Ghost Love Score was the 13th. Last Ride of the Day! Is the last song. The entire concert was magical but Nightwish albums are masterpieces, their videos are fantastic but in this humble old metal/rock head opinion Nightwish live is magical! it is in 48 hours not in 24 hours . the Nightwish documentary is : "please learn the setlist in 48 hours" . I continue to consider that whole story a great achievement in itself . she got a call from Nightwish at her sister 's wedding , going home packing bags , a 3-3.5 hour plane to America , and then learning the 15 songs from an existing album that you 've never even heard before ! .

This song was my introduction to Nightwish when I found that video on RUclips in 2015. I had never heard of Nightwish before, just came up as a recommendation. I was immediately hooked
Know what you mean about the Nightwish hangover! It lasts a long time, especially after their longer masterpieces. Sounds weird, but I often need to listen to Disturbed's cover of Sound of Silence just to recover from Poet and the Pendulum! I guess too light of a song would be too jarring to listen to...idk, but that's how I do it when a 3 hour hangover is too much!
An early song from Once in 2004, but still on the setlist today - in fact Dark Chest has been on the setlist for every tour since the Once Upon a Tour! Only Nemo, Wish I had an Angel and Wishmaster have been played more. Perpetually popular for good reason!
It's been a week already!? Dark Chest is a pretty amazing way to open the show, it was the longest-standing show opener they used before switching to Shudder in the 2015 EFMB tour. For the vast majority of this Wacken 2013 crowd this was the very first time they saw and heard Floor live, so there were all sorts of pressures and expectations in the air. The Wacken 2013 concert being such a memorable occasion is in large part because of this.
Well now Mme. JyngerSlaps, I told you of Tuomas' pseudonyms when you did "Dead Boy's Poem" and tangentially referred to this very piece, quote: ". . . he says he is a man with a boy's heart and you will see that directly in places, here for instance, or elsewhere as "one with a pure heart", a line Floor sings in a high head voice as you might hear from an excited small boy. " So, the one with the pure heart is Tuomas as a small boy. You know he writes from experience and observation, the dark chest did and might still exist. Tuomas found it in his grandparents attic, filled with toys and books that took his imagination on all manner of wild rides and exciting places. Think of this, metaphorically: "Once there was a child’s heart, The age I learned to fly, And took a step outside. . . . . . . ." "Fly to a dream, Far across the sea, All the burdens gone, Open the chest once more, Dark chest of wonders, Seen through the eyes, Of the one with pure heart, Once so long ago" Makes sense doesn't it ! 🙂

This is from 'Once Upon a Nightwish: The Official Biography 1996 - 2006', the time is the year 2003, when they were making the Once album, which ended up being a huge success: ---------------------------------------------- The rest of the Nighwish Famiglia had also learned to trust Tuomas' visions. "The band understands that the final versions sound nothing like the demos", Tuomas says. "I had to try and make them hear an orchestra and vocals here, a choir there, in order to convince them that it will sound good in the end. And no one ever said anything against it." "Tuomas can hear the kettledrums and choirs and orchestras in his head, but we can only hear the keyboards and the rhythm", Jukka laughs. "Although he tries to explain all those things, you really can't figure out what the song will sound like in the end. But you can't object, either. When we first went through the songs, I felt like there was no hit material on the album. Even 'Nemo' didn't catch me at first. Marco was initially completely dumbfounded by Tuomas' plans. "I often had to ask Tuomas what the hell's going on in the song", Marco laughs. "Like, 'Is this where the vocals will be? Is this the chorus?' "I was so wrong about 'Dark Chest of Wonders'", he admits. "I hated that song and I even suggested It'd be left out altogether, partly because the original lyrics had magic wands and stuff like that in them, but also because it sounded really messy. But once we got it on tape, I realized it sounded so good that it should be the opening track. I guess I was initially under the wrong impression that on this album, the band sort of...grows up."

@@ev-1832 If it wasn't planned, it was perfectly done. They cross exactly two steps in front of her, right at the opening!! They move on the stage in what appears to be choreography during the show, so it wouldn't surprise me if it was planned.
I can't say this was one of my first Nighwish songs I'd heard.. but it was the first track on 'Once', the first Nighwish album I purchased in 2004. Looking back, it was also the last album with Tarja and the first album with Marco.
First of all, I just read your post. Good to know your area hasn't been too badly hit by the hurricane. As for the song, this was the first in the set, the ice breaker. This was Floor's first big concert in Europe with Nightwish, she wasn't even an official member then. Well, she walked on stage and she completely owned it 🤟
A Nightwish a day keeps the mental doctor away :) but little doses to begin wirh is definitely wise. The first week I only listened to the same 3 songs because it took me a bit to soak it all in. See you next week!
This was for the most part the introduction of Floor as THE SINGER for NIGHTWISH....Im assuming.alot of people already new of her at this show from After Forever but im sure a huge amount of people had no idea who she was or what she sounded like .....they all did by the end of it .
Also, since Wacken is a festival and usually sold out months before no one there bought the tickets for Floor. They all expected Anette. What a surprise this must have been.
Floor goes above and beyond delivering super high energy and clean vocals in every single song, throughout the course of an entire concert packed with challenge after challenge to nail every single note. Her talent is mind-blowing and the entire band is so stoked having the Valkyrie goddess open the show with energy that lasts from beginning to end. Awesome reaction, and I hope you're serious about doing two a week. If we were to take a vote, I know 100% of us would vote, YES PLEASE to two a week. Cheers from Canada.

I assume you're talking about The Poet and the Pendulum when you mentioned research. Since that deals with the aftermath of the breakup with Tarja, are you going to listen to a song with her before then? If so, try Wishmaster, The Siren , or their cover of Phantom of the Opera. All from End of an Era.

My personal remedy would be to listen to Floor in After Forever, Star One/Ayreon, ReVamp, Northward, Beste Zangers 2019/Sing Meinen Song 2022, her covers or to Floor as a solo artist. Mixed in with some documentaries and or interviews with Floor. I think that might actually work. I just have to listen to her voice on a daily basis.
NIGHTWISH DAY! That was a lot of fun as always, Jynger and I wouldn't mind 2 NIGHTWISH DAYS... As long as it works for you, it will work for us. We're not going anywhere! Something else you could do is a live stream while watching a whole concert together with all of us. You already checked out quite some Wacken (2013) songs, but also Tampere (2015), Buenos Aires (2018), Hellfest (2022) or Deichbrand (2022) are all amazing! It will be so much fun!

This is a great opening song...especially since it was Floors first appearance at the Sacked Open Air Festival! No tissues needed for this song! I rather enjoy seeing you smile!!
I truly enjoy your reactions to Nightwish and look forward to each one. Once you've reacted to everything you're going to from this Wacken 2013 concert (and I REALLY hope you will react to ALL of the songs at Wacken 2013 because every one of them is phenomenal) you really need to watch the entire concert from beginning to end (it's available on RUclips in HiDef). It is mind-blowing to see the whole thing beginning to end (do it on a big screen TV with surround sound and a good subwoofer and you will be transported to a different place).
This was like an old style Western, where Tuomas and the gang crash through the doors of a saloon where they bust the place up and Floor steals everyone's souls and they roll back out leaving everyone wondering wtf just happened.

This song was my introduction to Nightwish when I found that video on RUclips in 2015. I had never heard of Nightwish before, just came up as a recommendation. I was immediately hooked
Know what you mean about the Nightwish hangover! It lasts a long time, especially after their longer masterpieces. Sounds weird, but I often need to listen to Disturbed's cover of Sound of Silence just to recover from Poet and the Pendulum! I guess too light of a song would be too jarring to listen to...idk, but that's how I do it when a 3 hour hangover is too much!

It's been a week already!? Dark Chest is a pretty amazing way to open the show, it was the longest-standing show opener they used before switching to Shudder in the 2015 EFMB tour. For the vast majority of this Wacken 2013 crowd this was the very first time they saw and heard Floor live, so there were all sorts of pressures and expectations in the air. The Wacken 2013 concert being such a memorable occasion is in large part because of this.

Well now Mme. JyngerSlaps, I told you of Tuomas' pseudonyms when you did "Dead Boy's Poem" and tangentially referred to this very piece, quote: ". . . he says he is a man with a boy's heart and you will see that directly in places, here for instance, or elsewhere as "one with a pure heart", a line Floor sings in a high head voice as you might hear from an excited small boy. "
So, the one with the pure heart is Tuomas as a small boy.
You know he writes from experience and observation, the dark chest did and might still exist. Tuomas found it in his grandparents attic, filled with toys and books that took his imagination on all manner of wild rides and exciting places.
Think of this, metaphorically: "Once there was a child’s heart, The age I learned to fly, And took a step outside. . . . . . . ."

Nice reaction again. Dark Chest of Wonders have really cool backstory. This is from 'Once Upon a Nightwish: The Official Biography 1996 - 2006', the time is the year 2003, when they were making the Once album, which ended up being a huge success:

The rest of the Nighwish Famiglia had also learned to trust Tuomas' visions. "The band understands that the final versions sound nothing like the demos", Tuomas says. "I had to try and make them hear an orchestra and vocals here, a choir there, in order to convince them that it will sound good in the end. And no one ever said anything against it."
"Tuomas can hear the kettledrums and choirs and orchestras in his head, but we can only hear the keyboards and the rhythm", Jukka laughs. "Although he tries to explain all those things, you really can't figure out what the song will sound like in the end. But you can't object, either. When we first went through the songs, I felt like there was no hit material on the album. Even 'Nemo' didn't catch me at first.
Marco was initially completely dumbfounded by Tuomas' plans. "I often had to ask Tuomas what the hell's going on in the song", Marco laughs. "Like, 'Is this where the vocals will be? Is this the chorus?' I obviously needed some information about the backing tracks as well, to know where I could let it rip, and I often wondered would there even be room for anything else - like, 'How much stuff are you still going to layer on top of this?!" I was still feeling skeptical while we were doing the demo version of 'Dark Chest of Wonders', and I really didn't get the track until I heard the finished version. On the demo, Tarja's new singing style was still at a try-out phase, so you couldn't really hear the power in the song. But after proper production, the track changed quite radically and you could hear the point."
Tero (engineering, producer since 1997) was another dissident not always convinced by Tuomas' ideas. "I was so wrong about 'Dark Chest of Wonders'", he admits. "I hated that song and I even suggested It'd be left out altogether, partly because the original lyrics had magic wands and stuff like that in them, but also because it sounded really messy. But once we got it on tape, I realized it sounded so good that it should be the opening track. I guess I was initially under the wrong impression that on this album, the band sort of...grows up."

@@ev-1832 If it wasn't planned, it was perfectly done. They cross exactly two steps in front of her, right at the opening!! They move on the stage in what appears to be choreography during the show, so it wouldn't surprise me if it was planned.
I can't say this was one of my first Nighwish songs I'd heard.. but it was the first track on 'Once', the first Nighwish album I purchased in 2004. Looking back, it was also the last album with Tarja and the first album with Marco.

First of all, I just read your post. Good to know your area hasn't been too badly hit by the hurricane. As for the song, this was the first in the set, the ice breaker. This was Floor's first big concert in Europe with Nightwish, she wasn't even an official member then. Well, she walked on stage and she completely owned it 🤟

This was for the most part the introduction of Floor as THE SINGER for NIGHTWISH....Im assuming.alot of people already new of her at this show from After Forever but im sure a huge amount of people had no idea who she was or what she sounded like .....they all did by the end of it .
Also, since Wacken is a festival and usually sold out months before no one there bought the tickets for Floor. They all expected Anette. What a surprise this must have been.

I assume you're talking about The Poet and the Pendulum when you mentioned research. Since that deals with the aftermath of the breakup with Tarja, are you going to listen to a song with her before then? If so, try Wishmaster, The Siren , or their cover of Phantom of the Opera. All from End of an Era.

My personal remedy would be to listen to Floor in After Forever, Star One/Ayreon, ReVamp, Northward, Beste Zangers 2019/Sing Meinen Song 2022, her covers or to Floor as a solo artist. Mixed in with some documentaries and or interviews with Floor. I think that might actually work.
I just have to listen to her voice on a daily basis.

Once you've reacted to everything you're going to from this Wacken 2013 concert (and I REALLY hope you will react to ALL of the songs at Wacken 2013 because every one of them is phenomenal) you really need to watch the entire concert from beginning to end (it's available on RUclips in HiDef). It is mind-blowing to see the whole thing beginning to end (do it on a big screen TV with surround sound and a good subwoofer and you will be transported to a different place).
