This song brings me back to the Roller Skating rink in New York when I was 9, summer 79. Good times!
Shalamar's best song was "Dead Giveaway". Also, Jody Whatley had a huge solo career after she left Shalamar!

Second Time Around was released back in 1979 ish from what I can remember....
The Second Time Around peaked at #8 in March of '80. Shalamar also had success with "Dead Giveaway"(Peaked at #22 in '83) & "Dancing In The Sheets"(From the movie Footloose. Peaked at #17 in '84).
This is from their 1979 album "Big Fun". "Let's Find The Time For Love" is another gem on there and a great ballad.
"This Ring" by Shalamar has to be a top 3 wedding song and great hit outright. Howard Hewitt, Stanley Clarke and George Duke acoustic "Heaven sent" video just before George left us is amazing for any of you true music nuts.
"This Ring" is actually entitled "(This is) For the Lover In You"

Shalamar is a group definately worth reacting to....they had quite a few hits in the late 70s....Jody Watley and Jeffrey Daniels were former Soul Train dancers....Michael Jackson studied some of Jeffrey's moves and used it in his stage performances....then you had Howard Hewitt who was co lead singer of group with Jody Whatley.....both Jody and Howard had big solo careers when they left group....so you have great choices....you have reactions to the group and their solo hits
Not sure what hits you're talking about unless they charted outside of the US because Shalamar only had 1 hit in the late 70's and that wasn't with the original lineup.

It’s more post disco. The basic disco beat had the hint cymbal on the up beats, like in between each main beat. Hi hats are the cymbals that can clap together, operated by a pedal. Disco beats were generally faster than this. Shalimar kind of hit just off the tail end of disco, like ‘79 into early ‘80’s. What was big at that point was roller disco, like skating rink jams. Jeffery Daniel, who handled the choreography & also created the Moonwalk, used to hang out in skating rinks & was into skating quite a bit. Other songs that used to get people up in the rink were, Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough, Rock With You & Gimmie The Night.
Jeffery Daniels the tall thin one dancing was a professional dancer and invented the MOON WALK. Michael Jackson just took credit for it.
Yes, a little bit of a 1979 post-disco vibe on this song. Fyi, we used to call R&B "Soul Music" back in the day. Before rap music got really big, it was mixed in with Soul at the record store. (... And the young folks say, "What is a record store?". Lol My, how times have changed. Feeling old.)
Maybe my favorite group of that 1979-1983 time frame. The lead singer Howard Hewett was great and had a fantastic solo career after dissolution of Shalamar. Jeffrey Daniels dancing was legendary from his work on Soul Train and had a fan in Michael Jackson from my understanding. Jody Watley had a huge solo hit called "Looking for a new love??" or something like that. Check out "Over and Over" by them.

JJ, Ouch! I'm injured by you rating this the way you did. This was a pure R&B song, breaking out of the disco mold. Disco was bad for R&B; it started the move to drum machines and clap tracks. It was the start of removing the musicianship from tracks. Also, Shalamar was on Solar Records, run by Dick Griffey (Whispers) an founded by Soul Train's Don Cornelius. By the way, take a look at the views for today's songs.

Howard Hewitt was a singer and Jody Watley and Jeffrey Daniels were dancers from Soul Train, and the grapevine had it that they dated, and Howard felt that the group was him, and they were solely there as backup singers which destroyed the group. Howard did some solo stuff, it was alright and Jody did some too, and I liked her tunes better ;0 anyway, I liked Shalamar, sorry they broke up #PeaceOut

I follow Jody on Facebook and she ran into Howard in the airport about a year or so ago and they took a selfie together and she said it's all love. I hope that is still true.
