Thanks for the heads up on Kevin. I first met him at Secrets about 14 years ago. He was quite popular and we had a mutual friend. The friend was quite wealthy and would bring over from UK cans of baked beans for him. We would go to his beer bar and drink till the cows came home. At that time Kev had around 6 working girls in bar. Another soul broken from adult Disneyland. A waste of a precious life
Mate, like I say in the video, I don't know what happened to Kevin in the end but one of the comments says that he is back in the UK now. I really hope that is true and he turned his life around. Maybe the story has a happy ending.
I’ve done Pattaya over 40 times…..not a monger….had friends there….married 19 years to my thai wife….we live in uk now….sad about your mate, but it’s the Pattaya disease…..love Thailand…..even now
I knew Kevin as well and after he lost the bar i met him and helped him out a few times and he told me that he didn't wanted to go back to the UK every he was sleeping at the beach at the time. Some people you simply can't help.
You have a good channel with interesting tales. I have been on vacation to Thailand for over 10 years. I had a long-time Thai girlfriend who was friends with Kevin's girlfriend El. My Thai girlfriend worked in Kevin's bar on Walking Street. I met Kevin when he was the bar owner and he seemed like a friendly guy who liked his alcoholic beverages. I always frequented his bar because my girlfriend worked there and he was a good host. Unfortunately, a couple of years later I heard that he had come on hard times, lost his bar and girlfriend, and become homeless. During one of my vacations, I let him use my shower in my hotel gave him some money and bought him some beers from a local 7-11. I never heard from him after that vacation, but my girlfriend told me he finally went back to England. I know his old girlfriend has a new boyfriend and works at a bar in Treetown in Pattaya. It's a small world and I hope all involved a happy & successful future.
Hi Simon great video my new favourite channel so good to have a London voice. So jealous of the red horse but a bit strong. We shall be going in May for 6mths. Take care Jim
Interesting topic - one aspect of this is to consider what a people in Kevin's situation have awaiting them upon return to their home country. Some may be avoiding the justice system and some may tell themselves it's better to be homeless in warm SE Asia rather than the cold West. I'm not sure about the UK but in the US social assistance can be quite limited and you could soon find yourself on much more dangerous streets than you would ever encounter in SE Asia.
Interesting story.. I guess I've been a semi snob to be honest Simon. I have a 6th sense about people in a way.. and I just don't associate with troubled souls. Maybe that's my own flaw. NOT passing judgement.. but there is a HUGE and almost singular common denominator in these tragic stories, ALCOHOL. I'm NO BETTER than anyone.. but I made my choice as a child, through my teen years and into adulthood. I've never had alcohol nor drugs, never. My addiction.. sports, women and maybe Pepsi and Mt Dew? Keep making the videos brother..
Yeah but since you’re a snob. You yourself could be the troubled soul. NPD-Narcissistic Personality Disorder. There’s 5 different subtypes. Many have this disorder and go undiagnosed. There’s no cure, only treatment. Individuals with this disorder never seek help for it due to the very nature of this disease which makes them blame everyone else but themselves. Likely, they might seek help for other illnesses this disorder will cause (rather than the main problem which is NPD) like Alcoholism, Compulsive Gambling, and Depression. Many who have NPD swear by it that they are not the ones with the problem and often they take it to the grave.
Strange as it may sound I don't think alcohol was the primary driving force that got Kevin in the mess that he ended up in. His drinking was definitely a major factor in terms of his business going under, but I think the major driving force behind his decision to stay past that point, to end up on the streets, in prison etc was a sex addiction of some sort. He would still have been able to drink back in the UK after all. In retrospect I don't think he could face reality of leaving the bar girls and free lancers in Pattaya behind, despite how desperate his situation was. Pretty sad really when you think about it.
Sounds like a potential interview for the channel mate 😁 Great to hear from you mate, I noticed you hadn't been too active on the old social media recently, I was starting to worry ❤ Be lucky my old China 👍
Simon, Many thx 4 the video... Tragic, but unfortunately as you also state not an uncommon story... Also, as a side bar, the wrong girlfriend scenario has happened to many of us, luck of the draw etc..... Cheers Glenn
If you go broke anywhere it is usually down to you, your poor planning or economic ineptitude. I retired early, at 50, to the Philippines, with my family - married for 8 years. We have cash, property that is always appreciating in value, business interests and investments. These provide us with a regular decent income. Neither of us actually needs to do any work since our income is passive, although we do. I've met 'expats' in the Philippines who struggle to get by financially, are reliant on social-security and who have problems, usually alcohol-related, and are engaged in doomed relationships. I live in area devoid of expats - I've probably met 2 or 3 in the past 5 years - so I don't have to deal with their problems or intrigues. Another commentator states that he may be a 'semi-snob'. However, there's nothing snobbish about providing for yourself and your family. I'm having a beer right now, but I'm hardly going to get wasted.
where can you get bottles of Red Horse, only cans 8% here in Bkk. If you pay the outrageous prices for health insurance in your 70's you will go broke.
You need to look after yourself as an independent traveler even for short periods of weeks or months let alone years. The locals while friendly are generally in no position to support you and in fact you’re supposed to support them regardless of your situation. Honestly to live as an expat in any of the usual haunts in SE Asia or Latin America you kinda need to be a bit of a survivalist.
Thanks, you're right but I did cover that in the description. It was touch and go whether I even published it. Going forward I'm probably going to stop doing outdoor recording while I'm in Dumaguete.
@@NickKautz Thanks for the advice, it's much appreciated 👍 The problem I've got (although it's a nice problem to have) is that the channel is growing faster than I thought it would and I'm playing catchup in terms of equipment etc It's all a learning curve but I will catchup and it will improve 👍

Oh Jim, that's fantastic mate. "Your new favourite channel" that's really made my day 😄. 6mths sounds good mate 👍 Take care
red horse and leo they taste the same to me .
Really? I'm not a fan of Leo. In my Thai days, I was very much a Chang man 👍

Enjoy your beer mate 👍 Is it a Red Horse??
San Mig Light - I'm not up to the ravages of Red Horse. I'm a bit of a light-weight in that respect!@@SpeakingofAsia

Hi Leroy, wise words mate. I agree with you 100%
Friendly advice; try to find a quieter place to video or get better microphone tech .. Way too distracting ..
Thanks, you're right but I did cover that in the description. It was touch and go whether I even published it. Going forward I'm probably going to stop doing outdoor recording while I'm in Dumaguete.
Sounds like you're using an omni mic. It's meant to pickup sound from all directions. You want a cardioid or shotgun.

I would add also to speak slightly slower so non UK viewers can understand through the accent
I hope you have really good insurance Simon as that liquid sliding over your tongue will eat you from the inside out. It's a pinoy party popper.
😱😱Oh dear, I didn't know that. So San Miguel it is then 👍
Very boring.....
Thank you, it's not the first time I've been told that but it's always nice to hear 👍
