Ben, I haven't watched this video yet but I do indeed watch every one you do. I don't comment much as I watch them on TV so no keyboard! I'm sending this as I watched you last night on a podcast with two guys I haven't seen before. I really enjoyed it for the same reason I watch all you videos, you speak your mind, you are respectful and humble and I learn a lot. Keep up the good work.

Ben you haven't seen high interest yet . I'm in my 60s my Dad had a loan in 1979 for 18.5 percent my brother in-law in1982 had a loan with 22.5 percent . Most of my 20s and early 30s I paid 10-13 pecent , I farmed though the farm crisis of the 80s the recession 80s and 90s so it makes me chuckle when I hear younger people talk about the high interest rate . I'll tell you the same thing as I tell my kids and nephews and nieces is run your life don't let others , don't try keeping up with your neighbor and lastly grab every odd dollar you can make . love your channel

Great comment. Since you live during the farm crisis period and have seen it. I want to ask an honest question.
We are not seeing the 18-22% that you guys did, but how does the amount of money you barrowed to grow a crop compare to today? So I guess what I'm asking is - We are close to half of the interest rates but our expenses are way more than double?

@@iowANFarmer ben back then everything was cheaper far as what it cost ,bag of single cross corn would cost you around $ 30 a bag and fertilizer would cost you $80 ton . Now that would sound really great but we sold corn for $1.50 wheat for $3.00 and are yields corn 100bus and wheat 60 and with those you where the talk of the town . Beef fat cattle was 35 cents a pound and fat hogs got you 40 cent a pound . what I see the biggest problem facing young farmers today is wanting to be like his neighbor who has been in business for 60 years and has taken a life time to build this operation

Ben, tough times make tough people. Good times make soft people. You’re right, gotta watch the spending and the fun spending. I assure you that these interests rates ain’t shit compared to the early 80’s. That time period, late 70’s into early 80’s is what decimated family farms. I was a kid but I remember it. 18 plus percent interest rates. Commodity prices horrible. Crops and cattle prices. Times always change, technology always changes. But as you eluded to opportunities present themselves as well. You have to be prepared as best as you can. While the 80’s were tough for my family, it set us up to what we are today and continues to shape our decisions to this day. Dad took a chance and bought a place that belonged to two brothers. Naysayers said he was crazy. That crazy decision backed with preparation, knowledge and balls worked out.

Nice rolling land, do you have do environmental impact study before removing trees n adding tile eystem to your farm? Great comments with way farming is going at the moment, i been farming for 25 years droughts, odd flood n up n down in commodity prices, hang in their, support your community, value add your farm even small projects like local veg garden, chook house, even buying house cow then share night where community can get together n share meal n conversation. Don't forget ask local council or big business for support because we are all in this together. I swap my naughty dog Willow as she like chewing cables too LOL.

As others have mentioned. You haven’t really been through the 18 to 22 percent interest rates yet so you have been blessed. I agree with the advice about watching your expenses and not necessarily needing the new shining tractor or pick up truck. I believe you need to be flexible and I see a lot of RUclips farmers getting away from raising Livestock because they don’t want to be tied down but guess what eats 3 dollar a bushel corn 😊. The pig market is controlled by the packers and they can stave out the little guys but the only way to fight back is direct to consumers sales which adds value to your check book. Same with Cattle and people do want to know who’s raising their meat. Be cautious about over extending your credit because that’s when farmers get into trouble then they have to start selling land which is where people lose their farms. I was told 50 plus years ago to Remember the Bankers aren’t your friends so be cautious around them because they don’t really care where their profits come from. The field looks good and I give it a B 😊 for the work you put into it.

I know the Ag market is a global market, but I don’t really understand it all. I’m watching the farmer’s protest in Europe. Does the low price of Ukrainian grain hurt our farmers(& Canada) in the same ways? Flooding the market w/ cheaper grain w/out all the EU regs? I’m more worried about Biden’s “think tanks” doing the same thing here that farmers are protesting over there then anything. You’re far too young to remember the Carter years. First time I heard my dad drop the f bomb was when he ran out of gas & it wasn’t his license plate day to get it. Life was hard. Inflation in the 80s was terrible.
