Hi Michael. Thanks for this. It is really good to know about the Resynthesizer Plugin. I have been using the Heal and Clone tools primarily, so appreciate seeing your use of the Airbrush tool, as well. One thing that I have found useful in helping to make the appearance of two different but adjoining areas of texture gradually blend into each other is to use the Gaussian Blur filter. Of course that does not help with colour, so one has to get the colour right first.
This is a hard job and you made it majestically! I have plans to start doing this as a second job and this tutorial of yours really helped me and got me excited already. Fantastic job, dude! - EDIT: I wrote it too early... 31:01 How dare you say you are not an artist, man? What you are doing is art!!! Digital art is also art!
Muito obrigado Michael... Este video me ajudou a retirar uma frase que estava em cima da imagem... Foi dificil instalar o Heal Selection no notebook, mas consegui....
Michael Thanks for the tutorials one of the most difficult things to remove is a totally irregular edged grayed area from part of a photo do you have a tutorial for that?
Superb. Another reason to ditch Photoshop for good 😊 by the way thanks to your tutorials I decided to start posting my own videos on GiMP editing but they are more focused on product photography.
I know this is an old comment but why do people ditch Photoshop? I prefer Gimp myself because it's free, but maybe this restoratioin might have been done quicker and better in PS or not?
I have an old (WWII) greyscale photo of soldiers with some very faded names written on top. scanned it at 1200 dpi to PNG. Any suggestions for enhancing that?
I just start learning gimp but i use mac osx. the problem i have is how do i install Resynthesizer plugin and the Heal Selection tool? if you could make video on this or post me a link. thank you love your work.
I don't get why you are using the paint tool to do the repairs around the tear across her mouth when the clone tool at a reduced opacity would give your far more precise color and texture samplings with which to reconstruct the damaged areas and save steps...unless altering from the original image is a goal. Your tutorial guided me to the resynthesizer plug in about which I had no idea; thank you so much for teaching me about that; it was hugely informative. Your videos are spoken at a good pace and are easy to follow.
When correcting photo imperfection, I use the lasso tool, hit enter, enhance, but my version does not have heal selection as an option. Where do I fine heal selection? I'm using 2.10.6.
That's part of the Resynthesizer Plugin.....a download link, as well as a link to instructional video on how to install it, are in the production notes above.
Thank you! I have a tutorial on the Top 5 Photo Enhancements to use when working in GIMP (not sure if it is what you are looking for specifically - if not let me know): ruclips.net/video/TiavEWDVQGE/видео.html
@DaviesMediaDesign First of: great tutorial. I know, this is an older video, but i have a question to a similar process shown in this video, but has some distincitve differences, that (in my opinion) sometimes would drastically alter the workflow: For a photobook I made a few years ago, I edited some old family pictures. I worked directly of the negatives, but they have been stored away very poorly over the last 3-4 or so decades, so they decaded quite a lot. After scanning and color-correcting them, I started working on them, but some of them were severely damaged. Damage to Film expresses in a different way as damage to images on paper. Many negatives have been stuck together, and as a result a lot of the photosensitive emulsion (in the end that is what the image is made of) has cracks like paint that dried to fast or even flaked off. The problem then is, that the "texture" of the image then is something you don't want to keep, but rather get rid of entirely. I cannot figure out a good way to archieve this without a) retouching every single area of the image by hand or b) use softening-filters, until the texture disappears (which degrades the quality by an order of magnitude) Another great example of degradation of negatives is a color-shift. sometimes you cannot really distinguish between a wanted effect archieved by filters or degrading film causing a colorshift from a red to a green hue across the image. What might have looked fancy in the 80's is something that you really want to get rid of nowadyays (regardless if the colorshift is intended or not) How would you approach an issue like this/can you do a tutorial for a cases like this? (if needed, i could provide sample images for both described cases)
I copied the file from github into the GIMP plug-in directory, when I run the filter I get an error saying "Calling error for procedure 'gimp-procedural-db-proc-info': Procedure 'plug-in-resynthesizer' not found", how can I fix this?
At 15:50 you talk about using the heal tool - I can press CTRL and select a reference spot, but then when I hold the mouse button down and try to heal areas nothing seems to happen?
I think it’s better to scale the photo down after repair. It’s much easier to do detailed repairs with higher resolution. Just my 10 cents. I always scan photos in 1200 dpi and downscale after repairs.
make sure that the feather edges option of the free select tool is not selected...it worked for me by the way, I'm only 1 year late to solve your problem...is that ok??
I realise this app is free but it's extremely frustrating to use and a learning curve. Why do all the icons have several tiny attachments rather than just the single tool itself? I know people will complain that I'm complaining about a free program but why do you need a crosshair on the tool along with an icon of the tool? Can all of this be turned off so you have just one icon or crosshair or brush while moving the mouse it seems a bit crowded.
Hi, I'm a total beginner: just bought a great fast scanner primarily to scan old faded photos. I downloaded GIMP to my desktop computer. Do I have to download the Resynthesizer Plugin? I'm nervous about doing this.
The Heal Selection feature is part of the Resynthesizer plugin, which I mentioned in the video is an external download. The link to the download is in the description of the video.
Hi. I'm using the latest version of GIMP 2.10.22 on Windows 10 Home. I've followed the instructions on the tutorial five times, deleting the plug-ins and reloading etc, but get this same message when using the Heal Selection "An error occurred running python_fu_heal_selection. error: procedure not found" Any help fixing this problem would be very much appreciated.

I came across an old school photo the other day, and was shocked to see it quite badly damaged. Will use your video to help me restore it, cheers ;)

could you simulate it with Fresco In Borja?
