I was really stoked to hear about Mega Mek when I first dove back into the lore & finally playing tabletop (Classic). It is a great resource for list building & for busy dads like me it is easier to play the AI or with my son that lives 900 miles away as him getting into Classic is what gave me the justification to drop the C bills on some box sets. I also travel a lot for work being out of town for days or even a couple of weeks so I really need to see if this can run on my Chromebook & if not then I could better justify getting a better laptop. Would love to be able to play Mega Mek & HBS BT in my hotel room! I had seen another channel showing how to use Mega Mek, so your timing in impeccable Frog. Hope your vacation is going well!
It can run on anything, but benefits from better single-thread performance. I'd recommend a good Mac laptop. I personally have a 2019 MacBook Pro (which is considerably worse than the newer ARM versions), which can run immense battles in MegaMek with basically no loading and a good six to eight hours of battery. It can also run RogueTech, with considerably more loading and charitably an hour of battery. The newer laptops can run both faster and for an entire day.
If we set up the timing, I'd gladly play MegaMek multi player. You did good, Princess Bot has the luck of the gods.
Motion seconded!
Fun match to showcase how the Piranha works. The Machine Gun Arrays are pretty neat, the only other place I’ve seen them used is the Linebacker Configuration I, which mounts two arrays of three MGs in each arm.
Sometimes amazing.
Nice to see Megamek over here!
You had a Thunderbolt and a Zeus across the table from pack of anti-infantry lights without anything to tip the odds in your favour. It was an uphill battle from the start. Hopefully your star got word back to heavier elements to come clean up.
While not the most riveting content you’ve put out, it dose show how those little guys can punch above there weight class when used properly.
Back when I was playing classic (took a long break due to multiple reasons) I found a rule in the old total warfare book that gave ways to use multiple weapons to be grouped together in various ways. That mimics the arrays.
"Action-packed!"
Definitely need tge MW2 soundtrack playing, as this is way too relaxing. It's nice being able to hear him though without the ambient music being too loud. It's funny thinking how important music is & that some more aggressive music would make you feel the tension of combat.
Weapon-linking is one of the few rules that isn't implemented in MegaMek. It's interesting, but I think the main effect is to speed up gameplay. Reminds me a bit of aerospace weapon bays, or even the weapon groups of the MechWarrior games.
@@MechanicalFrog MegaMek isn't quite as visually engaging as HBS BattleTech, but I deeply enjoy actually playing it. And it's a damn sight faster than RogueTech.
@@jeremysaklad6703 yes that rule was intended to speed up play. I like it.
Was unaware of Megamek until fairly recently. Currently having fun running a mercenary campaign with stratcon enabled.
Very interested in it's potential for bringing the Battletech community together.
Would definitely watch more content like this, tutorials, and/or campaigns.
How have I not discovered megamek sooner, it was originally released in 2002!? It's awesome
Oh it's quite fun. A great way to get your BT fix in.
Honestly would prefer 5 MGs to 4 MGs +Array given how the cluster table works. Assuming you can Hit on a 12, roughly 3% accuracy, 5 MGs will deal .27 DPT, while 4 MGs with Array will average 2.5 hits on the cluster, with the same 3% accuracy, meaning it will average .13 DPT, or roughly half.
Ah, MegaMek. That game I want so bad to play, but can never, never actually make work :D
Oh no. :(
@@MechanicalFrog Or at least, couldn't when I last tried, oh, 2 years ago. AI would take literal days to process turns :(
And playing it multiplayer is just a lot of work :D
Maybe try the latest version?
The problem with the newer versions of megmek is that they need Java 11 or 17. And any version of Java past 8 is a massive pain to get.
Please keep doing mekhq and ambient music videos this is great!
Yo and make mechanical frog stickers I want one!
I do like some mekamek games, and if timing is on our side id be good with having a game or two.
Strong showing from princess though.
MegaMek is my new favorite thing! Offer stands to join me and the 9th Talon Falcon Lancers in 3055!
Nice video man. I'm just getting back to table top and discovered MegaMek a few months ago. I'm definately up for multiplayer. Let me know.
Glad to hear you're getting back into the game. MegaMek is great for scratching that BT itch when other humans aren't nearby.
I remember playing a game like this about 20 years ago when my kids were babies and needed some schmuck (i.e. me) to rock their moses cradle with their foot whilst doing something else. For a while I watched late night poker but as a non-poker player it was a bit dull. Then I found a very basic game that looked a lot like this that scratched my BattleTech itch. If it's the same thing it's amazing (and tickles my heart strings) that it's still going. (Edit - it has moved on. Every Mech looked like a Jagermech from above no matter what it was when I played it)
Back in the beforefore times... :D
Very cool! If youd do a tutorial on how to do some of this stuff in MegaMek I would be in your debt... I know the basics, but joining maps together and having blind enemy forces is beyond me. Thanks for the content!
I am also a bit of a newbie as well
May be a bit gauche, but Casual Joker does have some tutorials on how to set up MegaMek and how some of the functions work. There's a couple older tutorials as well, while some of the button placements and such have changed so you might have to do some digging, the options themselves still exist.
Yes!
Princess is without mercy or remorse.
Aff
Thus was awesome
It was something...
Well you didn't have the best showing for the Piranha, but what an endorsement for the Cauldron Born.
The Ebon Jaguar is a beast.
Lovely bitey Piranhas...
Nom nom nom
@@MechanicalFrog They shootin', enemies are hatin'
Given you can add custom units, keep track of personnel and have campaigns atb...maybe megamek NEC vs Last Resort?
That could be fun.
How's the mechlab in this, is a Dragon with a sword boating MG arrays a thing you can do?
So long as it doesn't break the game rules, you have a lot of flexibility in the MegaMek lab.
Hope you can get some other advanced rules to work in MM.
Almost all of the advanced rules are there.
@@jeremysaklad6703 Yes, but they can be tricky to implement. Still haven't gotten VTOL bombing to work, for instance.
@@oneproudbrowncoat It works for me.
Over 7k heck yeah
Are you able to adjust AI difficulty on this simulator?
I can give you a firm I don't know. I am a megamek newb
It's been a bit since I've played, but you can adjust Princess' (the AI) settings. IIRC, when you're in the lobby you can select Princess on the left side of the screen and adjust some settings there. You can also adjust each instance of Princess individually, if you have a three-way battle.
*Locations of buttons and setting may differ, it's been a bit since I've played, and haven't upgraded to latest version of MegaMek
lol got this so when I play Battletech in real life I don’t look like an idiot 😂
I wish it had a mode where you could slow things down and it showed you what is going on with each dice roll. It would take a lot longer, of course, but it would be an easier way to learn the game.
well considering your opponent had over 100 tons on ya those pirannah did well but being light mechs just did not have the sustain to get stuck in with those heavys
Still a fun little exercise.
I'd say a good light 'Mech can sustain itself quite admirably, if you're patient and careful. With air supremacy, at least: bombs don't care about your Target Movement Modifier.
