No matter whatever I've heard about Sonic R from others, I have never been able to deny that I absolutely ADORE the presentation of the game. Not to mention the attempt at translating the level design conventions of 2D sonic into a 3D racing game, what with all the branching paths and hidden collectibles and such. Such a cool touch imo.
I'm not that big of a Sonic R fan, I can't even stay playing the game for too long, but for some reason I periodically feel the need of playing Tag the Four Characters in Regal Ruins with Tails, it's kinda like a ritual
Kinda sounds like you like it more than you want to admit XD We all have our guilty pleasures, man. I have such good memories of racing my siblings in this game. Who cares whether it’s good or bad? It’s fun!
Maybe it's just nostalgia in play, but I feel Sonic R would have been genuinely good if they had added a reasonable amount of tracks and balanced the character stats out better. Even just adding Reverse race to Grand Prix and VS or implementing some developer ghosts in Time Attack would have added a touch more replay-ability.
If you ask me Sonic R is in a similar place that Marvel vs Capcom 2 is in it's not easy to buy by any means but like what the fans are doing with Marvel vs Capcom 2 Sonic R fans can too start up a conversation to get Sega to notice there are fans of Sonic R and they can remaster it for modern consoles so people like me who never played Sonic R can on all consoles whether with friends or family.
I love this game so much, I still use Sonic's funny run cycle from time to time. And the awkward way everyone slowly steps forward after "GO!" still gets me.
Sonic R was one of the first Sonic games I played, and to this day it's my favorite non-crossover spin-off of the series. It's short and it was a bit hard to control when I first played it, but the levels are extremely well-made and the music SLAPS. I was extremely excited when the first teaser for Team Sonic racing dropped, because of the emphasis on the R of the title. Unfortunately it wasn't a spiritual successor to the game at all, which makes me both mad and sad.
Sonic R was one of my absolute favorite games growing up. I played it when I was a kid, I played it as I grew up on the Gamecube, I could never get enough. I'd spend hours just absolutely *breaking* stages with Super Sonic, taking absolutely insane shortcuts that no other character could easily take. They're very fond memories for me, and the soundtrack? I still remember each and every song. I love this game, and I'm not at all ashamed to admit it.
I always saw it as a oddity, when it works it can be fun, but when it doesn't it's a nightmare, the main issue being steering or turning around, it's like controlling a tank, I always liked the soundtrack and the multiplayer can be a good time.
Man I’m so happy you made a video on this game. I’ve watched pretty much all your videos so far and I grew up with the gems collection so I have serious nostalgia for this and Sonic The Fighters. Also nice rapping from 29:07-29:12 XD

Emulate the saturn or gems collection version. The gamecube emulation is solid so emulating the gems collection version on dolphin might be a better idea.
The music in this game is definitely fun. It makes sense in the broader scheme of the Sonic series, too. If you think about it, the soundtracks for Sonic games have always tried to express the sense of freedom and fun in the gameplay through whatever music was contemporary and cool at the time. In the late 80's and early 90's it referenced MJ, in the later 90's it referenced high energy contemporary pop, and in the 2000s Sonic Adventure experimented with hip hop. They really pay a lot of attention to making each soundtrack cool and put their own spin on the best new musical trends.

4:15 Sonic Drift was first released to western audiences in Sonic Adventure DX's unlockable game gear games, not Sonic Gems Collection. Love the video! Thank you for your passion!
I think it's definitely the best Sonic racing game in terms of ideas. Rough around the edges, certainly, but the ideas it had were incredibly innovative, and it did enough with those ideas to show what a Sonic racing game could be. Yet they never returned to the format. Fun bit of personal trivia, this game (along with some help from Funky Kong's theme from DKC) helped introduce me to the incredible music genre that is 90s Eurodance. If you think the soundtrack to Sonic R is fire, then you'll love bands like Culture Beat and Masterboy.
Knuckles actually used to have a buckle/wrist watch in his old artwork and even on his old 1993 Sonic 3 McDonald's toy. It stopped being used in Adventure.
4:14 "Sonic Drift 1" came to the west in 2003 with "Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut". The game wasn't even in Gems Collection, except for a timed demo in the museum.
I’m definitely going to try this game out when I can. The concept of an on foot sonic racing game sounds like it has SO much potential. And after adding the Sonic R soundtrack to my Spotify, I’m very eager to give it a run.
I remember playing Sonic R on my pc, and yes I was scared of Tails Doll as a kid, hearing about the little horror stories and watching the Sonic Shorts bits. I think the game now is fine. A little slippery with the controls, but it’s fine. Music is pretty good too
The game is good, the controls are intended. I'm just saying, if the game was branded as a 3rd party car game, or Mario and call it "Mario:Mushroom Kingdom R". It would be called "hilariously fun" and that's it, no artificial smack talk against it.
One thing about Metal Sonic is that his jump gives you nore control while still in the air. It gives him this sort of Sonic R playstyle like "B-Hopping"
my dad had gotten sonic spin ball and sonic 3&K for Christmas as a kid. he’s told me multiple times that he enjoys spinball more because he played it with his sister
You don't have to convince me of anythin my guy, I have sunk so much time into R and The Fighters thanks to gems collection. I didn't even go through the ironically liking it stage honestly.
Sonic R is one of those games I geniunely have a soft spot for as a decent game, I don't see it why it's a bad game in general (even though it has flaws) as I think decent Sonic game for the saturn, and espicially since the music is so dang good it gives me 80s and 90s vibes in general, and I do think Sonic R is really an underated Sonic game that deserves more love and attention overall. Nice to see Sonic R is a guility pleasure of yours like a man of culture always says.
Sonic R is my favorite Sonic racing game, even with more polished ones already existing. Fun fact: If you unlock every hidden character _except_ Super Sonic and play as one of the hidden characters belonging to Pool B, normal Sonic will be one of the opponents, which is the only time a character from Pool A can be raced against as a character from Pool B. Of course, when you _do_ unlock Super Sonic, he will replace normal Sonic as the opponent, and normal Sonic will no longer appear as an opponent.
I love sonic r. Here I thought I knew most things about this beautiful game. Only thing I never realized was the stages all starting with R though that would have been my own stupidity for not actually realising that lol. Great vid Chaomix good work.
There's a less known use for rings, the more you have the faster you go. You can start a race in factory, turn around and go up the ramp to the ring dispenser, wait to get 999 rings and then easily win despite starting a lap and a half behind the AI.
Watching this video made me remember the recent remix for "Can You Feel the Sunshine?". Guess it's time to run it back! My first experience with this game was on the GameCube (never got to own a SEGA Saturn), and like yourself, the soundtrack, color, and gameplay blew me away. I don't often indulge in racing games, but Sonic R does set a standard that I wish was still followed today - with some tweaks where necessary, of course. Also, it must be said: the amount of work that went into piecing this video together is not only noticeable, but highly commendable. Your video essays on Sonic are always worth the time and clicks. And Mickey Mania references?! OH GOD, YES. *Blue Blurs for Life!*
We need another game like R again. For some reason to me it kinda stood out from the other racing games where youre on foot mostly instead of a car, the levels have branching paths that make them feel like mini open worlds too and it rewards you for exploring. The music was even pretty catchy and I know Sega hasn't forgotten about R if they occasionally reused a song or two such as in Generations. This needs a rerelease or at least a remaster with extra characters, another few levels, and new models. Maybe better controls since turning was painfully slow at times.
Sonic's Schoolhouse is a guilty pleasure of mine since it was the second Sonic game I ever owned as a kid after being introduced to the series by Sonic 2. I also loved Sonic Spinball even though I could never get past the third stage.
Interestingly, Tails doll made a recent appearance again in Sonic Superstars as an easter egg being one of the gold enemies you have to defeat in order to gain 100% completion
Used to play this on gems collection back then. One of my guilty pleasures as well, ive noticed people trash this game. It was clunky at first but you get used to it its kinda cool. I literally explored the maps with all the characters and the music is 90s nostalgic and kind of underrated
I would've loved a successor to Sonic R just by the roster alone! Really hoping we at least get a playable Knuckles in the upcoming game, I've always digged his gameplay.
This was a fantastic video, Chaomix!! From the editing here to the expansive discussion, I was grabbed the entire time. I've been a fan of Sonic since I was practically able to walk & speak lmao. Being involved with the community that long, you pick up ideas and rules from people more experienced than yourself. Many games were praised, some not even talked about (like Schoolhouse and Labyrinth) but some games were downrigth shamed, and advised to not play at all, and you better believe Sonic R was one of them. Like you and several others, my first experience playing Sonic R was with GameCube's Gems Collection, and while I went into it ready to rag on the game... I was surprisingly weirded out. "From what I've learned, this game is bad! So... why do I kinda enjoy it?" Needless to say, besides CD and Fighters, it was definitely one of the games on that disc I played a bunch, haha. Also, props to you for explaining the psychology between the character apperances on foot versus in a car decieving players; it's a great point many don't discuss. It's very true; the 'automobile' controls mentality will make your gameplay experience more convenient if you know this going into it. Finally, if there's one thing this game was known for, it's definitely the T̵͖͚̼̯̦̻̺̭͖̼̲̗̎̔̊̽̒̆͜a̶̡̛͖͙̭̺͍̼̪̗̋̄̈͐̄͆͂̽͝ͅĩ̷͈̼͌͆̍̆̑l̸̨͙͎̖̪̯͚̠̳̭̺̹̉̆̀̇̑̈̀̈̈͌͜s̶̢̢̻͚̹̯͔̦̳̣̓̾̇͠ ̷̜̰̽͐̍̆̒̍̄͆̄̀̽̾̎͜D̵̨̡̢̦̻̚ṏ̴̦̬͎̯̣̱̣̖̙̤́̔͐̾l̷̲̜͕͎̦̥̿̒̍͒͐̊͒̑̓̕̚͜͝͠ļ̶̞̜͓͈͕̻̟̫̦̣̱̥͕̓̅ - soundtrack! There's a reason I believe Sonic R is not only top 5 OST's in the Sonic series, but top 10 in gaming history! Like, how is EVERY track my favorite?? Either way, keep up the great work, man! And stellar thumbnail art! (AND HELL YEAH, WE CARRY ALL THE GROCERIES IN ONE GO LIKE ABSOLUTE BOSSES)
You can cheese your way through water areas with Metal Sonic by jumping repeatedly on the water's surface. As long as you don't let him sink, he can do this infinitely.
Growing up I put a lot of hours into Sonic R on PC. Something about it was fun to, even when Gems Collection came out I still played it maybe not as much as the PC port, but I still think it’s a fun game. The crazy thing is the PC port the music didn’t work for some reason. When I heard the soundtrack on Gems Collection I was blown away about it.
The replay option after a race has some cute lines too just as the replay starts. I loved playing Sonic R when it first came out and I still love playing it now. I use the Saturn version.
The flaw mentioned at 16:00 is one I sympathize with as a racing gamer. A lack of diverse opponents diminishes the experience in a game like this especially. when there's only 10 characters, the least you can do is vary up who I'm racing each time to spice things up. even if it's only an aesthetic difference.
Sonic R was one of the first games I ever played. I liked it as a kid, but going back to it I felt pretty underwhelmed. There are some good ideas here though, like the weather system and the variations in characters, but it's let down by confusing track layouts, piss poor character balancing, and only having 5 tracks. It's one of those games that deserves a fan remake with modern technology. We have so many more characters now that could be added. How awesome would it be to play Big the Cat and being able to barge people out of the way due to your weight, or as Cream the Rabbit and send Cheese the Chao after your opponents? Or Shadow and being able to use Chaos Control if you get enough rings to get an advantage, or Silver, where you can use telekinesis in some way. There are actually a lot of amazing ideas that could be implemented into such a racing game. It would actually be amazing.
Actually, SEGA and Sonic Team should just make a game with online/multiplayer function with multiple mechanics and unique levels with diferent goals, for example: You could choose a gameplay like a race where you can play as Sonic, Shadow, Metal Sonic and other speed characters that you can costumize as well, and they would function like the Sonic vs Shadow rival battle in Sonic generations with the goal similar to Sonic R (aside the exploration stuff) You could also choose other gameplay mechanics like the exploration of Knuckles or even a brand new puzzle solving with Tails, and much more other gameplay mechanics that are diferent and fun at the same time, and it could even be implemented into an offline game but that's for Sonic Teams christmas wish list Hopefully Sonic Team wont miss this shot in the next game(s)
"Spin off" Pretty damn certain SEGA stated it was canon to the other games. The PC version is the one I played as a kid. And boy did I ever play the hell out of the game. Tails Doll also showed up in the comics.
chaomic: i'll be talking about the pc version as its probably the most accessible me looking it up and only finding a physical pc copy being sold on amazon: uhhhhhhhhh
I had the run of the PC port where the music was mistakenly left off the disc. I still knew every song before I ever played a proper version of the game.
I think it's okay to adore this game for what it is. I see it as the ultimate turn-your-brain-off goofball fest Sonic game. This is by far one of the most relaxing games to watch a Let's Play of, and the soundtrack is rather excellent.

This game is so fun when you master the controls. It makes me feel like a speedrunner lol. I never get that feeling from Mario Kart.
Sonic R is the embidiment of, "Yes, there's so many better games, but I like this one."
It’s not a “guilty pleasure”. The game is great! Use the L and R buttons to drift. It’s great!
Agreed! I feel like there is so much potential here for a sequel. I'm not sure if Sega would ever want to return to it, though.
Used to play this on gems collection back then. One of my guilty pleasures as well, ive noticed people trash this game. It was clunky at first but you get used to it its kinda cool. I literally explored the maps with all the characters and the music is 90s nostalgic and kind of underrated
I will never understand why there is no second Sonic R. I just mean...it would have made more sense to have that instead of team sonic racing?
I would've loved a successor to Sonic R just by the roster alone!
Really hoping we at least get a playable Knuckles in the upcoming game, I've always digged his gameplay.
Yeah, Team Sonic Racing is pretty great but the whole Sonic-In-A-Car thing doesn't really make sense.
@@simonhanna3679 No, I mean...Sonic already has had stuff in cars. And the Boost basically explains itself.
@@simonhanna3679 I mean, outside of Shadow and Metal Sonic, who can really race Sonic in a Post-Boost Mechanic landscape?
Well is very simple. People actually like team racing
I liked the Chuck E. Cheese Reference, lol
"it makes more sense for them to run around on foot"
Sonic topspeed: speed of sound
Tails topspeed: like 50mph
Tails doll fact: Tails doll is canonly a robot builded by Eggman. He is kind of a metal tails.
I know that you draw your thumbnails and they are always great, but oh my god this is great.
I read the Thumbnail as:"Give Sonic R a Chance. Chaomix"
Metal Knuckles returned in Sonic Advance 1.
It’s always fun to sit down and beat the whole game in one sitting, I only wish it was longer
Despite Sonic R being pretty underwhelming, even if you like it, its one of the least controversial sonic titles.
Gonna share this to everyone, dude ur awesome!
The weather can also be change in Sonic Gems Collection, which it just the ´PC´ game of Sonic R.
The Saturn version looks like a gorgerous work of art when displayed on a high quality CRT.
Actually, SEGA and Sonic Team should just make a game with online/multiplayer function with multiple mechanics and unique levels with diferent goals, for example:
You could choose a gameplay like a race where you can play as Sonic, Shadow, Metal Sonic and other speed characters that you can costumize as well, and they would function like the Sonic vs Shadow rival battle in Sonic generations with the goal similar to Sonic R (aside the exploration stuff)
You could also choose other gameplay mechanics like the exploration of Knuckles or even a brand new puzzle solving with Tails, and much more other gameplay mechanics that are diferent and fun at the same time, and it could even be implemented into an offline game but that's for Sonic Teams christmas wish list
Hopefully Sonic Team wont miss this shot in the next game(s)
"Spin off"
Pretty damn certain SEGA stated it was canon to the other games.
The PC version is the one I played as a kid. And boy did I ever play the hell out of the game.
Tails Doll also showed up in the comics.
chaomic: i'll be talking about the pc version as its probably the most accessible
me looking it up and only finding a physical pc copy being sold on amazon: uhhhhhhhhh
I had the run of the PC port where the music was mistakenly left off the disc. I still knew every song before I ever played a proper version of the game.
I can feel the sunshine while super sonic racing.
I think it's okay to adore this game for what it is. I see it as the ultimate turn-your-brain-off goofball fest Sonic game. This is by far one of the most relaxing games to watch a Let's Play of, and the soundtrack is rather excellent.
