Why? It might be because that a lot of US players are slow starters and tend to take at least half a set to a full set to begin to go full throttle. So maybe Speraw believe that his players would just adjust and begin to play better as the sets went on. Also you have to remember that most of the bench was filled with 3rd and 4th strings, because Jaeschke is injured and DeFalco and Ensing have returned to college for their college season.

Because that can change the tempo of the game and changing players disrupted the game of the americans. I understand the american team lacked a few players but switching out at least Matt for a bit would have been best. If nothing else, to let him calm down and look at the game from afar. Speraw could have switched Matt with Patch, if not for the whole game just for a moment to let him get his shit together.

Even with Kovalev playing as their main setter, USA has a very good serve, all their three main spikers (Anderson, Sander, and Russell) are hitting with 50% efficiency, and their reception are exceptional. So basically Christenson has so many option. Russia on the on the other hand, commit so many errors even witj their last game with Brazil.
