Tijana Pusica got it on my forearm and it wasn't as bad as I expected. It stung a little bit in the beginning, but after awhile you really dont notice it that much! Maybe that's just me, but go for it!! You can handle the pain :))
For me the outline is like OMFG. .next the shading, thats like OMFG. Then they wipe you with a this paper towel from hell that feels like its made of an alcoholic brillo pad full of broken glass... OMFG. last but not least you open your wallet and then OMFG.
@@yvngpoltergeist8778 I have an atleast 8 hour sesh on my sternum bc the tattoos big and because my artist is slow which I don’t mind but you can bet I’m lathering on a shit Ton of numbing cream 😭 so nervous
Ok I have a very strange technique : 1_ I count to 10, slowly. 2_ I count again, but this time I try to "see" the numbers, like they are giants numbers in the room. 3- I count again, but this time I try to imagine that the number are a certain color 4_ I count again, and this time I try to make the numbers do a certain move (and they keep their colors from the step 3), for example the 1 is jumping, the 2 is floating and so son... 5_ I repeat the steps, and I try to change the colors and the moves each time I hope it's not too weird lol, but it worked really well with me :) It also work if you want to calm you down if you feel anxiety coming up :)
+Mewesical I did half of my stomach, one side of my torso, and the piece was continuing on the back a little bit. We did 2 sessions of 5 hours and 1h of touch up a month later. I was really focused the whole time, I wanted the tattoo so bad :) (we did 3 smoke breaks)
Aah ok i get it :) sorry English is not my first language ;) I do this technique since I am 10/12 years old, it helps with anxiety, panic etc.. so I guess it works well because I'm used to it.
This is what I used as a kid getting the belt, and it worked great. It did piss off the punisher though!! Flirting back and forth with the tattooist also helps.
Indeed! I suffer from really heavy migraine attacks, especially in summer, and it even works on this. I just pretend I'm an actor and need to laugh for the cameras lol
LexiexLoco when ever I get my eyebrows waxed I laugh the entire time not even knowing why but it helps. My body just does it by itself I don't even have to fake laugh.
I got tattooed for 3 hours this weekend and during the outline, I was like ''hahahahaha wow I forgot how easy this is'' then the shading came... the shading... yikes.
What worked for me is thinking how much I fancy the tattoo and that I love to have it over me and this is a magic moment between me and the artist and hell yeah! Reggae music during the session helped too!
I don't listen to it either but the tattoo artist likes it when we works and I realised it relaxed me. I think I have read that reggae affects the heart pulse and can relax you. Anyways! Greetings from Greece!
i'm not a particular fan of reggae either, but my tattoo artist also plays reggae music whenever she tattoos me and i could basically fall asleep every time
Why do you say that? I've gotten a tattoo which is kind of thin but like 20cm long on my arm and I didn't feel any pain at all to be honest. As Katrin wrote and said in the very first seconds in the video, feeling pain is different for anybody. Just because you felt pain while getting your tattoo doesnt mean other people feel the same ^^
It totally depends on the size, detail, amount of shading/colouring, placement, and pain tolerance of each person and their tattoo. My second one didn't hurt at all; in fact I fell asleep in the chair. My first only hurt when he did the colour, and it was nothing I couldn't tolerate. Neither of my tattoos are tiny. I don't think it's fair at all to make that judgement when every person's experience is different.
My tip is blasting music on your ears so you dont hear the tattoo "gun". Only feeling the pain, but not hearing it helps. Atleast this is how i get through it.
Yes, its normal, just tell the artist that this is the way you cope with pain. And make sure he isnt affraid to tap you on the shoulder if he wants to get in contact with u, (For changing possition etc).
Is agree I'm 5 sessions in on my sleeve I go every weekend work on different spots and artist is super heavy handed but I blast music and sing the songs first session was 9 hours then 6 now just doing 3 hour sessions still sucks though
I start thinking about how my boyfriend lied 7 weeks ago & start plotting how I'm gonna start the argument. By the time I've got it all figured out, it's over 😊
The "convince your brain youre not dying" part is actually very clever- this is also how professionals teach you to deal with excessive anxiety. You cant choose not to experience pain, anxiety or discomfort when it is with you, but you can choose whether or not youre distressed by it. Great video!
i have sensory processing disorder (reeeeeaaalllly short explanation: my nervous system broke) so i really think the 'convince your brain you aren't dying' tip will work for me!! thanks for this video xx
smoke weed or go drunk or meditate ...they will work...take breaks if you need so it's not continuous pain. Use a numbing cream if you have to bring some aspirin
yeah you can... but of course they make you sign a paper first. If you go drunk it will thin your blood so you should tell them if you're drunk...if you're high just don't tell them. Most artists will try be professional by making you sign the paper however they honestly don't care if you're drunk or high as long as you're not being an idiot or moving constantly They will just apply vaseline as they are tattooing which will prevent as much bleeding
Cool fact the disinfectant the tattooist uses to clean/wipe your arms is mentholated spirits a type of alcohol. So either way doesn't matter if you been drinking you gonna get alcohol into your blood either way via metholated spirits
I’ve finally committed to having my first tattoo, several years after giving birth to 2 children. The way you describe getting through the pain of having a tattoo is so similar to the way I was taught to deal with contractions. In the moment, you gotta believe that the pain isn’t there because you’re dying. It’s because you are creating something beautiful :)
What gets me more nervous is the clean smell that you'd smell in a doctors office or hospital. Brings me back to when a doctor had to cut my arm open in front of me 😭
It's mental, you need to change your mindset, i have learnt one thing when it comes to handling pain, i had felt all kinds of extreme pains since i was a kid and had the same reactions, huge adrenaline pump and all that, afterwards i thought to myself, this pain will hurt as fuck no doubt but it won't kill me so its all good. Whenever i'm doing something that will hurt, i don't think about it beforehand, i expect it to hurt but i just sit and get over with the pain. Humans can take insane amounts of pain and still function, it's amazing
that's interesting because that's actually the feeling that most people get addicted to. That feeling is what makes people get addicted to things that seem terrible like tattoos, bungy jumping, or (if you're a certain kind of person) stealing things
I just wanna say this video helped me a lot, I got my first tattoo ever and sat through a whole 6 hours for a sleeve, and the mental part of just isolating the pain and telling myself “this is temporary pain, no one is murdering me, i want this art, it’s only this one small section of my body at a time” definitely helped (also watched Disney+ at the same time so🤙🏼❤️)
I'm 21, I'll be 22 in August of this year, and I just got my first tattoo yesterday at noon. It is a quote on my collarbone/shoulder and I LOVE IT! I've been trying to be extremely careful, I won't wear a bra strap over it and I wrap it when I sleep. I follow the aftercare instructions completely, but I'm so nervous I'm going to wake up one day and it will be ruined, or strangely, GONE. Lol. I definitely want more tattoos in the future, but I only want things that are very meaningful to me. My quote I got yesterday says, "Until God Opens Another Door, I'll Praise Him From The Hallway." It means so much to me, and has a lot of significance behind it. This video is actually a big help with managing any pain I may have over the next few days/weeks. Thank you for sharing this! By the way, you're beautiful!
What helps me is I try to guess which part of the tattoo they are doing in my head. Or I think about how much relief I get when they lift the needle off the skin lol so I just look forward to the next time they lift the needle
Just what I've seen while I've been the chair. And what I mean by not having a problem - they are able to sit still enough for the artist to finish without the artist wanting to take a few valiums themselves. Making faces and minor groans don't count.
It also depends on the body part, I've been fine sat through several sessions a piece on leg arm sides feet etc ok till backpiece... back is a shit time lol
Stretched ears are gorgeous same as any body mod if you understand it 👌 also I'm not sure she gives a shit if you like her ears or not, I mean they ain't your ears so what does it matter to you 😜
Mrs Pigeon same here! 😁 crazy nervous, 1st tattoo in 3 hours from now, on ribs and not a small one, neotraditional knife with heart and brain(matching with my best friend)
I turn 18 in 6 months and I plan on getting my first tattoo, if anyone knows truce by twenty one pilots I'm getting "the sun will rise and we will try again" because it has a very deep meaning to me. I struggled with suicidal thoughts a lot and I sometimes still do. But I just think "tomorrow is a new day, i can conquer it" so when I heard those lyrics I knew that was exactly what needed to be on my body forever. I know a lot of people regret tattoos they get at 18 but I honestly don't think I will because it has a deep meaning to me
hey I know this is random and you posted your comment a long time ago but I'm turning 19 next month in September and I might get twenty one pilots lyrics too. "there is no distraction to mask what is real. " from car radio. when I saw you were getting lyrics from trees and the story behind it , it made me super happy .
I know this is super late but I commend you and anyone battling with suicidal thoughts. I struggled with those for a long time. If you ever need to just talk when those feelings overwhelm you, you can call this 24/7 line I've called. 1-877-843-4567 the people there are so chill and layed back. They do dream interpretation too! :-)
Great advice! I just sat through a three and a half hour session on my shoulder yesterday, and I found that even just getting into an in depth conversation with the artist, or someone in the shop works really well for me. There were times where I kind of forgot I was getting tattooed because my mind was somewhere totally different. For the times that I couldn't forget about that pain. I made faces rather than tensing up (not just "pain" faces). It seemed to help too. Staying positive is huge. Every so often I would look over (while his machine was up) to see his progress, and remember exactly why I was there. Just watching how beautifully it was coming together was amazing and made it easier.
I just got my upper stomach done the other day and it was definitely the most pain I've felt while getting tattooed. something silly I found that helped me was that I started counting whenever my artist was doing a line or filling in a certain spot. He'd start tattooing and I'd say to myself one thousand, two thousand, three thousand etc.. it was a way to distract myself from the pain and like I said it sounds silly but it's something that occurred to me and I did find helpful
Girl this video is so accurate oh my god, yesterday I was getting a coverup tattoo on my arm and as soon as she hit the little ditch in my elbow I started laughing and shouting "you're such an amazing person! I'm so happy I came!" Inevitably it made my artist laugh, it made me laugh, and it made the whole thing much more bearable. If ya don't laugh you're gonna cry haha so just laugh it off and it'll be over before you know it.
“This pain is not dangerous. I am not dying.” Wished I watched this before getting my leg tatted yesterday, because I hollered and cried for the last 4 hours. I will keep this in mind when I go back for my second session. Appreciate your time and energy🫶🏿
My stomach tattoo was by far the worst. The pain was so bad, I looked at myself and said, "Okay, I don't need any more tattoos." But a year later I have my next appointment booked and I am super excited :) Thanks for the tips
I'm completely destroying every tattoo video on RUclips rn bc I'm getting my tattoo this Saturday and I saw someone say it feels like a cat scratch and sunburn and TBH I really enjoy when people slap my sunburn lmao that pain feels good for a second :)🙄😂🙂
pasta sald xtrapasta I never got it done!! I ended up burning my wrist with a curling iron in literally the exact spot where I wanted it on my wrist I was so upset. Haven’t gotten it yet lol
shelby g good dont thats the most painful part your wrist and crease in forearm I just got mine 2 days ago & THAT SHIT HURT SO BAD I was in pain all 3 hours I couldnt even finish I said I would go back to finish the rest
What worked for me was really just being in the moment and accepting the pain. I concentrated on the movement of the needle and how it felt on my skin. I also kept thinking that it would be over soon! Breathing in and breathing out slowly is very important.
Thanks for the tips! I'm designing my own tattoo. It will be legend of Zelda related with a dog paw on top. And with a watercolor splash on it 😀 I want this because I lost a dog name Link. He was my whole world for his 15yrs. And I know I'm going to feel pain, but the idea of having a piece of him on me is what I'm going to focus on. Plus the pain of losing a loved one can never compare to tattoo pain. 🐾😢
I'm getting a portrait of my dog who got out down last weekend in five days and I'm so scared. But I'm just gonna think about my dog and that he was in pain for so long with cancer so I can be in pain for two hours. I miss him and am just gonna try remember the pain of losing him and how much better I'll feel after getting it
Might sound "posey", but I personally chose to embrace the pain. It's part of the journey and the price you have to pay to get adorned with ink. Makes you appreciate the whole thing a lot more.
I viewed your video the day of getting my tattoo and I wanted to chime in and thank you for the advice you gave. I handled it really well, thanks to you sharing that you would say to yourself "Ok, this pain is not going to kill me." Everytime it got a little on the excruciating side, I would say that to myself and it would get me through and the pain would lessen for me. My tat had a good amount of shading, The actual outline was putting me to sleep and was actually relaxing. My friends thought the outline was the worst, but it only goes to show how everyone handles their tattoo sessions differently. Again, thank you so much!
I put on music and pretend I’m on the second act of my world tour 😂 by the time my artist is done I’m already on my 8th act singing a duet with Beyoncé 😂
During my last tattoo session, I watched some of my favorite Disney movies. And I don't know if anyone else gets this same effect, but I always get like a rush of endorphins and chills all over my body during those epic scenes where the music swells and you're just in awe of what's happening on the screen. For example, I watched Atlantis, and the two scenes that made me feel this were where the giant sub launches and sinks into the ocean for the first time and when they finally come up on Atlantis and you see that wide landscape establishing shot. Both scenes have gorgeous cinematography and animation and of course, beautiful chill-inducing orchestral score. And I swear, when I was watching those scenes, I felt a rush of endorphins that basically numbed the pain for at least a few minutes. It seriously helped me a lot!!! So if you ever get a feeling like that from a movie or series, or certain music, I would definitely recommend consuming that while you're getting tattooed. The rush will give you a short break and you'll almost forget your being tattooed.
One good tip is to take sweets with you and while you're getting a tattoo, eat them. I don't have any tattoos, I don't know the feeling but I'll get some in the future. Thank you Katrin for the advises! I'll use them in the future! P.S. Katrin, you're awesome! 😉
I always do this - most artists want a break after an hour or so of hunching over you, I find, and it's a good time to have a bit of candy to boost the blood sugar. Works for me every time! I got my most recent tattoo nine days ago on my inner upper arm.
I would love to get a small tattoo, but I'm am a huge whimp and have a very low pain tolerance. I think I would be so embarrassed and feel sorry for anyone who had to tattoo me lol. I thought maybe sucking on boiled sweets might help? But idk
WolfCrossing idk if i'm to late but i thought i could help. I have very low pain tolerance i was and still am the type of person to cry from a scrape but i got a tattoo with that and also being terrified of needles i just prepared for it by every time i was hurt before i got my tattoo making myself calm down and deal with it till it was over like i would have to when i got my tattoo. By the time i got to my tattoo i was prepared and had blown the amount of pain it would be so totally out of proportion that it was nothing and i just sat there and even watched the whole time didn't move at all and the lady said i was very easy to tattoo and i was as calm and still as my brother who has a high pain tolerance. I cant guarantee you can do it but i think you probably underestimate what you can handle when your prepared for it. If you want a tattoo and you know you'll like it forever get it its worth it.
the laughing part you spoke about is such an incredible tip you gave out. replacing cortisol levels with serotonin levels is always brilliant! I've suffered all sorts of pain and I have to agree with you that laughter pays off... 💚🌹
I LOVE all of your tips! As someone who struggles with anxiety I use tips like these daily life and these are great ways to sit through a tattoo! I’m getting a sternum tattoo in a month 😬
I just got my first tattoo today on the back of my neck. It didn't hurt very much at all, but I was barely breathing so I almost passed out lol. BREATHE BREATHE BREATHE!!! My artist was super nice and bought me some soda to help me not faint.
I mostly have my legs done and one of my arms, but for me it no matter how hard, I try to relax and focus on the pain and what the specific sensations I'm feeling are besides the pain. It really helps. The vibration of the tattoo machine always helps me also. It sounds lame, but it's always kind of calming to me to feel that underneath the pain.
Great tips. Redheads were shown to need extra dosing of local anesthetic in a study of dental pain management nearly twice as often, btw. It's been in the back of my mind to get a certain tattoo, a first tattoo, but now, nope, not now, not never, not gonna.
I'm getting my first in a couple of weeks. I'm kinda scared but at the same time I know what its lik3 but I'm getting it on my wrist and I'm more scared of the pain at the top of my wrist where my hand meets any tips?
I just finished my shin and all I can say is that tattoos hurt. Period. Some tattoos hurt more than others, some sessions hurt worst than the last but they ALL hurt. Even if it's only a little.
I have 2 tattoos, each in a very painful spot. I felt that it helped to talk or have a conversation with someone in the room. It puts your mind on the conversation rather than the pain.
Got a huge chest piece just 2 days ago.. and it didn't hurt that bad at all, even on the sternum. I walked in the tattoo shop prepared for the worst agony my mind could picture and imagine and guess what... i almost fell asleep while getting tattoed. This really proves the fact that pain is very, very different for everyone. With that being said what really helped me was the awareness and total control of my breathing, i didn't tense up a single second throughout the whole process, and i focused on keeping a regular and deep breathing. Btw excellent tips 😊. DON'T LET THE FEAR OF PAIN HOLD YOU BACK, OF COURSE YOU'RE GONNA GO THROUGH SOME "AGONY" BUT THAT'S NOTHING YOUR DETERMINATION CAN'T OVERCOME, AND IN THE END IT'S GONNA BE WAAAY WORTH IT😊
Romancedolan of course it hurt. This is a video about tattoos and pain. It's a needle quickly stabbing your skin repeatedly, and not just the top of your skin. Your wrist has hardly any flesh/fat and close to bone. Yes, it hurts.
Well depends on ur thresh hold of pain but I’ve gotten both wrist done and she’s right if u will relax it helps but it’s not unbearable pain it burns more than anything
I think I'm more afraid of I'm doing something I've never done before than how much it'll hurt. I'm getting my first tattoo in a couple weeks. My pain tolerance is usually pretty high for most things, but I'm still a little nervous. This video really helped put me at ease. Thank you!
For me, the best way of coping with pain when getting tattooed is not even to accept the pain, but to welcome it! It sounds a bit crazy, but when I was getting my last tattoo last week and thought I couldn't handle it anymore, I tried thinking "Yeah, pain! Pff, is that all you've got? Give me more! Yeah, thats great!" and stuff like that instead of "I don't want to/can't do this." It worked so perfectly!! :D Like, really great. It's similar to your last point, but more quiet, so you can do it even if you don't know the person who is tattooing you and they won't think you're crazy :D Doesn't have to work for everyone, but it worked great for me, so I higly reccomend to at least try it! :D :)
When I had my 8hour back tattoo done I watched Netflix/RUclips and concentrated on my breathing. I'm a right wimp and have a really love pain threshold. But relaxing, breathing, and distracting myself really helps. That and thinking of how amazing it's going to look when all the pain is gone! It's going to be well worth it!
Your tip about the "fake laugh" really works for all sorts of pain! I was in the middle east and had to spend some time in the 100F+ heat. I stepped outside and literally couldn't breathe, then just started laughing at how hot it was. It helps! Thanks for all your tips
Totally feel you. The tattoo on my tummy hurt really bad. That was over 10 years ago. I just got another on my leg, it hurt but I tried to relax and 'isolate' my leg like you described it. And it really did help!
My guy was tattooing me on my higher stomach today and I was like where’s the blood? He’s like you ain’t got any left and I just started laughing hahaha
just got my first tattoo today, its a large piece spent two and a half hours in the chair and i found making the artist laugh made me laugh, fake laughing and enjoying helped! it was a great time. cant wait to do the color and shading!
I'm 16 and my mom is considering letting me get a small bear tattoo on my back. I know most are going to say noooo you're to young!! You aren't smart enough to know what you want! But I want this tattoo because I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease at 8 years old I was so sick for years and I had to become stronger and more mature. I'm very mature for my age and basically act and think like an adult. This tattoo would be like a brand of courage and strength. What do all of you think??
I would say don't get a tattoo this young not because you're dumb or not mature, but just from my (and what I think is many others) experience which is that the person I am now is completely different from the person I was when I was 16. After going away to college I changed completely. I feel like a new person now and I'm glad I don't have a permanent marker of who I was then because I much prefer the person that I am now. BUT that being said, if this tattoo is something that is going to help you deal with something hard, and isn't taking over half your body, your mom is cool with it, and you honestly really want it, then go for it. I've never gotten a tattoo to help me deal with something or that has such a powerful meaning, so I can't tell you what that's like, but also talk with your mom. She probably has a lot more life experience and certainly knows you a lot better as a person. Sorry this was long I have mixed opinions lol
I know this comment is 1 year old but still. I don't regret the tattoo I got done at 16, however I regret the artist I went to because the quality is shit now that I know what a good tattoo actually is. So... I hope you got your tattoo done at a nice place. Also hope you liked the experience (if you ended up getting it)!
I got a tattoo on my calf today and your suggestions worked! Especially the breathing one. I would also suggest checking in with you body to see if you are tense. If you are breath and relax, that helps with the pain.
quick question, i am getting a Pokemon tattoo and my family is against it. they dont mind tats to an extent but they still have an opinion. should i still go through with it? im doing it cuz i love anime n pokemon n such. also i am doing it to cover up my first tat that is my ex marriage date.
Katrin Berndt , thanks i even explained to them that this tat represents me and my two bros... i wish i can show u what I have planned, oh and dont worry, i showed the artist a picture i found on the Internet and he said he will make it better. he is going to redraw it and he also took a pic of thw part of my body so he can show me an example.
Awesome! :) Remember that you never have to justify your tattoos to ANYONE other than yourself. If you want a sausage tattooed JUST 'cause you want to, that's as okay as getting something super meaningful. :)
Katrin Berndt i just subscribed to u today and watched a few vids from you... I love the stuff u put in your vids. this will be my third tat and my first biggish one. im cool excited and nervous. also my fiance dont know, cuz i want to show her my past is gone and with my ex marriage covered we can get married with nothing holding us back.
If you believe it will bring you happiness, go for it!! You don't have to care about the people around you and what they think about your choice on your body, even if they are close to you. You will know what is best for you, even if those around you have their best intentions in trying to guide you in regards to that.
I'm getting my FIRST tattoo on 60% of my whole underarm and I'm terrified of the upcoming pain. I know, I'm stupid for choosing a big ass tattoo as a first but my tattoo-artist was so inspired she designed a bigger motive and I love it. I want it. I'm going to get it. Now, I think of myself as being pretty much resistant of pain but STILL I am so so so so so so afraid of the pain that awaits me of getting tattooed. This video helped me calming down, thank you so much.
Great tips! I have some techniques of my own can share to help anyone in need! My worst tattoo was my second- on and around the wrist (Intense "neverending" 6/10 pain) 1. Have something to drink without- with sugar. Buy a soda or something, so you can keep your blood sugar up (i like to zip it so it lasts over the whole session) 2. Have something else to focus on (Smalltalk with your artist, smartphone, maybe watch youtube videos?) 3. On the worst parts- breath. Focus on deep inhales and long outhales, or whatever you find work the best, just don't hold your breath.
I saw this video and only clicked on it because you look so damn familiar. I thought about it and you look just like the blond main character from Once Upon A Time
Not sure if you mention this since I just clicked on the video..numbing cream changed the game for me. I’ve gotten tattooed for 11 years and am about done. I would not have been able to make it much past my first one without it. Highly recommend it for anyone interested and that it works for. You can buy it bulk on eBay and it will last as long as you’re getting tattooed regularly like I have been.
Thank you for pointing out that tensing up might not be the best option! Its so logical: When you tense up, you are signaling your body that this is really bad right now, and that will release stress hormones which - tadaa - increase the pain you experience. So many ppl think that tensing up is good, when it actually makes things worse.
I've gotten my second tattoo 2 days ago on my thigh. The first one was almost 2 years ago, on my left side (ribs, side stomach, side boob kinda). Both took nearly 3h to get done. In general what helped a lot, especially in the last 45min or so, was to know that I handled it for like 2h which made me think "damn girl, you're a champ, you held your shit for that long, now it is only a little longer" and pep talking myself "you got it" "damn you didn't even make a peep". The tensing up part is so true, when it got a little worse I would try not to make weird faces, just deep breaths. Also talking to the artist about random things, for a while. By the way, your tattoos are beautiful, I'm subscribing to your channel :)
Literally want you said at 1:17 about disconnecting yourself from a specific body part! The "chopping it off" that's exactly what I do when I'm getting my blood drawn. To me that hurts what more than a tattoo. I thought I was the only one that thought that way. In a way you gotta surrender to the pain almost. Except it kind of
I'm no medical professional, but I take my anxiety medication (legally prescribed for my depression and anxiety!), before going for my tattoos. It swear it doesn't help with the pain, but it helps me stay calm. I have a full left arm sleeve.
although some areas you cannot look at when the tattoo is being done (back or neck etc) actually watching it being done sometimes helps. the fact you can see it and watching puts in the mindset of its not actually hurting it's just creating art. all about your mindset before and during getting it done. I've had 4 sessions on my ribs and believe me it's no walk in the park but I watched what I could and it helped.
I got my first "bigger tattoo" on my biceps a week ago and beforehand I asked the tattooist if she was fine with me skyping with my best friend while she was tattooing me. She didn't mind and so I spent over half of the outlines talking to my best friend, watching her face and hearing her voice over the sound of the needle and it really did help. I didn't really think about the tattoo anymore, ofc I still felt it but it was much more bearable.
This really helped me a lot! I fainted getting my first tattoo, but I don't want that expierence to stop me from getting more tattoos. Thank you so much!
Samantha Gelsthorpe I really want to get a sternum tattoo done but I'm so scared of the pain it would be my first tattoo! Any other advice you can give me ??
zoe alchemy i dont know cause i guess everybodys body is different and we take pain differently. go in there expecting it to hurt like hell. and even if it does its worth it. make sure you absolutely love the design dont be scared to ask them to change it. dont take any painkillers. just talk a lot during the tattoo. like think of memories and describe them so your brain is busy. that's what i did :)
I find always talking to my artist while they're working is a great way to not hyper focus on my tattos while I get them. Mind you, I only have two on my forearms but while waiting for that sweet burst of adrenaline to soften the pain if you don't focus? Makes it easier than if you're staring at the needle and knowing how much pain your really in. I tend to think the healing process hurts way more than actually getting the tattoo.
This video actually did help when I got my first tattoo. I also find that focusing on something else (usually something funny or weird) helps remove the pain as much as possible. The tattoo I'm talking about is an eastern dragon (Chinese, specifically) spiralling up my arm. It's mouth is open and it stops at my shoulder. It's a really nice tattoo.
I find you have to let go of the impulse to tense up. Once you can get through some painful lines of not tension, this proves u can relax through it and tell yourself/reward yourself for relaxing through the pain. Also, you are strong enough to relax through it so BELIEVE IT.
Got a 6 hour stint to get a sleeve done by one of the best in the world. First tattoo too, pretty sure I'll be fine since I've never had problems with needles but always good to have the coping techniques.
Also knowing that it's for a positive outcome it's a lot easier to bare. If you are in pain and you don't know why and maybe it's a serious medical condition then you get scared.
7:42 I was not expecting the jerking off joke. Cracked me up. My advice for pain. Breath through the outline and tell yourself over and over again that this is a part of your transformation and the new you is on its way. Then listen to the music or movie or audiobook that you and your tattooer decided on during the shading. Then if possible try to watch the needle fill in the color and highlights. For some reason watching that part makes it not really hurt. Also. I bring a bottle of bactene max and ask to be sprayed down during breaks.
For me the best thing is tension up really. It helps me a lot haha. Being relaxed isn't helping me at all. But you said everyone has their own way to handle the pain !
Thanks, this video really helped with my first tattoo. Although the shutting the part off didn't work it have me the idea of focusing on another part tapping my fingers together as gentle as I could. This was better than nothing. Worth it for the end result.
Something that helps me is thinking about bullshit from the past. I can zone out, and if it's a cringey thought or something that stirs up emotions, the pain of the tattoo can release that.
im just devouring every tattoo video on youtube rn, nervous as hell before my tattoo next week
Tijana Pusica it went well! Really happy with the result :)
Tijana Pusica got it on my forearm and it wasn't as bad as I expected. It stung a little bit in the beginning, but after awhile you really dont notice it that much! Maybe that's just me, but go for it!! You can handle the pain :))
Same but I'm getting a tattoo for Christmas, I'm busy for 3 weekends straight xD,
bushdidharambe I'm trying to get over my fear of the pain so I can get a tattoo.
The best way I have been about to describe the pain, for me, is like a cat scratch on a sunburn. So it hurts, but it's not unbearable.
For me the outline is like OMFG.
.next the shading, thats like OMFG. Then they wipe you with a this paper towel from hell that feels like its made of an alcoholic brillo pad full of broken glass... OMFG.
last but not least you open your wallet and then OMFG.
House Gremory pretty much spot on.
I like paper towel rub
The paper towel rub makes it not hurt for like twenty seconds
@@milliesaysokboomer im backtracking, i got my forearm filled yeaterday....and OMFG that rub would hurt bad
@@raulh5457 shite it's my turn for my forearm soon
I like the tip that you said "this is not dangerous pain". I'm going to try that, thanks!
Exactly wat I thought today I had a 3 hour sesh n the one thing that kept me going is...its not killing me in anyway
I thought this seemed helpful too!!!
@@yvngpoltergeist8778 I have an atleast 8 hour sesh on my sternum bc the tattoos big and because my artist is slow which I don’t mind but you can bet I’m lathering on a shit Ton of numbing cream 😭 so nervous
Ok I have a very strange technique :
1_ I count to 10, slowly.
2_ I count again, but this time I try to "see" the numbers, like they are giants numbers in the room.
3- I count again, but this time I try to imagine that the number are a certain color
4_ I count again, and this time I try to make the numbers do a certain move (and they keep their colors from the step 3), for example the 1 is jumping, the 2 is floating and so son...
5_ I repeat the steps, and I try to change the colors and the moves each time
I hope it's not too weird lol, but it worked really well with me :)
It also work if you want to calm you down if you feel anxiety coming up :)
That's an awesome idea! Counting helps for me too
+Mewesical I did half of my stomach, one side of my torso, and the piece was continuing on the back a little bit. We did 2 sessions of 5 hours and 1h of touch up a month later. I was really focused the whole time, I wanted the tattoo so bad :) (we did 3 smoke breaks)
I thought 5 hours was quite a long session :)
Aah ok i get it :) sorry English is not my first language ;)
I do this technique since I am 10/12 years old, it helps with anxiety, panic etc.. so I guess it works well because I'm used to it.
I have a 6 hour tattoo coming up in January.. I'm going to try this.
The tip on fake laughing etc, is actually completely real and totally helpful, guys. It does actually trick your brain.
This is what I used as a kid getting the belt, and it worked great. It did piss off the punisher though!!
Flirting back and forth with the tattooist also helps.
+Diana Murtaugh kinky
Indeed! I suffer from really heavy migraine attacks, especially in summer, and it even works on this. I just pretend I'm an actor and need to laugh for the cameras lol
LexiexLoco when ever I get my eyebrows waxed I laugh the entire time not even knowing why but it helps. My body just does it by itself I don't even have to fake laugh.
emilykay okay but the question at hand is why is ur picture an old picture of brookelle bones
I got tattooed for 3 hours this weekend and during the outline, I was like ''hahahahaha wow I forgot how easy this is'' then the shading came... the shading... yikes.
I feel you...
😥😥😥
I was told outlines hurt more ? 🤔 obviously I could be wrong
Kayleigh Ann depends on the shading technique
Thank god most of my first tattoo is just outline, no color lol. I like the lined shading look, so im going with that! Im getting it next week!
What worked for me is thinking how much I fancy the tattoo and that I love to have it over me and this is a magic moment between me and the artist and hell yeah! Reggae music during the session helped too!
+Bone Apaaart agreed! Except the part about reggae.... Not my cuppa ^^
I don't listen to it either but the tattoo artist likes it when we works and I realised it relaxed me. I think I have read that reggae affects the heart pulse and can relax you. Anyways! Greetings from Greece!
i'm not a particular fan of reggae either, but my tattoo artist also plays reggae music whenever she tattoos me and i could basically fall asleep every time
Tara H Fall asleep!? I tell you this music has the sound of weed!
omg I WISH I was the kind of person who could fall asleep during tattoos. I'm so jealous of people who can!
The people who say tattoos don't hurt most definitely only got a tiny infinity symbol or a letter or something tiny 😑
+Lucy Molloy haha ^^ I can say that most of my tattoos didn't hurt BAD until the 6th-7th hour. But they all hurt at some point for sure.
+Katrin Berndt 💘💘💘
Why do you say that? I've gotten a tattoo which is kind of thin but like 20cm long on my arm and I didn't feel any pain at all to be honest. As Katrin wrote and said in the very first seconds in the video, feeling pain is different for anybody. Just because you felt pain while getting your tattoo doesnt mean other people feel the same ^^
I disagree. Everyone's pain tolerance is different. I have the whole side of my neck tattooed and my chest as well. it didn't hurt.
Same here.
I do want to do that for my first tattoo, but I don't want to come across as rude :( Is it normal to do so?
Yes, its normal, just tell the artist that this is the way you cope with pain. And make sure he isnt affraid to tap you on the shoulder if he wants to get in contact with u, (For changing possition etc).
I love the sound the tattoo machine makes though. I do the opposite and focus on the humming sound it makes. takes away from the pain.
Is agree I'm 5 sessions in on my sleeve I go every weekend work on different spots and artist is super heavy handed but I blast music and sing the songs first session was 9 hours then 6 now just doing 3 hour sessions still sucks though
hard to feel pain when you're dead inside
Really derrick
whoa there danny
Let's all be dead inside
daniel hicks best comment still bro
This actually made me laugh so much
I start thinking about how my boyfriend lied 7 weeks ago & start plotting how I'm gonna start the argument. By the time I've got it all figured out, it's over 😊
Love this
😂😂😂😂😂
Lmaooo it’s still funny after two years lol
Thats some funny shit right there! xDD
+GrowingDownUnder you can't drink or get high before getting tattooed
+oojin geo it's a lot more complicated than that but that's part of it!!
yeah you can... but of course they make you sign a paper first. If you go drunk it will thin your blood so you should tell them if you're drunk...if you're high just don't tell them. Most artists will try be professional by making you sign the paper however they honestly don't care if you're drunk or high as long as you're not being an idiot or moving constantly
They will just apply vaseline as they are tattooing which will prevent as much bleeding
After giving birth to my son and the tearing etc, no other pain scares me now haha
I always get that panicky adrenaline feeling, which is often worse than the pain. 🙈
me too! but I try to calm myself down by thinking of how great the finished product will be
What gets me more nervous is the clean smell that you'd smell in a doctors office or hospital. Brings me back to when a doctor had to cut my arm open in front of me 😭
i get that as well as the urge to pee 😂
Did the collarbone tattoo hurt
lol i was doing the "not dangerous pain" thing during my dentist appointment yesterday
What helps me is I try to guess which part of the tattoo they are doing in my head. Or I think about how much relief I get when they lift the needle off the skin lol so I just look forward to the next time they lift the needle
I use the breathing method. Focus on your breath. Focus on breathing in and exhaling out and try to calm yourself.
98% of people handle tattoo discomfort without a problem. 2% don't. Until you get a tattoo you don't know which group you are in.
Haha great statistics. Have any sources on that? ^^
Just what I've seen while I've been the chair. And what I mean by not having a problem - they are able to sit still enough for the artist to finish without the artist wanting to take a few valiums themselves. Making faces and minor groans don't count.
I hope I'm 98
It also depends on the body part, I've been fine sat through several sessions a piece on leg arm sides feet etc ok till backpiece... back is a shit time lol
I'm sorry but all I can think about is that your ears look like Oreos lol
Snook Sniper I don't like the look of her ears.
j just got an oreo ad before the video...
Snook Sniper now i can't unsee it
Stretched ears are gorgeous same as any body mod if you understand it 👌 also I'm not sure she gives a shit if you like her ears or not, I mean they ain't your ears so what does it matter to you 😜
strawberry shortbread no one said they didn't like them. We just said they look like oreos. And oreos are awesome! So chill ya tities.
Watching tons of tattoo videos today as I'm getting one this afternoon... Nervous. 🙃
Mrs Pigeon how did it go?
Anna Mo Very well thank you, I love it! :D
how much did it hurt? D:
how did it go
Mrs Pigeon same here!
Elayna Marie oh what day in September? My bday is the 25th of september
the 20th!!
woah!! I want to get one too eventually "sometimes to stay alive, you gotta kill your mind."
I'm so happy I came!"
Inevitably it made my artist laugh, it made me laugh, and it made the whole thing much more bearable. If ya don't laugh you're gonna cry haha so just laugh it off and it'll be over before you know it.
That's hilarious!! "Please let me PAY YOU for this PLESANT experience!" Lol
"Im not dying" yes that should work for me lol
Hahah! I think it feels like someone scratching a mechanical pencil on your skin over and over ^^
Katrin Berndt how much does a wrist tatoo hurt ?x
shelby g how did it go?
pasta sald xtrapasta I never got it done!!
My vet science teacher was talking about when she got a tattoo on her rib area that it was so painful that half way through she started to sing/scream
And with a watercolor splash on it 😀
I want this because I lost a dog name Link. He was my whole world for his 15yrs. And I know I'm going to feel pain, but the idea of having a piece of him on me is what I'm going to focus on. Plus the pain of losing a loved one can never compare to tattoo pain. 🐾😢
I have a triforce on my hand with water color splashed on it! Lol
I'm getting a portrait of my dog who got out down last weekend in five days and I'm so scared. But I'm just gonna think about my dog and that he was in pain for so long with cancer so I can be in pain for two hours. I miss him and am just gonna try remember the pain of losing him and how much better I'll feel after getting it
For me, talking with the artist works the best for managing the pain. A good conversation etc
+Mewesical Well yeah but when you're getting a tattoo on arm or leg maybe it will work :)
I always do this - most artists want a break after an hour or so of hunching over you, I find, and it's a good time to have a bit of candy to boost the blood sugar. Works for me every time! I got my most recent tattoo nine days ago on my inner upper arm.
Mewesical
wouldn't say impossible, jolly ranchers melt in your mouth. went through a handful while I got my chest and ribs done
Relaxing is my biggest tip. Also, think of the outcome, what beautiful art you’ll have on your body, and how much you’ll love it.
I appreciate your honesty regarding "pain". Most people say that they hardly felt anything!
I just got my first tattoo today on the back of my neck. It didn't hurt very much at all, but I was barely breathing so I almost passed out lol. BREATHE BREATHE BREATHE!!! My artist was super nice and bought me some soda to help me not faint.
Want a back of my neck tattoo too when I turn 18
I mostly have my legs done and one of my arms, but for me it no matter how hard, I try to relax and focus on the pain and what the specific sensations I'm feeling are besides the pain. It really helps. The vibration of the tattoo machine always helps me also. It sounds lame, but it's always kind of calming to me to feel that underneath the pain.
I'm binge watching every tattoo video on RUclips because I'm getting a tattoo in 2 days. Super nervous!
Kaylee Garza how did it go?? :)
Real quick, that shade of lipstick looks phenomenal on you!
+Nessa thank you! It's my all time favorite ^^
I just finished my shin and all I can say is that tattoos hurt. Period. Some tattoos hurt more than others, some sessions hurt worst than the last but they ALL hurt. Even if it's only a little.
Yes my shin was torture. They all hurt but my shin was the worst
I have 2 tattoos, each in a very painful spot. I felt that it helped to talk or have a conversation with someone in the room. It puts your mind on the conversation rather than the pain.
I got my thigh tattooed and the only thing that helped was watching my artist tattoo. Otherwise I was in so much pain omg
DON'T LET THE FEAR OF PAIN HOLD YOU BACK, OF COURSE YOU'RE GONNA GO THROUGH SOME "AGONY" BUT THAT'S NOTHING YOUR DETERMINATION CAN'T OVERCOME, AND IN THE END IT'S GONNA BE WAAAY WORTH IT😊
I am getting my first tattoo on my wrist, is this a bad place to start of?
+Alisha Fairbairn nope
Okay, thank you for the reply😊
Alisha Fairbairn did it hurt
Thank you!
I'm getting my chest blasted tomorrow. All I'm gonna say is "Yeah, great line... WOO" :D
I should've watched this before i got my tattoo!
I was dying! Lol
It's going to be well worth it!
heyy beautiful do you have a video taking care of a fresh tattoo(?)
im sorry if this comment is anoying
sorry, this doesn't answer your question I'm a new subscriber and I don't know if she does, but qcknd on youtube has a lot of videos about tattoo care
+angela g i love her❤❤❤
and her channel❤
ive seen her after cares
but i would love to see katrins routin care too❤❤
Your tip about the "fake laugh" really works for all sorts of pain! I was in the middle east and had to spend some time in the 100F+ heat. I stepped outside and literally couldn't breathe, then just started laughing at how hot it was. It helps! Thanks for all your tips
you look like Elsa from frozen lol...
Totally feel you. The tattoo on my tummy hurt really bad. That was over 10 years ago. I just got another on my leg, it hurt but I tried to relax and 'isolate' my leg like you described it. And it really did help!
Bingewatching tattoo videos. Getting my first tattoo next month, it's a 7 hour session. Shit.
Anders Hermansen HOW DID IT GO?
Ballsy
Focusing on your breathing helped me, also talking to your tattoo artist helped me too
My guy was tattooing me on my higher stomach today and I was like where’s the blood?
I got my first one at 16 too and didn't regret it at all. I got a rose on my ankle lmao
Yes!!
Controversial method: my stomach rocker started to bug, I slapped the artist, who in turn knocked me out-- Came to, 'twas done.
Great tips! I have some techniques of my own can share to help anyone in need! My worst tattoo was my second- on and around the wrist (Intense "neverending" 6/10 pain)
1. Have something to drink without- with sugar. Buy a soda or something, so you can keep your blood sugar up (i like to zip it so it lasts over the whole session)
2. Have something else to focus on (Smalltalk with your artist, smartphone, maybe watch youtube videos?)
3. On the worst parts- breath. Focus on deep inhales and long outhales, or whatever you find work the best, just don't hold your breath.
Her earlobes look like oreos
having a good attitude going in and being excited really does make the difference pain wise
I felt zero pain and am also so very funny (no tattoos yet).
Sorry.
I got my sternum done yesterday and the positive thinking/pretending to be enjoying it thing worked soooo well for the tricky bits! THANK YOU
Samantha Gelsthorpe I really want to get a sternum tattoo done but I'm so scared of the pain it would be my first tattoo!
Samantha Gelsthorpe thank you I will try all these things 😓
I plan to get minimalistic tattoos with ONLY outline, no color or shading, shouldn't hurt as much as some I hope :P
SAME! getting a butterfly outline on my sternum and i’m sooo anxious but ready because it won’t be as bad as something that’s shaded
You are so on point regarding any pain on your torso/abdomen. That is always my first response to go into the fetal position with a heating pad.
This is really good advice! Even though it’s not tangible, it really works.
