The Movies came out in 2005, and still to this day, there hasn’t been another simulation game like it. All of the clones over the years failed to surpass the quality and creativity of making your own movie making simulation. Garbage like Filmmaker Tycoon, Moviehouse, and the recent Movie Studios Tycoon couldn't hold our interests and make us want to go back to this masterpiece.
After my first Award Ceremony in the Game i was hooked. I wanted to beat all the other studios back then but it was impossible. All in all it is a beautifull Sandbox expierience. Once again thanks for your work m8
I loved The Movies, I loved Black and White and Fable. I vividly remember so many mornings as a kid spent playing these games. I poured tons of time into The Movies the most and made TONS of movies, I wish I still had that 2gb compaq pressario so I could look at that shit.
Another banger as always brother, thanks for making this series. I grew up with the Lionhead games and went back and revisited black and white after watching your videos on them.
A constant reminder of why i love it when people do proper deep dives into games that didnt quite make the cut on the gaming radar, cause like ya said the articles that are sourced for the information here can be a nightmare to find on more obscure games. Also always important to showcase the mod scene, i loved this game another one of those games that wierdly made me wanna become a animator / ''filmaker'' i never quite got the hang of how to export stuff out and edit it all together. Also be carefull , speakin from expirience the Movies OSTs get claimed by the composer.
Haha yup I got hit with that copyright but since I’m not currently monetized I don’t mind. If the channel blows up enough I will eventually buy the licensing rights anyways just to cover eventually. I appreciate you!
I loved this game, literally played it ahead of doing a Film History module at university, and it gave me the basic knowledge that couldn't be replaced. And that's one of the most overlooked aspects of it IMO. The fact it takes you through history of film, in a pretty accurate way, lets you make these films, is amazing. Honestly, I didn't really even like the "making your own movies" element that much. I was absolutely smitten by building a studio lot, researching technology, keeping stars happy, etc. Also great work keeping up with some of the molyneux-isms. My favorite I can remember, if you need for future reference, was from the back of a PC Zone magazine. Molyneux and Steve Jackson used to get interviewed a lot during the early days of Lionhead in those magazines, and I vividly remember a claim about B&W creatures being able to learn to dance to your favourite song (which materialised as a WinAmp plug-in) and it learning your real name (which ended up being that weird feature where the game whispered names from your outlook address book). I'm sure there's more, and there were about a dozen interviews with Lionhead Studio heads in those PC Zone mags from 1999-2001
Dude, this is hilarious: loved it. Hope you don´t mind if I write the following on spanish but c´mon, it´s 2024: encontré tu canal hace poco during uno de esos rabbit holes con RTS. Recordé how much I loved the og black and white back in 2000 y realmente fue muy interesante escucharte parlotear al respeecto, también ese intento por limpiar un poco la imagen de ese gran mentirosos Molyneux. Siempre quise jugar the movies pero pensé que era like a knock off de the sims En fin, keep on doing it.
LOVED this game growing up. There are a couple cool mod sites still for this game with some good quality of life improvements. Another excellent video!
Holy shit, finally someone acknowledges this game. Probably my most played game as a kid, it's awesome. Sadly I can't get it to run on modern systems, tried it all, even going so far as to get a Windows XP VM up and passing the disc through with no luck. How'd you get it to work? I'd give my balls to play it again.
@@plebisMaximus there are some good resources for getting it running (with your legal copy of course 😉) on the myabandonware page for it. It didn’t take long at all to get it running.
Have a lot of great memories from the movies. Creating my own movies and harassing my friends and family to help out with voice acting was great. The movies were all awful beyond belief of course but it is a shame that they got lost when the website shut down.
My sister loved the game, but even 13 year old me found it to be horrifically buggy, and I was much more forgiving back in the day and even then I still found it almost unplayable. Same thing for The Guild 2.
@@erikmcswain We dig get it on release, and back then I never payed attention to that stuff. I only knew that the games my sister picked out were always super janky, lol.
@@planescaped mentioning The Guild 2 threw me for a loop though. That was another janky game I played a lot just because the feature set was cool even if it sucked lmao
@@erikmcswain Lionhead always had nice cheeky humor like that. But; there is a high change that it could be just coincidence; but the scene is like the mirrored version, it could be. Thanks for doing these Lionhead games recently, for some reason I replayed B&W again, however this... I cannot get to work (Im not on windows so im not making it myself easier)

Ohhh I been waiting for this one ! I spent so much time in this game as a kid . I think about it a lot and it's nice to see such an in depth review
It fills my heart for anyone to look forward to one of my videos. Thanks for watching!

Haven't watched it yet, but I'm pretty sure it's going to be a banger! I'll listen to it tomorrow at work 👍👍

That’s actually so cool. I did go to college for Television production and took some film classes myself.

Yes thank you for the vid
Man, I loved this game as a kid. I kinda wish a new-age version of something similar would come out.
Fun fact: you can use the arrow keys to move the Lionhead Logo while it fills up with the little cubes.
I actually never knew The Movies was a Lionhead studios game I'm just not very observant
I never played the expansion. I might revisit this game again.
I love the movies. I was hoping it would get a sequel that built upon its foundations and made something even better.
Great soundtrack too
So good!

Hmm maybe post release patches or stunts and effects made it less buggy because it ran surprisingly perfect even on windows 11.

So is that glass slide of the bar a reference to Town without Name ? Give me a drink, bartender

I just want everyone to know that I bought Black and White 2 back in the day. This is your fault
