0:35 periphery goes rock n'roll for approximately one bar
Ossian Willen i was about to write same thing ! Love this moment !
they play that a couple of times in that song. First time I heard that I was like "holy crap, we need more of that"
Ossian Willen haha yes that little double stop riff caught my attention. 😂😂👍👍👍
That’s the best part of the song
Hahaha i was about to say same thing. That desonant rock n roll rift
Imagine if a riff came out like this in the 80s. People would’ve absolutely lost their shit.
It wouldn't have, not in a million years. That's why Periphery are progressive metal and not just heavy metal
They wouldn't be ready for it, but their kids are gonna love it
fernandez underrated comment 😂😂
step 1: show a metalhead that been in prison for 35 years.
step 2: make sure its the first metal song he hears.
step 3: film it.
step 4: *profit*
@@JeremiahFernandez God yeah ! Let's get back in the car !
This is awesome Mark! Reptile is in a 9 way tie for my favorite track of the album
Brooks I see what you did there, since the album only has 9 songs
@@silasxaviertheprod.9734 Thanks for the explanation
Currently working on mixing some songs from P4 and P3 (maybe a few older ones too) to make THE ULTIMATE FAN ALBUM
@@silasxaviertheprod.9734 You area genius
Not surprising considering, in my opinion, it's the only good song on the album. In my opinion this album has nearly no depth. There are a couple ok songs but the level of writing periphery usually puts into their work doesn't seem to be here on this record. Still really enjoy this band.
Oh, hi mark
Oh Hi Johnny, I've never heard that one before.
How's your sex life?
I DID NAAAT
It’s booshet!!!
What a playthrough Mark, you seems to be the expert
Drop G: 56 gauge, 25.5 scale
Drop G#: 64 gauge, 26.5 scale
periphery logic
I have 60 gauge, 25.5 scale in the Drop C, and it becomes rambling when i drop my 6th string down to A. I wonder how can they play 56 gaude in the Drop G?
Jake was saying in a live stream that the evertune helped substantially but I’d figure a different picking form outta help a bit
@@unpreciousband same, in A it's still playable (dunno how bout playing live though), but i've noticed that new strings somehow feel MUCH tighter than old ones, to the point where a new set completely transforms how my guitar plays
I play this song with 25.5 46 guage
this song is NOT drop G. Its just D standard with a G instead of a D.
That track will leave its Mark in Perpihery's history.

Mark Holcomb writes the best riffs in modern metal. Hands down.
i'm pretty sure misha writes them and mark plays them but i could be wrong.
they're both composers I suppose
@@artshayler8747 They all write equally, but Mark writes all the sick shit mostly lol
I'd say it's a 3 way tie with Keith Merrow and Wes Hauch
@@artshayler8747 no ur just wrong
I'm glad this was the opening song
Same. It summarizes what to expect from the rest of the album fairly well

lol so left field right? its the Texan in him.

God what a great cover. This guy could easily be in Periphery no doubt!

That pinch at 5:44 is so gnarly. I always love that part when it comes around
Daniel Seale hell yeah dude same
I have difficulty making a sound like that on my guirar
Yass!
It sounds like it might be a double pinch. I hear a major 3rd before he bends it up, which would make sense if it's the 4th and 5th string.
So is that two different guitars doing them at once or once guitar producing two at the same time. If it's the later how does one do that?
Kinda hope was doing a playthrough of It's only Smiles but honestly if they sold a DVD with them playing the album. would 1000% buy it.
Me too
So you'd buy ten of them?
@@PorkchopSandviches just ten? Please, i will spend all my money on it.
0:33 when you go from a pinch harmonic to a blues/rock type lick 😱🤯
Ya the pinch harmonics on this track are friggin crazy

Natural skill and years of practice
@@behindthen0thing No doubt about that. It just still amazes me.
He's a nice guy too
Wow you covered this faster than Nik Nocturnal.
On Blood Eagle, Nik was faster than Misha.
Who?
Daniel Marino-Austin A guy who covers songs stupidly fast. He streams himself learning songs in under an hour.
@@reidgowan2670 he's a tryhard
Yooooooooo. Hahahahahaha
The first heavy riffs are my favorite riffs I have EVER heard. And as everyone points out, that subtle blues lick in there is PERFECT
For the love of Stan, let there be Nolly playthroughs for this album and the rest to come too 🤘🏻🙏🤘🏻
I hope they will play it at every gig.
This song is a masterpiece.
I guess it's too complex to just play it on every concert.
Ha because Bleed isn't played at every Meshuggah show based on complexity right?
I think it’s a bit too long to play at gigs, so they’ll probably only play the first half of the song. (The half played in this cover).
@@tuckerdrums3514 im going to see them in March and it would be a total bummer if they didnt play through the entire song, my favorite part of this song is the SOLO

It’s cause he wrote it lol
Amongst all the incredible playing and phrases, the one that hit me the most (and continues to make me smile) is the 80s style slide at 0:35
Same, love it. Also reminds me ever so slightly of BTBAM's Disease, Injury, Madness solo.
This song just screams haunted shores and I love it
Sergio Diaz surprised I don’t see more of this comment. Couldn’t agree more.
This and Sentient Glow both reminded me a lot of Haunted Shores
brothercartman sentient glow is an actual haunted shores track but this new mix sounds mad
@@martinherrera7991 not surprised lol
Most of the riffs are marks and mishas (who ARE haunted shores) so I’m not surprised.
I love Marks riffs so much. They have the perfect amount of color and movement in them. For sure one of my favorite modern players🙏🏻
I think he's one of the best for sure.

That opening riff is simply the best piece of music I’ve ever heard.
The opening riff is definitely my favourite on the record
Mine too. It sounded like a darker, more evil Intervals riff
I'm in love with it
Honestly I think that its my favorite riff from everything I heard in music so far, its heavy, it begins with some dark ambience, gets kind of rock n roll and blends into an epic chord progression, you have this conversation between the low and high note parts, chord and note choices are absolutely brilliant, rhythm is outstanding, it fits the song perfectly and its somehow not too over the top, you can still have vocals and drums over it and they wont be drowned. All in all, an absolutely amazing riff, not even the best work from riffmasters like Tim Henson can compare, its just wow
0:35 favorite part of the whole song
I already can't watch this without hearing the vocals in my head
Periphery... How u dis good?
Mark, that bluesy double stop at 00:36? Amazing. No vocal track sure helps it all stand out. There's a lot of variety just in that verse alone. Well done.
Just listened to the full album... like 5 times in a row!!!
Man.. wow... such varieties!!!
"Crush" is my favorite!
By what I can tell I think the tuning for this one is G-G-C-F-A-D.
Also love when he does the "WOO!" with the harmonic xD
This song is so well put together. Even though there are about a billion riffs that sound completely different, it feels cohesive. Excellent work Periphery.
0:31 love that riff with the old school rock n roll style slapped in there at the end 👌
Here's something sorta funny. Go look up the interactive tab on ultimate guitar (possibly other sites too), one that will play the tab. Start the video. Then at just the right moment (about 0:10 right when the guitar comes in), hit play on the tab so the video and tab are synced. Now, for the fun part. Mute the video (but not the tab) and watch Mark play midi guitar. :) The tab is perfectly synced for the entire video. Kinda hilarious... or at least mildly amusing late at night. :)
thats why i love periphery you got Djent, Great Classical instrumental, Rock N roll, so Many feeling in one 1 songs
Any band not named Periphery would have gotten 5 songs out of this one song.... This is why I love you guys. Such brilliant musicians that it works.
And here we see another example of why Mark is my favourite guitarist.
Hard to choose but not a bad choice
I think he's the best guitarist in Periphery.
I just can't understand why would someone dislike this already. What's wrong? Jealousy? Literally there's nothing bad to not like. The album is already a highlight of periphery and this song is one of the most historical pieces this band has ever put out..
Well done! I really love your ideas when it comes to songwriting
Dat guitar tone! Mark is a perfect guitarist!
This one will be fun to learn. I sense spaghetti strings
GGCFAD I believe is the tuning
@@therobforte957 yeah, I think that's it. I think it should be playable using a 7 string tuned to Drop G. It would be exactly that tuning plus the low D
@@EduRenesto We just covered it with 7s! We made tabs you can download as well in the description: ruclips.net/video/u1c1eyjv8U0/видео.html

@@PangaeaRiffs thank you *so much*! Definitely gotta check it out when I get home. I was dying for the tabs!
0:36 that riff does so fucking much for the two times it's played, I love finding shit like that in their songs. Such a good addition
Mark is such an incredible guitar player... I mean... that’s obvious... but god damn, he is so versatile and his riffs are out of this worlds. I wonder what his main influence was and _when_ he started writing these kinds of riffs.. brilliant. My Holcomb SE is one of my babies
My favorite track from the album ❤
I’ve decided to learn this on guitar, I’ll check back in 30 years with an update.
How's it going
Im sitting in my dorm watching this playthrough as I dread finals, as soon as 2:45 hit, the sun poked through the sky. It was magical
For those interested the tuning for this track is AWESOM. Add an E for 7-String.
LOL
The pinch harmonic bend at 0:47 is the greatest thing ever
Ok so there’s this girl in my English class that literally looks exactly like mark but if his face was planted onto a high school freshman and it bothers me how much y’all look alike
Oh and great job on this symphony of a song too
Marry her and make little Mark lookalike clones, lol ;)
LOVE the classic rock inspired riffs in this track fuck yes I need to hear more of that from periphery. Spencer has the perfect voice for a classic rock inspired track as well.
I can't name a better band than Periphery, since 2011.
Still awesome, still sick as usual.
I wouldn't say better. But i think Polaris at least matched them
@@blakekillganon846 lol not even close. Polaris is not even the best in metalcore which is where they are categorized.
Silent Planet is very good as well :)
Animals as Leaders have been better than Periphery since 2016.
@@blakekillganon846 Polaris sound like shit, I know quite a few people who know them IRL, whether it's through mutual friends or working with them, apparently they're REALLY up themselves for the most part, I also saw them years back totally ignore all their fans reaching out to talk to them a couple years ago outside a venue, then they tried speaking to me, someone who doesn't like their music? Zero respect for them in the slightest
I like how Mark´s style is always improving. Unbelievable songwriting right there
This knocked my socks off.
and then back on again
Really nice riffs
1:19 Holy markaroni that palm muted G is br00tal like stan himself
UUUGHH how delicious aren't Mark's riffs and chord structures? Could listen to them all day.
Could I get an instrumental version of the Mark Holcomb PRS?
yes.
I've listened to this album every day since it came. Unreal.
Nice cover. No where near as good as how the guys in Periphery play it lol. Maybe one day you’ll get there kid
Terry Crews this joke isn’t funny anymore. shits been posted for 10 years now.
shadowtroop121 but how do you really feel?
😂
Damn terry, I dont know if you see my comments, but this I think is the 5th time I habe came across you on youtube in the past 2 weeks.
Wow! This is a great cover. This man sounds just like the guitarist from Periphery. He should join them
Sick! Just, f*kin SICK! I would LOVE a guitar tutorial video from one of you guys explaining how things like the riff at 3:14. Always wanted to know how those little chaotic runs work.
I have no words! Every guitar age has its understated genius; go ask a kid who Larry Carlton is! For me Holcomb is this guitar age's understated genius. Low key mahfkn assassin!
Really good point and I 100% agree.
Larry Carlton was the best guitarist Steely Dan ever had
Listened to this again today. It is amazing how clear sounding your guitar is even tuned that low and it's not muddy at all.
I have his signature model but mine doesn't do that when I play it 🤔
swear to god the most satisfying thing to see is Mark playing around the neck, with such exquisite delicacy and precision.
0:36 isn't that "the Lick" of Hard Rock music? :D
Might as well be haha. Hard rock/ blues-y lick found in soooo much shit. I can't see anyone disagreeing.
2:50 If you listen closely, you'll hear the lyrics pop up in your head like magic!
Damn Mark's riffs are tasty... I love those weird chords he uses... And his technique is beautiful... Going up and down that fretboard and just throwing in those fingerbender chords with that speed... It's very Randy Rhoads..
I cannot emphasise how much I love this instrumental!
I don't know why, but the song is blocked in my country along with most of the album. I'd love to hear the whole song. Sounds amazing!
Mark has the best balance between intensity and fluidity I have ever seen, hats off man! Also to everything else on the album honnestly
Literally will be so happy if someone can give me accurate tab for the tapping parts at 3:27!
I discovered Periphery days after Michael Jackson died ironically enough. Watching a lot of his videos to remember him and dealing with the lost at that time, and randomly a video of an MJ cover popped up from Misha. been hooked ever since!!!! hahaha!!! 10 years!
Mark is the best guitarist in Periphery. Don't hate me ;)
Deathbrewer I agree, if you’re not counting Nolly 😜
I’ve always preferred Jake for his melodic style of playing
Mark has some really nasty riffs like mile zero and well this but misha will always be my favorite
I feel like mark is the best riff writer in periphery, but I think that misha is slightly better of a technical player and writes better solo’s, but everyone cuts it close to each other in this band which is what makes them so amazing
100% don't get me wrong Jake and misha are amazing in their own right but man theirs just so about makes playing that will always blow me away he's definitely my favorite guitarist in general since he come on the scene when he joined joined periphery back in 2012
My favourite track from the album. Spencer really pulling his strings in this track. His voice has matured so fucking well. Fucking love you guys
It's amazing that they let you upload those nasty riffs, now I get why I can't see the other vids in Italy
I like how the amp starts out in front then Mark takes the lead, it's neck & neck throughout but finally the amp wins. The music suits the race too. Well played! #guitarolympics
The original is blocked in my country, glad I can see at least this
I'm obsessed with this album already
That is one if the best songs of the 21st century
And this is why I love you guys at Periphery.
Man I'd love to learn to play this. Such a killer track. Love the album boys 🤘🏻
You can do it wait for a tab and learn in slowly not in their most technical songs
Will Vaughn 6.3 yeah I’ve learned both Prayer Position and Scarlet all the way through. This one is a little crazy. Still haven’t learned the whole thing
kenconify right? I really love his technique though
Mark has the calmest picking hand I've seen on a guitarist. Just amazing.
Check out Wes Hauch. His playthru of As the Crow Flies. Prime shit
Love the two prs guitars in the background makes it look he's on a prs throne lol
1:48-2:00. What do you call those little 4 string plucks/strums? Done to perfection. It's the little things Mark does that make me love his guitar playing so much.
NO WAYYYY MY FAVORITE SONG EVER
There's so much variety in the verses, I can't even figure out where each phrase ends and a new one begins.
We really need part 2 with his solo...
Seeing Mark playing just give a hell of an inspiration to drop the hell of my guitar tuning and have the best time of my life
P u s s y.
Djentelmen, this is it.
Really impressed by the tone on that guitar, the clarity of the chords in this song is impressive
Be careful with the riff at 5:40 it has the potential to end the universe
