"The music for ‘High Plains Drifter’ initially came from a Flamenco piece I had written. It was a two-and-a-half-minute piece, and I really liked it, but it was one of those riffs that would be hard to integrate into Metallica. I knew I wanted to do something with it, even though it came out spontaneously. I had been sitting outside messing around with a Flamenco acoustic guitar I’d just bought, and it flowed out in the moment. I was determined it would have a life. It would have its moment.” - Kirk Hammett

kirk is not only a metalhead, he's an overall amazing musician
and an amazing person...such a boss 👏🏿
Don't forget weed head.
Kirk really needs to release more solo stuff like this because god damn this is amazing, he’d be such an amazing solo artist
Solo around 4 minutes is living proof that the Kirk from the first few Metallica records is still there. What made Kirk great on those records was his profound sense of MELODY. With these more recent Metallica records where it's "let's just record your first take" he doesn't have time to develop the amazing melodies he ultimately comes up with. Nice that on his solo record he can do that.
Interesting to read. Im a long time fan and never needed that proof from Kirk. Not when his solos are ripping on Death Magnetic and Hardwired ... ripping, like they were back in the day. Kirks solos become more melodic, in general, later on as well and theres so many examples of that... not so much the first few albums. I respect how you hear music but from my eyes... your comment is ridiculous and I dont understand it. I also take nothing away from Kirk's soloing around the 4 minute mark.
This is all Kirk on guitar. The drums are programed in. Not sure it could be Rob on bass. There's definitely Metallicas production on this but with Kirk's approval and sounds

bro I'm sorry to tell you but Kill'Em'All and Ride The Lightning Solos where 90% written by Dave Mustaine...
Not enough people are talking about Portals. Absolutely breathtaking music.
I’m happy for Kirk. I think all Metallica fans know what the dynamic in the band is like, so it’s great that he’s able to express himself freely with this project and scratch that creative itch.

Let me get this straight. Does Kirk Hammett need permission from Metallica to do his own stuff? Well, this piece of music is really great.
This sounds like who Kirk is on the inside. We all know he’s got a beautiful heart.
Yeah, but I'm not reading 2 thousand comments.

There are songs that clock in under 3 minutes and feel like they last an eternity. Then there are songs like this one that are nearly twice as long and feel like they're over in the blink of an eye. Really, really dig this song.
How kirk composes his songs makes you feel an urgency to come back again to listen to his music. There is so much passion in Kirk’s musical artworks, which makes you feel connected to them, and that’s how Kirk takes the top spot as my favourite guitarist.
👌😀
so true
Kirk is the reason im playing and the reason im still happy in hard times This man is a legend and will forever be number 1 👏🏿
I'm not a Metallica fan much at all, but I have to give Kirk props for the Morricone inspired music that he brought to life and the cinematic journey he just took us on!
Well this isn't that different to a lot of their stuff so... It just has some pad sounds added which is about the only new thing
The soul of Kirk. It speaks right to the heart.

Nice, so beautiful. We missed such natural songs, not inorganic. i heard little western, little metallica, little ethnic, little "die die my hand..:)" you are a part of metallica's soul. Thank you..
I'm not the only one that noticed a hint of the "Die By My Hand" riff!
@@thezonaiarchitect i had heard in an interview that he wrote this riff when he was 16 years old. And might be the first. I guess such a meaning may be hidden.
@@thezonaiarchitect I noticed it too. I was watching the Moscow 91 performance of Creeping Death earlier today and noticed Kirk had a huge grin on his face when the main riff started... that must have been a milestone in his career, all those fans cheering for his masterpiece!
This song reminded me of "to tame a land" by iron maiden
Hahahahahhhaah
It's great when talented musicians who belong to well-known bands dare to leave their comfort zone and fly alone.
And are actually allowed to by the lead singer of said band.
@@JasonBellisle sadly Jason wasn't allowed
@@lstefan9607 Metallica is pretty much retired. Big difference. Kirt Waited how long?
@@JasonBellisle Difference is Jason wanted to be in another band. Kirk is solo.
I wish he would have started doing his own thing a LONG time ago. Never even thought about it honestly, but Kirk should have been doing other stuff for a hell of a long time.
Kirk, many of us have loved your music for decades, and deeply appreciate your contribution to Metallica and the world of music. Happiness and wishes to you, brother.
I am legit in awe that Kirk has yet to do some sort of soundtrack or score to a movie because holy crap, the build up and the pay off is so good! Kirks always been such a humble guy and i am certain that he has so many ideas that he would love to share with the world!
hearing this i feel like not letting kirk in on the songwriting in metallica for all these years was a terrible idea. i mean this song is great, and so emotional too. it feels fresh. his solos have been legendary, but i'm glad we get to see this side of him now. he's often overlooked by non musicians, but he's an essential part of metallica's music too.
What do you mean? He's written tons of riffs for Metallica. He wrote the main riff for "Enter Sandman" and, like Jason, was given even more freedom on Load/Reload.
@@feebypeels2883 well, that's true. i understand that the song evolved from a riff he made, but it's not the exact same riff. what i mean is that the songwriting for every mayor album was dominated by hetfield-ulrich. even if they took or worked ideas that the others had from time to time, they were generally "left out" of the process. hammett refers to this on the some kind of monster documentary. he contributed, yes, but more on the solo department than in the process of writing the whole songs.
Usually people think of Lars and then James as the brains of Metallica, but Kirk is like the kind mother that sacrifices himself and his rights to keep the family together. Had it not been for Kirk, they would’ve split up long ago!
He didn’t have a writing credit on hardwired, lost his phone that had many riffs on it. I think the next record will definitely have more Kirk written riffs.
@@UCJInlzu1DhjQOOc3omg0FtQ Thats not exactly how it works in Metallica. Lars has flat out said every band member can contribute riffs and ideas, then the band takes the best stuff to record the record and they don't play favorites. Then the band works from there. James and Lars has the majority of the credits because James writes most of the lyrics, and fine tunes the riffs. And Lars is responsible for the arrangements. The only time this wasn't the case was during Load and Reload where James and Lars were very guarded with those two records. Still Kirk and Jason had some credits then.
Pure quality. Lots of things going on, regarding music (hence, emotions, of course.) I never doubted Kirk was a freaking genius. The solos from Sanitarium, Fade to Black, Unforgiven(s), Bleeding Me, etc. "speak" for themselves. I became a guitar player when I was a teenager thanks to Metallica, and today, 38 years old, I have around 1000 original music albums, published my own music, and Kirk is still one of my favourite musicians. GO KIRK!
Don't forget 'To Tame a Land' :)
Man… I didnt knew what to expect from that song but damn… It’s deep, pure, unique, it’s saying a story without saying any word, it’s emotional but powerful. I hear a little bit of Metallica, a little bit of Morricone, a little bit of Pink Floyd, i hear Kirk. Man, you are a hero.
💯
You can add just a little whole of To Tame a Land also haha
@@victoramicci840 XD
A little Iron Maiden too.
@@brianbusbee1653 introduction is similar to a specific songs of Maiden, but we couldn't say that the song sounds like Iron Maiden style, imo

If only the first one is that good, imaging how good the others will be!!!! Congratulations Kirk, that's why you are my favorite guitarist ever!!!!!
Just finished listening, that last one is wonderful
Maiden and the monster sounds like a sequel to call of ktulu, the jinn sounds like a Proggy version of a romance movie soundtrack, this song sounds like a wearer movie soundtrack(wonder why) and the final track is a very proggy song that sounds kind of like a mystery movie soundtrack.
You probably 12 if your favorite guitarist is Kirk
@@metalcommand14 he isn't mine, but I don't see the difference with having Mustaine or Shuldiner as fav guitarist. He also played insane solos and wrote iconic riffs.
Just a matter of opinion, he didn't say he was the best of all time, just that he was his fav
@@metalcommand14 Seems like you are underestimateing his skills. Also, who's your favourite guitarist doesn't depends on your age. And I am 16.
Damn. Where has this talent been during the Metallica writing process?!
Ask the idiot Lars and the dictator James.
Literally in every song?
Largely stifled since the early 90s.
I think james and lars didnt let him write much on the latest album so I guess thats why he wanted to make a solo album.
I don’t understand how you told an entire story with zero words and stop motion animation. You Kirk, are amazing.

I'm so glad that this was nothing like what I was expecting. That was amazing. I don't know if you'll ever read this Kirk, but thank you so much for making this.
I found this surprisingly engaging.
Its a great song, i love Kirk's work - I recommend you also listen to 'To Tame a Land' by Iron Maiden, you migjt get a surprise - there is a theme in common in the songs (and there is nothing wrong with that)

@@totofranciscooruesaguier7081 Did you listen to both songs? The intro is very similar to TTAL
@@tachikomakusanagi3744 yeah!!! i forgot it!!! it`svery similar
It's a really cool piece. If Metallica was a no boundaries type of band like Opeth, this is how some of their music might sound. I really like the sensitive arrangement and how the horn, the strings and the piano fit into into the whole thing. Very nice to hear this side of Kirks musicality.
When have Metallica ever had aesthetic boundaries? They change with every album.
Devin Townsend
@@HighVybeTribe will listen to his stuff
Or imagine if Metallica allowed this into their writing it would be Master Mark II. Probably a link between that and the Black Album in my I know nothing opinion.
@@shovedhead Not really. The tone might change, but ever since Death Magnetic they've been ultra conservative with their sound. Such a shame.
That is Kirk's best solo in many years - it fits the song, it's emotive, it's musical and dynamic. Let's hope the era of "Lars makes Kirk play random stuff according to his directions and puts whatever licks he wants together in the computer with Greg Fidelman without Kirk even there for input" era of Metallica is put to an end. This is the type of stuff we want to hear and it shows there really is so much more potential from this musician than we have been allowed to hear for a while now.
Kirk really needs to think about his solos for it to be great like on this song. Wish the other band members and the producer would push Kirk like Bob Rock did.
you're post bores me... 😴 just like this video 💤
@Deconstruction 33 Hopefully he's not just improvising the solos on the next album like he did in Hardwired
This is the first good solo project I’ve heard from all the legendary 80’s metal guitarists. I must say I have much more respect for you now Kirk 🫡
Slash is an AMAZING solo artist as well!
not to start anything here, but atleast imo Marty Friedman's solo work is quite fascinating.
I mean Dan Swano's solo project kicks incredible ass.

The flamenco part made me cry…beautiful
Of course, it did. It's To Tame a Land by Iron Maiden
This is my favourite composition from Portals, I love this! I keep finding more and more stuff in here! SO MUCH DETAIL! 3 major chords during the kid and happy stage, 3 minor chords during the tragedy... the main riff is awesome! This is a full story in 5 minutes. So many feelings during ONE SONG! Happiness, love, despair, sorrow, hope... Mr. Hammett and all who worked on this, I THANK you for this Master piece!
3:54 his best solo in years. Absolutely gorgeous.
Lol it's just fade to black on top of another song. Kirk writes good melodies but his solos are obviously just improvised because he doesn't get out of his comfort zone.
@@terran236 It's literally not even close lol beyond superficial tonal similarities.
@@a.t.3192 It is very close actually, even the pentatonic patterns he plays are the same. It may be in a different key and slower but it's the same note choices.
But as I said that's not to criticize the whole composition. Everything besides the solo is well thought out.
@@terran236 "Kirk writes good melodies"
[x] Doubt
@Le Tigidou see? any musician knows when Kirk does the same shit over and over. 😂 Haha hate to say but I think only little kids get impressed by his solos. Either these kids or boomers need to start listening to some Periphery, Haken, Animals as leaders, Between the buried and me, Fallujah, Plini. Those bands have gorgeous innovative solos.
Let us not forget who Kirk's guitar teacher was (the legendary Joe Satriani, for those who don't know). With that in mind, I'm not surprised that he made such a wonderful and emotional piece of music like this. By the end I was moved deeply by the emotion in this arrangement and the build up to the middle part and solo section. Well done!
Kirk had 4 hours in total. He learned blues licks only.
Think I hear more Ennio Morricone influence than Satriani =)
@@dawidwieczorek2816 Most people forget that Alex Skolnick also studied with Satriani as well. And while I think that Kirk is a good guitar player, he's nowhere on the level of Skolnick.
Why am I obsessed with this song.
It plays within my head all the time.
you are not alone
Kirk literally described them like this
Kirk Hammett listens to Godspeed You! Black Emperor, clearly. Love this.
What I love about Kirk's work is that his solos always feel of impending doom or very uplifting and this song shows both feelings very well.
Nice orchestration, a beautiful melody and solo... Thanks to Kirk for sharing this with us!
Composition - not an ABABCAB sort or thing. Melody - creating a song over the rhythm. Dynamics - soft, heavy, loud, aggressive. Authenticity - I recognized the player. It is all there. Thank you, Kirk! This was an unexpected delight. Beautiful!
Well said.
Sounds like good cinematic music, and the animation is dope too. Simple, and touching
Kirk always modest and humble. The man is a genius à legend 🙌👏
I've just heard that Kirk have own solo project from Beato interview. Gonna give this all the support that I have. Man, this is great news😮
Oh man! I hope he plays this at a Metallica show. This is awesome! Can't wait to hear the rest of the EP. Imagine, he starts playing this and then they break into Creeping Deat at the 2:00 mark.
It is wonderful that Kirk has his space for creation! You Kirk are a very creative musician, with an unique style and approach to the guitar. This song is so meaningful and deep!

- Cry a lot
I love this! I was presently surprised how much of a departure it was from what I expect from Metallica. And as a big Metallica fan (of your entire catalogue) I would not be upset if this kind of sound permeated the next release. The only thing that is disappointing is that after all this time, you need their blessing to do your own thing.
Almost reminds me of a Dream Theater styled instrumental. I love the dynamic way the sounds of the song convey emotions and a story. Hard to do things like this in an era of music where creativity is almost completely absent and dead. Excellent song!
Sublime. This is a very honest artwork. It has lots of Kirk Hammett elements and it seems to take out all of his feelings outside in a very natural way. I personaly love it because I love all this kind of imaginery, monsters, the "outsider" thing, transcendence, etc. Although he says that is close to flamenco, it is not so close but I'm sure his trips around the world and Robert inspired him to write something like this. The music video fits perfectly with the music, very nice work.
Calm down, it's only a soundtrack for a movie.
