The big fight was just Lin finally releasing her built up rage and resentment from holding that 30 year grudge. When Toph said she couldn't have a daughter in jail because she was Chief Of Police, she was right. The inmates there would know Suyin was Toph's daughter, and I doubt she would last long locked in with criminals who Toph was personally responsible for imprisoning.
@@OshawottLuke Suyin was punished by having to leave Republic city and her mother and sister. I think having to leave a place where you were born and all your friends and family behind is not that easy at such a young age and I would say that's a pretty big consequence for her actions, she deserved harsher punishment but she was still basically just a kid. Lots of returning original series voice actors this episode! You guys were right about Ming-Hua being voiced by Grey Delisle (Azula in ATLA). Also, Su-yin was voiced by Jessie Flower (Toph from ATLA) in the flashback scenes.
It's also easy to forget that, in spite of being police chief, Toph was a total rule-breaker by nature. Episodes like the Runaway make that more than clear, and it kind of explains why she would be willing to bend the rules to save Su from prison, even if the guilt eventually forced her out of the police force.
My favorite thing about the Gaang in LOK is how realistic they were presented. We would love for them all to grow up to be the perfect parents and be like gods, but they’re human. I was impressed with the writers taking it that route.
My relationship with my brother is almost uncanny to Lin and Suyin's. I even have the scars on my body from trying to stop him doing stupid shit I had the sense not to do at their age. Maybe I should show my mother this episode.
I love how it makes so much sense for Toph to be a bit relaxed as a mother. She was basically locked away as a child so she didn't want to repeat her parents mistakes and gave her children more freedom. Of course she gave them too much and it back fired.
Suyin becomes one of the most interesting characters in the show for me. She’s so complex, talented, admirable yet flawed at the same time. She ended up being somewhat on the middle between Toph and Tophs parents. She wants to encourage her children to be the best they can (what Tophs parents didn’t do) but wanted her children to do so in Zao Fu and not too far from her cuz of her own upbringing.
Yes, Ming Hua is voiced by the same person who voiced Azula. She also voiced young Lin in this episode. And young Su was voiced by Jesse Flower (Toph’s voice actress in Atla)
I don't think the point is that Lin was wrong back then, she wasn't. The point is that Lin didn't take the chance to talk through it with Toph and Su when they asked her to meet with them because she'd rather hold on to a grudge. We can't really say to what degree Su owned up to her mistakes since we didn't see that meeting. So Lin was in the right at the time, but by not letting go or even trying to talk it out with them, I think she kind of lost the high ground. As for Toph... yeah, I think you guys mostly nailed it. She was so worried about making the same mistakes her parents did that she made some of her own. I remember when this show was airing, there was some fan rage over Toph (and Aang, too) being "bad" parents, I guess because it conflicted with what people imagined those characters would be like as adults. But, they weren't "bad" they just had flaws. No character in Avatar was flawless, and I think the flaws they had (both than and that we've seen in Korra) are very realistic for how they developed and their circumstances... in Toph's case, the overprotective parents, and in Aang's case, being the last Airbender and then having a son who could Airbend gave him some tunnel vision regarding his kids. Also yes, the Waterbender in Zaheer's group is the same actress for Azula, Grey DeLisle.. Well, Griffin, now. (I'm still not used to the name change, myself. Even though its been that way for awhile now).
When I saw Toph and Aang act like this, I didn't see the character of our hero's. I thought Toph would just accept that here dochter did something stupid and it is here problem not Toph's. Toph never ceart about what people thought about her, why would she now do this? I mean she stil used to say twinkeltous to Aang so why drama about her posistion, she should not care. And Aang as a not loving fater to two of his children? How, I mean he always loved his culture but he would realise that he should be there fore every one. When Zuko gave Korra the idea to give her self up becaus Aang would know that he should be there fore every one. And IF he didn't realise himself Katara would have talkt with him. And if Katara really changed that muth that she would not say anything. Sokka or Zuko or maybe Iroh or maybe an other master or dad from some one. I just don't see him being so terrible that he would go on vakasions without his hole family. I also have a problem with how thay made a wor in the water nation but Katara not being there to at least to talk with the leaders. And her just being a healer is not Katara like. I just think that thay chanced character fore the story with I get. Btw I loved Iroh in Korra an Zuko wans not so bad 🤗. Sorry for grammer misteaks and un clear tekst. I hope you get what I mean.
FRODfrod Well we know that su wouldn't really own up to her actions. Even for these intro episodes for her it was a condescending "I did bad but it's not really a big deal and we should all just move on" kind of feel. I never got the feeling that she showed any regret and 30 years has only taught her to raise the level. Petty get away driver has turned into a person who harbors war profiteers and pirates who have done who knows what as long as they have something that can benefit her. She didn't change, she just stepped her crime game up. No wonder Kuvira became who she did, look at who raised her.
su didnt own up to it..even with korra she didnt tell her..and tell me why is it the victim(lin) responsibility to meet up with them?? thats like me stabbing u and 10year later inviting u to a place so i can apologize..hell no the person responsible should put effort to come to u and apologize not the otherway around
Besides, is punishment really more important than reform? That just seems ridiculous to me, she's a better person now, so as far as I'm concerned Toph did the right thing. There's no point in ruining people's lives just because going to jail is something that's just supposed to happen to criminals or whatever.
How funny that Calvin brought up Toph getting with Sokka, I think the most enduring theory since Korra ended is that Su's father is Sokka. They confirmed Lin's father is a rando, but never Suyin's.
PixieLovesItAll【Danielle ❤】 I've always believed that theory. Especially when you compare Su's skin tone to Toph and Lin's. That girl's got some southern water tribe in her lol
I doubt it’s him, surely it would’ve been mentioned at some point. And I think Sokka would be too mature to just leave Toph to handle all of the parenting...
I'm glad that you liked Toph as an adult and had actual conversations about her. Far too often in cases like this we get perfect People with no problems whatsoever I appreciate that the writing team made the Gaang imperfect and still human with different faults, make no mistake they are good parents but each their own faults and they all made sense for the character.
Toph has been a free spirited loner, It took a long time for her to really bond with Team Avatar.I think her issues with her job and family were from this. I was surprised when Toph had been the chief of police because she never seemed one to be tied down in one spot for constant work. She was also brash and direct, not the best for raising children alone. She loved them but wasn't brought up in a well-connected family and therefore didn't know how to make it all work. She retired and left because maybe she felt that she obviously failed somewhere, two unsatisfied children one in trouble the other trying to hard. She ran away, which she had done in ATLA. Her meeting with Su-yin as an adult it was easier because it was adult to adult.
Toph was able to metalbend because of her unique perspective allowing her to conceptualize it differently. On top of that, however, not all Earth Benders can metalbend due to disposition. Kind of like how Aang could also earthbend, but he wasn't able to do anything until he stood his ground. So I'd say it's less about whether or not someone is capable of metalbending, and more like with any discipline. Not everyone's gonna grasp how to do calculus, no matter how much teaching they receive.
I think the flaw on Lin's part was refusing to see any change in her sister and take out things on...uh, daughter girl. Other than that, yeah Toph's covering things up rubbed me the wrong way a bit but adult problems I guess?
A few years back I was conflicted about the whole Toph thing as well, until someone pointed out a few things. Toph was kinda in a rough spot back then. She couldn’t risk Su going to jail - way too dangerous shoving your daughter into a place where you have, as chief of police, spend years locking up the cities worse criminals. To a lesser extend there’s the Beifongs connection to the Avatar to keep in mind - couldn’t have the daughter of a war hero and friend to the Avatar sitting in jail. It would’ve been a pretty juicy scandal. Su’s behaviour placed her family in a odd spot, but yeah Toph’s actions were highly questionable as well. At least they sorted stuff out.
@@rewrose2838 Better than letting her daughter get seriously hurt or worse in jail locked with the city's worse criminals BECAUSE she's a war hero's/police chief's daughter. Can you honestly say you don't understand her putting the protection of her daughter over her duty as police chief?
I like how Zaheer is almost like a weeaboo for the Air Nomads. I don't know if this is true, but I get the impression he was obsessed with their culture and spirituality to the point where he wanted to be one of them even though he wasn't. Honestly if he wasn't a bad guy, he'd probably be a really cool teacher for the new airbenders.
Yes, Grey Griffin is the voice of Ming Hua. She also voiced Azula and flashback Lin. And Su's full name is Su Yin Bei Fong. She still has the Bei Fong name.
Little fin fact about the voice actors, Azula's voice actor (Grey Delisle) is Young Lin Beifong and Ming-Hua, also Young Suyin Beifong was voiced by Jessie Flower who was Meng and Toph's actor in the original Avatar series
I think Su is still a Bei Fong because she's of higher status. That's how naming conventions work in ancient Asian cultures. Last names were mostly for the well off and rich and anybody who enters the family, male or female, takes that name. Which is why Korra and Mako and Bolin have no last names but there's Asami with the Sato name and Beifong for Toph and her family.
haha.... you mentioned Toph and Sokka :) that is a long running theory about Suyin. and there is a long list of points about it; she has darker skin than many earth kingdom members, she collects meteor metal like what Sokka forged his sword from. Both her oldest son and the emo/artsy son basically look exactly like Sokka with some style changes. goo.gl/images/QRjGSn
I love the progression of the tech. During Yakone's trial they were still using animal drawn carriages. Now some years later during su and lin's flashback. We see the first automobiles. And in Korra's time the cars are more advanced.
I agree with you about Toph... On ATLA I know the writers made jokes about her not having her "revolutionnary trip" with Zuko and yet, all these trips from the Gaang with Zuko explored parts of their past mistakes/their traumas, and Zuko helped with that. Obviously Zuko never had the "enemies" relationship with Toph that he had with the others on book 1 but still. Same goes for the Ember Island players... All the other characters are confronted with some of their mistakes/misteps through the story and Toph was like "this is soooo cool!" because YES her character is shown as badass and strong (which she is, obviously), and none of her faults are explored (but she did have some flaws). The play never explores the regrets she can have regarding her parents, the way they explore Zuko's relationship with Iroh. It never explores the way she behaved with the Gaang at first. I love the comic that does - FINALLY - explore Toph on that side, but I'm bumped it never happened on the show. Sometimes it feels like Bryke didn't care... On this episode TLOK kinda does the same, even tho I find the resolution all weird (why is Lin weird??), and fast. There are other things I'd talk about to develop but spoileeeers... SPOILERS I kinda hate how Toph has zero regrets regarding Lin and Lin's "pain" about her father on book 4......... I love Toph and I know she has a thick skin but showing compassion to your kids isn't... that hard ya kno? Especially regarding something that important as growing up without knowing who your father is!
Marie Chambe I agree with you on TLAB. They did explore her flaws in several episodes when she didn’t get along with the Gaang but not deep into her past and how that truly affected her. It made sense how she ended up here. SPOILERS: I saw Toph in season 4 as a regressed and regret filled character. Like she told Korra, the names change but the streets stay the same. She felt she did nothing to help. It’s kinda sad actually. And I actually respect the writers taking that risk. Our heroes from TLAB were not gonna live all happily ever after. Who knows, it still can happen they ain’t dead yet haha. But who other than Toph who went thru such a hard life with kinda a negative perspective would be a better mentor for Korra to help her recover. I mean half of Korras mentors were jerks, Tenzin at times and Lin and those white lotus know it alls in the very beginning of the series. Suyin and Katara were probably the only compassionate ones. Now I’m rambling but you get it haha.
The magnet suit does come back actually, in a way. Not in the form of another magnet suit, but Varrick invents a magnet train, which does explain why he was messing around with magnets.
Young Lin was voiced by Grey Delisle (who also voiced Azula, Ming-Hua, & the flashback version of Katara's mom in "The Southern Raiders"). Young Su was voiced by Jessie Flower (who also voiced Toph, as well as the girl with a crush on Aang in "The Fortuneteller")
7:43 Lin " Look I'll admit that I was not a perfect kid and I made some mistakes in the past " Eric " Own up to them " Me " 🤔....... Did she not just do that
Yeah, that comment tubbed me the wrong way, too. What would Suyin do? Go to jail over a failed, petty theft from years ago? She said she talked over it with Toph, and I felt like that was enough.
@@mediam3957 It wasn't petty theft. They stole people's life savings that's a whole different thing from stealing from a cash register or even drug store product from Walgreens.
Owning up to it is a complicated process. She may recognize that yeah I messed up as a teen and sorry for mamming you but she brushes it off at the moment as we have to get over it. The last thing you want to tell someone who you've put in horrible situations like that is to say let's talk and make nice. Lin wasn't wrong in putting distance between her sister and her. At the time she was still hurt over what Lin did to their family. In the end their complex problems were resolved with a complex solution.
Eric im so glad one of you noticed the water girl sounds like azula. They actually are the same voice actress but ive been waiting for one of you to notice hahaha
Always thought Aang would be the first metal bender (he had all the resources). I think they dropped that line for Korra just cuz it sounded cool. And Zaheer has the same airbending powers as Tenzin's daughter.
Metalbending being a lost art would make sense in theory, but considering the Avatar holding on to bending prowess the Avatar should have exhibited metalbinding at some point between it being lost and Aang. ANd when Aang has been imprisoned and never showed it.
Grey DeLisle (Azula) is in The Legend Of Korra, Cricket Leigh (Mai) Is not in Korra :) Grey DeLisle Did the voice of Ming-Hua (the woman with the water arms) and she did the young version of Lin. The woman with the third eye is voiced by Kristy Wu
Funny thing is I just finished the series lol I started it Wednesday and finished korra today at 12am lol I straight up binged this show for the first time
Soufian 27 I would have loved to see the Royal family but the Bei Fong family are directly involved in the plot so it makes more sense. We always want more of certain things but sometimes the story just doesn’t need it.
Soufian 27 I understand what you’re saying and it’s completely valid. For me though it’s more of “I wonder how it changed” or instead of what it would have provided for the story. Yeah it would be great to see how things were since TLAB, but I feel it’s more of a need cuz nostalgia than it would have been for an actual integral part of the story.
aeris44 I didn't really want Zuko's family to be too heavily in it because they are the ones who have been sorrounded in war and the entirety of the ATLA plot they need to stay out of these things for a while and its good to allow other characters to get the spot light from time to time. However, they are still some of the most interesting characters.
Suyin and Toph worked out the issues a long time ago with that incident. Lin wasn't the person that Suyin had to apologize to therefore there's no point in her confessing that she was wrong. Also like Suyin said, Lin would have had closure a long time ago if Lin met with her and Toph years ago. I know it's comfortable to be like "well if Suyin changed she should admit she was wrong" but from a spiritual and even technical standpoint she didn't have to do that. As for Toph, that's her daughter. I think that even though she said she can't have one of her daughters in jail because she's the chief of police but also as a mother... who wants their child in jail? She was willing to throw away her own career. She sent her away so that she could change. It's obvious that a crime is a crime but she knew that Suyin was rebellious, SHE was also rebellious as a child so it'll be hypocritical for her to be so hard on her for a non-violent crime.
Y’all should read the comics that take place after the ending of the avatar. It explains some things about metal bending and you get some finishing arc for toph
I love that Toph and Aang are both shown to be flawed as parents. That just goes to show how much thought and love goes into developing characters in these shows, even after their presence is no longer in the forefront in this series.

The reason Toph tore up the papers is bc if Su was to go to jail people would try to hurt her to get back at Toph. She did it more for Su's safety rather than her own reputation
Echoing someone else, Su didn't get away with it if you remember who Toph's parents were.... And she DID change, which is amazing (it probably required some serious soul searching, which is not easy). She might have owned up to her mistakes, like Aaron say, somewhere down the line. And I love hers and Lin showdown, they really needed to put their grievances all out there. And is kinda nice to see that our beloved characters didn't end up being perfect parents, I dunno, it makes me more attached to the story? Nice reactions guys, and I'm so sorry for Aaron hahaha
I would also arrest my sister if she was breaking the law. Not that I love order and control, but I do believe in everyone being treated as equals, and not getting unfair treatment because of family, economical, celebrity, or social status. I don't think laws should be biased towards or against certain people. Knowing someone personally doesn't make their crime less illegal.

the firenation started the 100 year war because of it's metal technology so i feel like it's unlikely metal bending would have been successfully tried or discovered and forgotten
One of the reasons why Toph said she couldn’t have a daughter in jail is because she knew the reporters would have a field day knowing the chiefs own daughter going to jail
See, this makes a lot more sense than the theory that Suyin would get abused in prison. MoonStar Lin's dad was some guy named Kanto. Idk about Su Yin's though
Lin was holding back Anger all these years, when she finally admitted her feeling and opened her heart ,she was able to let go of the past.
The comic "The Rift" Toph's relationship with her father is looked into and will explain some things about the family and creates theories
Toph's unique "seismic sense" that she used to see was what allowed her to find the bits of earth in unrefined metal when no one else could.
I don't think Suyin "got away with it"--she was sent to live with Toph's parents. You know, the controlling disciplinarians Toph ran away from?
except they actually changed a lot (toph saw her dad again in the comics)
I didn't say it was as bad. Just that I'm sure she got put back on the right track.
Jed Blue She got to live with the grandparents with lots of money and enough connections.
Grandparents treat their grandchildren different from how they treat their children.
Besides, is punishment really more important than reform?
That just seems ridiculous to me, she's a better person now, so as far as I'm concerned Toph did the right thing.
There's no point in ruining people's lives just because going to jail is something that's just supposed to happen to criminals or whatever.
There might not have even been enough technology to mine ores to and refine it into metal for it to have bent in the past
I never agreed and always thought there was more evidence that debunks that theory
I doubt it’s him, surely it would’ve been mentioned at some point. And I think Sokka would be too mature to just leave Toph to handle all of the parenting...
This is a bad week for Aaron and needles
Zeemod155 They must have planned it
Zeemod155 why?
Suyin is actually her full first name, not separate.
"Shane would love this"
So sweet how you think of Shane, altough he isn't there 😁
I'm glad that you liked Toph as an adult and had actual conversations about her. Far too often in cases like this we get perfect People with no problems whatsoever I appreciate that the writing team made the Gaang imperfect and still human with different faults, make no mistake they are good parents but each their own faults and they all made sense for the character.
Don’t forget Asami! She’s voiced by the voice actress who played Yue.
@4:02 - That happened to a character in Final Destination 5, played by PJ Byrne, who actually voices...Bolin.
FlubbedPig Nicely put. Like how some ppl just don’t have rhythm, or just can’t sing.
I think the flaw on Lin's part was refusing to see any change in her sister and take out things on...uh, daughter girl. Other than that, yeah Toph's covering things up rubbed me the wrong way a bit but adult problems I guess?
Ian Kevin Fortunately a new Ba Sing Day will begin soon ;)
Benitha Bonthuys Ah those a def good points too
Although I have no idea what toff meant by "and what were you thinking" to Lin
She still has the Bei Fong name.
asdf asdf pretty sure grey delisle is azula's & ming hua's voice actress (no idea how to spell her name tho)
its the same person. griffin is her married name that she sometimes gets credited as too
Little fin fact about the voice actors, Azula's voice actor (Grey Delisle) is Young Lin Beifong and Ming-Hua, also Young Suyin Beifong was voiced by Jessie Flower who was Meng and Toph's actor in the original Avatar series
If I'm not mistaken, I believe Bolin's voice actor died on Final Destination when he was getting acupuncture
LMAOO! No way!
Ragnarok yeah, on the movie :))
Yeah, I thought you meant the actor died at first.
John Nino to be more accurate the acupuncture lead to his death. His head was crushed.
SPOILERS
I kinda hate how Toph has zero regrets regarding Lin and Lin's "pain" about her father on book 4.........
SPOILERS:
I saw Toph in season 4 as a regressed and regret filled character.
Star wars rewiev and TLOK reaction in one day, oh boy, oh joy.
4:40 :0 omg!! Ive never noticed the needles in the guys head!!! And I have seen this so many times love ya channel
7:43
Lin " Look I'll admit that I was not a perfect kid and I made some mistakes in the past "
Eric " Own up to them "
Me " 🤔.......
@@JessicaFlores-qd7jq Sometimes complex problems can only be fixed by complex solutions
Ahmed Monsoon Or maybe he never got around to it? He had a lot of things to worry about after.
The drink "Kalenutsco" is a reference to Bryan Konietzko, co-creator of ATLA and LOK.
The woman with the third eye is voiced by Kristy Wu
ive watched the series 3x nd them reaction prob 3x, and i only just now realized Opal is the voice actor of Ty Lee
I was annoyed that Lin couldn't land one hit on Suyin and Suyin was beating her down emotionally and verbally.
Lin was in NO condition to fight in that fight.
@@UncleMilo this is the part that people seem to forget lol/
I wish Lin beat her to death.
I love season 3 so much
Funny thing is I just finished the series lol I started it Wednesday and finished korra today at 12am lol I straight up binged this show for the first time
Varuca salt is from willy wonka lol noticed one of y'all mention why varuca sounded familiar
Ming Hua has the same voice actress that voiced Azula and Young Su has the same voice actress that voiced Toph in ATLA
The Beifong family is the best.
Innocent Dude Prefer the Ozai family
Except for Batar Jr. Lol
Ming Hua is voiced by the same person who voiced Azula.
the fight between lin and sue mirrors the struggle between allegiance to family and allegiance to state.
Yes she did have to apologise to Lin. She permanently scarred her!
wow i totally forgot Calvin was in this reaction (in the conversation after the episode) until he laughed at Eren's phobia of needles. he was so quiet
lol, just checked and eric is spot on, the water girl is voice acted by the same person who did azula.
Y’all should read the comics that take place after the ending of the avatar. It explains some things about metal bending and you get some finishing arc for toph
Needles to say, Aaron sure pointed out he doesn't like the pressure of accupuncture.
boi
I love Eric's reaction to Topf come back. And i know what will happend ;) i waiting for next episodes.

The key to learning how to metal bend is emotion. It's kind of like an irony; metal is hard and cold, and emotion is warm and fluid.
Su has the same skin tone as Sokka...
5:53 I can't stop laugh i ng
I have a joke saved for episode 12, you shall hear from me
MonsterJunkie LMAO
It better be good, pressures on!
Julian Smit thats the one
Ming Hua is indeed Grey, she voiced Azula too
I'm watching this at night trying not to disturb my family and nearly burst out laughing at "we're going to need more needles"
Hey first name is Suyin and her Iast name is Beifong. Su is just a nickname.
Veruca Salt a character from Willy Wonka/Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The band Veruca Salt got their name from the movie.
0:18 Farouq was the villain from Legion.
Young Suyin having Toph's voice actress is wholesome.
Korras mom sounds a lot like Mei
That Zaheer Zathere joke is unappreciated.
What I hate about this episode was not seeing Lin wipe the floor with her sister's face. Needles are fine.
Question have any of them read the comics that came out after avatar because they are canon and there was more follow up from stuff the series left ambiguous. Anyone who’s also read the comics know what I’m talking about.
"Earth benders studying water bending = Acupuncture therapy"
"Firebenders studying water bending = THROWING FUCKING LIGHTNING AT EVERYTHING"
The fact that Su even went there...
Suyin's last name is still Beifong. In fact, I think the husband took the wife's last name, contrary to the norm.
Did anyone else notice that aaron's sweater has the blind wave symbol on it?
It’s Suyin Beifong
I'm sad they didn't show the scene when korra was like should I do something and Bolin says " you dont have siblings. Fighting is part of the healing process."
Ming hua is voiced by GreyDelisle. I looked it up
Suyin Beifong is her full name (Asian cultures don't generally have women change their surname on marriage)
the firenation started the 100 year war because of it's metal technology so i feel like it's unlikely metal bending would have been successfully tried or discovered and forgotten
Can’t wait for next episode reaction
MORE NEEDLES!!!
Korra just needs to learn lightening bending, magma bending, and blood bending, then she has truly mastered all the elements!
One of the reasons why Toph said she couldn’t have a daughter in jail is because she knew the reporters would have a field day knowing the chiefs own daughter going to jail
See, this makes a lot more sense than the theory that Suyin would get abused in prison. Because there's no way Toph couldn't make a special cell for her daughter or put her in a containment ward for her own safety. Instead, Toph keeping Su from prison to avoid the press is a lot more understandable.
there is a rumor that "toff," I think I'm spelling their names right, hooked up with "socka" and "bay fon"'s sister is his daughter.
Toph*
Sokka*
Beifong*
Young SuYin is voiced by Toph and Ming Hua is voiced by Azula
shit boutta get real soon
