S333 Thunderstruck Volleyfire Revolver

- Опубликовано: 24 ноя 2024
- The S333 Thunderstruck revolver, manufactured by Standard Manufacturing, is a unique design specifically targeting the self-defense market. This revolver holds 8 rounds of 22 WMR, but fires two of them simultaneously per trigger press, thus allowing the shooter to fire 4 times before being empty.
Standard Manufacturing designed this to address the "Gunfight Rule of Three" concept, in that the vast majority of gunfights happen in 3 seconds, with 3 rounds fired, within 3 yards. Whether or not this "rule of three" is legitimate or not is up for debate.
InRange found this revolver new in the box at a local store and purchased it to discuss the concept and to put the revolver through its paces and create this review. Let's see how it did...

Well then, S333, see you soon on Forgotten Weapons!
You could say that for the whole company's lineup.
Hahahaha
@@DaleErnieMichael They have a lineup?
Piotr Ciba, LMFAO, GREAT ONE.
Forgettable weapons?
I once theorized that firing two barrels closely together simultaneously would work poorly because the air turbulence created by each round will cause each other to destabilize and spread apart making it act more like a shotgun with buckshot than a rifled firearm. It would be interesting to try shooting it only one barrel at a time to see if accuracy improves.
Wow impressive theory
@@henryg8075 Same thing happens with battleship guns a triple turret never fires all three shots at the same time. Though idk if its a thing in you know "normal guns".
That seems plausible.
I'm sure Karl would be down with this. I hope he sees it!
I'm pretty sure you can't fire just one barrel at a time, so that might not be testable without some work
Edit: or yes, you can just load half the barrels, if your brain has more wrinkles than mine
Could the issue be caused by the rounds aerodynamically interfering with each other inflight? I know that on some old warships with triple turrets the center gun was fired with a small time delay because the barrels were so closely spaced.
It would be interesting to see what the accuracy is like when only one barrel is fired, and every other chamber is empty or has a snap cap/spent case loaded.
Sounds possible to me too: Due to normal tolerances i think the rounds will have a tiny time difference in ignition and the bullets in leaving the barrels. It could mean that the air pushed forward and to the side by the "slower" bullet effects the faster one that is already leaving the muzzle, and the propellent gasses of the faster one destabilize the slower one while leaving the muzzle. My guess would be the faster bullet makes a round hole but strays off and the slower one keyholes. And if by chance both go off really without the tiniest diference both keyhole.
The shooters aim is worse than any interference between the bullets, especially below 20 yard range.
And only interference that changes between shots is relevant. Consistent interference might as well be built into the barrels.
Yeah but, there's that double barreled .45 out there. That appears to shoot on target. Perhaps the ballistics are different with the .45...(?)
Would be interesting if he loaded only 1 round per chamber to see if the dual shot was an issue. But it shouldn’t be. Like the other guy said, dual 45 exists, and it seemed fine.
@@Knuck_Knucks .45 ACP is (usually) subsonic. It could be related to the shockwave caused by a supersonic bullet. Or the S333 is just crap. Who knows...
I've heard of guns having the same trigger pull as a staple gun, but never heard of having the same effective range as one!
Common misconception, Karl. The "Rule of 3" actually refers to the amount of wrongful death and/or property damage lawsuits you'll be hit with if you have to fire this thing in self-defense.
Karl, I have seen only a few of these on the range and 2 of them shot point of aim and weren't bad at all; BUT, the 3rd had the same issues you have with yours. The owner of the range and myself took the gun back in the shop to try to help the guns owner figure out the problem. We squoze two laser bore sighters into the rear of the barrels (not into the cylinder) and as best as we could tell, after about 4 to 6 feet the lasers intersected, which would explain why the rounds were tumbling, that is if our methodology was sound. I say that because it was impossible to verify whether our laser bore sighters were fully squared to the barrels due to the method of attachment. The owner of the offending pistol said he would contact the company but I have not heard anything further from him.
So does this mean the rounds were actually impacting each other in flight?
@@nathanieltodd5767 commenting about as late to you as you did to OP so forgive me;
Looks like it. Multi-barreled weapons that fire in perfect sync shouldn't have a convergence distance.
From OPs statement, even considering that it may just be anecdotal, it's reasonable that the level of consistent quality is a bit low. I'm sure that the "convergence" issue can be fixed by professional machining.
@@blackwoodsecurity531 Highly unlikely that you would get a powder burn consistent enough that they would still be next to each other. I would even say impossible. Keep in mind that bullet velocity can differ by more than 100fps between 2 rounds and they only need to be less than an inch off from each other to miss. So that means at 1/12,000 of a second or LESS of flight they would no longer be flying next to each other.
It may happen every once in a while but this consistently should be impossible.
This thing looks like and basically is a loud prison shank.
That's insulting to prison shanks.
not really as the shank works as intended ... this is more dangerous to the carrier than the perp
@@Disinterested1 not to the user, just everything down range but your target.

A prison shank might be more accurate

They make nothing but these overpriced gimmicky toys, they'll keep selling them to dumb first time buyers no problem. My friend dropped $1500 on a DP12 as his first gun despite me telling him not to, traded it at a big loss after only shooting 30 something rounds through it.

Standard Mfg has an awesome looking magazine fed bullpup shotgun called the SKO Bull that they announced at SHOT 2015, and is still not available for purchase. In that time, they've released numerous churched-up 1911's and SAA clones, a bunch of different goofball Cerakote finish options for the DP12, a .22 Thompson (why), a line of bog-stock AR15's (again...why) and this abomination.
Way to prioritize, Standard.
I bought an S333 and DP-12. The 333 is just a strange gun, very unique. Which is exactly the reason that I purchased it for my collection. Beer? this toy looking thing drinks Zima and you know it.
At least the S333 would fire all the cartridges loaded into it. The same can be seldom said for the Zip 22.
Hey it fired all rounds
Carrying a black powder cap and ball revolver, while not the best bet has been done because of stupid rules. For example; in 1972 I was stationed at Fort Bliss Texas. A buddy of mine had housing at Biggs Army Air Field. While I had a little .22 LR junk pistol made in Germany, my buddy wanted something more powerful and allowable to be carried on base, witch, at the time, my .22 was not. So it was, he began to carry the cap and ball on base, concealed because the base commander thought cap and ball were so obsolete that they were pretty much harmless. One day we both headed out in the field area near Fort Bliss with our revolvers. We had a blast shooting waste left over by the troops from field exercises but when the MP'S came to investigate the noise, my .22 was confiscated and I got an ass chewing from the CO, while my buddy's old Navy copy drew a chuckle from the MP's and he was allowed to keep it. So, in that case, the old cap and ball revolver really would have been preferential should a need arise back then an there. The old man told me that had I not registered that revolver with the Provost Marshall before the incident, I would have lost a few weeks pay over the deal.
You should send this to Beyond The Press and have them high speed cam the bullets to see if they touch each other at convergence distance.
I was thinking something similar but more that the energy release at the muzzle interfered with the rotation of the bullet causing them to tumble early. Regardless of the cause it's hard to believe that they didn't catch this in the design and test.

Yeah, this one looks a bit heavier. More effective when you give up shooting and just pistol-whip people with it.
As an owner of a Zip 22, I would take a decent stick over either. The Zip 22 can be fun, specially because I can just 3d print up whatever different parts I want. It has a few interesting mechanisms in it too and there was the potential for some decent firearms to come out of those ideas. No clue what they were thinking on the final product.

I have to say I’m surprised by the amount of muzzle flash coming from .22 WMR, even in a 2 inch (or whatever) barrel.
I've seen this issue with a lot of .22wmr pistols, 30gr rounds will stabilize just fine, but anything heavier and you start to keyhole fairly consistently. I had a 5 inch barrel single action in .22wmr and even that thing struggled with 50gr bullets. Accuracy was best with the 30gr rounds.

I dig the 'Facehugger' mask :)
That was a very fair and unbiased video. You gave the weapon every opportunity to succeed. I have serious doubts that it's a lemon. I strongly believe it was rushed to market as a "look cool" gun to eat up that space of the market share. I hope none has to count on that weapon to save their lives or those around them. As you so clearly stated, the shooter is responsible for the placement of each round, not the manufacturer. It's going to hit everyone and everything, except what they are aiming at.
I saw one of these for sale for about 350 in my favourite local pawn shop a few months back and considered getting it for the novelty, thought it was a neat concept. Never thought it would be anywhere near a practical gun though, and I don't have the money for range toys; kinda relieved to see my judgement was correct. Still a neat concept though.
Another commenter mentioned the turbulence from the bullets being fired so close to each other might be affecting their stability, i wonder if reversing the direction of the rifling in one barrel might help? Hell, maybe as short as it is it might actually be more accurate without the rifling entirely.
Still some interesting lessons to learn from this cool-but-failed design, i think. I've been thinking of a design (that i may or may not ever actually get to build) for a .22lr defensive pistol, and what I'm seeing here will help me with making some important design decisions in case i ever do get to build the thing.
Wow! When you guys showed this off at shotshow I really liked the concept. I’m very sad that this is essentially useless. Hopefully a version that works will be made.
Out of interest, what did you hope the concept was going to add to your self defense when compared to a 5 short "pocket revolver" firing a larger cartridge.
Hamish McGregor well first off the concept intrigued me, double the holes and at close range for personal defence. Also when out and about twice the chance of hitting a snake. Honestly I hope the make a version with another 6 inches on the barrel so it can actually ingage with the rifling
That makes some sense. My concerns would be that stopping power wise a larger cartridge of simlar energy/recoil is going to do just as well as the pair of holes (especially at very close ranges where they wouldn't be much further apart than the barrels)... while actual shotguns (or "rat shot" / "snake shot" in larger handguns) offer a far more usable pattern for varmints, and don't threaten to fly for miles or penetrate walls to make a bad decision into a lethal mistake.
Also the rifling lengths not the problem, there are a bunch of non-volley fire .22's that have simlar barrel lengths, and while "inaccurate" vs a longer pistol, your talking a handful of extra minutes of arc, not spreads of 2 feet at 10 foot range. Indeed it should be noted that many unrifled handguns are vastly more accurate than the S333 managed in this video. Hence I suspect 6 inches of barrel would likely have the same problems if they didn't fix what was causing the rounds to tumble, which could be anything from interference between the pair, to the cylinder alignment... and with a pair of 6" barrels and 8 round chamber, its really not a pocket device anymore.
In case you need to engage an attacking gopher or groundhog at one yard or less, I guess it's a go-to. Love the facehugger mask too by the way.
The CCI maxi mag .22 WMR shoots great out of my Kel Tec PMR 30. Plus I only paid $360 NEW and 30 round magazines with a nice trigger.
Yea but does your keltec produce terrible wound channels from key-holing, especially to those behind your intended target? No need to have expanding hollow points, if it turns sideways and hits you broadside. Two lawsuits every trigger pull, too.
@@Spanky00Cheeks That is true, I'm ordering my S333 double Keyhole maker right now!! lol
Did you ever try loading the gun with every other round using a dummy round in the open chambers? My wife had a thought that possibly the side by side muzzle blast was destabilizing the bullets. Honestly, I would prefer an 8 shot single barrel 22 magnum revolver.
I think they talk about that in this or another video.
Really appreciate the update from the manufacturer! Your follow-through almost made the Ouija Board scene worth watching....
Seeing how it performs it really makes sense why they'd want to use the 3 yard rule.
I get the feeling they truly intended this to be a POINT BLANK type of weapon... but at that point why not just a normal handgun at that range? At first I thought these looked really cool and the idea was crazy but novel... but now I'm disappointed to see these things are pieces of crap😩
But it's advertised as something else, might do the 3 yards advertised on the box, but it's a dangerous liability for anyone firing this weapon past the advertised distance.
@@JosephArata I'd feel more comfortable after seeing this thing carrying a single shot .22LR Life Card pistol with CCI Stinger rounds, because at least I have more of a chance of hitting my attacker past 3 yards.
This thing better to have than just a knife but
Debatable on how much so
Looks like a sub 2" snubby. My experience with sub 2" barrel on .22 is that they keyhole even with a conventional one barrel revolver.
This would be perfect for doing drivebys at barbecues and package stores.
Rifling or not, keyholes or not, that is not why you missed the target completely. Totally unrifled and tumbling projectiles will NOT deviate by 20 inches in 6 yards.
--
What happened (I think) was that the two finger trigger and minimal purchase on the grips meant that once you get past the release point, there is nothing preventing the gun from pivoting up in your grasp by as much as 20~30 degrees as the tension is suddenly gone. The palm pushes the grip forward rotating the gun up about its center of mass, the counter moment from the trigger is suddenly gone. If you put it on a vice, I am sure the put will hit the target roughly where the sights are pointed.
Can you try, or did you try, shooting with alternate filled and empty chamber so only one barrel is "active" at each shot to see if the projectiles are "hitting"/affecting each other?
That was my thought.
I don't think that's the case here, I'm positive they are loosing spin stabilization past 3 yards because of the 1-1 1/2 inch long barrels they are being fired out of. That's a lot of wasted powder firing out of those magnum casings.
I was not expecting the spirit consultation. However, it does fit Karl's commitment to thoroughness.

Wow, that's crazy! Could barrel length have something to do with the problem? Maybe .22 mag just needs a little more barrel to stabilize, it is a hot little round. Just a thought, thanks for the review!

Oh boy...
I own one of these. Bought it as a novelty for shits and giggles. Now need to learn my pistol whipping skills for self defense.
Bobbie Warbington LOL
This looks like a strong candidate for replacing a Zip gun. At least it fires reliably....
Looked like he was having trouble getting the spent casings out though. What a dud gun.
Seems like a great backup for a .22 Zip. It looks sort of like a cap gun, and I can't help but think an 8 round .22 double action would be better if you had to do something like this.
Whoever said "any gun is better than no gun" had never seen this garbage.
Still better than that 22lr "zip gun"(it has a grip!)
@@awesomefatBruceLee At least all that did was occasionally shoot in the right direction. This does not even shoot in the right direction.
They should make a 8 barrel version that fires 8 rounds at once
YESSSSSSSSSSSSS
I was interested in this from a old person/weak strength perspective but this is just atrocious, how in hell did this make it out of the factory? I hope this is a magic one off otherwise there are people out there who may own this, thinking to use it for defence, who may get a VERY nasty shock if the need to use it, that could get them killed.
Cynical answer: they hope that the owner of the weapon does not survive the attack ???
If your first attempt to fire the gun is in defense, you where in for a nasty shock regardless, and most target ranges are a lot longer than 7 feet, so even if you've only ever fired one cylinders worth to prove it works you'll know its a lemon.
its a monday one. or a friday one...
"22 Magnum is what you're gonna use to fight the covids" lmfao
Man I’ve almost bought one of these for a fun toy, not a serious self defense tool, but I saw it online and theirs were actually hitting side by side.
Excellent. This addresses the critical, frightening lack of handguns in the United States!
The AN 94 is now considered volley fire since one trigger pull fires 2 shots😂

Consider the effect of two closely-spaced supersonic shock waves interfering with normal ballistics.
... consider the effect of a barrel to be about an inch long? Just like what you can accomplish with an inch long... you know what.
The bullets may actually be hitting one another mid flight.
@@mikenewby484 at least they're hitting something then
Everyone's laughing in the background.
I have NEVER seen a gun review video quite like this one. You da BESS!
Seriously, what was the intention here?
A) Use a cartridge that needs at least a 2” barrel to start to beat 22lr, and use a 1” barrel.
B) Fire 2 for each trigger press, so every pulled shot wastes an extra round.
C) Create a trigger so big that a good grip on the handle is impossible. Forget 2 handed grip.
D) Make it bigger than most sub-compact 9mm in every dimension.
E) The rear sight could be all the way back because the hammer is covered, but put it over the cylinder to minimize the sight radius.
F) Put a trigger drop-safety on a trigger that is so heavy that it wouldn’t budge after a fall from the Empire State Building.
G) Add a weird trigger-guard thingy that actually ADDS snag to every kind of draw, especially from a pocket. I will say however, the thingy would help it sit in the right position in the pocket, if it wasn’t way too big for pocket carry.
