I retired, have the time and money now and jumped on the FFS wagon. I found out staring at a screen, watching a jig trying to get a fish to bite just isn’t for me. I use it the most to identify edges like weeds, rocks etc. so I know where to cast or troll. I see fish around and see how they act. It’s nice to use to spot brush piles and don’t need a markr buoy. It sure has cut down on my lure loss! It sure can be frustrating to see live time fish not biting. lol. It has been a great learning tool and can be entertaining. You still have to know if you are looking at a carp or a walleye 😉. When I was a kid I saved up for a lowrance green box sonar. I remember when I was ice fishing and a bunch of old timers said that’s cheating and will ruin fishing. Yet here we are! Keep up the good work Jason and have a great spring!

Couldn’t agree more. I have garmin livescope on my boat and use it to find targets to cast at. The only time I actually watch fish eat is if I randomly find a big school of perch or through the ice. It’s crazy to me that there was never any of this controversy when SI or 360 came out and it helps me just as much as live does.

Well stated Jason. Thank you for your balanced approach. FFS is a tool, like carbon fiber rods, GPS, braided line, spot lock etc. All these advances created opportunities for advantage if you understood how to apply them. In the end the fisherman has to be a Steward of the profession and protect the resource. When we lose our cultural respect for the waters we will lose the fish. We have to educate the youth positively and punish the adults who refuse to respect the rules set up to protect the resource.

they do bring a lot of money and excitement to the sport which allows better management of the lakes moving forward. I dont know if you have similar issues where you fish but my goodness i think the biggest damage to the fisheries comes from polluted rain run off causing massive algae blooms. I dont know if its from farms or the fertilizer from the lawns next to the lakes but its a massive issue with a lot of the lakes near me. Sorry for the rant. I do agree that fisheries take a hit from tourneys.

I am 70 and at first I didn’t like FFS but when I got honest with myself I didn’t like it because anglers weren’t having to pay their dues like I did to learn about each fish. But now I see it as the future of fishing and something to embrace. My best fishing buddy has it and I have seen that not all fish bite when you find them. It’s not as easy as people think who have not used it.

Love your perspective Jason! 5 years ago in western Nebraska you could go to any lake in my area and there might of been 10-15 guys there and that was busy! Social media and RUclips has connected people to the out doors and shows people that “hey I can do that too.” Now on a weekend there’s 30-40 huts on the ice and it’s a lot of people that had an interest in fishing but had never done it. They saw some videos and realized that they could do it too. Social media also shows “ guys slaying with 11:18 livescope” they only show the days where they could have thrown a piece of corn on a hook and caught anything they wanted. They don’t show the days where they worked their butts off throwing everything they had at the fish and got skunked. Ffs is a tool like anything else, I’ve bought all sorts of drills, saws, etc and still haven’t built a house. Thanks for the videos Jason!

    Great video. A lot
Of truths. I have forward facing sonar and love it. However I do think in some cases fish limits should be lowered especially for panfish. It’s an unbelievable tool in the wintertime for perch, crappie, and bluegills. 15 is too many. 10 is plenty.

Second place was doing similar. So just because ffs is being used doesn’t mean you are going to be in the winner circle

FFS is here to stay. What needs to be addressed is bag limits on fish. This technology has impacted many lakes and meat hunters use it to harvest limit after limit. Guides also need to be responsible and make sure clients are not taking home limit after limit.

There was an article written that I have forgotten the title of, but I do remember it had a great line that stated "If you can't handle rejection, don't use FFS." I watch more fish reject my baits than bite them. Especially when I am first getting started. Honestly, once I am tuned in to where the fish are and what they want to bite on, I don't look at the screen near as much. Jason I think stated quite well how FFS is misunderstood and how the perception is blown out of proportion. Does it help? Yes! But not for the fact it means you see a fish and automatically catch it. It's the fact that it allows you to observe and adjust your presentation. But you still have to find fish, you still have to guess what it is that they want initially and the cadence that triggers that bite. Some days it really doesn't matter, the fish just don't want to bite. However, without the technology you wouldn't have that level of understanding. If you approach the subject of using FFS with the understanding that you want to learn your target more than you want to catch, then you have learned why FFS is such a great investment. I think there will be a time in the future, that the clicks off the FFS transducer will actually be a hinderance as fish learn, adjust and shut off when they feel or hear those clicks. Until then I would say it's worth picking up an FFS unit, learn your lake and fish better and then apply that new found knowledge. Good video Jason, and I really like how well you have captured every conversation I've had or heard around FFS and summarized it into a concise video. At the end of the day, nothing beats out time on the water.

  • @jasonburns4723
    @jasonburns4723 3 месяца назад +2

Wasn't there a similar argument when underwater cameras came out? I think FFS is the same, you may see more fish but you still have to get them to bite. We were just at Winnipeg and I know for the amount of fish we caught I marked just as many that didn't bite. As long as us anglers are being responsible with the resource I have no problem with it. I bought a FFS and love it, especially for ice fishing. I enjoy it on my boat as well but haven't quite got it dialed in as I'm casting yet and have only played with it a little trolling just for fun. I do like it mainly for finding edges of weeds for casting but seem to use it a lot less while on my boat. I agree with all you have said about this Jason. In reading some of the comments I think for us weekend warriors, it may not help you always catch more fish but maybe it will cut out some time to help get you on a few more fish quicker.

Your grandfather might have complained when optics for deer rifles became popular, same with the the green lowrance box. I considered FFS for ice fishing but I enjoy relaxing in a shack more than hole hopping. If anyone wants to do the work to chase fish with FFS by drilling and walking, have at it. If FFS collapses the fisheries, then those fisheries were already failed.

I look at FFS as another tool to assist an angler in finding fish, but many other components come into triggering the right fish to bite. I think that has somewhat got a bad rap, as guys in tournaments for walleye are fishing deeper and deeper water for big fish and killing fish due to the pressure changes. We as anglers need to have some ethics regarding deep water walleye. Turning back fish caught out of deep water is unethical, if you are releasing fish just to catch a bigger one, is not sportsmanship and can harm a fishery.

I believe side imaging is the one that helps me the most, now I can find your brush piles in a few minutes making one pass covering a football field instead of zig zagging back and forth for a hour or two. FFS doesn't make you a better fisherman.

  • @ericbrosted6870

Great video Jason, your passion certainly comes through when you speak about your love for the sport. I could write a bunch about what FFS means to me and how I use it, but there are so many others (such as yourself) that can do it far more effectively and to a wider audience. What I will take a moment to write about is the dangers inherent in any type of “banning things” discussions. I also hunt, and I’ve watched a similar argument play out for years now with the whole vertical bow vs crossbow issue. People spend A LOT of time fighting within the sport about who’s right and who’s wrong and what needs to be banned or who should be banned from using a particular type of weapon. Ultimately it’s the sportsman that loses and the anti hunting establishment that wins. We spend so much time shouting at each other that we seem to miss the real dangers of habit destruction and anti hunting propaganda and legislation.
I say this with the utmost respect for my fellow fishermen when I urge you to be very careful using the phrase “ban FFS”. Today that ban might be very attractive to you since it covers something that you don’t apparently want or need. But there may come a day when the government (at the urging of the ban it crowd) might come to ban something that you decide you do want or need. Like maybe a gas powered outboard or truck.
The slippery slope never seems to be quite as steep or slippery when your concern is focused on what others shouldn’t be allowed to do. But some day, when the ban it crowd comes for your (insert whatever you’d like here) it may be too late to change your mind in other areas where you’ve led a similar attempt at banning or regulating something.

100% agree with you! I spent $4500 on a 25+ year old boat and have slowly added just about everything Garmin that I can. I work on the boat all the time, but apparently I must love messing with it. I learned how to network and wire everything myself. We catch more fish now than we ever did in our lives. Of course FFS is a big part of it, but just as important has been learning to use the tools we have. We also keep a lot less fish too. Exactly like you said we know we’ll catch fish next time too. I learn something new every day with my FFS! We have been using our PS30 transducer with great results on those Fort Peck lakers. Thanks for your continued great content!

  • @commonsenseapproach101
    @commonsenseapproach101 3 месяца назад +1

The biggest threat to our fisheries is hands down guides and farm run off, especially ice fishing ones. Why? every time they go out with clients, those clients want to keep a limit every time. Their was 4 guides that had 4 clients each day for 5 day in a row, and they took limits out of crappies and perch every day. That lake had over 20 guides on it from out of state for 3 weeks every day for those crappies. SD has zero regulations on guides, which is a huge issue. FFS is just a tool, i have a Garmin and it still doesn't make the fish bite. Plus vexlar is a Live sonar as well, so why didn't people complain then?

I’d comment my opinion on ffs but it’s easier to just say that it’s exactly spot on with what you said in the video!
Unfortunately social media has given complainers a louder voice than ever which is creating unnecessary drama. Walleye fishing in particular I feel has a lot of growth potential because of the positives of ffs (youth involvement, lure development etc) and I hope the growth potential isn’t damaged by the unnecessary bickering.
Anyways thanks for sharing your thoughts and keep up the good work, Jason!!

FFS certainly allows you to catch more fish more easily. I find it funny that when I watch the MLF or Bassmaster the anglers spend more time staring at their FFS vs actually "fishing". Reality is that limits will need to be decreased. Guides both (summer and winter) now take multiple groups out per day and catch limits of walleyes and crappies vs one group a day that might not limit out.

I use my Livescope for ice fishing it helps me find them faster which at my age of 56 saves my back from drilling holes that’s not needed, but it’s going to be a heated topic for awhile but having a Livescope doesn’t make them bite, that’s for sure.

Not sure if it's been addressed much here or not as I have not read through all the comments but I will put my own 2 cents in as it applies to the reason that FFS has not been demonized as much with walleye tournament anglers as it is with the bass tournament scene. I think that this is because walleye fishing has always been open to technology and offshore fishing has always been a valid option. With bass fishing shallow water fishing has always been a main stay and secondly, the ice fishing culture is much more prevalent with walleye fishing and electronics have been accepted for decades. Anyhow, great commentary on this subject. I always feel like you value fishing greatly and are a steward for the resource and the sport in general.

It’s a double edge sword we’re as you can find them a little easier, you can see them , but you can’t make them bite ! 2nd with that improved ability come greater responsibility to implement catch & release in your Daly fishing . To win fishing tournaments, you and your team have to be a fish finder first of all. The live sonar gives you the ability to cast at the biggest fish and skip over the smaller ones. So that is the biggest advantage to me. As for a weekend or once or twice a month, fisherman, it's not needed . But it does make it more fun to see the fish react to your bait. You can find out if you are fishing too fast or slow and so on. If you have the money and enjoy fishing, buy it .

Jason --- our good friend Tony Dean (that got you started in your show) was against spinning wing decoys for waterfowl and 1 power scopes on black powder rifles. I am a little younger than he was but not much. My fellow angler Bob Probst (I fished a lot with his nephew) won many tournaments when other contestants had the best rigs money could buy and he had a flasher. FFS is a tool just like other innovations. There is some merit about advantages in money making tournaments. Way back when some guys from my town went to Michigan and learned to hand line --- and won several big tournaments doing it. Hand lines were subsequently band by most tournaments. I think you were getting at "sportsmanship" and "ethics" several times in your comments --- and a little of that would go a long way. Chuck Clayton.

Not for the guy who likes to sit in one spot and relax or hardhouse fish. On an unfamiliar lake I still think a good topo map as my best tool. Also, many small ponds and lakes have no motors or electric only. Maybe small lakes and ponds should go no FF sonar. I see FF as too easy to locate fish on a small pond or lake.

That's true talent on the water in using your head and what you see to make fishing decisions. Are electronics awesome? Of Course. But how good are any of them without electronics?

Makes perfect sense to me that if fishing is your buisness and its your job to put ppl on fish you would be silly to not use it. But i do think were loosing touch with nature and we dont need it. I watched a video of a guy cast netting shad using forward facing sonar throw his net on a school of shad but when he pulled them up they were big crappie and he said ugh oh not shad..

I hate it when the guy next to me has a 150ph motor, my 25hp takes 4x as long to get on the "good" spots! FFS is a tool, just like everything else, in the end, fishing is all about being a True sportsman, fishing is fun, I keep what I eat, and enjoy catching the rest and releasing them ....if I get lucky to have caught more than I keep.

It's about conservation! I don't care if the new kid can school me at muskie fishing. Good for him. But it's absolutely trashing the minnesota lakes when it comes to muskie fishing. The fish cannot handle being caught several times a season. They will die eventually and they are not as willing to bite or even follow after being stung too many times. You're missing the big picture. With the DNR being unwilling to stock more fish, something has to give.

I say, get rid of it! We have small lakes in here in Minnesota that have enough pressure from guides going around and empty each lake! And yes, I’m 63 I have seen lakes emptied before! Gives the fish a chance

I’ve personally used FFS and just bc you have it doesn’t mean you’ll catch fish. You still have to have to proper presentation to help make the fish bite & sometimes the fish don’t want to bite. May help you don’t fish but I don’t think it helps make the fish bite.

All the electronics is fine think more people like yourself needs equipment like that, you make a living off of fishing and allot of pressure to catch fish and share your knowledge with people like me. Which we do to go out to catch a meal or two, and to pay for all that high priced sonars are crazy to me.

How long before spoon bill fishing is ruined? How long before musky fishing is ruined. Thos fish take decades to grow to their size . So what about state records getting broke at a crazy rate!! Like metal bats in MLB they dont allow it for the sport! Cant use drones to deer hunt . I mean at what point is it no longer Fair Chase?

I've been fishing the Mississippi River for 60 years and I believe they should be banned alot of people laugh it off but when they ruin their own sport with over harvest they won't be laughing. People who couldn't catch fish before are now catching fish with ease limits are being lowered already people catch and release but catching fish in40 feet of water the mortality rate is high professional anglers should be leading the way to ban these but as usual money talks.

Just another “tool” you can use to identify and follow a 10lb walleye around the lake until it bites. Can’t do that with any of your other “tools”. Use it for recreation, not for tournaments

  • @Lonzo1530

Personally I am totally against using FF sonar in fishing tournaments. I just watched a RUclips video of the Cabelas NWT 2023 fishing tournament at Devils Lake. A tournament that has the best anglers in the nation participating in it. The winner of this tournament stated that he used FF sonar and only casted at the biggest fish. Think about that. Only targeting the biggest fish in the system by the best anglers in the country only takes a few years at most to have an adverse affect on a fishery, especially a smaller lake or resevoir. The big fish caught in these tournaments are not all going to be releaseable. The MLB limits the rubber used in baseballs or baseballs would fly 30% further thus making most current baseball fields obsolete. The PGA limits the rubber compound used in golf balls or they would fly one hundred yards further than they currently do thus making several golf courses obsolete. Fishing tournaments or the local DNR should take a stance now and not allow FF sonar during fishing tournaments or the general public and local fishermen are going to be outraged by the targeting and catching of the biggest fish in their system. Now is the time to limit the technology that can be used in tournament fishing before the general public and fishery biologists demand limitation of fishing electronics.

In the era of selective harvest if you take a tool like this away you are going to see banning something becoming a negative. I fish 200+ days a year. I practice selective harvest. My family eats one meal a month of fish I catch. 90% of my harvest is taken using zero electronics. But you get s guy that is average or below average. With the sonar they may catch 25 walleye a day allowing them to choose a smaller "eating" size fish. Take away the sonar and the guy goes from 25 to 8-10 or four. Guess what, now that 21"-24" walleye ends up in a pan. IF a guy wants to harvest it is much better to choose three from 25 than three from six.

Social media has ruined fishing. Everyone wants to post they got a limit. Guys keeping 6 inch gills in not even cleaning um. Live scoop guys are no different . If you have the mentality that u have to catch fish every single trip then u are not out there doing it for right reasons.

The phrase "own truth" is not good to say. There is only one truth and each of us has our own opinion about that truth. People need to use reason to form their opinion in such a way that it's fair to others and not just satisfies their personal demons. There are rules pertaining to using all kinds of methods for fishing. Snagging and electricity, for example. Personally, I would restrict using FF in tournaments and see how that rule affects fish and fishing. If I found such a policy didn't achieve the desired result, I'd keep an open mind to other options.

My opinion is fair Chase needs to mean something, having a live view takes any sense the fish has a sanctuary. I've talke to many professional fisherman and agree its a bridge too far. Fished a tournament just this weekend where several boats has 3 to 5 units set up to literally follow the school never giving up on them. It will definitely have effects on the health of tbe fisheries. Delayed mortality is real and that average is Even quickly released fish will die at a certain percentage. Those who keep fish definitely have a advantage they didn't have. Its a wonderful technology that does work exceptionally well. My view is if you guide or fish for Money off the natural resources thay should be off limits. But its America until we destroy a resource by greed and lust for glory we won't learn. My view it's too far so i won't use it. If you feel its cool and fun have at it. But remember states like Wisconsin our DNR ability to restore abd restock lakes is virtually non-existent getting worse so unless we want to drastically raise licence fees many of our lakes are screwed.

There’s been Tons of technological advancements in my lifetime. We are similar in age. This statement about technology has been vast in a lot of product segments over the years. Flashers, side and down imaging, GPS and mapping. Now forward facing sonar. These technological advancements are not the issue. They will not make the fish bite. You eluded to that about leaving in active fish using forward facing sonar. Like you said, this is just a tool. Putting regulations on technology is a very slippery slope. Look at gun control measures….. nothing good comes from over regulating tools in any industry.
