Since the vast majority of game sales are now digital it seems like Sony could have a fairly significant profit by investing in some kind of OS level FPS boost to lure people into the Playstation Store to pick up older highly rated titles running at 60fps. They could create an entirely new category in the store for fps boosted older titles, the library could be made extensive even without game studio support if they added a dedicated team to do the development work similar to how Illusion does the work. Heck just hire Illusion to DO THE WORK... as long as the original developer is willing to sign some kind of agreement for the work it could definitely turn out great and Sony can ABSOLUTELY apply the pressure to get this done if they wanted to.

Devs should just bake in an uncapped framerate option into all new games. They know that eventually their games will be played on a more powerful console down the road, and I don't see any downside to letting players enable it, especially if it came with a warning that the feature is experimental. I absolutely loathe when performance goes unutilized
Illusion, the developer of these patches, is also working on a real-time framerate analyzer plugin for OBS, that will probably lead the DF VirtualDub method to be outdated.
This person has been amazing for us fans in these videos. Maybe not so much for Sony, but I’d love if people made more noise to work these into reality.
This is why I like PC gaming you don’t have to worry about if Sony or Microsoft or the devs “feel” like updating older games for new hardware. With a PC every game is backwards compatible and not only that most have graphics mods that can make the games look even better.
couldnt agree more, an Open platform will always be better than anything thats locked down by a big corporation. Money is the motivator in console games, if they cant pass it off as a "remaster" then nothing gets done about it, and all these wonderful games at 30fps are stuck there forever. Its pretty sad.

Gravity Rush with its high graphic fidelity, amazing particle effects and physics running as good as it does on the Pro is a technical masterpiece and shows what is potential for the PS5 and Series S/X.
One thing I remember about Driveclub is, that is has a photo mode which increases graphic fidelity if the camera stays still. That decreased performance quite a lot on PS4, a little less on PS4 Pro. You could feel, it dropped sub 30 FPS. Could be a good benchmark to test the PS5 performance.
Was hoping to see Gravity Rush 2 in there 17:35 saw GR2 in there - one of the BEST PS Games ever! Truly a Gem - it's need an official 4K 60fps or even 4K 120 FPS Mode ASAP!

Anything regarding Gravity Rush and all the other innovative and smaller games like it that Sony has in their backlog will probably be stuck without a patch or re-release. And if I were you I wouldn't go out of your way to look up screenshots of the Gravity Rush movie, it's truly horrible what Sony is planning to do with this IP...
I love the visual style of Gravity Rush but never understood why people like it so much. I played the original Vita version and found it incredibly clunky. It wasn't fun to play. Is GR2 on PS4 much different?
Sony really needs to be something about these. They could just release a small diff patch to the game executable to force it to 60 after asking for permission to devs. Why isn't this being done?

@@ItsHatlolOfficial DRIVECLUB still has the best windshield rain physics of any racing game. It's engine sounds and how they were implemented is still the best in any racing game. They were recorded positionally, not digitally mixed to emulate position. Sound also reacts physically to all surfaces up to a certain culling point. All Forza, Assetto Corza, and Need For Speed games still use an archaic sound model. Even it's cars have a higher polycount than some of the cars in Forza Motorsport 2023. As a matter of fact the way in which the game is rendered, known as Deferred Rendering/Physically-based Shading, is still being used to this day. It was also one of the first ever racing games to implement TAA into it's rendering pipeline. I dare you to fire up Project cars 3 which released in in 2020 then DRIVECLUB (2014) and tell me it's "retro". DC mops the floor with PC3 both in visuals and Audio. Due to Moore's Law stagnation the whole "it's ten years old therefore it's obsolete" point is pretty moot. I'd love to see DF do a video on what the emulation scene is doing for remastering PS2 games. They're making wide-screen patches, texture packs, bug fixes, reshaders, and more. They're really doing the Lords work
They'll only do that if it runs on overpriced FPGA hardware because John seems to think software emulation is beneath him and only for poor people, something DF doesn't want to cater for.
Thank you for this video! Keep doing this series because I think little by little. This helps developers realize that the majority of the market wants 60 frame games on console!
I'm convinced Vsync toggles should be mandatory on console games. As a PC gamer it's frankly embarrassing that players need to beg developers/publishers to play at 60fps.
I, too, think every game should have an unlocked fps option when they launch. It makes it so much easier for future hardware and emulators to take advantage and run the games better.
I remember Digital Foundry criticizing games with unlocked frame rate back in the day, even when it was only a option. Now it's all we wanted every game had, right?!

At this point, the closest we’re going to get to Driveclub remaster is through PS4 emulation on PC. Can’t wait to run that game with an unlocked frame rate in 4K with auto HDR enabled
This is why every single game should have unlocked frame rate option even if the current console can't reach 60fps or 120fps. But it seems that greediness and ignorance have consumed the developers.

@@jairesemccoy9779yeah I wouldn't call my PS5 or Xbox SX portable, but I agree that they're more streamlined and plug-and-play. They're almost as big as a compact PC case. But they are cheaper than gaming PC'S, don't need all the research that goes into a custom build or the premium that comes with pre-built gaming rigs. Big big reasons why people choose consoles over PC's. Plus, I work on my computer all damned day for work (started work yesterday at 9am, finished at 2:30am next day), no way in hell I'll sit at this desk for fun. Living room / console setup it is! Plus it's hard to find room for a PC or laptop on your average tv stand, so it's not really a living room solution either.

Seeing Driveclub running at 60 fps is really awesome. But I feel so bad that we won't have a Driveclub 2 game. Driveclub was one of the best games I played on my Ps4. Still have my physical copy, and still playing it!
This is what I love about the PC, you're not at the mercy of Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo to get these things done or the developers to patch the game up to run better on newer hardware, games being designed to scale automatically do that, and if there are things games don't do, there's a modding community for that, consoles could benefit from that, but most won't because you need an unlocked console which very few consoles gamers will have. It's also what I love about the Steam Deck, it blurs the line from PC openness and console ease of use, all Valve needs to do is the same thing for the home PC/hybrid console market and I probably would never buy another traditional console again, or better yet, with the Steam Deck 2 when that's released, make sure it's got external dgpu support on a dock, that would allow a lot of the same benefits of higher end PC gaming whiles not having to buy a PC and portable device, being that's it's already shown that external gpu's perform really well on these portable devices and for a lot of us, that would mean we could just buy a Deck 2 without even bothering with a PC gaming rig on the big screen. There is one way Microsoft and Sony could solve much of this issue, make it mandatory that games have an upscaling option, which most games already do and an unlocked frame rate option to 60 and even 120fps. Doing that, it would mean Sony, Microsoft or the developers wouldn't need to do any work, it would scale to the highest resolution of the upscale and frame rate just by throwing more hardware power at it, and honestly, I'm surprised more of this wasn't done when the PS4 Pro and the mid-gen Xbox was released, without that, you're at the mercy of the publishers, which most don't care about their games once it's gone past its shelf life.

I would love if Sony could do something about this. I'd love to play Driveclub and RDR2 again on my PS5 at 60fps. Maybe everybody could start a petition to Sony to do this? I doubt it, but here's hoping they watch and hear about this.
Sony have definitely been resting on their laurels when it comes to updating more last-gen games on the PS5 - I get it involves work on either their end or a publisher/developer's part, but it's a true crime frankly that the likes of RDRII, Bloodborne or Shadow of the Colossus Remastered remain stuck in 30FPS. Maybe more videos like this, and the modders that make it a reality, could encourage them to take action, however unlikely.
Arkham knight being stuck as a ps4 game in 1080p with high use of film grain, chromatic aberration and terrible anti aliasing are all signs that we desperately need a remaster to be able to play it on ps5 in 4k 60fps, and to be able to toggle off all those mentioned terrible graphic settings.

Interestingly enough, RDR2 is at a solid, rock steady 60fps without any stuttering (at least for what's shown) and this is from an unofficial patch/hack. This is even better than the PC version which still has terrible stuttering even with the async set to "true" and all other settings changed in-game while playing on a mid-high end PC.

I remembered playing JC3 on PS4 with frame rates lower than 30 fps & it crashed a few times yet I finished it. I would love to see all (not just selected ones) PS4 games have framerate boosts officially on PS5 but seems like not all game developers are dedicated enough to give those an update. Thank goodness with the modded PS5. Let's hope that if they successfully hack the soon-to-be released PS5 Pro, then we should have a smooth sailing experience playing PS4 games (including the Last Guardian with 4K, stable 60 fps at 99.9% of the time) on PS5 Pro.
Damn... If Drive Club was 60 on PS5, I'd pick it up. Looks unbelievably good for when it came out. Hell, I'd buy almost every game on the list again if they got a res and fps bump. Great video, though it makes me a bit sad that we can't have what's on display.
Great work Rich! We all knew this was the case, that PS5 would power through PS4 games if the frange rate limiters are removed, but it’s good to see it proven to be the case.
Good thing is this will likely be a lesser issue for the future since most games now have a different modes on PS5 built in as well as dynamic resolution scaling Take Avatar a current gen title that uses the hardware "ps6" would very likely be able to pushe the dynamic resolutions far higher to max no patch needed then there's the 120 fps modes which would also be cleaned up without much issue getting closer to locked
It’s probably for respect for the developers and they would need some polishing. People who didn’t make their game shouldn’t be able change things cause we feel it’s better, the developer should have control over these things at the end of the day.
@jgooner8948 improving the framerate is in no way changing artistic quality, since most of them were already unlocked on Pc and the limit on pc was just for stability on weaker hardware.

Since discs are just glorified installers now, and are just used to check license when launching a game, this "OS level fps boost" would work also for physical copies

He also did a bloodborne fps patch for PS4 Pro, and done a TON of fps patches for RPCS3 (PS3 Emulator) and more.
One thing I remember about Driveclub is, that is has a photo mode which increases graphic fidelity if the camera stays still.

I feel like it comes a point where the actual art is degraded because of the 30FPS frame limit, a lot more things are visually more noticeable at 60FPS

Great work Rich! We all knew this was the case, that PS5 would power through PS4 games if the frange rate limiters are removed, but it’s good to see it proven to be the case.
I always wanted a Spyro reignited 60 fps patch
Good thing is this will likely be a lesser issue for the future since most games now have a different modes on PS5 built in as well as dynamic resolution scaling
Take Avatar a current gen title that uses the hardware "ps6" would very likely be able to pushe the dynamic resolutions far higher to max no patch needed then there's the 120 fps modes which would also be cleaned up without much issue getting closer to locked
If a hacker can do it, there is no justification why Sony can't offer this.
