So happy I found this video. Lately I feel overstimulated by the planner/journal community, and it's exhausting to see most videos out there just.. encouraging overconsumption and planner hopping, one way or another. I'm tired of hearing "it didn't work for me anymore so I changed to a new book!". I mean, it is their money so use it however they want I guess.., but it's exhausting to watch. This video is so inspiring, and I love how consistent you are in your books. I agree, blank pages are okay. Not filling in the pages are okay. I think it's only wasteful when you buy 5 dated books in a year and you barely use any of them. Even just a pen and paper is enough, in whatever form that is. You don't need all the accessories, and though I admit those are nice, at the end of the day, those are extras. Your memories is not any less precious without it.
I'm glad to offer some calm! I so feel you on the overstimulation. I unfollowed a few very popular accounts because I was like, "I'm getting stressed out by your planner hopping!" And they're not even my planners haha. It's such a hard line to walk because seeing inspiration can be helpful, but it's also possible to just get frozen looking at other people's notebooks and completely neglect filling in your own.
I think it’s called a hobby. Nobody needs most things that are part of a hobby. They want them. It’s fun. When you love journaling and stationery hopping is part of the fun. It’s not about what everyone else doing, you do you.
@@tinygardenbigharvest1997 Oh totally! It's just frustrating when they put themselves in that situation of over purchasing, and then get frustrated that they couldn't keep up with it, and keep switching, wondering why nothing works or nothing clicks. It's not the type of content I'd like to consume, but sadly I see it everywhere.
100% Also, it may be their money and they can use it however they want, but the overconsumption is effecting the planet we ALL live on. (And I've seen the idea tossed around the 2025 quality issues are linked to resource depletion of the trees used to make trp...) I will never personally understand planner hopping. My goal is one book with everything in it. It just goes over my head.
That’s exactly why I have to avoid a certain channel with CW in the title. She makes me feel inferior if I can’t “afford” the products she uses. Actually found a book page holder like hers for around $10 on Amazon and hers was over $50. I have them both and can’t tell the difference until I look at the back. Her response was that I get what I pay for. 😕😔 It helps people feel better about their planner journeys if you can be supportive and not condescending.
Your spread is the most realistic one for a neurodivergent like me. I love it so much! No over-the-top washi tapes and immaculate handwriting. We even have similar handwriting! I just started doing this planner hobby this 2024(using kinbor weekly undated planner) and am now checking out how other planner peeps are doing. I was almost immediately overstimulated seeing their planner spread. I just can't subscribe to their level of commitment honestly. The blank pages are so true! My whole March page was skipped because I was so busy and it was even the highlight of my year! Had my wedding and traveled to two countries to watch The Eras and have our honeymoon. I just had no mental energy to open my journal at all. Seeing your contents soothed my anxiety and now I'm kinda looking forward to my next year's life book!
I'm so glad the algorithm brought your video my way. I was cheering everything you were saying: don't get daunted by the pretty pages, just appreciate your journaling for what it is, blank pages also say something, TRP isn't bulletproof and it's not that big of a deal. You've said everything I've been thinking lately about the planner community.
Here’s how I approach blank pages in my journal: Awesome, now I have an extra page for any notes or journaling that I don’t have enough space for. It’s got to a point where sometimes I purposely leave some pages blank so I have spare pages just in case I need them 😂 Thanks for addressing that, I think that’s very important. The community can really be overwhelming with all the ‘perfect’ spreads and layout, so I have long decided to just take everything as reference and just work the way I want/am comfortable with on a (quasi) daily basis. Thanks for your very honest sharing, it gave me new ideas and prompts for journaling too
Really loved this video! Thank you😊. Because I'm a reader, blank pages are often used for quotes or ideas that I want to remember. I also do the trick of decorating the week after I've completed it. I think the grid layout allows you to leave spaces that work well for going in afterwards to add graphics. The longer you do it, the more you get used to what kinds of graphics you like to add and can leave a little space.
In my weeks I put a photo of my meds and amounts prescribed. Basically for my husband or for emergency situations. At 73 it’s a good idea to have that kind of stuff available
Great video. I always like the idea of drawing in journals but I’m not a very good artist so I only did so minimally. The silly looking drawing or sketches are my favorite part of looking back at old journals so now I do it a lot more and my kids love looking back with me too because of it. It may not be the work of an artist, but I’m not an artist and it’s my book.
Treating the pencil board as a "dashboard" is genius. I hadn't seen anyone use it that way, but it makes perfect sense and solves several issues I've been trying to find a solution for. 😊
Thank you SO MUCH for this video. This is one of the best planner videos I have ever seen because it's so realistic and relatable but still inspiring and encouraging. I have felt like a failure every time I skipped a page or scribbled something out or stopped using a planner - but your approach has totally changed my perspective. I can't wait to use my Hobonichi books now - even if I make a mess. ❤
This video is a breath of fresh air, everyone in the planner community should watch it. People (myself included…) sometimes make such a big deal out of really simple things that are not that important in the bigger picture. And thank you for sharing your thoughts. I just love when I learn or realize something while watching youtube videos, which honestly doesn’t happen that often, so I’m pleasantly surprised watching this.
Seriously, this has been the most helpful video I've seen this entire month. Normally I wouldn't start thinking about next year's lineup until November, when I'd usually draw up and test out a bunch of layouts to figure out what my system would look like for the coming year. But now it seems we need to pick our planner(s) for the next year in July, because otherwise it's all sold out and we'll die a slow death by FOMO and be buried under the hype. 🙈 So I'm all confused, I haven't had time to really give this year's system the testing it needs and I have some ideas if what I want for 2025 but not enough to make a purchase. Which, apparently, I need to do asap if I value my life. 😆 I've never planner hopped during the year but I had a lot of life changes in 2023-2024 and had to change my work planner and my journal mid-2024. I ended up journaling in a Hobonichi A6 and have been itching to be able to carry around just one A6 book. Actually, I've pasting in weeklies in my A6 so I can do just that. I've been thinking the Papertess A6 would be perfect for next year (I sincerely wasn't ready when Aura Estelle's A6 catch-all pre-ordered so I skipped on that one) but I was so full of doubt as to my ability to keep it all aesthetic, which is what I need my personal task-planner to be but what my journal definitely isn't. You've put my mind at ease and my doubts to rest. It doesn't matter. It will be my happy place, sometimes tidy, sometimes messy, always beautiful. 🥰
I think my sentiment is similar with most people here, thank you so much for making this video and showing your old journals. I often stay back from using pre-formatted planners because I'm so afraid of not using it "properly", as in write it full (in "aesthetic" journal way) and filled everyday. But seeing how you often just scribbled some lines in them and left some blanks while talking about how you still find it useful really motivates me to try to get back to pre-formatted planners. I used simple bullet journal for planning for years but I feel like I want to try hobonichi techo next year. Your video give me encouragement.
I’m so glad! I still use a lot of concepts from bullet journaling too and I think it’s another great tool. But there’s something lovely about Hobonichi ☺️
I loved your video❤ I agree with everything you said people are too precious with their planners that they’re afraid to use them I love “messy” spreads it makes the planner lived in and loved and I think that’s the whole point
I love dollar store planners...the saved my pocket book. I use fine and extra fine so there is no ghosting....I still use a week because I am addicted to JP stationary and cars and pens and music equipment etc.
Thank you! This feels motivational as a newbie to the planning community and a long time wannabe daily journal keeper. I think my favorite size is A6 too.
Love your video. I write a lot, but I use a notebook beside my cousin. So if I feel like writing more, I use my notebook. Next year it will be my 7th year with hobonichi. I tried all sizes, but cousin is the one I use the most. So I only bought cousin for next year. I use my cousin for both journaling and planning ( in the weekly pages).
Yes I agree. I do not want to spend all the time on decorating. I use my time knitting and reading and Bible study. Those are more important things to me. I do place colorful stickers etc but I don’t spend lots of time and hours
That is such a great idea for your daughter. When I was born baby books were common. Milestones and things that were happening in my life as a baby were such fun to read for me.
Thanks for the great video! Yes, Shigesato Itoi definitely said that blank pages also tell a story about your life and are perfectly fine and say just as much as a full page. All Hobo pages are welcome and beloved! 😅 ❤ PS thanks for your comments about the paper. I remember I had an A6 techo in 2019 that BLED terribly just from writing with fountain pen. I was really surprised at the time but assumed it was just a weird reaction between that particular ink and the paper or something. Like you, I feel that the disappointment with the new paper has generally been over the top.
What I've seen of quality concerns this year is mostly from fountain pen users seeing random spots of feathering and pens they've always used without bleedthrough suddenly having it. But it's also not every page. Not heard anything solid as far as reasons for it, just a lot of speculation. But yes, I agree, the paper is so thin it has always ghosted. In fact, one fountain pen channel I follow found that the 2024 sanzen batch handled ink swatching better than the old paper. The go around about it has been very interesting to me.
Thank you for pointing out blanks are ok. As someone trying to rediscover daily journaling while dealing with executive dysfunction, I honestly wonder how certain creators find time and energy to fill every single page. My personal donation to it bother me if that next year I'm going to be trying a super simple, trad bujo in a lined notebook, with rolling dailies. So if a day is just my basic time tracking and to-do,cool. But if I need more than the one page for journaling that day I also have that cause each daily is put in right after the prev day the next morning.
My first Hobonichi was the A6 and I fell in love. At some point I ordered a weeks and it is my right hand tool. I really want to go back into the A6, but I love my weeks so so much!! Its hard to make that decision.
I appreciate this video very much. I feel like I watched a lot of intermediate to advanced planning and joirnaling videos lately and while the books I saw were works of art it was daunting 😅
I’m actually working on another video along the themes of this one but not specific to Hobonichi! Creating journals is a beautiful artifact of living, however they wind up looking.
Loved the video! i have a question, I want to buy a traveler's notebook, but I do not know how does it fares with fountain pen ( Kaweco Twsbi user here )
I use many different fountain pens (cheap through to expensive) and I don't have any issues with any of the inserts with them. I use extra fine through to broad nibs in the notebooks happily.
@@blackhellebore89 thank you, this really helps. I have heard that sometimes with fountain pens, they bleed on TN paper.. but your feedback surely helps a lot.
It really just depends on what inserts you get for Travelers Notebook because Travelers makes many different ones with different kinds of paper. So far the only Travelers official insert I've tried that didn't work well with fountain pens is the grid insert. That being said there are other companies that make inserts as well and I mostly use tome river paper inserts from GoodInkpressions.
